I just cant get enough of watching videos of this Bridge,,, I've driven over it atleast 50 times, was close friends with JC Stillwell for over 30 years before he past away, now all my kids enjoy it..
This is really neat. I love historical stuff, and my favorite type of history is the "what was this like in the past", and this video fits nicely. Also, what a great job of restoring the photos by Mr. Zeman's granddaughter.
I as born in 1952. Every year we would go to South Range to visit Grandma in the summer. One year it was snowing at the ferry docks. I remember the towers standing alone orange in the straits. I have crossed countless times and loved it every time!
What a great tribute to the men who built one of the great wonders. Also a fitting tribute to my father, Fuzzy (Darl) Hawley Ironworkers 340, I know he worked stringing the suspension cables for American Bridge. Thank you for sharing with the world.
I was stationed at K.I.Sawyer near Marquette, MI. I got out of the service in 1979. Graduated from NMU 12/83 as a Medical Technologist. I loved the Upper Peninsula. Loved it. Did my internship in Escanaba MI. I now live in Richwood WV. but I’am doing my best to get my grandson up for a road trip next summer when he graduates as a RN with A BSN & minor in Community Health:-)🙏🇺🇸😎
When I was about 6 or 7 I met Jerry Stillwell an Ironworker in the Mackinac Bridge at his restaraunt Mama Mias that also had a museum uostairs. I am 21 now and look back on it fondly.
as a little kid I remember crossing on the ferry that used to run before the bridge was built! I have been across that bridge it is scary when it buckles in high winds.
The piers where driving 295 feet under Lake Michigan and Huron amazing and only 5 people's died it's 😢 construction of the Mackinac Bridge 🌉. Just a beautiful span over these 2 big beautiful lakes.
It's very windy in the straights, this keeps the bridge stable. Do a search here on youtube of Tacoma Narrows Bridge and you can understand why the Mighty Mac was designed this way.
When my sister Bonnie and boyfriend (future husband) Don were dating, Don came up from Deroit area (Romulus) every couple weeks, and had to catch the ferry to cross while the bridge was being built. He shoulda taken pictures, but didnt. DARN!
If you got to the pizzeria on the strip and go up the stairs there’s a museum of the bridge and a theatre showing the bridge being constructed also amazing pizza
David Southwell - That’s incorrect. The Verrazzano Narrows bridge was designed by Othmar Amman. The Mackinac bridge was designd by David Steinman and it is his masterpiece. Steinman also designed the St. Johns bridge in Portland, Oregon.
I met a guy while out servicing communications equipment in Mount Pleasant whos uncle was one that had fallen into the concrete as it was being poured.. I shook his hand.. wish I got his address.
The bridge authority was appointed in June 1950. They had to pick an engineer, make plans and blueprints, and sell bonds to pay for it all. Construction began May 7th 1954. The bridge was open to traffic November 1st 1957. This is from the book I have.
This bridge is the Golden Gate of the Great Lakes. Am I the first one to use this phrase? Sometimes I think I got gypped. The Golden Gate’s main suspension tables are 36 inches wide. The Mighty Mac’s are only 24 inches. Can an engineer out there tell me why this is ? 😊

Well done...
I get to brag to my college roommate being from NYC that the same architect who designed the Verrazano Bridge designed our Mighty Mac
David Southwell - That’s incorrect. The Verrazzano Narrows bridge was designed by Othmar Amman. The Mackinac bridge was designd by David Steinman and it is his masterpiece. Steinman also designed the St. Johns bridge in Portland, Oregon.
The Verrazano is longer ;)
Wow, what a country we were. I doubt we could build a bridge like that today. The people don’t exist.
I met a guy while out servicing communications equipment in Mount Pleasant whos uncle was one that had fallen into the concrete as it was being poured.. I shook his hand.. wish I got his address.
My grandpa was one of the men who died but they never found his body. Robert Koppen
MY FATHER, ROBERT BORGENHEIMER, WORKED ON THIS BRIDGE AND THE BLANIC BRIDGE IN DULUTH MINNESOTA.
How long did they take to build that bridge? Nelson Lachappelle Jr from Vermont.
The bridge authority was appointed in June 1950. They had to pick an engineer, make plans and blueprints, and sell bonds to pay for it all. Construction began May 7th 1954. The bridge was open to traffic November 1st 1957. This is from the book I have.
This summer I wanna go to the island because when we went it was winter and it was freezing
i remeber driving across the 5 mile

And that, my friends, is Pure Michigan.
Look out my office window and there it is!
96 million to build then.... today it would be 938 million and change ....just under a billion....
