How to do Cut Men’s Long Hair with Shears

  • This is a “how to” video on cutting Men’s long hair. It’s all about clean sectioning and control as you move around the head. It’s simple - but remember, simple is not easy. ;)
    You can use this technique for curly hair, straight hair, or wavy hair. You can also use the technique with a shear, a clipper of comb and a razor.

    This is the by far the best technique for cutting longer looser styles. There really is no need to put in to many sections.

    Hello Amanda,
    I am really enjoying watching your process and building the confidence to adopt it for my own clients.
    I wondered if you could explain more about thinking about hair in time as opposed to inches or centimetres?
    How did you determine how much to take
    off in the initial section?
    I have a greater sense of clarity and your pragmatic approach has really resonated with me.
    Thanks for your time 🙏🏻

    • @AllenRayHair
      @AllenRayHair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Oh good, glad to hear. Time is 1 month = .5 inches or 2 months = 1 in"
      When clients come in, you can usually tell how long it's been based on the roundness of the shape, around the ears, the sideburns, the nape area or the cleanness of the ends of their hair. These are all clues to help you determine. With that said, it does take some time to train your eye to how to determine it but it will come if you pay attention.
      For example, when someone uses a guard and it's been cut straight up the head with no shape, usually it will start looking bad in 2 weeks. If it's been tapered along the edges, usually it takes 3 weeks on short hair to need a cut again. When you start thinking in longevity, your clients should be able to go 4 weeks. It seems counterintuitive but no one will be able to create the haircuts you do and you'll develop a loyal following with great tips!

  • @TimelordUK

    You are so amazing Amanda. You have real quality. Can I ask a question as a new barber? If the client wants actual length taking off the back and sides, would you section a horseshoe and then cut the perimeter around the back and sides, and then continue the cut as you show here?

    • @AllenRayHair
      @AllenRayHair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, I never cut a perimeter on a man's haircut, maybe once it's past the shoulders. When you cut a perimeter, you put in a horizontal line which also creates maximum weight (0 degrees = maximum weight). What happens is you spend the rest of the haircut trying to remove that weight, which would also be a BOB (very feminine). SO! In men's hair specifically, you want to work on the interior of the haircut first, then if some of the hairs need to be cut off, do it second. BUT remember, the shorter you go and any horizontal lines you put into the haircut, you're redistributing weight where ever those horizontal lines are. To continue this a step further, vertical sections reduce the weight. This is a fundamental understanding I follow every time I look at a haircut - do I want to increase weight or reduce it? Based on the answer, I change the direction of the sectioning.

    When you cut the bottom section of the horseshoe vertical like that, is that considered "square layering?"

    • @AllenRayHair
      @AllenRayHair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, because square layering is literally creating a square. Since the head is round, that means you'll need to overdirect in 2 areas to create the square corners. I follow the head shape which creates more of a coke can shape if that makes sense? You can also think of it as a paper clip shape if you want to create more weight through the center back without creating corners.

    Amanda, when I do this cut, to me the perimeter around the sides and back looks messy and uneven. How do I fix this?

    • @AllenRayHair
      @AllenRayHair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First, I cut in the vertical shape. If needed, I go through the ends to clean them up BUT never into the perimeter. The short you go, the more you'll redistribute the weight and create more weight along the edges. So usually I just point cut the very ends to even but not cut a horizontal line. If they have very wispy hair then you can create a bit more weight because of the weakness of the hair.
      Another way, you can go in through the bottom section (below the occipital bone), cut vertical sections at a steep angle to reduce weight and length to clean it up without creating a perimeter. I hope this helps.
