wow! i just have to say, i have been binging your videos for a week, and these are amazing. i was told by so many people, trainers, websites, that my dog would need a specialist or animal behaviorist and that her behaviors were too extreme, and after watching your videos, i’ve reduced my dogs leash reactivity, separation anxiety, barking, and so much more so fast, it’s really unbelievable. you are awesome, thank you so much for doing all this
me and my pup just moved out of a really unstable environment, and it’s amazing how i’ve been able to just completely adjust my behavior to create a calmer, more well trained and well behaved dog. love it, keep it up
Even if your dog doesn't have separation anxiety, it's good to give them something to work on when you're not there. This I think is just part of owning a dog. My German Shepherd is about 1 year old, and I do this for her not because she has anxiety but just BECAUSE. And I think a lot of dog owners should be able to figure out to do this stuff for thier dog simply by THINKING about it and by having a little empathy for the dog. Owners that don't even think about this, are probably just not putting themselves in their dog's point of view enough. Cuz like, duh, of course the dog might be bored left in the house for hours. But it's incredible to me how many dog owners don't think about that.
Just wondering, is the dog's name Loopy or Lupe? I don't even have a dog, but the TH-cam algorithm suggested your channel and I can't stop watching! I love your no-nonsense yet humane and evidence-based approach to dog training.
Labor Day fun.... Practice loose leash walking.. I am in Puerto Rico to pick up my 4 month old Golden Retriever Puppy. We fly home tomorrow to Florida... my chew toys are in my freezer ... ready for Catalina! I have bully stick and have some PB to smear on a Nylabone for the plane. I know some but I can always learn more. Thank you Joel!
I have a very severe case with my dog worked a bunch yesterday on his suggestion and went out door and waited for that second of silence and returned left Today for first time and gave morrow bone when he was supposed to eat I think that's the trick for my dog. Gone 45 minutes and still working on it. Came to door when I got home but no barking honestly can't remember a time when this happened and his 5 years old. Will freeze his food in bones. Thank you for your great videos you are a awesome trainer not many around you are one of a couple.
Great subject for a video Joel! I’m glad you mentioned the idea of people not even thinking about the fact that their dog needs exercise. I feel like it’s only fair to do EVERYTHING we can to set them up for success before putting them in the crate. I just wanna mention that after filling the Kong with wet food or whatever you decide, take a stick or the end of a wooden spoon or something small enough to fit through the small hole at the top to make sure there’s all of these things a tunnel for airflow once the food is frozen so that a dog licking can’t get their tongue stuck in it. It prevents suction.
This video came at the perfect time! We just added a second dog to our pack. She has separation anxiety. It has rubbed off on our older dog. Now we have two upset pups. Hope this technique will work on two dogs. 🙏 Thank you
I call them #love notes. I've been leaving treats all around the house when I leave for years, so they not only get to hunt, but, have something other than me to fixate on. You know how good you feel when you accidentally find a sweet note from your significant other, and your dopamine levels burst a little, you're like, awwwww, they love me even though they aren't right here beside me, i think doggies feel the same way. And why not give them the same self esteem while we're away. It's not allllll about us, if we love, it's the idea of letting the other entity to know they can do it when you aren't around. And, the hunting for treats, definitely allows them to use their cognitive skills and wears them out. And who doesn't love hide n seek?! Thank you sooooo much for your videos!!!
We have a year and a half old German Shepherd and we do the Frozen Kong when we have to leave, but the problem that we are looking at is that he doesn't do anything with the Kong or the bully sticks. He completely leave the items alone and then just waits by the door. Once we get back home maybe 3 hours later then he starts messing with the Kong and the bully sticks and drinking water.
Same with me - editing to update: it took a week or so, but now our pup has taken to these quite well. The Kongs work better refrigerated than frozen, they don't last as long but she loves them.
