Not just breaking down a complex process into simple building blocks and clearly explaining and demonstrating them - but ALSO doing the whole thing in one take - really impressive verbal flow!!
@malcolmmoore I've been teaching boarding for 17 years, full cert for about 11 years, AASI examiner for 6 years. Out of all the rubbish "pro tip" stuff out there for boarding, I think yours is one of the few worth watching. A couple minor things, like board under CoM isn't always ineffective/inefficient, nor is a skidded turn always inferior to a "thin line/more carved" turn, but as labeled, this is a more basic process video and getting into those details starts to get heavy. Haha. Great basic tips and solid visuals for early season warm up/reminders!
@@NGCM4Can gripping the edge be considered a synonym for control? When should i have the board right under my CoM? What is an instance where skidding is good? I genuinely want to learn. I am starting to think that it's not the turns you do, but more like being able to do all of them and using them properly.
I was confused, thinking “yea I already do that” then when the “what happens if you don’t do this section” come up, I instantly got it. Especially when it comes to the steeper stuff! Great tutorial! Can’t wait to implement!
Absolutely nailed it. Congrats, this is one of the best examples of good coaching. Breaking down complex concepts into something people can see, do, feel and try whatever their level. And best of all it allows people to progress with it and experiment themselves to enjoy finding new things in snowboarding. Honestly great work!
You literally taught me to snowboard with these videos and this exact point is what clicked for me when I finally learned to turn both ways. You're the man! If you have a "how to progress from beginner to intermediate to advanced" video series that would be amazing by the way
This is exactly what i'm doing wrong since forever. Especially when i'm going from the heel edge to the toe edge i do that kick with the back foot pretty much 100% how you described it on the bad edge change section. Always knew i'm doing something wrong there, but it's nice to see a confirmation with some more explanations on how i should be doing it.
Again, love how you continue to break things down in such simplistic terms. Starting my 3rd season at 45+ and you have been instrumental in my progression. Thank you sir!
Malcom you're the best! A lot of instructors just say a whole bunch of things that just happened and shouldn't focus on. You continually highlight the actual CORE mechanics, and demonstrate/visualize them very well. Keep it up!
I started snowboarding at the very end of last season so this is really my first season, and I just realized I'm definitely skidding my turns the way you showed by not controlling my CoM through the edge change. Will absolutely be practicing this! Thanks so much!
Really can’t thank this man enough! I love the sport but was never good at it, tried a few times but always got myself injured. Was almost convinced that I was never going to get better at snowboarding but then found your video! The explanation and demos were so easy and straightforward that I really improved by implementing the techniques and always remembering the fundamentals! I can now truly enjoy every ride and even do the black runs all thanks to Malcolm!
Great video, when you demonstrated the common wrong way of boarding at the end I realised that's exactly me and have always been frustrated why I can't get a good carve. Great simple video .
This makes a ton of sense and is super helpful, thank you. It explains why I've been feeling like I "ski" my snowboard. I recently switched from skiing to snowboarding and in skiing, the center of mass generally swings under the body, rather than over the snowboard like you described in the video. Even after correcting counter rotation and doing knee steering, I've felt like I'm swishing the board and getting a skiing feeling rather than carving or riding the board. This explains why perfectly. Cheers.
Ive been using your videos to learn as last year was my first season. I love your clear and concise way of teaching, and the graphic was an awesome way of showing what I hadnt realized was an issue! Stoked to be out there again soon this year, thanks coach.
Good to have you back Malcolm! Can't wait to start snowboard this season (2nd season for me) and to improve my riding skills with your videos. Happy early season riding!
This is so relevant for ski carving as well! Moving your CoM over the ski rather than emergency forcing your skis past your CoM is the subtle but fundamental difference between being able to feel the edge bite and, well, skidding. So even though I’ve never snowboarded in my life (soon to change that, I hope), I’m subscribing ASAP!
This information is amazing!! Thank you for breaking it down, the difference between shifting your center of gravity over the board versus kicking or pushing past your center.
Thanks Malcolm You just provided the one thing I was missing. Best advice on snowboarding ever! I couldn’t work out why sometimes turning was difficult -once I made sure to shift my weight over the board it clicked. Everything - trees, steep, edge to edge on flats just works now Cheers Chris
Hey Malcom,as the snowboarding season is still a ways away here,I was wondering you could think of some drills / practices people could do to practice these fundementals maybe just while standing in there house with or without there snowboard on? Some drills that just gets your body used to the movements so when we actualy hit the slops we can focus on actualy doing these things instead of learning / practicing at the same time. Love the videos and keep up the great work!
