      Amazing dude! I just learned at 33 years old this season, and now after 5 days on the mountain, I'm turning from edge edge and even carving smoothly here and there. Definitely lots to still learn, especially proper technique, but happy to be able to ride any run alongside my girlfriend who's been riding for 5 years. She's still in shock I figured it out this fast. Some of us are just naturals 🤙 But watching all kinds of beginner videos was super helpful in giving me and idea of what I was in for. Highly recommend to anyone learning to just soak up as much you can before your first day! Shred on dude!

    Hi Nev, I wanted to tell you that I find your videos immensely helpful. I watched your videos all week and took notes, practiced my alignment with my board on indoors, and visualized how to make these turns. I love the technical explanations. I really didn't understand *how* snowboarding even worked and it was really hindering my ability to use my body + board together. I leaned my highbacks forward today and really practiced getting my hips over my board and today for the first time I felt the magic of a gripped edge carve, and an almost floating sensation as I switched edges which I never knew was possible! Thank you so much for sharing the magic + science of snowboarding. Sending you love and fresh powder days from Manning Park - just a few hours east of you in southern BC. :)

    • @foufoufun
      @foufoufun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      True, riding in alignment allows you to do a gentle wide slalom on a flat surface (and is actually very satisfying to do) but if you do that on a bumpy surface, you'll do something that'll look like side flip, it's actually quite spectacular! Sometimes, you need to be able to slow you down by rotating your body with minimal slalom. It's about all you can do when riding on trails in the wood due to the lack of space.

    There are two schools of thought here and neither is wrong. Sometimes this style works. But for some riders in some situations, a silent upper body facing the direction you are going works as well. The most important points are having fun and riding within your ability.

      Agreed. I’ve been snowboarding since 1991 and I’ve found that there’s a sweet spot between the flailing style and the stiff gingerbread man style he’s displaying. It depends on the run. Mellow groomer? Carve it out perfectly aligned. Steep and variable? You’re gonna be slashing here and there.

    This obviously looks good in a leisurely descent, but the opposite rotation of the legs and shoulders allows for quicker reaction and turning of the board in my experience. I've managed to avoid a collision on the slopes more than once thanks to this. Another thing is that it is worth strengthening the pelvic and core muscles not only before the season. Then we have a stable figure.

    I ride always with my shoulders, hands , hips facing the direction i go , i use my back knee to turn by turning the knee in for the heelside turn and out for the toe side turn.
    When you hold or drag your hand behind your body (or how you call it 'alligned' with the board)
    You shift of lot of your weight to the back of your board while you want the weight more to the front of the board.
    And by leaning more forward you will have much more control on the slopes.
    Only on the powder you want to lean backwards.

    I don't know what to say ... I won't be the best snowboarder but I've been practicing it for 30 years and I think that at least you don't want to swing from toes to heels and vice versa, to have a smoother movement it is important to rotate your torso downstream, make a kind of sway while making the turns. If you do it in a fluid way, even aesthetically it is a very harmonious movement ... I have always thought that those who always remain still, in line with their body, are not a real freerider but someone who only goes to parks. Peace

    "If you have a bump, it is likely you get thrown out of balance... " 0:25
    for my experience a bump is much more brutal if you loose the edge while leaning inward the curve.
    Greatly depending on the angle between the board and the direction of the slope (10° no problem, 90° Huge problem)
    And yeah, you greatly pointed out how important bent knees are...
    My focus is 90% for spotting out those pumps that lead to loosing the edge, but i still have not found the best technique to "swallow" it.
    i ride a soft butterstyle board, don't know if it's less of a problem with a stiffer board - my intuition tells me that a soft board should be better to swallow the pump.
    Looking forward to a great Season - 1 month to go :) :) :)

    I got back into snowboarding a few years ago and I do the wild arm swing/counter rotation turns sometimes. This especially happens on hard, packed snow that is bumpy. No matter how often I try to go back to alignment riding, my body just naturally goes into counter rotating to deal with steeper, narrow hard packed runs.

    A lot of people in these comments are confused between aligned (as in riding with a bladed stance) and counter rotation. You can ride with your whole body facing down hill and still not use counter rotation while turning, that's the point. He rides slowly in the video so you can see the idea, but watch any pro snowboarder and they ride just like this, stale riding slope to trice riding giant AK lines. Speed checking using counter rotation should be used as a last resort as it's unstable, you can control your speed without counter rotating almost all the time.

    Hmm, I agree with some of this and disagree with other parts. What you are doing right is holding your edge and carving. Also, you are keeping your upper body quiet with no arm flailing. This makes you look smooth and controlled. I think the aligned upper body is a symptom of a straight across or duck stance. This "park stance" locks out your hips and won't allow you to face down the fall line. If you try to counter rotate it won't really work. If you turn rear binding slightly forward it will unlock your hips an let you drive them across while keeping the upper body quiet and facing down the fall line. This is key for steeps, bumps, tight trees, and double fall lines.

