+theheidis If you look closely you can see the edge of the shoreline and the bridge looks to me like it comes down at that point (to the shore).

I've made that passage many times in both directions, and it never gets old. The thrill of the first glimpse of the towers, still miles away, watching them grow bigger, until you cross over the end of one of the cable anchor foundations... then the view from the bridge as you cross it... is that a freighter over there?!?!?
If you don't get even a tingle the first time you cross the bridge..... You have my deepest sympathies.

Very poetic and creative description of the crossing :-) It is also very beautiful at night. We've only been across it once but look forward to the day when we can do it again.

the best advice for driving across the bridge is to concentrate on the road in front of you and not to look over the side to see how high you are

I live in the Northern Mitten, not far from the Bridge. We were north of Ontonagon last year camping and met a man who never left the Yoop except for the time he briefly lived in Missouri. He had never even been over the Bridge let alone that far east!! To me that was crazy to hear because I've lived in Michigan my whole life and absolutely love the Yoop and even more, Lake Superior.

It was the first time I drove on it but after making frequent trips to the UP it's not so bad. If you want to see terrifying, go over the Lake Ponchatrain causeway. It's not terrifying in a height sense but it's the fact that you drive about 2 feet over the water for miles.

First time was as a passenger - great fun! Next time was as the driver, and I was terrified - it was what it was. Everyone's reaction is different, I suppose . . .

We were there camping out of the back of our truck in May that year and it rained so much that we were forced to take cover in hotels more than we were accustomed to. The Holiday Inn in Traverse City was $190 a night and that was back in 2013. Due to costs and weather we had to cut our trip short and head home before seeing much of what we had hoped to see. Maybe someday we'll be back and give it a second try :-)

The one that spooks me the most is the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel Bridge .... you drive along a bridge for miles and then suddenly the road dips down and goes under the water for 2 miles and then comes back up again. That happens twice before you reach the other side. Kinda fun once you get used to it :-)