Around 6:50 you mentioned that on steeper slopes, it's common to panic a bit and move your board under your COM. I definitely notice when I'm getting too much speed on a steep slope, I'll kick out the board like that to bleed off some of that speed - is there a better way to do this? Especially when space is limited like on a narrow slope or in the glades?
This is exactly my problem too! I can do edge change decently on not so steep slopes, but once those steep parts come, I find myself skidding just because it slows me down much more. I also have no clue how to get past that. Practice and getting used to speed? Making many more edge changes per meter traveled so that you dont accelerate that much?? I have no idea.
When it is narrow and very steep, there is nothing wrong with this method. It is far more effective to slow yourself down in narrow spaces. The only alternative is daring going for a much faster decent down ind case of a narrow section could be risky and uncontrollable. If your got a lot of room to work with on the other hand try using the all of the slopes width, that's where the true skill shows and those carves really come out.
Ideally you don't want to do it on steeps, but sometimes you don't have the space to turn and on those scenarios you may want to skid the board around.
Learn how to spray. You will learn how to break fast on your spot in a tight situation. Most troublesome situations for would be like a narrow, lilltebit icey, and bowl shaped sloped. The ones where if you break you will only stand on the two most wide points(especially on camber boards) most of the times on hard icey snow. What to do in such case?
It's called "slowing down". It's not a bad technique. If you don't want to bomb the hill, you need to brake. And you brake by "grippy" turning across the mountain (if there's room), or adding a slide in like a stop. This video is misleading in portraying a speed check as a bad turn. It's just a type of turn that also loses speed.
This is really helpful. This is my second season snowboarding, and I'm starting to feel confident. This is going to help me just to remind myself of a simple way of doing what I need to be doing every turn.
I had no idea that what I was doing to get myself to turn was a big mistake (kicking my back foot out). Thank you so much for this video. I took a nasty fall and knocked myself while trying to figure out an edge change before seeing this video. Thank you so so much for sharing.
Ive just done my first day on snow instead of dry slope and I was struggling to get a nice carve skidding every turn. I think practicing this will help! Thanks for the video!
20 years that I didn't understand why I drifted on my backside turn. No teacher (that I paid) was really able to explain to me why. I just applied your advice this afternoon. My backside turn no drifting anymore! Thank you very gratefully from France!
Insanely helpful video, the moment you showed yourself kicking your foot out, a lightbulb switched for me. I knew my turns felt skiddy and chattery, and not even close to smooth, but I never knew why. Thank you!
As a lvl 2 snowboarder I absolutely love your videos. You have such a clear way of explaining the mechanics of snowboarding & I feel like you have helped me to understand what I am teaching and make me a better instructor. Thank you! Keep up the great content ❤️
I have to comment again since Ive gotten out 5 times this season so far and am now utilizing this technique. I have to say, the sequence of getting on your new edge before the actual turn starts is the single best tip/advice Ive gotten out of any youtube vid. What a game changer for me and I think its worth emphasizing that once I started focusing on this my turns have smoothed out significantly. I do think there is a place for skidded turns where you bring the back foot around, mainly icy or really steep conditions, but this one tip of getting on your new edge before the turn really starts is absolute gold. I probably was aware of it but didnt conceptualize/implement it until this video, now its my one ride thought and its been great. Thanks again MM, keep em coming!
@@malcolmmoore Yesss, I'm kinda a beginner( last year was my first season) and I had been working on griping/carving turns and it feels so good on not so steep slopes, but I'm having a hard time turning in steep terrain because griping on turns make me catch too much speed and I get scared. I got a kinda better board for this season and I'll keep working on improving!! Turning on steeper terrain is scaryy :D (even more when you dont feel your wrists anymore)
I mean the level of clarity you bring with your lessons, this one specifically, is phenomenal. You literally showed me what I was doing wrong. Cant wait to try this upcoming season.
Love this video. I feel like I never done a proper turn. Bought my first board, binding and boots this season along with my season pass. Thanks to this video, I am pumped!!! Thank you.
Having that COM diagram/demonstration is EXTREMELY helpful. That's the perfect implementation for people like me who have never snowboarded but are planning to, and do well with visual demonstrations of the HOW when it comes to explaining/doing things. I'd love to see a video on a beginner lesson in turning and stopping using this same device. Gonna have to go through all your other videos. Thanks for the help man!