Perfect timing, again, Joel ! This video just what I needed tonight. Have appointment tomorrow (can't take pup along this time). GSD-Lab, 8-months old, and, up to now, only been left alone for ten minutes. Am filling and freezing Kongs tonight, and buying more bully sticks early tomorrow. Many thanks. (Of course, I wish I had prepared her for this weeks ago.)
Beef bones are perfect! (Like the marrow bone he mentioned) They crumble instead of break and splinter. Just need to be sure they have plenty of water to wash it down.
Great videos, thank you for sharing the information on the difference between throwing a ball in the backyard vs being on a walk. Mm y most recent puppy started out on a bush walk in the mornings, then home for some chew stuff in the crate whilst I went in and out of the house doing garden things and progressing to errands to town. I agree about the crates, however as I've other dogs who are more efficient at chewing theirs, it meant puppy could take him time working away at his own task. We'd do a leash walk in the evening before dinner as well. I'm an advocate that a dog exercising before a meal is like they are earning it, but mostly I think it's routine. Thanks again for your videos and putting the information out there 🤠
Thank you so much for your very informative videos!!! You explain things so well with details. I can't tell you enough how much this is needed. I watch other people's videos and have to watch them over and over trying to understand what they are doing and how I'm suppose to do it Your videos are not that way. Easily to understand. I'm definitely hooked on them. 😊
Love these videos. My 8 month scottish terrier gets excited when he hears the tune play, then depending on what dog is being used.... He sits right at the TV watching 😍super cite
I just adopted a GSD suddenly last night (After background checks, try out period, and travel) and all I can say, thank gods for you and Prince. Rogue is a year old bitch from an abandonment case and has already has solid basics (sit, recall, eyes up, fantastic on leash and off leash when she slipped from her old collar). She will be spayed asap. Anyways, I know separation anxiety can make or break a dog owner who lives in an apartment; and prevention is key. In fact, since the moment she got here, it’s been positive, consistent reinforcement, being predictable in routine, and feeding her meals as rewards as she’s currently underweight. I know there’s always something to learn, but I know German Shepards aren’t usually a cozy apartment dog. My goal is to eventually give her a job that uses her brain. She’s very skittish right now, but I’ve been doing decompression and desensitization work with her already. No it’s not too fast, I need to take immediate control of her situation and let her understand I’m safe and I’m in charge. Hardest thing for me too is separation anxiety… thank you for giving advice and training to mitigate this common issue!
My clients 7 year old GSD mix jumped out of the second story window this week. He got a concussion, vomited and was bleeding from his mouth. Roper ended up needing surgery on his jaw but is okay now.
Love your channel. I watch your videos every day. Just a heads up. You can make Himalayan dog chews at home very easily. You can easily find the 3 ingredient recipe all over TH-cam.
Very good ideas, but my dog does not eat anything when left alone. I can't even get to the door, he screams his head off, if I only think about leaving! He is a small dog, 1+1/2 years old and behaved like that from the start. I've tried everything, nothing helps. Tried a crate...made it worse. Any ideas? I love your videos and the way you help dogs. @@susan4821 Hi fellow Susan! I thought about a second dog but was warned I might get 2 screaming pups with SA!!! I got a video cam...didn't really need it.......when I think of leaving Teddy starts screaming (he doesn't bark he screams) and doesn't even stop when I sit down again...needs 10-15 mins to calm down. You wrote you didn't leave him? I have to go shopping for groceries. How did you do it? But I'm happy for you and your pups that you got thru it.
Don't get discouraged. You'll find a solution if you're patient and keep refining your understanding and tracking the situation. I'm curious to hear how you react when he screams. You might inadvertently be reinforcing that behavior. Make sure that when this happens you reinforce the calmness when it comes, and not the panic.
