    Norm's jokes were genius. He tries to come across as not that smart but his jokes had so many layers. Like, this is at least the 20th time I've heard that joke and I just realized that I was left wanting to know more about Janice!😆😆😆😆😆

    He is so correct about the caribou.
    Some wild animal walking through the town or something like that was always how the local news ended when I was a child!

    Norm actually does just ramble in his stand up. I've heard him say in an interview that he goes on stage with only punchlines in his head and he then just meanders around until he gets to the punch line. If you listen to him do the same material at different venues you will notice this is very true. He also does this with his famous "Moth Joke" as a perfect example of the punchline not mattering so much but it's how you get there.

    • @georgesotiriou7051
      @georgesotiriou7051 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I've listened to everything Norm including every bootleg I could find. With every set you can hear the bits develop. He tries out different ways to get to the punchline, changes words, rearranges the bits finding different ways to transition to the next etc. It's a highly calculated process developed over decades. And yes I know that he said during the Stephen Merchant episode that he has the punchline and then he works out different ways to get to it but that's just part of what he does. The 12 minute bit is a great example. He appears to ramble as this is part of the persona but by this point (shooting a special) everything has been worked out. Every pause, almost all word choices, every inflection. Do you think that he came up on the spot with ''sheer tyranny of will?" Norm was a master and his stand up is pure gold. I think he may be too sophisticated for most audiences though.

      @@georgesotiriou7051 Exactly! there’s this myth that Norm wings it which is absolutely false and it’s actually an insult to the hard work that he did, even Conan and Letterman fell into that trap because they don’t see him when he’s bombing in little clubs or when no one’s seen him for weeks because he’s just writing. His conversational style is so perfect it gives the impression that he’s not following a script but he’s got most of his path already worked out and certainly when he’s doing a TV special he knows every word he’s going to say. The closest you get to hearing that directly from his mouth is when he was asked about the final letterman appearance and he said yeah he worked really hard on that, he wanted it to be perfect. Which of course it was.

      Nonetheless, it was written to be told in this order, and the entire 12 minutes is necessary to appreciate the depth of the joke (and the joke teller).
