I've been experimenting with a similar concept on FWD cars. while trailbraking, I give it a little throttle to cancel out the braking force on the front wheels, allowing the front wheels to fully focus on turning the car rather than slowing it down. the rear wheels will still be braking, so the weight balance will be towards the front like in normal trailbraking. if the trailbraking is too strong, I get a little oversteer which could be useful sometimes. this is useful in both long and tight corners like the handbrake method, but with more control over brake force. a work-in-progress theory that I'm not sure how to test is that if my front wheels are accelerating while doing this, it may actually be helping rotate the car in that direction. all of this was inspired by that stupid video of a yellow civic parallel parking by doing a burnout and handbrake pulled
that's a rally technique, I use it in Dirt rally 2 a lot for FF and 4WD cars, I learned it from Team O'neals YT th-cam.com/video/bgg5WWfMWzM/w-d-xo.html
This video was extremely validating, thank you, I’ve been really surprised at the amount of consistent understeer in almost every car, so this is super helpful.
Pretty unrelated, but I highly recommend using the gyro in the controller to steer rather than the sticks. It's way smoother! Also mimics your natural desire to steer with a wheel.
@@pogtuber5146 Not any more than using a real wheel! It's a very light controller. On the straightaways I'll just rest my elbows on my knees. You'll notice yourself doing some really weird motions since the controller isn't attached to a steering stalk haha. But yes, hold it vertical like a steering wheel! Usually falls somewhere in between when you're focused.
it's funny you mention this about slow corners. I actually thought this was very weird but I thought it was just me. Because I play so many dirt games I naturally just started using the handbrake to compensate and it worked. thank you for making this video and bringing this to light I know that making these videos is a lot of work!
I was trying to find out why the steering was so awkward in GT7, glad that I stumbled upon this excellent video. I don't understand why this bug can even pass through QA... And honestly, that rear wheel traction modeling is so broken in GT7, it felt backwards when compared to GT Sports
I don't think this is a bug, per se. I think what it's doing is "smoothing" the rotation of the steering wheel, because irl you can't flick a steering wheel hard left or hard right instantaneously like you can with an analog stick. Still annoying, and definitely feels wrong when you're trying to get around a tight turn, but I see what they were going for. Hopefully they add an option to adjust the input speed so that it at least "smooths" as fast as a racing wheel can be spun.
@@brokenhalo22- ya but you should be able to overcome this easier at low speeds when you set steering sensitivity to the highest settings. The fact that people are using handbrakes like this is so dumb and shows you that the system is broken.
I used the handbrake on controller around Tsukuba in the Moby Dick mission, especially in the hairpins. I noticed it made a huge difference. Glad its been highlighted.
I tried this in gt sport but I found the car oversteering too much, causing me to spin out. Wow! So much faster in your timing. I will employ this in GT7 with this tutorial 👍🏻 Thanks bro

I'm trying to learn no assist and manual transmission driving after playing since gt2. It took me a solid 2 days before I could even complete a lap and cranking controller sensitivity to max was one of the first things I did. Have to give this a shot!
That's how i beat that hellish licence test when you have that white honda NSX doing the airpin in the Suzuka circuit. Glad to know this is a legit technique. It's also really usefull in circuit like Laguna Seca.
Here’s another trick with the handbrake that works for me. After a long straight with an up coming hairpin, you’ll need the entire braking zone if using abs. Those rapid fluctuations of braking force to keep from locking up are costing you deceleration rate. I’ll brake a little later and use a few taps of handbrake for fine adjustment between abs weak or default and abs off.
I've been instinctively doing this since GT1 and always thought it was just a crutch because I was bad, I didn't realize how much of a disadvantage playing on controller is all this time
yep, thats a technique that i have used i think since gt2 or 3. i've only used a controller, and giving a flick to the ebrake helps rotate the car. also messing with heavy rear brake bias, and front and rear toe. but like you said, timing and amount is key. great video on how to use it.
