I picked up 10 reduced to £1.50 a plant at a local garden centre as they were all dying off, but because of watching your video I could see they at least had a couple of pups on each plant, now I’m running out of pots 😂
I’m the Garden Granny at Home Depot & we just received a Large shipment of Bromeliads & other gorgeous exotics. I bought one & it has a flame flower instead of the cup shapes. Cheers for the information.
I did exactly the same experiment last year:) and my conclusion is: if you want bushier and bigger plant leave the pops on the mother plant. The babies grow bigger and faster on their mum and she may even produce more babies later on - like mine did. I don't know about flowering yet, but my guess is that the mother plant will flower quicker as the kids grow faster on her :)
My daughter gave me a Bromeliad with pinkish brachts which have now turned light grey/brown, obviously dead. Not knowing what to do next I luckily found your video which has been a great help, especially about the pups which I now know I can pot on, and look forward in time to seeing them grow and produce their brachts. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I literally noticed the pups on my way out to throw my "dead" plant away! I'll definitely propagate the new one as I really love this plant
I'm pleased you noticed it before it got thrown away! I think most people throw them away without knowing that they can get several more plants from the mama!
Thanks very much my brother. I love your program and you. Thanks for the tips on the Bromeliads. Just rescued one from a friend with no thumbs. Lol 😂. Never had one before so thanks for the tips.
Me too, which is y I came to TH-cam. I'm very new at ds and my bromeliad is my first plant. The beautiful flaming red swords are changing color and kinda drying out... so sad, I'm heartbroken.😢😢😢. But I'll follow what u advised and see how dt goes. Thanks
At last someone who i can actually listen to (a non annoying english voice). Found this video so helpful for my new purchase and I will be be back and looking at your others.
My flower eventually turned green and kept thriving, i also got 3 offsets that I'm going to propagate. I should note that i also use UV lights with several of my houseplants, guzmania included.
Thank you!! I got one as a gift today, even though I have a lot of plants I never had one of the Bromelids before. She is beautifully orange red, but her pot is super tightly packed in wet coconut and it did seem a bit suffocating in there. So I am glad my intuition was right. She already shoots out pups on all sides. I put her next to my orchids that also love bright light but nothing direct. I hope she and her babies will do well.
I got one breath taking for the first time a real present gifted well I live in Tx and I thought welcome beauty and it turned black marked before you could blink I luv it it is fun anyways and accepts itself well I see why it is a Bromeliad, unforgettable very unique watching cause I should have realized how it is a true beauty, playfully.
I've always been afraid to buy one of these beauties at the garden center for fear of not being able to care for it correctly, but after watching your video I feel a lot more confident. I live in San Diego, CA., and I think they might actually like the temp., usually very fair. Yes, I think I'm going to give it a go:) Thanks for your great video, your style of presenting is easy to watch and really informative. I'll look forward to your future videos and watching your old ones too!:)
Thank you for your kind comments! I'm so glad you found it helpful. By the way, don't be afraid to give a plant a home, even if it doesn't work out you will have learned and enjoyed it for some time. I think they will last longer with you than most homes they might go to and if they don't sell at the store within a few weeks they often go in the skip! So if you think of it that way you are rescuing them! :-) Good luck with your Bromeliad and keep us posted on how you're doing, if you have any questions just let me know. Andy
I also liked your video, thanks for all the information which seemed very helpful. As of today I'll start looking for the babies to start growing new ones, thanks for showing us the right way of doing.
Thank you for the thorough video and also for actually showing the repotting of the pups. As a novice owner of a bromeliad guzmania whose mother plant is spent I was searching for more information on these beautiful plants. Your video is just the information I needed!
Hi from Bristol. No pups on my bromeliad with stripy leaves. The flower died about a month and a half ago and I have only just removed it after watching this video. Hope the pups grow.
Thanks so much for this. I was so dissaponted when I saw the colour on my Guzmania fade, but then I saw the pups I was about to just snip them off at the base. I'll now wait for them to grow a bit more and seperate them at the roots.
