It is one of the first things that struck me on first listen of this album when it came out. He is singing about a holy experience and singing about it as a hole..... but when he is talking about being held in his body it is enunciated and concrete. Great juxtaposition of words and concepts... truly adds to the haunting eeriness, perhaps emphasizing the doubt of the Holy, but but he becomes almost staccato when he is talking about the flesh and body. I would like to say thank you to Tool for writing such great music and also thank you to the hippie standing outside of the waffle house in Louisville Ky for selling such clean acid!!
I enjoyed the schism vid so much, that I've probably watched it 7 or 8 times. I've never been so excited to click on a vid. You should do Tool's entire catalog. 👍👌
It still amazes me that some of your videos are blocked. What the hell do the artists/music groups have against someone praising the property and introducing (possibly) half a million new people to it? Great video. I love the way you break these songs down.
Don't blame the bands. Sometimes it's taken down automatically, sometimes it'seems the management who does not want it. Maybe the musicians would appreciate this series if they found it, but there are so many things going on in their life that they don't have the time to check every copyright infringement, so they risk taking out the proper uses of their music in order to catch the people misusing their music/ prevent them from earning their well deserved money.
I've seen Tool perform several times, always great. What I love about progressive rock/metal, is that it goes on and on and on. You end up in a trance without needing to take any drugs.
I remember running to Best Buy on May 15, 2001 for this album. I would circle the block, so a song would finish when playing it in my car. This song has me in a trance.
“The Dirge!!!”” LoL, YES!!!! I think it’s so awesome that somebody gave it a name! Every time I listen to this, or every time I’ve ever introduced anyone to this song, I always refer to the ending as, “greasy” or “grimy.” But “the Dirge” is just flat-out PERFECT.
Yeah, I searched the comments for this as soon as I heard it. Never thought about it until it was repeated by this guy. Suppose the minor version hides it a little bit, but Maynard loves the lick!!
Rick, you should consider doing DVD's of whole albums done in this format. I'm sure the licensing would be hell to sort out, but I know I would be buying them. There's so much information in them that they all bear multiple watches. Oddly, these are invariably more informative than having the actual producer (and artist together sometimes) going through a recording at the desk. The things you pick out are aspects of a track, like the vocal line at the start, that the people involved could have been unaware of first time round AND second time round.
Tool has an amazing ability to play in 4/4 and convince you that it's not, and to play in obscure time signatures in ways to which you can still bang your head. It's not just the crazy time signatures they use so well, but their gift for sucking an infectious groove (with a H/T to the band of that name) out of any time signature.
It's incredible to see someone who is extremely musically proficient, still getting giddy and excited listening and breaking down tool. Great videos man!
Finally, someone who really appreciates Tool and then can intelligently break down a Tool song. Rick's genius and Tool's genius. Enjoyable synchronicity!
Parabol/Parabola is just an amazing work of art. One of my favorite pieces of music of my time. Born in 1967. Tool is one of the best rock bands of the 2x centuries … so far.
Been listening to this album since it came out, and loudly, and I never noticed how layered that chorus was and it makes it even more hauntingly beautiful and transcending into the ethereal.
Tool was a really good band before Justin. He was the missing piece that put them on a completely different tier. He instantly became an irreplaceable member of the band
I cannot play a single instrument but I can hear all the intricacies in their music that you just don’t hear with other bands, no disrespect to other bands but I do believe TOOL is a step above. Love them.
Kind of weird that an old guy like me, a non-pro keyboard player, likes Tool as much as I do, and perhaps even weirder, that I moved to this region of Arizona because, well, this is where Maynard has his winery. One good thing about accomplishing something in life, is you can pull stunts like that. When I was doing engineering in Antarctica I had Forty Six looping in my earphones and would do a vid on it if I wasn't going to get dinged for copyright. Music is visceral for us, your viewers. And for us engineering types - the breakdown and analysis soothes the left brain, while the right brain is off somewhere else in the universe. I spent a couple weeks in a hospital after a surgeon killed me. When I came back I kept thinking as he said - all this pain is an illusion. This song means a lot to me. Thanks so much.
Yeah. I figure. I got no fanboy (left) in me. At this stage I'm just in it for the aura.... His wine is kind of overpriced. Well, not kind of. Actually.
My mom was a piano teacher. So of course I played for many years, but my young mind never absorbed the theory. 22 years of playing piano & guitar n now being middle aged I’ve finally started to understand the theory I was taught at a young age. As a matter of fact I’ve become obsessed with music theory, n I love the way u explain it as well as making it fun!! I simply came across ur channel at the same time I was doing my deep dive back into theory. I was stoked to see a guy my age, not only teaching Tool riffs but ur an actual fan like me. Nice job brother. Well done!