Thank you, Malcolm Moore. I wanted to find the best online snowboard teacher, which I did in February 2023, practiced what he preached on snow and later on a surfskateboard (snowboard simulation), and put it into practice in the north eastern United States in January 2024. As a new snowboarder, this is SUPER helpful. I'm finding the turning so difficult for myself, but it's helpful to think of it as 1) EDGE CHANGE, 2) TURN... and to remember that my center of gravity has to change WITH the edge change. Excited to go up to the slopes and try it out today and see if it makes any difference!
Clear and crisp explenation and demonstration, I struggle a bit with this and now I finally understand where the skidding is comming from. Ready to test it on my next weekend ride! Thanks man, highly appreciated :)
This video was very helpful! In particular, the visual of the snowboard showing the COM change (while you were going through the motions live) made something *click* in my brain 💙 can’t wait to get back out there this SZN
Cheers Malcolm, I recently moved to Hokkaido in Japan and decided to try snowboarding for a laugh...ended up buying my own gear as soon as I left the local practice slope. Your videos are probably the best for beginners out of all of the ones that I've been watching, thank you :)
Hands down THE most pivotal point in my understanding the edge change in snowboarding. You can actually FEEL the difference when you do what Malcom is stating here from when you're not doing this...skidding or kicking the back foot out or in to make the edge change. However this video tutorial actually helped me to VISUALIZE the entire process of the turn so that I can see AND feel the ergonomics of turning - where my body is in space. Malcom you aced this one! Thank you so much!!
Great instructional video, good flow and demos. Like the way he shows you how to do it then shows bad technique and how it affects the turns. Learning loads.
This was/is extremely helpful. I'm 100% using my front foot as a focal point and my back foot is guiding the turn. I'm going to practice edge change/turn next time out and see if I can improve. Thank you so much! For some reason after watching a million videos this is the one that clicked in my brain on what I'm doing wrong and why I keep catching edges
Waiting for when your videos where coming up. Welcome back to the season! Last season, after rewatching your videos and other youtubers, what you mentioned about not kicking the board to cross the COM makes so much sense. Lean COM across the board, not the other way around. Initially was starting to do correct turns by shifting my COM first before turning and it worked great. But then thinking I got it all down, I went in harder trails and it all went out the door, reverted kicking my backleg to make turns, me regressing my learning. I went back to the slower paths and I noticed i was "kicking the turns" instead of doing what was working. Definitely beginners should learn to turn correctly and get it in muscle memory before attempting to go on harder trails. Ill be spending a few days again just to work in turns and carving.
I've tried to explain this to friends who are learning but you've articulated it so much better than I do lol. From now on I'll just refer them to this video instead of yelling "just DO IT!"
thank you so much! this weekend was my first time snowboarding. Reminding your words I was able to nail it pretty quick! (also gotta admit Ive been skateboarding for some time, which I think has helped my balance and confidence!)
Yes! so good to have you back, Malcom😀 which means 2 things for me: winter is coming yeah! getting stoked! and need to check my technique - yes this a thing i need to work on. As always: this is the best quality quality when it comes to didactics and video editing on youtube. All thumbs up!
This was so professionally explained! Im snowboarding much better thanks to this video! I can even snowboard faster with this and im not going back to skidded turns!
Also, loving seeing you still rocking the Supermatics. Bought some for myself during the off-season and I can't wait to get them on snow. Seeing that you're still rocking them increases my confidence in my purchase exponentially.
Dialing in the straps is KEY! Most of us want to crank our straps down. With the supermatics you don't want crank um down, you want them just enough so you're secure. I had major issues early on getting in and out of the bindings until I figured that out. I lent them to my son and he was having the same issue. Just don't overtighten on your first run and should be good for the day. Great binding, but I purchased my second pair of burton step ons for this season. Less moving parts more locked in feel and quicker edge transition.
Thank you so much for these videos, you are a great instructor first and then a great snowboarder! In fact I believe that you could teach anything to anyone!
That's the classic school for directional board with the back foot at 0° angle. The one for flexible true twin boards involves a duck stance and more ankle techniques. It should always be reminded for the beginners that relatively stiff quality boots are of utmost importance to transfer body weight on the edge. Good video.
Not just breaking down a complex process into simple building blocks and clearly explaining and demonstrating them - but ALSO doing the whole thing in one take - really impressive verbal flow!!

Great instructional video, good flow and demos. Like the way he shows you how to do it then shows bad technique and how it affects the turns. Learning loads.
Thanks so much 🤗😃🙏
Best piece of advice this!!
Now I know the difference between edge change and turns. Very clarifying!