@@CamperTeddy I understand your frustration, but I'm confident you just haven't found the right method yet and you can find a way of fixing this issue. It sounds like you have a very specific trigger related to the motorhome. I would just set aside a time to practice this specifically, be more granular, smaller steps, change things up. Maybe you sit him at the door as you walk towards the door and give him a treat. Make him feel comfortable with you walking towards the door somehow. Also, practice leaving him in other spaces and notice the difference and increase the tolerance slowly and daily. Your frustration and anxiety could be sending him the message that there is something to be afraid of. Don't look at him thinking "my dog has a problem", look at him thinking "it's OK, you're going to be OK. We're in this together and we'll find a solution, no matter how long it takes".
The problem with the morning walk before leaving is that he wants more than anything else to come with me. Thats all he wants since I get out of bed. The whining starts when my pants go on. very very difficult to manage. I worked from home for a long time. But real separation anxiety, my dog doesnt care about treats if he notices I'm gone. Sure, I might be able to sneak away, but he'll notice and start barking/howling longing for me. Not even my wife is adequate for him. Hotels always call us about him when we try to leave for a dinner or something. My other dog was fine staying in kennel all day while at work. This fella is insatiable. 6 yr old boxer/lab
My Akita pup doesn't whine when she's in her crate, but when she's in her doghouse she whines. Alternatively when she sees us go from the gate next our home she whines/barks, but when we go inside our home from the backdoor she doesn't. Gonna try these tips out to try to get rid of the whining, thanks for the video!
@@coalbuster I have a client that’s dog won’t eat if she is gone. It will starve for a weekend and be shut down the whole time. It won’t even go for walks.
Does it urinate? I've known two dogs that wouldn't go the whole time their owners were on vacation. If that's the case, it's imperative that the dog be taken to a vet and catheterized. @@nancymesek
The yak cheese sticks were great for teething. Then, at aroud 9mo my pup began swallowing big pieces whole. Then, two days later would vomit up a soft cheese chunk. Be cautious of the cheese sticks. They do not digest unless broken down into tiny bits.
Thanks Joel. We used to just pick up marrow bones from the store and give them to the dog. But I noticed your marrow bone was wrapped. Is it different? I leave the marrow bone outside, kind of gross to have that inside your house. Our dog has zero separation anxiety at our house in San Diego. But when we are at our house in Mexico, she is a nightmare. She has jumped through the screen window. Definitely going to try these techniques. Thanks!
My dog loves Kong toys full of treats as well as a fresh bones which I leave for her before I leave the home quietly and calmly but as soon as I leave her (checking my doggie cam )she leaves her toys or bone. I called a dog behaviourist out who suggested stop throwing a ball for her whilst out on walks as it raises the adrenalin which she claims stays in a dogs system for the whole day. I was also told to close the door of the room she is left in & close the blinds or curtains. She still has sep anx but not quite as bad .
I lost a dog to separation anxiety 25 yrs ago before chips and gps tags, social media and even cell phones. My ex opened the door as I drove away and my dog shot out the door past him and tried to chase me down in my van. We never found him again and we looked EVERYWHERE, put out posters, the works. Someone took him in apparently. We had so many complaints from neighbors with that dog. He would bark literally all day long if both of us were gone. It's a dangerous trait in a dog.
What you do when you get home? Do you take the toy from the dog? Do you give them the chew toys only when you're leaving or they have access to the toys once in a while while you're home? thanks
My puppy, even when I give him treat or toys in the crate and food. Once I walk away he cry’s and stops eating. But I am his 4th home in 4 months. He is only 6 months old. Follows me everywhere.
Can you do a video about how to control a dog that gets too excited when spotting another dog approach? My dog is very well behaved in any other situation but forgets all about his training when he sees other dogs.
Mr Darcy , I had the same problem with my 8 months old and a friend told me about the product PET CORRECTOR by Company of Animals. It works wonderfully !!! I only used 2 times. It is a tiny can of spray that make a loud noise. Just follow the instructions. I bought the Pet Corrector on Amazon.