This was very helpful! I noticed you didn’t water the pups after transplanting them. Is that normal? Also, until the pups grow a bract, it’s not easy to water in the center of the bract so how do you water pups?
Good information. I was about to dedicate a spot to a bromeliad but decided against it due to the once in a life time flower. But I guess repotting the new ones is a solution?
Yes, you can repot the pups but they wont grow up quick enough to always keep flowering for your spot, it could take a few seasons for the pups to mature enough to flower.
I really benefited from this wonderful video And I have had this plant for one-year-old, but I did not know how to deal with it, but after this video, I will take care of it It is now banishing the one with you... the flower has dried up and small buds have appeared Should I cut the dry flower? Can I leave the buds with their mother?
I'm from central Virginia. Very few greenhouses around anymore. I'm not sure, but I think to replant one of these, you use half & half citrus and orchid potting mix. Everyone agrees the soil has to drain very well and not to over water. You can get crown rot.
My bromeliad gave three pups but one pup is growing faster than the other two. Do I only remove the bigger pup to a different pot ?? And my other issue is, the center of my bromeliad seems to be drying out and the leaves easily rip off what should I do ??
I doesn't really matter if you keep them on or take them off so its your own choice really. The mother may die at this stage as her job is done and its her natural time, she wont flower again.
Hi Mary, You can't really damage them from spraying water onto the leaves too much, as long as your water is not too hard, if you use rainwater or deionised water its even better. you can spray them multiple times per day and it will benefit the plant as you are adding humidity around the plant which will help it stay happy and healthy.
Plz you can tell me in what you plant your bromeliad on soil or anything's else coz I have no any idea I'm a biginner plz help me I lived in a tropical Island.
Very relaxing to hear you talking about plants! Do you give classes? On zoom maybe 🤔 very interesting, thanks! Oh and btw: how is the bigger plant going? I want to leave the « babies » on my bromeliad and repot in a bigger pot, hope it will grow nicely :)
Thank you! I have not thought about classes before, but if enough people would like to do one then I am happy to put something together. The bigger plant is still alive, it has not produced any more flowers or pups but if you wanted to keep them all together I think that would be fine.
I bought my plant with the orange flower in the middle. Well it has really dried out and I do not know what to do with it. I never knew how to water either. Is it correct to water in the very centre of the plant where the main stem comes out? Also, I want to cut the dried flower out on the spiny stem. How do I do that? Thanks a lot
Fab video!! I need a bit of advice. I’ve just purchased one of these beauties from the shop, however it’s in regular potting soil. I know you shouldn’t repot things quickly after you rehome them but I know they shouldn’t be in this mixture... What should I do?
They are an epiphyte which means they don't take up nutrients from the soil but from the air and moisture in the centre of the plant, the roots are just to anchor the plant in the pot so it;'s not too essential to worry about the soil really. I wouldn't worry too much.
Thank you for the information. I received one from a friend. It had a very light red flower. That was about 2 months ago. The color is turning to a tarnish color. Is the flower dying off?
If I cut the scorched part from a plant which has become burnt, will that leaf continue to grow? Would I be better to just tear off and throw away the burnt leaf?
It's up to your really, if it's just the tip of the leaf then cutting it off would be fine, it will still be a useful leaf, if you have a large part of it that is burnt then you might be better off just cutting the whole leaf off, it will push out a new one to replace it in time.
If it doesn't have any root at all it might be tough for it, but they are epiphytic so there is still a chance, I would wait and see how it does, time will tell I think. Good luck. Andy
It's only been four months and so not a whole lot to update yet but I can do a quick update for those interested as I've been asked quite a few times for one.
Dependent upon the bromeliad species, consider slowly overtime remove external leaves from the mother plant. It is also possible to cut-off the mother entirely at its base. However, when they are in a garden bed ... just watch them enjoying a sunshade.
