Creating and/or fixing separation anxiety and crate training

  • Every day I talk to people who struggle with their dogs anxiety. So many every day dog owners create that separation anxiety by all the things they do or don’t do when those puppies are small and cute. You’re not raising a puppy you’re raising a dog and you have to take the proper steps to create a mentally strong adult dog or they will suffer and so will you

    Cracking advice! Our dog is 17 weeks and although he likes his crate ,I’ve been putting off separation training. He’s going to start today👍

    Yes, well said. You are raising a DOG not a puppy. I am blessed not to suffer from the cute factor. When I see a litter I always say "what will you be like once grown ", and if the right pup isn't their I can walk away. Separation anxiety is so avoidable. Great topic Larry. Love is what is best for the dog. It is essential not to coddle the dog.

    This is an excellent video since most trainers say to keep your puppy tethered to you at all times, but this makes total sense and makes me change what I’ve been doing so far with my 12 week husky puppy. Thank you!

    Very important video, especially now that so many people adopted dogs, worked from home, and are now returning to their jobs out of their homes.
    I adopted a 6 year old rescue some years back who had severe separation anxiety. She'd been abandoned so it was easy to understand why. Luckily I worked at home, so I could take my time and start calmly leaving, just for a few seconds at first, then coming back, gradually lengthening the time, and walking it back a little if I had to. I don't crate, so didn't use that as a tool. It took time and patience, but within 6 months she no longer suffered from it.

    I needed to hear this. I have a 5 month old GSD and I've been lucky enough to work from home. He is crate trained but I haven't "needed" to use it in about a month. He goes with me everywhere. He will stay in the car when I go into the grocery store and I can hear him flip out for about a minute and then he's fine. I think now I'm going to just leave him at home in his crate when I go. He's going to need to be crated in the future for sure. Thank you for this reminder.

      Wayyyyy too young to give up the crate

    • @Davidm1056
      @Davidm1056 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have a 5 year old GSD. A suggestion for you is when you return home say nothing to your dog. Go about doing whatever you need to while totally ignoring the dog. Then when you are ready, go silently to the dog. Zero excitement. I accidentally started doing this when my girl was a puppy. She never gets hyper when I return home. Once I say let's go outside she is ready to go. Separation anxiety is a potentially serious problem for GSD. Be wise. Good luck.

    • @suzy7301
      @suzy7301 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lklencho Yeah, it wasn't my intention to give up the crate. It's still there in my bedroom where it's quiet. It's just that I've been home and haven't used it. I live in a small house that used to be a cottage, so my bedroom is quite small and is like a human crate. He still goes to sleep in it during the day because the door stays open.
      I used it this evening to go get some groceries. All was well. I listened outside for a bit and he calmed down in under a minute.

      @suzy7301 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Davidm1056 Yeah, I already did that. I don't even look at him when I open it. I just open and walk away. I don't want a spazzy dog that jumps on me when I get home.

    Needed this video. The new 1 year old female Rottweiler has some separation issues. Can't say she has anxiety. I adopted her from the Humane Society. She latched onto me from day 1. She doesn't try to get out of the XL Kong wire crate.
    The issue I have with her, she whines when I leave her with my Wife and I leave the house. She's destroyed 2 slip leads that I had used to tether her. My Wife doesn't comfort her.. which is a good thing. But, the high pitched yelps get on my Wife's nerves.
    Right now she's crated in the garage. I work in my garage. But, she can't see me. There is a barrier. She's fine. It's only when I leave her with my Wife.
    Something I started doing now is putting her in an outdoor 10x10 kennel or put her in that XL kennel crate when I leave. She might whimper or whine. But, I don't promote that behavior.
    Any suggestions on what my Wife could do? Or do you think kenneling her when I leave is the best solution?
    I have 4 other dogs that don't exhibit that behavior. This is new to me.

    Absolutely agree with every word of this. It’s exactly what I did with my GSD pup, who very easily could have developed SA if i didn’t work him through it patiently. First 7-10 days were rough, but he came through as a strong, confident young man now. Thanks Larry!

    This is what I've been telling my family and friends since I got my gsd pup a week ago.
    "Yeah it's cute now, but these types of behaviours aren't going to be cute or funny when she's 50kgs"
    She's cool and calm in her crate in the dinning room while we are in another room or out of the house. But I didn't think about leaving her crate outside for a bit or the garage and build that up.

