It’s pretty incredible that Maynard was working on this album and Lateralus at the same time...
Incredible but he couldn’t do it without the music
Yea but lots o time in between albums on both bands.
@@nostabssor Indeed. The singing is great on this track, and the rest of the album, but the music is what really makes it.
The albums were essentially released a year apart. There’s nothing incredible about it. I swear, Maynard fanboys would praise his farts if he put them on an album.
@@07foxmulder That's how they work: like tools. I'm a Tool fan and those people make the fan base look like a joke.
I could listen to that Maynard a capella all day. His voice is just incredible.
My 3rd favorite singer of all time, only behind Mike Patton and Chris Cornell, respectively. Shout out to Freddy Mercury, though...
@@thebassclef626All great singers. Layne Staley is one of my personal favorites but Chris Cornell was definitely the titan of grunge vocals along with him
He has the voice of a GD Angel.
@@thebassclef626all my exact same favorites lol. Good taste ya got there.
Paz tying her hair is what makes it great.
Absolutely!
Love that part in the video too !!!
I want sure if I was the only one!
😜
They seriously need to get her back now that she’s no longer in the Pixies.
She just played with the original APC lineup a few weeks ago for Maynard’s 60th birthday. The clip made my heart leap.
Best part of the video
Rick Beato is from another planet. We need his DNA to produce more like him.
IKR? The 'Cool Uncle' you wish you had/hope you could be ;-)
Actually someone already did extract his DNA to produce more like him that’s why he has kids lol
@@rsdigiomoneyLMAO!
Matt Pinfield.
We didn't get the radio friendly version in Australia. They played the original!
One thing that I think makes this song so exquisite is how every instrument maintains its individuality, while still feeling very cohesive. Every layer itself has multiple layers.
damn those isolated tracks really show how well engineered this tune is. insanely good sounding
Billy is an amazing composer. Who doesn't get nearly enough recognition. You can tell he writes just about anything and I really wish there were more a perfect circle albums as well as ashes divide. His sound is so signature
I still get goosebumps listening to this two decades on.
The "Judith" guitar riff always reminded me of "Spoonman'' from Soundgarden.
YES! I just noticed that today so it's crazy to read your comment from 6 years ago lol 😮
This song builds up to such an intense experience, it grows stronger and stronger and just explodes. I love that. You just want to scream.
When I first told my other musician friends that there was a super talented guy on TH-cam breaking down the song writing, theory, and production of amazing songs, they were very skeptical. Now, I’m a hero to all of them for showing them this channel. And Rick is a hero to all of us!
YES! I've loved music all my life. Remember favorite songs from way back. But as I found out after one of the founding members of KISS, the music teacher at my school asked me to try out for our HS ROCK BAND. One of the 2 songs was Old Time Rock and roll, Bob Seger and I used my parents copy of Live Bullet when I practiced prior. Day of, the Drummer and I drank a couple bottles of Wild Irish Rose 🤢 then I proceeded to sing the entire song in the wrong key. 😆 I had no idea and that kinda killed my Rockstar aspirations so I never took any music courses in college but wish I had. It's truly my first love and the love will always be there. Yet like most of the relationships with women I've had in my 50+years I have NO IDEA what's really going on, just know I like it. RICK is slowly changing that. So THANKFUL he popped up and has been a part of my day since
No one can spew a venomous yet spiritual tone like MJK. God I love it...
Spiritual?
Where
@@tpat90 The part where he says DUDE LSD LOL
@@tpat90that’s the thing about spirit some people can see it some can’t
OK so I just teared up a bit with Maynard's vocals being isolated near the end there. That's some powerful emotion going out into the Universe. Fave singer of all time!
I LOVE hearing all of the parts isolated. So many little details are missed in the wall of sound. one of my favorite songs of the 2000s
Josh Freese is making that song great. Impeccable drumming.
Nothing better than hearing Rick wail on some power chords to start your day. Great video, my friend.
Thanks Aimee!!
Aimee Nolte Music I'm really late to this party. Rick knows Aimee? How cool is that? It's a, a perfect circle.
This is genuinely one of the greatest rock songs of all time.
Truth.
Rick: how the F*ck did I not know about you until just a couple months ago!?!? This series is *priceless* to all of us who love music inside-out. I love how you de-construct the parts, explain *why* something is special or unique, and then NAIL the playing... SMH; man, I love these episodes and can't wait for each new installment. Thanks so much. I know it's a long shot, but can you do something from the "Inside-Out" album by Fate's Warning? Or maybe some early Dixie Dregs? We need more, more, lol.
Dixie Dregs....lol. We dont want Rick to injure himself now do we ?
I feel the same way...How am I JUST finding out about this guy's videos?! I LOVE them!