Keep in mind! Your car might just be too low.. literally. I had this same issue in my maxed out R32. Fantastic car, but hairpins were god awful. I thought it had to be a bug. But I had it slammed all the way down, so tires couldn't steer at speeds under 35mph. So I lifted it 20mm all the way around... viola.
I made a video about that weeks ago - that's not the issue here. If it was, this wouldn't work on the circuit experience with a stock setup, too. The controller just turns less.
I noticed it with a couple cars if it's to low it won't turn, I've tapped the handbrake a few times I use to do it in older gt games im guessing you need to go hydraulic on gt7?
@@Harmonic14 i can't even argue but i have seen the handbrake being used plenty times to give rotation , maybe not so much in full fledged race cars , not being a dick with my comment just saying i have seen it being utilised
I agree, so there is a certain few license tests with a hairpin and using the handbrake made me faster on controller, just tapping it not holding the handbrake…
Interesting, as someone who usually sticks to rally, I've spent a lot of effort in GT7 fighting the urge to hit the handbrake on any remotely sharp turn lol. I'm on wheel (or motion controls when wheel isn't viable), so not super helpful for me personally, but I'll give this a go on some hairpins for the hell of it and see if I accomplish anything besides a donut. That was the thing that was frustrating me with turning. I'm still trying to master the handbrake tapping. But I have noticed it helps when I get it right. But good lawd I was getting pissed on these kinds of turns.
The best way to deal with this is to use gyro. It completely redefines how responsive turning is with the controller. However, It has a learning curve.
I’ve been using that myself problem is when you try to use it like a wheel and try to continue rotation and it cancelling any input! But I’m upto license test s-7 all gold before using gyro steering
I first used a 10-20% handbrake on the 125cc Kart while going on Tsukuba. That right hander after the Left hairpin just seemed in between braking and just lifting the throttle - so I started trying that :-D
I also use the handbrake to get the car to down shift while cornering. On cars that loose rpm when cornering just flick the break and it'll down shift or get the rpms up a bit.
I figured this out after grinding haaard and watching record time trials where people were clearly using the handbrake (even though they were most definitely using a wheel)
as a rally fan, this doesn't looks like big news for turning around tight corners... but in saying that, the length of time you have the handbrake on is much less than what rally driver would normally do, even on tarmac races. I have been using the handbrake for similar purpose (with less effect cuz I'm not Top Tier) and it does feel a lot easier to turn but it really depends on the level of the car. I think handbraking like this will be less effective on slower cars as the overall speed will be slower... but since most people only drive Gr3 and Gr4, this will be very useful there!!

I also think what’s helping is the fact that applying the e brake kicks the car into neutral helping the car rotate since you unloading the power to the wheels. Just my 2 cents
That doesn't happen in any of the examples I showed here. Also, being in neutral will make it worse in a lot of cases since you don't have engine braking slowing you down.
I've been trailbraking on all of my FF and AWD cars in turns that use 1st or 2nd, some MR cars can make it work, but it needs some finesse. I'm on PS5 so I go up until I hit the force feedback and modulate the throttle as needed, on PS4 it'll be up to 20% brake. I've tried the handbrake method, and couldn't get it consistent lap after lap, but the trailbraking method clicked for me. The steering (and the body roll linked to steering input) issue definitely needs fixing. So that and also when I turn off assists, and I don't turn the wheel driving around a corner, that steering input shouldn't budge and I should hit that wall at speed, but nope, not in GT7. So many races FUBAR due to the steering making minor adjustments on controller mid corner, might help others, but it needs work.
been doing something like this like always. Since GT Sport i used the motion sensor steering and that's a lot better! Still use the handbrake if the car understeers a ton.
Wish there was a toggle for wheel and pad players on the daily races. I don’t mind getting smoked but the time difference between the two inputs basically creates a division in the races around who is competing with who
You are a very good youtuber and deserve a sub, I like how you explained how to make sure not to over use the hand brake or under use it, also I like how you tested it on All platforms of drive terrains.
