    After an 18 month search for a lifer PRS. I finally found one in a Grissom Standard tobacco burst, 1 day before Covid shut the whole 🌎 down. Never even plugged it in, met the Reverb seller in a parking lot, played a couple chords handed over the cash, and there ya go...

    Ok, story time.
    I have a buncha PRSseses ... don't judge ... I bought my second one in 2006, a Custom 22 stop tail. Definitely opened my eyes to the lure of non-trem guitars. Fast forward to last year, my local shop gets in the beautiful 2007 Custom 22 20th anniversary with a wonderful top in the most amazing orange ever.
    Problem was, I already have a custom 22, basically the same guitar, right? I take it off the wall to play it. Ohh, it's like a kilo lighter than my old one. Interesting. The acoustic sound off it is also surprising. Plugged in, very nice! Something special about this one somehow. I end up taking it home.
    Comparing against my other one, supposedly the exact same guitar, just a year apart, and there's an obvious difference. Thing is, I feel like the pickups are actually holding it back. I have another with a set of PRS 57/08 pickups in it, which, at the time, was my go-to. I take a chance and order up another set for this one.
    Mag-i-cal. It's become my #1.
    So, there are two morals to this story:
    1. Sometimes a guitar is just amazing, and it doesn't have anything to do with which model it is. Don't be surprised if you go try another DGT and it's not doing the same thing as that one.
    2. Don't discount what a great set of pickups can do for you. I highly recommend you consider a set of the PRS 57/08s for your McCarty. They definitely have the sounds you were describing hearing from that DGT. Las Paul Humbucker/Tele pickup in the bridge, and hopped up strat in the neck.
    I rather figure you already know all this, but thought I'd put it out there anyway, perhaps for others.

    Great video as usual Leon! Thanks for all you do. Super helpful and chops to kill! Does your McCarty have the stock pickups? I have a 99 McCarty and the pickups seem a bit anemic for lack of a better term., particularly the bridge. The guitar plays like butter but curious on your take on the pickups as I am considering a swap. Either the pups or selling and getting a Single cut or DGT. Thx!

    Reminds me of my PRS, a CE24 in the same finish with Suhr pickups closer to PAF. The Thorn neck has some of that single coil snap. I found the Thorn bridge a bit tame so the SSV+ has a little more edge. Although I am waiting on a set of Friedman Classic pickups to compare. Anyway the PRS with PAF is an awesome combo!

    Hi Leon, great DGT Demo, it has a great range of sounds. I am looking for a guitar that has a great Les Paul sound, but is easier to play - i.e. easier access to the top end of the neck. Do you think the DGT does this as well as your PRS single cut ?? I don't need strat tones from a DGT as I have a strat... Or would a PRS single cut be a better option for me.... Thanks

  • @electricmeatpuppet
    @electricmeatpuppet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey bro, have you tried the PRS SE 277? And what's your experience/opinion with baritone guitars? I recently purchased one (charcoal burst finish) for playing some stuff down in drop A and B standard and loving it so far. I put some new locking tuners on the other day, next I'm thinking about trying some different pickup options just for fun, maybe a dimarzio titan in the bridge, but still undecided as yet.

  • @peterschmidt9942

    I've bought a couple of guitars just playing them acoustically and not plugging them in beforehand. One was a honey coloured epiphone SG and the other a natural Washburn 335 style. If the guitar has a natural resonance to itself, I think it inspires you to play it more. Not that it actually makes it sound any different when it's plugged in though.

    Yes, probably the best PRS ever. A PRS for people who aren't sure if they like PRS. I finally get my 2016 Charcoal Jadeburst DGT back soon after not seeing it for over a year (moved countries and it had been stuck in a container). It's probably my favourite guitar as it just does everything well. Super comfortable, light, glorious vintage sounding pickups with incredibly usable split tones. A wonderful blend between a Les Paul and a Strat but with its own sound My second PRS after getting a USA Tremonti. Very happy with both.