Hi April, they are still available via the eBay link in the description, if you select the dropdown where it says "Tool:" it's the one called "harvest knife dp951" towards the bottom of the list. Hope that helps. Andy
Misting with water is a tricky subject, the water will evaporate quite quickly depending on where you live and how warm/humid it is. Misting is only benefitial while it keeps the plant slightly wet, once it dries out there are no additional benefits so to keep the benefits of misting constantly you would need to mist several times per day, which isn't really practical, a humidifer will create a better environment but at a cost.
All you can do is give it some water, if you can put it in the sink and let the water run in the pot gently so all the soil is nice and wet, let it all drain out and put it in the shade somewhere and give it some time. Hopefully it will come back. Good luck. Andy
I am a little confused on watering. my tag that came with mine said to keep the cup filled at all times. so how often should I fill it? I have been only filling the cup. soil is bone dry. I just moved it closer to the window afraid it was dieing due to not enough light. and there it just happens to be next to my humidifier. and ive been using filtered reverse osmosis water. its snowing here now. would melted room twmp snow water be the same as rain?
also should I remove the dead leaves I have? if I do I will have 6 leaves remaining. I think I am overwatering a little. its not happy about it but after watching your video I thing its ok as long as I correct the watering now. it has a single pup. how long will it grow new pups? should I get more?
Hi, I have s bromeliad an it’s been near radiator over winter an the top centre of plant where flower should grow has dried out even though I’d kept misting it an no new growth has grown, is there anything I can do ? Thanks.
Good video thanks. I was given a Guzmania as a house warming gift and the main flower has died now, so I have cut it out. I can see I have one pup, but on the other leaves it looks a bit dry and crusty, so doesn't look very healthy. I have been watering the plant weekly, but just wondering if there's anything I can do to make the leaves healthier?
what about a diffuser i have a 6" round diffuser that sits next to my bromeliad. should i move it or the vapor that comes out is actually good for it. I live in Henderson, NV, USA. should i add a humity plate underneath?
Hello Dear, the soil mix you are using is basically washed construction sand, Am I right, or it's some thing else... 2ndly we need to keep the soil moist or let it dry out a little to water again... Last but not the least, one grower conveyed me that we can easily grow this in pure cow dung compost...! Need your valuable suggestions on this plz...
Hi, yes the horticultural grit is basically building grit sand which has been graded for the smallest sizes, washed and is lime free. I would let it dry out a little in between waterings. Pure cow dung without rotting down might be too strong to grow in, here in the UK we would normally let it rot down for 6 months to a year before we use dung on our gardens so it still has benefitial nutriants but is not too strong that it can burn the plants. Good luck.
So I bought mine about 2-3 weeks ago (it was a gift otherwise I would just go back to the same nursery myself) and complain they sold on after it flowered and in its dying cycle as I never got to see any flower) and the colored leaves are Already turning brown. But no pups have grown. Will the pups shoot out after the mother plant flowers and starts to go brown or do you think the nurse took those pups away from me for themselves? 😮 Is this plant useless now?
I noticed you put very little dirt on the bottom when transplanting is there a reason for that? I just purchased one of these plants but didn 't realize it only bloomed once however since all of my plants were on the discount table due to lack of water I am not dissapointed especfially now that I know I can remove the babies from the mother plant. thanks for the vidio.
Hi Linda, Bromeliads are Epiphytes so technically they don't need soil at all, in the rainforrest they will cling on to trees and find little crevices to grow in, they don't take their water and feed in via the roots the way other plants do, they have a reservoir in the centre of the leaves where rainwater and other nutriants will go in. Hope that helps, Andy
Thanks for this! Mine has had a slight bit of a flower but isn't blooming and I've had mine for several months, it was given to me like that and it now has 2 little pups but the flower just isn't changing to full bloom. Is there a way I can help it bloom?
i have some bromeliads. guzmania and imperial silver plum. they all got sunburned recently. if they are on their way to death, will they produce pups even if their death is premature?
it's a possibility but if they are on their way out quickly its unlikley that they will have time to produce pups. All you can do is keep them out of the sun, give them a little water and hope for the best.