Me and my brother are sharing the same thought. I can watch the Tool breakdowns all day. This is icing on the cake.
substrate001 hey im from the future and I agree
There's a Spanish channel called Shauntrack that does kind of the same, but of course in Spanish.
That whole album is exceptional! Billy Howerdel is an underrated genius!
Thanks for the video, Rick!
Maynard and APC and Tool just come up with such beautiful original music. No one else compares
The drums in this song are truly awesome. I LOVE how the beat changes in the second verse. Keeps it so fresh!!!
That layering between the guitars and vocals at the end is so killer. It's so cool to hear the 'behind the scenes' on something that you've loved and listened to a bunch of times in the past.
I bought the album for "Judith" but found "The Hollow" to be even cooler--the verse guitar part especially.
I always thought Judith was terribly overrated. I like almost any other song on Thirteenth Step and Mer de Norms better than Judith.
The Hollow happens to be the one track Tim "Herb" Alexander plays on.
We all did.
And Magdalena. 😍
I prefer The Hollow. The vocals flow in a kind of unpredictable way with very little breaks and the frantic drum fills just hit the spot for me. Its similar to the direction of Weak and Powerless. Its just too short. The way it just suddenly ends makes it interesting, but I always want to rewind and hear it one more time.
Josh Freese is one of the best in the game, seeing him live with NIN, APC, and Sting have been highlights of the past 2 decades. Not to mention his work with Devo and The Vandals.
Yes! And now Foo Fighters. I learned of him back in the day from NIN. ❤
I also love the vandals lol
Possibly the greatest song ever. I love APC and have seem every tour and want more.
Such a shame that this episode felt so rushed. Would be great if Rick revisited it!
Freese was killer on this album. A nice little touch was the use of the second hihat sound that was an inverted 20” ride with an 18” China on top.
Jeff Leng I wish I understood what that meant
Yeah totally... *Sweats nervously* I too love 20" chinas on top... And totally know what that means
@@laurendebruijn2325 Imagine a very large set of hi hats. You can hear him playing it on Vanishing (I think)
@@andrewlockett4569 a ride cymbal is the big one that goes "PING" but you can also get a crash sound from it, and a china is another big crash but its more of a BWASH than a crash, almost like a gong
The entire Mer de Noms album is killer, and it hits the ground running with The Hollow.
I really want Paz back in the band. She was APC’s secret weapon. She played bass on the road, violin, piano, did backing vocals. She adds so much to their original sound. Now that she’s out of The Pixies, Maynard and Billy should bring her back in.
Props to the final bridge of the song when Maynard, Billy and Paz sing together
I've been getting goosebumps at that massive outro for about 13 years now.
Josh Freese was absolutely fantastic on that album.
Yeah, right? That groove...so tight.
Josh is great on every album. That video with the NINE INCH NAILS rehearsals is amazing. Great player. He's a fucking beat machine with a perfect metronome.
His playing on that record was so frikn good...its too bad he left APC...cant blame him though..waiting on mister ego freak Maynard with his wine making and lame Puscifer crap..would be tough to deal with..
Cool fact. Tim Alexander was the original drummer. He played drums for The Hollow on this album. Everything else was Josh
Oh definitely. Tied everything together so well.
Saw A Perfect Circle open up for Nine Inch Nails during their Fragile tour in 99. It was by far the BEST show I've been to, and I've been to a lot of shows!!! ❤❤😅😅
This is a fun, smart idea for a series.
1:34 never noticed that interesting panning of the electric before, sounds like it pans right and echoes on left.
Fuck I love this series
i hope he never stops making these
Me too
That moment when Billy and Paz extra vocals come in towards the end .... goosebumps
Great series! You should do Deftones in one of the next episodes.
Pēteris Golubovs I was literally just thinking that. They're so underappreciated
He said in his greatest drum intros vid that he’s going to!
i subscribe to this channel a few days ago after seeing "what makes this song great?" for U2's Still haven't found....and i found out that everything that i love about songs or albums is what Rick's describing in these videos...i worked on radio, on record stores and music magazines..my father was a musician (piano player) i'm 49 and since i was very little my father taught me some things about sound, production, playing and writing...since then every time that i listen anything i try to go into these aspects...but Rick being a producer he analizes much more deep and with more knowledge...and for me those details are substantial...and whats more important: he does it with such passion that even if you don't like or know the songs you're ending interested because how he talks and explains those details......it's a real pleasure for me being part of this channel and learn from the enormous amount of knowledge experience and musical taste that Rick has to share with us...thank you Mr.Beato for being such a teacher and for the energy and (again) passion and efford that you put into each and every video!