I have found that using controller is much easier than wheel. For example this circuit experience on Deep Forest sector 2 it is soooooo difficult not to spin out using steering wheel - but once you try with controller you have much easier time through these corners. All assists off, only ABS on. I am thinkiing it is because you can steer with controller much faster than using a wheel. Or there is always some kind of assist in the background which we dont know about.
I think the controller filtering helps this particular car because it snaps off throttle, but once you get the hang of it on wheel, it's not too bad. It just takes longer to get used to than controller
You can steer with motion controls. I’ve been saying this is a superior form of input to the analog sticks for a while already. Heck, people play hardcore sims on PC with motion controls on the DS4 for the same reason (but games like ACC are a lot worse with controllers, GT7 is relatively good).
Just like in previous GT games, the max steering angle allowed on analog stick is somewhat a function of grip, and car speed. Which is why you just flick the stick if you get your speed right in most corners. Very intuitive but can be restrictive in hairpins. This trick probably bypasses that so you get more angles before the handbrake kicks in. I still would not recommend doing this. If possible please test the motion control config, and see if the steering angle is also limited by this function. Back during GTSport days I have seen people setting record laps with it. Takes training but surprisingly neat.
I don't see why you wouldn't recommend doing this. There's nothing to lose once you get it right, and it just makes you quicker. I'll definitely test the motion controls though
Imo, handbrake will not lead to consistent lap times & it's not available on gr4 cars & above in daily races. Keeping brake balance at the rear will force more rotation & help you turn better. Also if you're using handbrake, keeping the sensitivity to 66 will be helpful. ✌️
Every top controller player uses the handbrake whenever it's allowed. It's faster and easily consistent with minimal practice. It has since been removed from Sport mode since this video was released
Its funny, I totally found out that I could recover sharp turns (aka not run off track due to missed braking point) by applying the handbrake. I never thought to use it in normal situations!
I've noticed the controller's max steering angle depends on the speed the car is driving. At 90km/h (60Mph) I don't get to full steering lock anymore, at 75km/h (45-50Mph) I do. Also the angle speed is a lot slower on controller because of the 'filtering' (which I believe to be nothing more than steering aids when I compare to ACC on the controller). I've seen VQS_Haku use his handbrake too in short taps on the hairpin at Suzuka while watching his world record attempts on Sport. Great video, thanks!
@@EmilsAdventure I've tried the upgraded steering angle when I started playing, but then I figured there would be even more steering angle that needs to be controlled by the same distance on my controller. But I will try again and see if it improves my turning radius at certain speeds. I would appreciate a true testing course/ground in the game though!
That's the equivalent of driving with hand brakes only. On all vehicles the front brakes are what are use to stop the car mainly, that's why you see in race cars the front brakes are so large
Great video as always my man. Congratulations on 8K subs, here’s to 10K. I felt like I was dying in slow corners and was running a looser setup than I was comfortable with trying to compensate.
I have same problem but with wheel! Especially these last hairpin deep forest. A while ago i try handbrake to but it just feels weird to do that. I can do thia turn but my rear comes very easy, cant handle this turn consistent.. mostly to slow or to fast and spinning. Thx m8
Good tip specifically for rwd cars imo, awd and fwd I would say will have more consistency left foot braking, but maybe can throw this in n specific times or just for hot laps. Good research 👌🏽💯
On wheels you don't need the filter because you have so much wider turning to pinpoint direction of the car.. here is on who strugled with this slow corner test Everyone hates Gran Turismo 7’s A-9 License Test | The Loadout and this might be better with using the handbrake trick. On the International A license i strugled hard on the LeMans test, even with fastest setting on filter. The superfast car strugled to change direction fast enuff because of filter setting, so on the S turns i had to slow down speed more then with a wheeel.