@@humblebee3018 Wouldn’t a loud unpleasant and unexpected noise when his dog spots another dog just cause negative conditioning to the dog whenever it sees another dog. How would that be helpful? You want your dog to be social with other dogs.
My dog loves the bone, the kong. But, if we leave the house, she won't eat them! She just stands by the door, barking or looking at the door. She did that for an hour! When we come home, she goes and eats them relaxed. She is too stressed when we are gone...
Doesnt the wet food mess up the floor when it gradually thaws in those 40mins? Or is the dog faster than the thawing? I am going to try the tips, but am a bit anxious about leaving thawing food on wood floor.
@@pkundrat I've never done wet food - so I'm unsure on that. I give them the kongs in the kitchen/dining area where it's hard wood flooring that is mopped weekly. Any bits they eat & lick up. I much prefer that then raw meat bones. Those are an outside treat, sometimes we'll put them in the garage (especially during PNW falls & winters!)
But what if I walk around the block and my dog is crying while waiting for me to get back does that mean that I’m technically locked outside of my house?
Raw bone marrow always gave my dog runny poops. Lol. My dog would have anxiety and stay distracted for 20-30mins with treats and then after that my neighbours would always tell me “yup he howled for 5/10mins”. Ppl always knew when I wasn’t home. Lol.
Loved your video, however I have a 4 yr old miniature Aussie who has severe separation anxiety. I can leave him the things mentioned in your video to occupy him, but he finishes them or totally ignores them and cry’s and barks. He has never destroyed anything or attempted escape. Also taking him to the groomer is a nightmare…help 😢.
Hello from the uk A quick question about separation anxiety .I have two dogs an older husky 7yrs and a young very large intact Gsd 2 yrs We,ve had the Gsd since the start of covid and because of lockdowns and a major surgical problem with the Gsd at six months old walks have been pretty much none existent and because of that outdoor training has gone out the window for both.now lockdowns have eased I started getting their training back and was walking the dogs separately to concentrate training on the relevant dog and have noticed that the older husky barks and howls unrelentingly while the Gsd is away from her and was wondering how you would deal with separation anxiety between two dogs any help would be great Love the videos very informative and can’t wait to try out the methods you have shown on your videos
What do we do for dogs who aren't distracted by chews or food? My puppy will happily chew on anything when I'm around but if I leave she'll howl for over an hour, dig, pant. I've tried leaving clothing, correcting/reinforcement from same and different rooms, radio, locking the good things in her crate, exercise, play in/near crate, food/water only in crate, Kong's, licks, yaks, and nothing has worked. I've tried small increments of time and big increments of time. Tried ignoring her and tried teaching her how I want her to be. She excels in every other area of her training except this and I'm at a loss -- I've yet to have a shower without her having a full meltdown.
Work on separation within the house first. ex. Feed her while you go get a shower. If that’s too much still. Maybe feed her while you cook. Or replace the feeding with a kong if your on a tight schedule. Then eventually start doing to a further room until you are as far (within the house) as you can get. Stay here until some time here is built. And then work on short term outside. Like going to check the mail or something. This may take longer. Maybe try it in the crate first when actually leaving the house for small times. Start that in the house too. By crate training in other rooms away from you. When feeding time comes. Feed them in the kennel. Even if you have to start right beside them. It’s just repetition and taking every small victory you can get.
I have a client that rescued a 3 yr old dog a month ago. It was in a sanctuary, with lots of dogs, prior to the adoption. He was doing well for a week but then became so bonded with the owner that it now refuses to leave its crate when she is gone (the gate is open) when her adult son and daughter dog sit. If she leaves and nobody is there, he paces until she returns. The son and daughter are completely on board in helping, but the dog will not even go for a walk unless the owner is with them. It is NOT food motivated in the least. I visited their home to observe and I was able to get him outside, but he became so panicked to go home that I had to return. Anyone have suggestions?
