It's a lot of feeling. My suggestion would be to close your eyes and feel it. Sometimes our eyes trick us and we get hung up on it - but it's really a feeling. Trust your hands.

This is soooo helpful, I have looked all over TH-cam for videos like these. I have been looking for these type of videos because my dad has really long, thick, curly hair and because of quarantine he can’t get his hair cut so I’m going to try and learn how to do it!

Is there any guard on it ??
I use a #1 blade with no guard. It's a detachable blade so it's a bit different than guards where there is some forgiveness but it cuts much better.

Thanks for watching! Yes, building weight means that the length is getting longer towards the top. When the hair goes from short to long - you are building weight. A good visualization is the shape of a funnel, where it’s narrow at the bottom and wider at the top. Remember though - there are so many variations of that, you could take it subtle or extreme.

Do you ask them how much they want off the top or is it already decided by the length on the sides
At this point - I don't ask a lot of questions, I tell them. :)
With that said, to me it's about proportions as in any design. When you cut it proportionally longer on top, it will create more longevity. If you cut the top too short, it will give the illusion of the sides growing out faster. If it's too long and disconnected, then it will be difficult to style for them and the hair will fall rather than stand up from volume. I hope this helps!

Are you taking the sides vertically, or slightly angled closer to the neck? It's hard to tell in the video.
More vertical but then I move the palm of my hand toward the head to create and angle - but on vertical partings if that makes sense.