Yeah it has been a problem for a long time. Some of the license tests are affected, obviously the ones with a key corner being a hairpin it can make a huge difference
Now THIS is a trick, most others labeled as tricks are merely set-up adjustments to normal things like turning off all traction control. I'm sure the makers didn't intend the E-brake to be used this way. Is there a way to calibrate your wheels and pedals to the game like every other racing game I've played? All I found was you can adjust your force feedback and somewhat the wheel sensitivity but nothing for the pedals and further into the wheel like say in Project Cars?
I use a controller. I just want to be able to drift my beetle gr.3. But GT7 is so different to Sport, I can no longer do my long long drifts, especially on Tokyo South Inner, those containers.
I’ve notice that the clutch has an ignition cut off which can act like a poor man’s clutch in some cases Too bad I didnt spend 300 dollars on a wheel that doesn’t feel how I want it too just to get the full feature set of the game 😅
That is so irritating, that kind of corners. Same thing is on Spa, on the last corner and ond the first corner. They always get me passed on that two corners. My car just won't turn...it is so frustrating.
Kinda off subject but do you recommend 1 or 0 TCS?? I drive the porsche mostly on daily races and I feel on controller that car is kinda hard to drive on O traction control. Any thoughts.. oh and love the videos man!
Funny I'm seeing this video now after figuring out how easy it was to modify my steering angle with a handbrake and gaining almost 1s per lap when negotiating sharp turns.
Interesting video for controller players! PSA: DONT SLAM THE FRONT OF YOUR CAR TO THE GROUND, each car has a different point in which if you lower the front end one more point then you will lose more and more turning angle b/c the tires literally can't turn. It's different for EVERY CAR, so gotta test each one.

Hi can you do a video on drifting and all the different tuning settings, like how to perfectly drift a corner without spinning out?
I have friends on wheels and times are no comparison to my controller times, when comparing leaderboards
Thanks for this. Hopefully it will help with the suzuka hairpin (which is painful with a controller)
i used to do this tapping of hand brake back on GT1 on the normal car race using viper gts.
been doing something like this like always.
Thanks
I have found that using controller is much easier than wheel. For example this circuit experience on Deep Forest sector 2 it is soooooo difficult not to spin out using steering wheel - but once you try with controller you have much easier time through these corners. All assists off, only ABS on. I am thinkiing it is because you can steer with controller much faster than using a wheel. Or there is always some kind of assist in the background which we dont know about.
I think the controller filtering helps this particular car because it snaps off throttle, but once you get the hang of it on wheel, it's not too bad. It just takes longer to get used to than controller
I was disappointed that I couldn't use the handbrake in this week's civic race but left foot braking works beautifully to rotate the car. Same idea.
they need to get that sorted, because in the real world on that technical of a course, drivers would use the handbrake
You can steer with motion controls. I’ve been saying this is a superior form of input to the analog sticks for a while already. Heck, people play hardcore sims on PC with motion controls on the DS4 for the same reason (but games like ACC are a lot worse with controllers, GT7 is relatively good).
I've been doing this by myself for like a week now hahaha I didn't know someone would done a video about it 😳
Do i need the tuning part handbrake in the tuning shop or it just works on every handbrake? Also does the steering angle tuning part help?
You don't need to buy the part. Steering angle doesn't do anything to solve this problem
@@Harmonic14 I don't recommend it because I simply don't want to see people spinning in Sport mode when trying to do this lol. Not that it's bad.
@@mimimimeow if you practice it, you won't spin. Just like learning motion controls, it takes training.
Glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this
What button are you using for the handbrake?
Love this info!!
X
Imo, handbrake will not lead to consistent lap times & it's not available on gr4 cars & above in daily races. Keeping brake balance at the rear will force more rotation & help you turn better. Also if you're using handbrake, keeping the sensitivity to 66 will be helpful. ✌️
Every top controller player uses the handbrake whenever it's allowed. It's faster and easily consistent with minimal practice. It has since been removed from Sport mode since this video was released
Great advise I had started just a few days ago
Some pro drivers use the handbrake to help the car turn, mostly on fwd cars, I've seen it being used loads on hot version videos
Excellent it said "this will make you tent", on the preview. I could not click on it fast enough.....