    Just picked up snowboarding this season. As with everything else, people will always find a "right way" to do it. Some of the best have their own style "right way" or "their way". Look at some of the pro skaters from the 90's who had that swag and style while riding. It worked for them, and it for sure looked stylish and cool. I'm defiantly one of those riders who don't ride inline, and fail as I'm going down the mountain, but as the comment says down below, there is no doubt a brief moment in between failing, when my body is perfectly aligned. But I'm going to give this a try.

    After reading all the comments here, it sounds like more people are bagging on this video than in support of it. I can tell you that after snowboarding for 8 years...you can't really carve if you're counter-rotated. You also won't be in a position to eat the bumps if your weight isn't evenly distributed...which is what ISNT happening if you're counter-rotated. I counter-rotate in the trees and other situations (park speed checks, etc)...but if I'm going down the mountain it's better to be in alignment with board for stability.

      Generally, keeping your body in allignment is the correct form, however different styles of terrain (normally steeper terrain) can often require slightly different body movements and turning styles :)

    And buy yourself an old school camber bord with proper side arc if you are outside the park. Nowadays they call it snowboard for "advanced" riders. It actually allows you to initiate turns an holds the edge.

    Worth noting that stance angles play a role were too. I run a fairly aggressive posi posi stance for carving so naturally my hips are not in line with my board - my whole body is opened up a little more and facing downhill than when I'm riding with a posi neg stance.

    • @SnowboardAddiction
      @SnowboardAddiction  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a very specifc riding stance that the average rider likely won't be running - if you running this style of stance chances are you are more expierenced rider anyway so most likely already know these common mistakes :)

  • @nathanielmediocre
    @nathanielmediocre 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That's great and all but what if you want to go down straighter instead of in curves. When I ride I slow the board by angling the back part with whichever foot is in the back using its heel or toe mostly. This might work but it looks super stiff and especially difficult to perform when you're getting in other's way on an even semi-crowded area.
    If I am wrong please tell me how. (like actually I just want to improve)

    As a skateboarder who can snowboard, counter rotating is a very hard habit to shake because it’s actually a good thing in skating

    • @AntonSafonov
      @AntonSafonov ปีที่แล้ว

      Look at surfers - chest forward, arms at the sides of the board. Look at great snowboarders and carvers - all ride with chest downhill. So nothing wrong with it.

    I find people are forced to counter rotate because they are riding in the back seat. I use the hands at the side to illustrate how hard it is to turn if the rider isn’t on the front foot leading the board down the hill.

  • @christopherbrett978

    Nothing wrong with stability. Especially when locking in a carve. But eventually those shoulders will need to go back to pointing downhill if you want to link those turns.

  • @ozrlanalyst2900

    Instructor here: Nev isn’t even aligned in his demonstrations. He’s starting his turns with his upper body (which doesn’t turn the board) and this causes him to lean very far inside the turn which is dangerous. Seek instructors for professional advice to improve safely. Right idea though about alignment. Also, riding in switch doesn’t necessarily fix counter rotation. Rotation exercises do.

  • @darrenread3136

    A mostly good video, although the pole holding part is wrong. This does not initiate a turn and puts the body off balance. To initiate the turn it is all done in one movement of; lifting or pressing down on the front toes, shifting (not leaning) the weight over the nose of the board, and in agreement with what the host says, keeping your body aligned. By shifting the weight over the nose of the board you are in control and the board does not run away, which is what people are often scared of when learning (and understandably), and driving the board with the front toes and foot. The back foot merely follows and does not act.

  • @simonmarr3688

    alignment ok . I was taught to turn 'feet first' and the kness, hips and shoulders follow. Never to generate a turn with the shoulders. this is slightly different - will try.

      Simon Marr not sure if they mention it in video to start from too(it’s not like that), but you should do all in one time. It’s just when you learn how to ride , you learn it from bottom to upper body as you said.

    Mostly it's just a case of knowing how to carve or not knowing how to carve. Nobody started riding a board by carving. Plus often on crowded slopes, that's the only way to go in order to have lower speed

    I'd like to try snowboarding for the first time next winter. I've been a surfer for more than 10 years. Does snowboarding really looks like surfing as much as it seems? This counter rotating body, where ur trunk is facing forward while ur legs are to the side, is actually common in surfing, where you should not have ur upper and lower bodies so tightly aligned, as indicated for snowboarding in this video. This came as a surprise

      Rodrigo Cortez you’ll be fine bruh. I surf too and tried snowboarding today for the first time in nearly 20 years and was shredding pretty much straight away 🤙🏻

    • @Qurph1

      Yes, it can feel like surfing! Hop up to your feet on your snowboard like you are surfing, look down at your feet angles. Set your binding angles to that. For me that is +27 / +6.
      This video is for teaching duck stance riders to stay potty squatty thru turns, which is what all instructors teach. Personally, as a mtn surfer I don't care for that aesthetic or feel.
      Watch Korua's Yearning for Turning vids to see an entirely different approach to body alignment & carving vs this tutorial.

    I would believe you... except i've been snowboarding for 20 years now and I believe its fine to have a bit of an open stance where your shoulders are pointed in the direction of travel. Am I wrong? I doubt it because Travis Rice snowboards this way, go analyze his style.
