It's less about ghost matter "dying off", and more about it being cancelled by water. If you remove water, ghost matter still damages you. We know this from the ghost matter cave on Gabbro's island. After it comes out of water, it still hurts you.
This was already known before Echoes of the Eye. The Ghost Matter tunnel on Gabbro's Island is repeatedly submerged in water each time the island lands, and you can safely swim through it while it is submerged, and then it will be deadly again once exposed to air. That was a rather non-obvious demonstration though, which is probably part of the reason they added this ghost matter area in the Stranger.
I wished the story that the strangers were immortals or live very long cause they don't have children in the sun wind ship and when they found the truth of the eye they wanted to go back to thire planet but run of power of the one way journey they made so they made the simulation and they went hibernation till the sun exploded and use its wind power to go back but the interloper wasn't in calculation so all of them died except the prisoner who was underwater for punishment so when our mc free him he wake in real time with our mc and they go to the eye together or even get Soloman and go to the eye together.this will owner the three great civilizations in the physical form not only from the mc memory What do you think