Maybe upgrading the steering angle helps the issue? Maybe you can even turn faster with it?
@@EmilsAdventure I've tried the upgraded steering angle when I started playing, but then I figured there would be even more steering angle that needs to be controlled by the same distance on my controller. But I will try again and see if it improves my turning radius at certain speeds. I would appreciate a true testing course/ground in the game though!
@@monkeybase01 we kind have a true test in the tuning settings. The g forces tell the true story.
@@EmilsAdventure no they don't. The G force calculation is inaccurate. I have a video demonstrating this
@@Harmonic14 oh cool. I got to watch that, thanks
Do you think that applying the Brake Bias to full rear will help with this as well?
That's the equivalent of driving with hand brakes only. On all vehicles the front brakes are what are use to stop the car mainly, that's why you see in race cars the front brakes are so large
Great video as always my man. Congratulations on 8K subs, here’s to 10K. I felt like I was dying in slow corners and was running a looser setup than I was comfortable with trying to compensate.
Nice Video. Will try this
I have same problem but with wheel!
I don't even have a ps5 and gt7. Still watched it because it was a well put together video. Cheers mate, keep up the good work.
Great video!
Hi. Very interesting video? Do you use a USB handbrake or just the button on the controller or wheel?
Just a button on controller
@@Harmonic14 Ok. Now I was looking forward to a steering wheel mod
Interesting....🤔... Practice practice and more practice.... 👌🏾
Great work as always my friend. Another "like" earned. Thanks for all the time and effort you put in to this videos. Good Job!
The only way to do that would be using a wheelbase that can be configured on PC and saved as a setting
Hi man, im gona try this out now to see how it feels (A+ driver on the controller :D), are you on a PS4 or 5 btw? Im PS4
I'm on PS5
GT7 removed hand brake in general. I just raced my Civic and I wasn’t allow to handbrake!
I use a controller. I just want to be able to drift my beetle gr.3. But GT7 is so different to Sport, I can no longer do my long long drifts, especially on Tokyo South Inner, those containers.
I feel im learnings this right now
Haven't played gran turismo 7 in about 2 weeks gotta download again 😂
I’ve notice that the clutch has an ignition cut off which can act like a poor man’s clutch in some cases Too bad I didnt spend 300 dollars on a wheel that doesn’t feel how I want it too just to get the full feature set of the game 😅
That is so irritating, that kind of corners. Same thing is on Spa, on the last corner and ond the first corner. They always get me passed on that two corners. My car just won't turn...it is so frustrating.
great except PD now almost always disable handbrake in Sport
I've been doing this on some races, the whole time I'm thinking this is faster but it can't be right lol.
Your voice sounds exactly like Falcon from Gameranx
Kinda off subject but do you recommend 1 or 0 TCS?? I drive the porsche mostly on daily races and I feel on controller that car is kinda hard to drive on O traction control. Any thoughts.. oh and love the videos man!
If you find the Porsche hard to drive without TCS then definitely use it lol. It's one of the more stable cars and easy to handle in gr.3
For raw pace, 0 is always best. However, if you're faster on 1, then use 1 until you can handle 0
Use accelerometer steering with the controller, it’s incredible.
Funny I'm seeing this video now after figuring out how easy it was to modify my steering angle with a handbrake and gaining almost 1s per lap when negotiating sharp turns.
How about if you use the motion sense to steer instead od the joy stick?
I have yet to test it, but I've heard of people no longer experiencing this issue after switching, so definitely worth a try!
Yep, I have a video on this. That's not what's happening here though
Thanks you that's a good skill
Lol I do that all the time

The drift king uses this technique on ff cars.
It kills understeer. Done right.
Isnt It Possible change the steering angle (even its for drifts)?