APC is one of my favorite bands, I'm really glad u featured one of their tracks. This is an awesome series, keep it up! :D
That was the fastest 9 & 1/2 minutes on the internet! Seriously, I was thinking 5 when I looked. Thanks Rick. I hate that they're demonitised. All I can afford is to pay close attention.
One of my favorites. Such powerful lyrics.
WOW, THAT ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I fricken LLLLLLLLLOVE APC! Great vid, Rick. As always
That's one groovy bass. Great Work Lechantin!
This is one of my favorite rock songs of all time. It never gets old. Perfect in every way.
Now that Billy made a playthrough video of this song, there is a small correction. The tune is in standard C#, not drop B :)
Yep, straight from the horse's mouth.
Drop D not B maybe? ;-)
You beat me to it! 🤙
@@piotr803 nah just TH-cam Billy Judith lesson, he’ll explain in the video that it’s just C# standard
Billy does the lead in C# Standard, but James Iha does the rhythm in Drop B.
I’ve been listening to this song for 18 years and that bridge section was so new to me.
Dude I´m always amazed by how precisely you can play the guitar parts and how much knowledge you have about the tunings the chord shapes etc, you should consider doing guitar cover or "how to play" videos, I would deffinetely watch those :v
I produced 750 bands over the last 25 years. I should know about tunings and chord shapes:)
I didn't know you had a resume like that. No wonder your videos on music production are so great. We're lucky you're here!
David M "We're lucky you're here" Well said!
@@RickBeato what are the most notable artist and or albums you've done!? I'd love to check them out! Live your channel by the way, has cited my boredom during covid. Also still waiting in that other what makes this song great Deftones. Abe is highly underrated as a drummer. Also I think rx queen or around the fur are catchier and more creative drum intros than digital bath you used. Keep up the great work man!!!
A few things to clear up here. The guitar was tuned in C# standard, the verse was played with inverted chords on the E and A strings together at the 5th and 7th frets. Billy didn't use a digitech whammy either, he used a fuzz/octave pedal set an octave up and the bass rolled off on the guitar, I think, from memory he was on the neck pickup for that section
I came here to see a breakdown of Paz tying her hair in a knot in the middle of the song
I can't think of a more powerful vocal ever than this song. It has all the anger and power of Opiate era, but control and wisdom of an older Maynard. I've never been able to hear this loud enough to satisfy me. Luckily, along with several tool shows, I got to see perfect circle live. To complete the tour. Need to catch Rick live. Ever take these interviews on the road? You and Rhett should tour
wicked tone for the bass !! Paz is a mean lady yeah
Dude, this is insane. I listen to all these songs while biking to school, and as a musician, you have allowed me to dive deeper into each one as to its theory and the decisions made by the artists. Keep it up.
LOVE your videos, this series is great. I've learned a lot from you. How about making a "What makes this song bad"? Greetings from Mexico.
Arturo Lugo so bad that is good lol
interesting idea, I support that!
I would watch this series
Es la foto tuya una referencia a chetes?
Avith Ortega Every nofx song lmao.
Hands down the most informed analysis of music production I have seen. Big fan of MJK projects. It's great to see someone help me understand why.
Oh yes have loved this tune for a long time! I nominate/hope there will be Cure song in the future.."Lovesong", "Fascination Street",or "Friday I'm In Love" etc etc?
Bodyknowledge 77 YES PLEASE
wow! yes, fascination is a great track to dissect. so many layers..
my favorite song of APC!
Thank you for this video
Why didn't you make mention of Paz putting up her ponytail?
I love that part of the video.....smoking hot she is.
I swear I nearly ripped my dick off at that point...😂😂😂
I am in good company in this particular comment section. That is my favorite part of the video and I get at least a 3/4 mast every time I see it.
paz is bae
James Iha either
What I love about these videos is that I'm finding out sooo many great songs and artists, thanks Rick
Thank your goooood!
Billy is A Perfect Circle, pure genius ✌️
You are seriously one of my favorite people. Everything you do is gold and such amazing taste in music. But I'm a musician as well, so that's probably why I feel that way. Love the new series by the way.
Love the series Rick! Didn't Andy Wallace mix this album? This is, by far, one of my ALL time favorites to this day! The whole CD is just perfect. No pun intended.
no, wallace mixed emotive and Thirteenth Step, this was mixed by alan moulder
Victor Campos Thanks for the clarification. Love the drum sound on this!
The lyrics in this song could not be more cathartic for me personally. Genius
Certain parts of this song remind me of certain parts of When The levee Breaks. Specifically the ending, but something about the whole vibe too.
I discovered this song very late and i was dissecting it while listening. The drums, the guitars, the harmony...and the drums...
and don't forget the drums...and then i discover Ricks channel doing it professionally ...perfect.