    I fell in love with PRS after I picked up an SE about 7 years ago. After upgrading to some older CE models, I don’t know if I can go back to the 3 way toggle. The 5 way rotary switch positions are so great and even in the bolt ons the quality is unmatched by other mid range US models

    Oh wow.... Rock Bottom..YES!!! Nicely done.
    Really would welcome a full clip on the comparison of the 3; DGT/SC245/Mcarty. It would be interesting to have your take on it as you’ll be in a good opportunity to have all 3 for that. From your ending short clip, there is an already noticeable tone difference as the SC comes across the darkest while the DGT sounds more like an older LP where there’s a beefed-up Tele-like having some clarity. Haven’t heard enough of the Mcarty to make a proper description.
    A good challenge would be since the DGT has a trem, how does the floating bridge affect the performance when you have drop-D or other tunings.
    Just to add to THIS video,... your playing seemed a bit “inspired”...DGT in your future I guess.

  • @lordgraga
    @lordgraga 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had a DGT once but it was completely dead sounding and muffled. Ending up trading it away. But favourite PRS’es (I’ve owned ~10) are CE models, so that’s also in the very opposite end of the spectrum.

  • @MorGuitarz
    @MorGuitarz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    These are awesome, classic-voiced PRS's... And they never lose their clarity, even though they have the very full/thick bass tone. Also, the 594 was somewhat based on a 59 Les Paul that PRS had in the shop during their design... (which had the 25.594" scale, unlike their current 24.75" scale). The neck on the 594, Pattern Vintage, is to die for... Truly a special guitar also

      Rick Feith The DGT is a wonderful guitar; I have two of them. I’d also recommend the Studio model, which has two Narrowfield pickups and a bridge humbucker, and the 509, which has double single coil pickups at the bridge and the neck and a single coil in the middle, and when they’re split it sounds very Strat-like. I have a SC245, which I like better than any Les Paul I ever owned.

    I also check all guitars playing them acoustically before plugging them in. I have a friend from Ca who has a p.hd in physics who explained to me the important thing in sound on a guitar is the nut, bridge, strings and pickups mostly as well as stiffness of the neck so that vibration from the strings isn't killed. So, I've always liked medium to thick necks because they do seem to sustain better and have better tone. I also saw a vid of a guitar builder who used software to watch the frequencies and eq of a strat, and then did the same to a neck and buckets if sand with the same pickups mounted on the buckets and it was identical. That's why your carbon fiber guitar sounds great. Pickups, a great hard nut, great bridge and such help!
    Great vid sir. Sorry for going off tangent there..
    The PRS trem is outstanding. 2nd only fo the schaller floyd or OFR from Germany jn staying intune that I've tried
    I played a floyd equipped SE. PRS that was absolutely killer.
    I have to get my strat built. Jap body, US made neck with bonenut, 3 single coil EMG SAs, etc,.
    Check out the pic I sent ya of my Ibanez S series and the graphic I did. You'll love it. Very 80s. I sent it to Leon Ragdoll on messenger sir!
    Greatguitar. .

    I’ve played a few, there ok for me. I’ve got a McCarty trem there kind of a hard find. But will worth buying one. It’s basically the same as my hard tail McCarty. I think it would be cool if PRS would do SC245 trem. I’m not a fan of the Tremonti trem model. Hold it side-by-side next to your McCarty and see if it’s the same body thickness.

    I keep talking myself into and out of a DGT. Looks and sounds great, but the $4k price is ludicrous, considering my lack of talent. I was going to build a second Strat, but when you played the split neck pickup, it sounded pretty Stratty, and maybe i should just consider this for the duties i had in mind for a second Strat....

      @@LeonTodd just your standard S-type bridge. With higher end guitars, the blocks under those trems tend to be rock solid. It's funny you mention the Floyd, 'cause ma Scecter Jeff Loomis 7 has a Floyd and is really, really loud acoustically, but that might be because of the extra mass with the bigger neck and 27' scale

    More reviews need to play the guitars unplugged for some amount of time. The acoustic resonance is probably the first thing somebody should be considering when buying a guitar, even an electric.
    This and the connection the player has with the neck are far more important than the specs
