  • Sebastián's mission is to facilitate healthy discussions between men and women that challenge the conventional gender roles established in a male dominated society.
    Sebastián Molano, a native from Colombia, is a development worker with extensive experience in Latin America and the Caribbean. Driven by a passion for social justice and equality, Sebastian created the Defying Gender Roles group (www.defyingenderoles.org), an initiative that contributes to deconstructing harmful gender roles traditionally attributed to men and women in society. He is also a regular contributor to the Good Men Project and Words in the Bucket.

    Women earn 20% less than men? That just about sums up the quality of this talk. Acknowledge the violence of women against men, both physical and psychological, the societal and legal advantages that women have over men, the priveleges that women enjoy when it comes to choosing partners to name but three. Acknowledge those and then maybe we start to have a dialogue about gender roles.

    just read an article about a female teacher who had a sexual relationship with a male student. She was sentenced to 5 years probation and no jail time. If it was a male teacher and a female student in the same situation the man would be immediatley tossed in jail and never see the light of day.

    If "women get 20% less money than men for the same job", why don't companies just kick out all the men and replace them with cheaper but equally efficient women?
    This guy clearly doesn't understand economics.

    • @maxinewarnest894

      That happened with clerical work and many initial computer jobs that started out being higher paid 'men's work and respected positions and lower paid when dominated by women.

      @@maxinewarnest894 You're comparing apples to oranges there. Computer jobs of 1970s were actually difficult. You'd need to be a computer nerd to understand what's going on with the code. Computer's past 1990s, and especially beyond 2000s, have much more simpler interface and program designs, especially if you're not doing anything which requires computer literacy, like using basic Words..
      So of course larger number of people (men and women) can use them after 2000s, which drives down the labor price. But it's not the same work as in 1970s and earlier.

    More than "what it means to be a man" it's a question of what society demands of men and women. As individuals, we may find discomfort in complying with what society's demands.

    Excellent talk! The pressure that boys and young men receive to prove their manhood in conventional-macho ways is still huge, despite modernity. So great that these conversations raise awareness about the need change these harmful cultural patterns.

      I don't really agree, a man is a man, a man should impose himself, should show strenght, and I don't mean that we should be violent or something like that, but you gotta whoop a man's ass sometimes, when he steps outta line. No matter how modern our society is, our basic instincts are still the same. Women are attracted to the leader of the pack, to the man who can provide for them and for their kids and can offer protection. Though the whole alpha male - beta male shit is a harsh reality, it is still a reality and we gotta aknowledge it.

    • @sebastianmolano
      @sebastianmolano 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      So, if a man ought to impose himself and "whoop a man's ass sometimes" how do you do it without violence? If you ask me, violence is used to show strengthen but it is actually the ultimate expression of weakness.

    • @sebastianmolano
      @sebastianmolano 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Take a step back. Why are you in a fight? You can always leave, you can always try to reason with the other person. I am pretty sure that your partner will rather have alive than hurt. You are describing to be fearful of showing weakness, especially if your partner (a woman) is by your side.
      You are justifying violence. Next thing then, you are in a fight with your partner and then you justify to use it again. Violence is always an alternative. You decide.

      Sebastián Molano Alright man, more power to you if your life works like that, I'm really glad to see people who don't need to use violence in certain situation. I do, though, and even if I have a choice sometimes, there are cases in which I prefer to throw down, just because I don't think a few bruises are so dangerous, and sometimes the other person really needs a fist or two. There are cases in which I deserve a fist or two, and to be honest I wouldn't have a problem with receiving them if I knew I crossed the line.

    • @sebastianmolano
      @sebastianmolano 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I see your point. I understand what you are saying and indeed, violence is always an option. The problem is that using that option leads to more violence.

    The men today should be versatile in every field, but no coward, or weak, do the same things that a woman do also, but when the times come to use the physical strenght or any thing that "define us as a basic man", we have to use it!!!

    Men have a crisis of masculinity. Men are given contradictory notions of strength and weakness. Our aggressive nature and desire is suppressed to some extent. You can go to jail if you step out of line even if justified. I feel like while there's benefits to changing male gender roles they've also made me more docile and afraid of life. I wonder if these can be reconciled.
    Advertising really subconsciously messes with the mind which is why I find the ads you posted interesting.
    I will say that emotional strength in general is more important than physical strength thus the increase in stoic literature.

    evolutionary biology mediated by a techno-cultural feedback loop. Industrialization exploded on an unawares largely primitive creature that simply hasn't had adequate time to adjust, even as more changes continue to rock the whole structure. Meh. Give it 500 years; it will be fine.

    also there is no point for what makes men stronger. their are default by birth itself stronger.. they will naturally have tat tendency to b strong enuf. but teach men to behave well. ofcourse they hav pressure frm soceity.. both needs to b given importance. no matter what gender u r character is what all people see in each. just think broader.

    I don't what u were trying to say... I tel u onething, please dont tease women and don't torture them. remain urself. no one is gona bother on what men do. if people aware on their work half of prob will b fine. all both gender need is food and sheath and affection for fellow person. both gender are diffrnt in many things. but love alone unites. so first cultivate pure affection. basically human mind changed not men alone.. please behave as person of whom u r. no one is gona do anything on anyone... but in case of women she alwys needs to fear for men.