We adopted a small breed dog almost a month ago. She has severe anxiety when we leave and she gets anxious and whiny when my husband leaves the room. She is not treat motivated or food motivated at all. Kong is still sitting where I left it. Out of ideas. Tried it all 😞
Can you make a video for truckers with dogs we are almost with our friend 100%of the time I'm curious what things would be as training goes in a semi truck .
Just got my dog back from pound because she keeps jumping out of the car to find me and wonders around until I come out of wherever I am. This time people picked her up in a matter of minutes and took her straight to the pound. This video came at a good time
Your dog 'Keeps jumping out of the car to find you'? Sound like you are not real concerned about this. Do you want to scoop your dog's bloody carcass off the asphalt one of these times?
You're hilarious. She literally just started doing it a few days ago and I've been working on it with her. She's damn near two and never done it before. So shove off with your BS dude. Go troll elsewhere.
@@javiernava4855 What's the BS? Your dog is routinely jumping out of the car and I am a troll? That's interesting. It doesn't matter if your dog is one day old or ten years old- he shouldn't be able to ascape from your car, your yard or your home. Accidents happen to dog owners but in this you sound like the accident that happened to the dog. Separation anxiety is the least of your dogs worries.
There is nothing routine about it. Your taking what little info you have and making it out like I'm some kind of terrible owner. So yeah you're a troll. Hello! I need help! My dog, who I believe is deep down a sweetheart, is constantly jumping on me when I want to sit and watch tv and barks when I say no. I then have to get up and then it's as if he wants to fight me (stands on his back legs, try to get a hold of me, nips my thigh, barks at me, etc.). I try to calm him down by gently holding his collar, but it seems to piss him off even more! He listens well to every command I taught him, but I cannot stand somewhere and talk to my wife or sit on the couch, because he will start the same behavior over and over again. I don't know what to do, I can't keep this up, I can't live a normal life right now because of that…. Thanks for your time!
Thank you for this great vid that's helped!! Have now tried all of these , our romainian rescue 5 month old gsp loves the kong but finished with this within 10mins, the bully stick 30mins but marrow bone hours! The only thing is when I went to put water bowl near him in crate while chewing bone he snarled and lunged at my face. I wasn't going going take it from him..any advice? Thank you !!
Hey Joel, I'm at a crossroads with my dog Ive managed to keep him distracted with treats and bone marrow, but it only last a couple of hours at best. Onces he's done with it he starts pacing and whining in my back yard then progresses to him digging under the fence and escaping. I can't do a full day at work at the moment without having to collect my dog. What should I do?
The rule of thumb for puppies is no more than 1 hour per month of age. But ultimately, they shouldn't be left in a crate for more than 6 hours. Anything more than that is just cruel. If your pup has to be left alone longer than that, please get someone (or hire a dog sitter) to come let the dog out to potty and play for 20-30 min. Then the dog will be ok to be left for the rest of your day as long as it's not more than 6 hours. Even for an adult dog!
Did all this.. but i cant "catch" him working on something because he cries from the moment i leave untill i get back. Even if its 2,3 hours he doesnt stop
I wonder what would you recommend for a dog who is severe and can't use a crate? We've tried all the medications available. Have been trying your suggestions also.
Thanks for the video! My dog started jumping the fences at daycare to get out, when she was around 6 Months old but she’s fine at home alone for a few hours now. In the beginning she was fine at daycare once a week. Should we try again when older?
I've yet to find a chew toy my 5.5 month old pup doesn't chew up and destroy in a day or two. Black Kong, extreme chewer nylabones, benibone etc not a chance. Luckily he doesn't have separation anxiety , I don't know what I would do.
Mr. Beckman I have a problem with my dogs whenever I leash walk one of my dog if my other dog saw us walking outside the garage he will starts to whine and bark I'm not sure if that's separation anxiety or excitement but he really wants to walk with us. So, I always bring my 2 dogs on leash walk at the same time to lessen the bark and whining. Hope you make a address on this thank!