Yes I will, I've just recorded one for you, not too much has changed but I will show you what they look like, it will be the video after the next one. :-)
I seem to have some different leaves coming out of the plant that doesn’t look like they belong. My plant is in a pot so not sure if they belongs or not
My pups are kind of inside first layer of leaf of mother plant {2 are big, 2 are very small babies}...do i wait for other smaller one to grow before cutting ... they are not outside like yours so am a bit worried..please guide

Only a little in the winter, a little more in the summer but they don't need much.

Thanks.
I'm afraid that if the flower part has dried out there is little chance it will grown another, they are a one shot deal I'm afraid.
If you put the mother plant back in her pot will she grow more pups? Great video.... thank-you
So do we add some fertilizer to the water which we then spray on the leaves?
You can add a very dilute amount but they don't require much fertilizer at all.
So how much is too much water? What's small amount?
Can you put cold tea on these plants as a food
Yes, I believe that black tea is a good source of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.
Not really Sandeep, it might be geting burned in the sun if it's in direct sunlight?
@@HouseplantHacks thanks. it’s not in direct sunlight.
What kind of things that needed to mix the media?
Small bark mulch is good, most houseplant mixes will be ok too, they aren't especially fussy with growing media.
That mother plant will make a lot more pups save mother plant
Thank you, yes I believe so.
what about a diffuser i have a 6" round diffuser that sits next to my bromeliad. should i move it or the vapor that comes out is actually good for it. I live in Henderson, NV, USA. should i add a humity plate underneath?
If it makes mist then it will be good for it as its creates humidity.
Good luck.
@@HouseplantHacks thanks a lot dear 👍💐
My pups barely came away with any routes will it die?
So I bought mine about 2-3 weeks ago (it was a gift otherwise I would just go back to the same nursery myself) and complain they sold on after it flowered and in its dying cycle as I never got to see any flower) and the colored leaves are Already turning brown. But no pups have grown. Will the pups shoot out after the mother plant flowers and starts to go brown or do you think the nurse took those pups away from me for themselves? 😮 Is this plant useless now?
Can you replant a very small plant 4 in. Diameter and when
I noticed you put very little dirt on the bottom when transplanting is there a reason for that?
Hi, It might have already flowered, they only flower once so if it was at the end of its flowering when you were given it then it wont flower again.
@@HouseplantHacks oh I haven't thought of that, thank you!! Should I cut it?
@@mariaklassen2775 I wouldn’t cut it out, I don’t think there is any benefit and if I’m wrong you might miss out on the bloom! :-)
@@RatedReviews25 thanks I'll leave it be 🙂
Thank you for the video! How long does it generally take for the pups to flower?
It depends on several factors, from my experiments they seem to flower quicker staying with the original mother plant, within 6 months sometimes.
How do you water the new pups?
Water the soil and in the summer a little into the centre.
Did you ever do a follow up video om these guys?
Thanks in advance :D
i have some bromeliads. guzmania and imperial silver plum. they all got sunburned recently. if they are on their way to death, will they produce pups even if their death is premature?
it's a possibility but if they are on their way out quickly its unlikley that they will have time to produce pups. All you can do is keep them out of the sun, give them a little water and hope for the best.
Hi thanks for the great video! Could you do some update on your pups?🌱 How are they doing these days?
Yes I will, I've just recorded one for you, not too much has changed but I will show you what they look like, it will be the video after the next one. :-)
@@HouseplantHacks Awesome, thank you Andy 😇❤
I seem to have some different leaves coming out of the plant that doesn’t look like they belong. My plant is in a pot so not sure if they belongs or not
My pups are kind of inside first layer of leaf of mother plant {2 are big, 2 are very small babies}...do i wait for other smaller one to grow before cutting ... they are not outside like yours so am a bit worried..please guide
There is no rush, you can keep them together permanently or separeate them once they grow bigger.
Hi I received my billbergia dry. I bought it online. Will pruning of the leaves help to revive the plant?
What can I do if the flower falls off