Although i was still hoping for more talking about the drums...
Great channel btw!
Can "Three Libras" be next?
I 2nd this... well 35th'd it if you count the likes.
Yeah man I wish he would’ve done that one instead. This was a great choice but it’s still difficult not to feel a little bit disappointed and passed over.
@@GolfTool I like what you did there.
@@GolfTool Rick didn't want to throw the obvious I guess
Probably my favourite APC song and video, Paz is just so good on bass as well
This is incredible. I've been a Tool/APC fan for 18 years and I've never heard Judith like this before.
Is there any way you'd consider doing The Patient or The Grudge by Tool? I would absolutely die.
I love your videos. This is a great breakdown of the music. This drums are savage. And the bass is killer. Love how Paz plays the bass
I know this is old, but there's no notice of PAZ??? The Bass is HUGE is this!
Love it when you break down these songs. Such a inspiration for life when they came out. Now that I’m more interested in the inner-workings of music it’s awesome to see what all goes into these hits
this song was the first time i was attracted with this band......so awesome riffs and catchy too........please do "Schism" by Tool.....u gotta do Tool more often......
that bridge !! pure beauty !!!!
the bass line is epic gives the song great deep tonality
It helps to break down a song this way. Makes me want to try playing it with my band. I like that you show how all the parts work together to make a certain sound.
This is the song I most wish I wrote. Monster drum part, huge slidey guitars, crushing lyrics (read up on the story behind them)... close to my idea of the perfect rock song.
Thdont forget the voice and the emotion
@Conflux yeah that too!
Then again try orestes live version. I welled up.
I recently made a lesson on this song, I prefer to play it in C# standard. Leading up to the prechorus, rather than 5 8 2, it would be 3 6 0, which for me is smoother. Plus, the B note be isn't really needed. The 2nd gtrst I play with uses Drop B. To each his own.
In “Judith,” vocalist Maynard James Keenan is addressing his mother Judith Marie Keenan, who suffered a stroke and was restricted to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
Judith died in 2003, three years after the release of Mer de Noms. Following her death, he scattered her ashes across one of his vineyards and named one of his wines after her, honoring her memory with his Cabernet Sauvignon, Nagual del Judith. A nagual is a protective deity in form of a plant or an animal.
thank you for sharing this kind of videos, it´s like someone disassembling a swiss clock just to show us how it works, and it gives us a new way to enjoy music. Greeting from Costa Rica Mr Beato.
Those drums.... damn.
Every song from A Perfect Circle is great! I enjoyed this session.
How'd he not talk more about the awesome melody that happens in the second verse
The drum fill between the first and second chorus is what I wait for when I hear this song. Simple and very effective.
Tool next
Schism or Vicarious
Maybe even Pot
Rick already confirmed that he'll be doing Schism. Cannot wait for that one!
It will be probably an 1 hour episode heheh Difficult, beautiful song :)
Vicarious, Jambi or The Pot would be sick.
I'd love to see hurt by nine inch nails
One of the best rock songs ever. So creative yet simple
I was hoping for deftones, but APC is just as fine (: WOOHOO
That digital whammy guitar solo is incredible... best part of the song!
they use C# standard tuning on this and most of their songs. billy says it himself in a premier guitar video of this song.
I am not a musician but this channel is a joy to watch and learn more about music. Excellent.
Do something by Faith No More! Anything from Angel Dust would be awesome.
Paulo Aloisio That would be even better.
Ashes to Ashes
Everything’s ruined
Kindergarten!
"Jizzlobber" plz
Rick, this was an incredible breakdown. The fact that you have the stems somehow too on top of it-you're the thanking man.
What makes this song great? Well let me run you through each part because every part is great lol
Rick your channel has shown me many things and tricks well in better words techniques that they used to record these beautiful and epic songs. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us. ✌🏻
APC was a badass band. All four musicians are top tier.
New favorite from Beato!
Definitely one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard in my life for sure! I totally disagree with its message but the music is just a masterpiece, genius work.
For my money the coolest part is the change in bass and guitar groove in the second verse, and that they keep it short. Right after Paz ties up her hair in the video. Gives the song a massive lift.
imagine hearing danny carey tracks solo 😩
Mike G Give me Josh all day.
Balloon poPPeR I agree.. Way more groove
Rob Jarrett I love love love Danny Carey. But Josh is a beast. Probably the best session drummer out there. He's a chameleon. He can blend in any style and it not feel fake. And his chops are ridiculous!
Dude, I don't want my head to explode. It's best if we'd don't get to hear that isolated. Us mere mortals aren't meant to tread there. 😉
Bridge part is absolutely fantastic, thanks for sharing!