Awesome!
This video is golden, I didn''t realize I've been doing this mistake until I watch your video. Much appreciated!!
No worries glad it helped 🙌🙌
Snowboarding Season has started and my favorite youtube teacher has begun his lessons again!
Thanks!
He's back! Best snowboard channel on TH-cam.
Appreciate that!
The visualization is awesome. Great way to explain to new comers on the slope!
Awesome, thank you!
We want the red S, the yellow board, the red dot and a yellow duck all together for good measure!
Great video Malcolm, ive been snowboarding for 10yrs and love how i learn so much from your tutorials. Have an awesome season mate.
Your a legend.
Thanks, you too!
Thanks for this simple rule and two-step sequences. I'll call it first principles of snowboarding
Such a simple thing but not obvious, thanks for clearing this up! This is precisely what was holding me back
You're welcome ✌️☺️
So good at explaining! Every beginner should watch this 1000x.
Thanks so much!!
I do exactly this on steeper slopes. My plan for this season is to improve my poor technique. Great video, thank you!
Thanks, Ive been boarding quite sime time now. Freeride and park as well but sometimes didn't understood why I was skidding
I legit have never snowboarded and feel like I could give it a shot after this video. Youre an exceptional teacher. Well done! Happy Holidays!
Thanks so much happy holidays back at ya!
Awesome, sounds like you're able to self assess your own riding now, this will make improving way faster!
I've tried to explain this to friends who are learning but you've articulated it so much better than I do lol. From now on I'll just refer them to this video instead of yelling "just DO IT!"
Haha 😂😂 thanks 😊😊
Can't wait for the season to start here. Thanks for getting my mind right before I even get out there
thank you so much! this weekend was my first time snowboarding. Reminding your words I was able to nail it pretty quick! (also gotta admit Ive been skateboarding for some time, which I think has helped my balance and confidence!)
That's awesome well done!! Enjoy it 😊🙌✌️
Malcom!! Hell yeah, it’s my second season this year and I’m psyched! Thank you for the confidence
You’re such a great teacher! Great content. Your vids really helped me improving my posture and technique . Kudos!
Thanks so much 😊😊
Thank you, Malcolm! Fantastic instruction! I can't wait to take these ideas to the slope
Thankyou Jeff, and I really appreciate the donation, very kind of you!
Got 3 snowboard lessons and no one told me this, I managed to do the exact mistake you're talking about and struggled. Thank you.
You're welcome!! Hope it helped!
Yes! so good to have you back, Malcom😀 which means 2 things for me: winter is coming yeah! getting stoked! and need to check my technique - yes this a thing i need to work on. As always: this is the best quality quality when it comes to didactics and video editing on youtube. All thumbs up!
I have seen a few tens of videos, and I haven't seen the edge change indication in any of those videos! Thank you, and I cannot wait to try it!
Enjoy 😊🏂✌️
This was so professionally explained! Im snowboarding much better thanks to this video! I can even snowboard faster with this and im not going back to skidded turns!
Amazing I'm so pleased 😊😊
Also, loving seeing you still rocking the Supermatics. Bought some for myself during the off-season and I can't wait to get them on snow. Seeing that you're still rocking them increases my confidence in my purchase exponentially.
I had the same thought 😂, with the same circumstances!! Can’t wait to use them this season! Wishing all the best for you this season!!
Get them properly dialled in with the straps, but yeah, makes my life easy!
yeah seeing them again just reminded me that i need to add them to my shopping list :0
@@icey35 I didnt know this binding before this video, and it is really tempting LOL
Wow that was like going to church ! It was great lesson coupled with great illustration !
Welcome back! My literally favorite snowboarding teacher.
No matter how liked this video becomes, it will forever be underrated ! one of the best educational videos I've ever seen
😊😊😊 thanks so much 😊😊😊
brilliant, im not a beginner but i have friend's that i would love to help out. this is a really straight forward way of explaining
Thank you so much for these videos, you are a great instructor first and then a great snowboarder!
In fact I believe that you could teach anything to anyone!
Haha, don't encourage me to make more TH-cam channels!
Excellent- the example of the bad fishtailing at the end reallly helpws
Woahh. Finally I understand why I skit a lot. This is the problem.
Definitely doing this exercise this season.
That's the classic school for directional board with the back foot at 0° angle.
The one for flexible true twin boards involves a duck stance and more ankle techniques.
It should always be reminded for the beginners that relatively stiff quality boots are of utmost importance to transfer body weight on the edge.
Good video.
