that was just a small outpost, usually, the majority of the colony is unscathed and a few hundred termites is still a small price to pay. Matabele ants usually never try to take on an entire termite mound as the few hundred ants would eventually get overwhelmed by the up to a million termites in an average mound.
@adamkhordale Matabele ants are rather conservative about their termite food source and are unable to endanger an entire termite colony and usually only attack the termites foraging sites or satellite nests and not the actual nest proper. Even if they do the efficient termite defense behavior and nest architecture make further entry into the nest much difficult.
@@liverstealer2374 exactly, the matabele ants function best near entrances and the such, but deeper in, the defenses are much more concentrated and they're trying to make the casualties worth the protein they collect which would not happen if they lost too many ants. Its like vikings attacking a large English settlement.