That 3 over 4 thing: TOOL perfected that. They were getting that element into focus on Aenima. At that point, a few of us suspected that was as tricky as TOOL was going to get. By then Soundgarden had all but given up on all conventional rhythms. TOOL wasn't quite done exploring sophisticated rhythmic groove. But on this song, they probably outdid themselves in perpetuity. It's not the most tech thing they ever did, but Jesus -it's effective. Lateralus is the only work they have along these lines that is perhaps more powerful. It's their Stairway to Heaven.
I was super happy to see Rick chose parabol/parabola. They always stood out to me as super interesting, even in comparison to all of the other great music Tool has released. It's so fun to watch him take a deeper look into the music.
Whoa, the chords you play at 4:34 are the same as in Disposition later on the album. I never realized they were the same as the part Justin is playing on this song. I love it when bands take musical ideas from other songs on the same record and reuse them in a fresh way. I feel like it gives the album an even greater cohesiveness which is wicked cool. Thanks so much Rick, more Tool is always welcome!
Thank you Rick great stuff, Tool is probably one of the best bands around. And I've been around. I've listened to every type of music, and plus being around music all my life when I was a kid growing up in the early 70's I can remember being at family holiday functions and my family singing uncle's playing guitar, panio. And my self being musically inclined. I watch a lot of your videos, thank you again keep up the great work.
Lateralus is a great song but this is my favorite song from the album. Just amazing from start to finish, and my favorite part of Parabola is @19:32. Parabol actually got me through the birth of my son, it helped me focus on the moment and prepared me for what was going to happen. I know I'm going DefCon fangirl here but it's true. I love these videos!
I don’t know if you love this music or if you’re responding to consumer demand (or both) but regardless, so appreciative that you’ve given space to this foundational band of 1992-2006
Says “This is why Tool is amazing” with a giant smile on his face. He appreciates them on a different level than someone like me that has no idea how to make music. This channel is amazing!
DAMN this was a sick analysis. The voicings and orchestration of Tool's music gets such a "thick" timbre that without this video I don't think I could ever have processed all the stuff going on. This is one of THE coolest rock songs ever written. Thanks for tearing it apart and showing the wiring... only increases my appreciation of the music to see these secrets exposed...

I would like to say thank you to Tool for writing such great music and also thank you to the hippie standing outside of the waffle house in Louisville Ky for selling such clean acid!!
Oh my god the end of this comment killed me 😂 never known anyone to get good acid outside a waffle house but I’m glad you had a good experience
I would like to thank you for providing us with such an oddly yet humorously specific comment sir
I feel like I know which waffle house you're talking about
Thank god you god quality acid! It can get pretty dark if you take garbage drugs and listen
He won't be selling there for long as you just shopped him in
Damn, Maynard's isolated vocals are so good.
I enjoyed the schism vid so much, that I've probably watched it 7 or 8 times. I've never been so excited to click on a vid. You should do Tool's entire catalog. 👍👌
I was astonished when he started isolating parts. I love that he has the session file (I'm new to this channel).
It’s because it was in a video game (most likely guitar hero). Vicarious and another song were as well.
@@sonoluminescent No, it because he was a producer and is friends of other producers that he gets the stems of the sessions from.
I don't get it either, TOOL shared it on their so...
It's probably an automatic filter. I doubt bands are trolling TH-cam just to report every channel that talks about their music
It's not the band's its the record labels and TH-cam's scuffed copyright system as well as the copyright laws needing to be updated.
I've seen Tool perform several times, always great. What I love about progressive rock/metal, is that it goes on and on and on. You end up in a trance without needing to take any drugs.
Can confirm.
I remember running to Best Buy on May 15, 2001 for this album. I would circle the block, so a song would finish when playing it in my car. This song has me in a trance.
Derek Simmons i bet you drove around the block 50 times before it was over
I was stuck at a bridge when Schism 1st played!
Rick is a beast. Best of both worlds, he gets raw music and he also understands the theory. Makes for the best musicians and producers!
I think Rick was enjoying the music so much he forgot he was on camera around 20:15. Great video 👍
I just heard the lick. Dam you Adam Neely! I hear the lick everywhere nowadays.
U didnt heat the flat 7 to the lick tho..
Really? I normally smell cheese when I hear The Lick and I didn't smell anything.
I heard it too (minor shifted, though)
Yeah, I searched the comments for this as soon as I heard it. Never thought about it until it was repeated by this guy. Suppose the minor version hides it a little bit, but Maynard loves the lick!!
The whole is greater than the sum of their parts and when one of those parts is Danny Carey that is saying something.