Would this technique work while you’re outside working in the front yard while your dog is on the backyard? Or at the park? Our Golden whines when the kids are playing & he’s not right beside me
I had a co worker they left their dog at home for the day at work and the little scumbag basically went into shock. They came home and he was flopping around and yelping and screeching, they panicked and rushed him to the vet and ended up having to buy a service dog for their dog.
My 6yo is a bar chewer in a crate or eats things out of it. Excessive drool. Do you think starting kennel training over and the frozen Kong's may help? Do you try to make corrections verbally while they cry, bite, bark (whether via the camera or in person) ?
Hey do u always feed wet food we don’t give any wet food to our 6 month old American bully but we do give her a raw egg and ground meat in her kibble for breakfast dry kibble for lunch then ground meat and kibble with a little fruit at dinner or broccoli ?
Hi Joel, any suggestions for how to make sure your dog doesn't spill wet food drippings from his kong all over the house while you're out? Or drag his slimy marrow bone everywhere? Do you give these chews to dogs in the crate?
I guess having the dog in the crate would contain the mess, but why not try keeping him in the kitchen or 1 room if you prefer not to have the dog in the crate.
I am not sure how to gauge my pup's anxiety. He is 9 weeks old, he is generally fine in his crate at night. We have a soft pen for him during the day in our living room and we've tried the frozen kong, we've tried keeping it accessible and open but as soon as that door closes he attacks the walls, he charges the door. I am nervous about him hurting himself. I am not sure if it is an isolation anxiety or separation since as soon as he knows we aren't in the room is when his attention leaves his chew toys or food and turns into a freak out. He will be come destructive in his pen too, attacking pee and tearing up pee pads and he will even seemingly intentionally pee in his pen on a bed or blankets when he is in there which he doesn't do outside of it. Can't seem to find a tactic that works with him, should I just move the crate between rooms and get rid of the soft pen? I can't take him for walks until he gets his final booster shot, so he stays on my property right now.
How did this go? Was it just a puppy thing or did it continue? I just got a puppy 8 weeks old. Only a few nights in but he freaks out when I walk to the kitchen and I have an open floorplan. Idk if its just a puppy thing and I just need to give him time to settle or if its the start of something. Early but I have not found a treat he's really interested in. Still too weak and small for the big boy chews.
@@hansari8697 it settled down, he still has a bit of anxiety in the crate because when he goes in he associates it with us going out and leaving him alone which he doesn't like but we are working with him by going out longer and longer to help him self soothe there are times he will just throw his bed and blanket around his crate but that's about all
How you fix separation anxiety when you have 4 dogs in a garden? Do i have to put them in individual spaces? They wont share those treats.. they can fight They like to dig in my grass ):
Question my dogs separation is so severe even favorite marrow bone which is loves and will practically flip for he's so stressed when I leave he won't chew at all. He literally stresses and screaming the entire time I'm gone. Left for 2 hours and came home to him so bad couldn't scream or breathe well. He couldn't even pant he even regurgitated. Took him 15 minutes on air vent to be able to drink water. Any suggestions for this severe. He doesn't destroy stuff. Just paces back and forth. He's very chill if I'm around. Thank you for your videos love them and your dog area amazing
@@michelleborchardt199 Sounds good but does not work, if you have absolutley NO BACKUP. I travel in a motorhome, no family, no neighbours no doggie daycare! I've read all the books on SA, tried all the toys, Adaptil , herbs, excercise the LOT! VET wouldn't give medication...too young, too small? What is your advice ?
Regarding dogs that won't touch treats because they associate it with your departure - my dog does that sometimes. I would suggest giving him the treat and allowing him to get started on it while you sit there. Then, after a few minutes, get up and leave *very abruptly and unceremoniously.* The dog will already have the strong smell/taste of the peanut butter or other treat by this time and may be more inclined to return to it when you leave.