    Hey Larry, thank you for this video. I couldn't agree more. It actually made me sad, because a couple of my own dogs suffer from separation anxiety and yes, it is my fault. I am a videographer and started working from home full time about 5 years ago. So I am usually in the same room with all of my dogs most of the day. I wish i would have done what you talked about years ago when I started working from home. Now I am two years divorced (so normally nobody is home except myself) and when I have to leave for a job (which is usually a full day on a weekend), it is definitely a struggle. This past year, I started creating videos with different experimental audio tracks to help them when I have to leave. I just started posting them on TH-cam, in hope of helping others with this problem, which is actually how I came upon your video. Thank you very much for this video and creating awareness and answers for this issue. I love my dogs too and would do anything to help them have the life they deserve. I will definitely be checking out your other videos. Just wanted to say thank you.

    THE MOST IMPORTANT & TIMELY INFO everyone should see
    ⭐️🌟
    Especially right now after the “social distancing” era & for ppl now giving up their “pandemic” puppies to overwhelmed rescues that have returned to work & have this difficult issue.
    My 2 1/2 yo GSD has severe separation anxiety that is so challenging.
    Her’s is due, in part, I believe, because she has epilepsy (mild & mostly controlled) & unfortunately, puppy mill breeding ….
    If she had been my 1st GSD I would not have had another one, I’m pretty sure.
    She’s my 5th one since 1983,
    my second black one.
    This is such an important issue to address.
    Thank you for all you post so we who love our companions can do the best by them & for them.

    2 days after i got my Malinois puppy, i got covid and a very high fever, so he was next to me all day for a week. But he was in a crate next to my bed every night. No screaming. I Remember i went outside the front door for about 1 minute some days, just to make sure he would be ok with me leaving the house🤣🤣🤣 He is 9 months old now, and he is never in a crate.

    Larry I can only agree with you 100% since I am suffering from this issue, and I mean I’m suffering from this issue because of the way separation anxiety in my dog has completely effected my life.
    If I knew then what I know now, I would have done all the things you recommend. Since he was 8 weeks old I’ve been lucky to be able to have him with me 24/7 because I am retired. I now struggle with getting my 5 year old field lab to be anywhere out of my sight, for any period of time, without him having a major anxiety attack. . Mind you this is a very well trained, AKC field trialed upland bird dog, AKC nosework trained, along with high obedience, but when he is separated from me he’s a complete neurotic disaster. I’m working on it.
    All you people with puppies listen to what Larry says in this video. Separation anxiety can have a genetic component, but there is no way to know, so you must train your puppy to be alone. Fixing the issue as an adult is very difficult, and takes months to reverse if not years.

    Larry mentioned the working breeds suffer the most. I see this a lot. They replace their purpose/job with the owner. A dog or person for that matter with no purpose, it usually end badly.

    As you advance with your separation anxiety you could probably have friends and family help by letting them stay with them for short periods and then build up to overnight stays.

    I've been watching your anxiety dog videos all day. I practice separation with my dog, her potty breaks are consistent, she's very active and we play everyday. She was a dump off dog I got at a pound, but she is such a girl scout. She's loving, attentive, loves to learn and train. I cannot break her separation anxiety. I've had her for a year and she's three now, I broke her of her crate aversion (she hated it and broke three lol but I got her though it)and she's totally crate trained. Her crate pooping just keeps getting worse no matter what I do. She is a husky mix, hence why I keep her busy. My fiance won't let me keep her outside for better toughen her up, we live in a small city with very close neighbors and she will get very loud at times. I don't know what else to do, I cannot give up on her but my fiance is going to take her to the pound if I don't fix the crate pooping.

      I heard that if you make the crate smaller (not uncomfortable), they will think twice before pooping where they have to lay down. I partitioned my dog's crate and I'm going to try it out tonight.

    Hi Larry, Thank you for your videos. 2 days ago we adopted 2yo Mastiff X dog from shelter. He seems to have separation anxiety. Is there any other approach that you would recommend?

    I have a 5 month old pit-mix who whines/barks sometimes when I leave the house. She is good 70% of the time for up to 3-4 hours, but sometimes she will throw a 20-30 minute tantrum. I do everything you say and tire her out/leave a kong. She is always 100% fine when I'm home and she is in her crate regardless if I'm in another room etc. Is this an age thing or SA?

    So how can I modify that for a three year old fear, aggressive, completely neurotic dog that has never been crate trained and will definitely bite? I only have the dog because it was being put down and a friend asked me for help. I really thought I could do it. But this dog can’t even handle other dogs barking without completely crumbling emotionally. Unfortunately, I have two shepherds, that obviously bark too much lol

      I mean, my family had "outside dogs" when I was a kid and tbh, I never thought it was good enough. My childhood dog was always wet, cold, and stressed sleeping outside...but my dad insisted that she stay there because she was what I'd call "green broke". She never bit anyone, but she wasn't ever really trained, so she had bad manners especially inside. Dogs certainly need a lot of outside time and benefit so much from being in nature, but I wouldn't keep an "outside dog" myself. I also think horses and other livestock should be kept in barns as much as possible at night, especially when the weather's bad. It's just more humane.