4:45
Adam Neely: *Heavy breathing*
god it drove me crazy
I was about to write a comment about that, man! Well spotted!
Sooo underappreciated comment 😆
I feel very uncomfortable about the fact that the LICCCCC never gets a closure.
How does a human create such heavenly music? Thank you for diving into these tracks!
Rick can do a whole series of What Makes Tool songs Great.
Thats how good Tool is imo
Tool has an amazing ability to play in 4/4 and convince you that it's not, and to play in obscure time signatures in ways to which you can still bang your head. It's not just the crazy time signatures they use so well, but their gift for sucking an infectious groove (with a H/T to the band of that name) out of any time signature.
timwins31 I’ve always felt like his grooves felt tribal
I see Beato, I see Tool, I click
I see Beato, I click
@15:10 wow that high note during the chorus!! This song is the power of 4 geniuses.
It's incredible to see someone who is extremely musically proficient, still getting giddy and excited listening and breaking down tool. Great videos man!
Finally, someone who really appreciates Tool and then can intelligently break down a Tool song. Rick's genius and Tool's genius. Enjoyable synchronicity!
we are gonna just ignore that Maynard almost sings "the lick"?
I was thinking the exact same thing, got excited when I heard most of it in there
Was looking for this comment 😂😂😂🙏🏻
As someone fairly new to Tool....what is “the lick”?
@@helenespaulding9372 Basically a music meme that was born in Jazz music. Search "The Lick" in TH-cam and you would see.
Adam Neely!
I think you'd probably blow up trying to do Rosetta Stoned
I thought the same! Would love to hear his analysis on that one :)
Or 3rd eye
I'd enjoy watching a 30-90 minute mental breakdown
Hopefully he doesn't forget his pen.
@@estebanduarte5051 I was about to say the exact same, lol. Well Played.
Parabol/Parabola is just an amazing work of art. One of my favorite pieces of music of my time. Born in 1967. Tool is one of the best rock bands of the 2x centuries … so far.
First time I heard Parabol lead into Parabola, the hair on my arms stood on end... And didn't lay down until it was over! Such a powerful song!
This guy is opening my eyes to how awesome Tool actually is. Thanks Rick, your music knowledge is astounding
Never clicked so fast.
FernTheTH-camr same!
SAME HERE!
Yep
Ditto
5/5: Will click again.
My favorite moments are when Rick smiles while describing a part in a Tool song. He's genuinely geeking out like a little kid and enjoying the music.
The first part of your comment made it sound like after Justin joined the band got worse, but then i read the rest of your comment lol
Who is Justin, the bass player? Point made.
Agreed, Justin helped push them to the next level.
Controversial! Depending on my mood, I'll take either Paul or Justin. Both awesome.
How often do you see bands like tool?
Be very careful if you meet him. I live in Arizona as well. He's very similar to Neil Peart. If he senses any fanboy in you,it's done right there.
Yeah. I figure. I got no fanboy (left) in me. At this stage I'm just in it for the aura.... His wine is kind of overpriced. Well, not kind of. Actually.
@@musicmakelightning I agree it is. It is pretty good though. He takes it seriously.
+musicmakelightning Check "Tool On Piano" on YT ;)
So pretentious
Holy crapstix !. Hearing the instruments singled out just makes me appreciate them even more.
Well done!
I love this. 19:20 in and he says "Now we're just getting to the good part." What a way to contextualise the musical genius that went before! ;-)
"This is why TOOL is amazing" Rick says. You got it buddy. They are friggin amazing.
I tired to spend my life listening and hanging around people who are smarter then me and I always learn something. It’s way I love your videos.
NEW ALBUM OUT NOW
please to what makes this song great: PNEUMA
Yes yes yes!
...come here my child, out of the darkness...
Yeeees pleeeease. PNEUMA or INVICIBLE or 7EMPEST
Have you SEEN the live video, with the camera on Danny Carey the whole time??? Jesus, that freaking guy is a machine!
Why the fuck would he do that
Maynard's vocals on this track are always astonishing. Hearing the vocals isolated is simply soul-crushing!
@15:10 I never really paid attention to that harmony before. Thank you for isolating it. Mind blown.
It had the same effect on me also.
We need something from Steven Wilson or Porcupine Tree please!
Either Dark matter or any song from in absentia would be awesome!
Yes, surely he's heard of them
One from Fear Of A Blank Planet would be awesome. It has got some cool production techniques
Arriving somewhere but not here
Rick has a ton of options from PT but i think Fear Of A Blank Planet or Arriving Somewhere But Not Here are so perfect for this
Rick, how can you be so CLEVER....??? I'm so envious of your musical knowledge...bless
