Norm had the rare ability of doing both 😂
It's a bad joke told by a brilliant comedian.
I always imagined the driver being like "a moth walks into a pediatrist office and the Pediatrist ask 'why did you come to see me?' and the moth says 'the light was on'."
He took a joke from the 1930's expanded it and pulled the entire thing out of his ass on the fly. People talk about brave comics, well to do something like that, is really freaking brave.
I mean is it really THAT brave? It's a taped show where they cut 70% of what they film for air.
It's not a live show. Not that brave.
To be brave, you must have fear to overcome. Norm wasn't scared of a joke.
A 20 sec joke turned into a masterpiece
He said they asked him if he had another segment in him, he said he had one joke and asked how long he needed to make it. NORM IS KING

He was totally pulling from Russian literature in this joke. The fact that his driver told him a 20 second joke, and when Connan need to fill eight minutes, and Norm was like I got you watch this…. Is the stuff of legends.

Was a comedian? I feel like there is a different designation for him, and is hybrid with the term genius… not just a comedic genius.. maybe a comedic philosopher?? Hahaha. The great ones always die young don’t they.

Colin Quinn had told him that joke years prior. He also read a lot of Russian literature. Hence, the most fearless and brilliant comedian of all time pulled this absolute gem out of his ass. LEGEND!

This joke brings an image to mind of a turtle - that's human nature (or moth nature in this case) - and a broken clock. The clock keeps yapping on about its troubles while the calm turtle gently pulls it along on the stream.

Just so everyone knows, "the light was on" can be a term for they're open (often times not many businesses are open at night), and moths are attracted to light at night. Kind of the double entendre joke with a drawn out extreme story line.

Yes. He loved russian literature
The joke is that he convinces you to pay attention and spend mental energy following his long rambling set-up, because you think there will be a massive pay-off at the end. Then he provides a lame, kids-joke punchline. You realize you have been tricked, and that triggers you to laugh.
I have read a lot of comments, and different strokes for different folks. If it’s not funny to you then it’s not funny. Yes this is an old joke from the 30’s, and yes the joke is just meh by today’s standards. The genius comes in when Norm takes the set up for an old joke, and turns that into the punch line. On occasion Norm would try and reverse the old set up then punchline standard, and go with the old punchline set up joke. He also occasionally when with the strange the set up and the punch line are the exact same thing shake up.

It's a mediocre joke told really well.
It is brilliant because Norm took the set up of and old joke, and made that the punch line. He was a genius. And he did that with other old 30’s jokes. He was kinda low key an early troller, and I love him for it.