You can start teaching him how to stay at a point of reference. Train that throughout the day so he learns how to be away from you while in your home and just keep progressing that going further away and staying longer. You can incorporate going out the gate and back in and treating him. Make it into a fun game and over time it will get better. Think about this. There is a comfort zone where he's ok. You want to find out what the trigger is, where it is, when he starts to feel uncomfortable but is not on full panic mode and work on expanding that window of tolerance. Is your dog starting to get anxious even before you leave the house, like when you pick up your keys? Work on making him ok with that first. Then keep progressing.
@@michelleborchardt199 Hi Michelle and thank you for your suggestions. I live in a motorhome, all year round. Half the time in Spain, the other half mainly Germany, bit in France. First SA specialist was a lady from Switzerland via Zoom. She helped me break down the triggers. Helped! Second SA specialists were two english ladies in Spain. We tried all the "tricks"...stuffed kong, special toy etc etc. For example; 1st day: Gave Teddy kong stuffed with ground beef and wet food, lightly frozen. Took him 3mins till he started screaming. 2nd day: Gave Teddy kong stuffed as before.....He takes it, turns around, drops it, starts screaming! 3rd day: Gave Teddy stuffed kong.....he doesn't take it, starts screaming immediatley. 4th day: I opened the fridge door....Teddy starts screaming knowing I'm getting the kong...... It took me a week of opening the fridge door 20 times a day to get rid of that trigger!!!! The ladies in Spain hissed the white flag, didn't know what to do. 3rd try: Malena DiMartini: 30min complementary zoom call. To book their course you must comply to their terms - ok - NEVER leave you dog alone. Can't do it. Got to shop for groceries once a week!!! I'll try letting Teddy dig into a stuffed marrowbone and then leave half way thru. My dog is the perfect dog for me. He does everthing I want...recall in under 1second, high five, fetches a ball and gives it to me directly in my hand. I can take him anywhere, he behaves perfectly. Doesn't pull, loves people, plays nicely with other dogs.....one perfect pup!!!! If only.........
why does every post say you shouldnt leave legit anything with a dog when you leave. Like every post is saying kong will get stuck, bully stick will get stuck etc. I legit feel like most the post just do that becasue they dont want to promote an issue and obviously there is a chance for it to occur but if the chance is slim to none then why not?
@@CamperTeddy I think it would be good to add in teaching a command to release the object in exchange for a reward (or the object they were previously possessing, if safe). They learn that when they release the object in response to the command, they get something better as a reward (or get the same thing back anyway). Then it becomes an automatic response to release the object and not fuss too much because they've been programmed that they get a good result by listening. Not saying this will solve taking any object away, but it should improve it a lot.
@@permitted_277 It's just a puppy, so that will probably work fine, but sometimes correcting can make them guard more, so I think--based on my current understanding--with an older dog it would be preferable to go through the motions of teaching them the command to release something in an easier context. Then when they know what they're supposed to do it will make more sense when you do correct them for not complying, plus you will have conditioned them to be less possessive through showing them through previous repetitions that they get the object back, get something better instead, etc. What do you think?
I do have a question maybe you'll see this, maybe someone else can help. Can separation anxiety cause a dog to not eat? My dog doesn't eat unless we are in the same room as him. This is new behavior, we just took ownership of him from my gf's parents. He used to eat his food without any issues. Now that he lives with us, he's not eating unless we are in the same room as him. Any suggestions?
@@BDTraining Thanks for the response! We will try that. He's been with us for 3 months now, might just still be getting used to the new environment? We did switch his food to a higher quality food that helps with mobility. We will try a different flavour of it though.
My personal fav for fixing 'separation anxiety' in a dog. Grab the dog firmly by its dog schnozzle. A schnozzle is like the muzzle. If you mash the words schnout (German for snout) and muzzle together, you get schnozzle. Anyway while applying a firm grip of the schnozzle with one hand, with your other hand make your fingers form a classic "OK" shape, except that you want to use your middle finger instead of your index finger. Apply pressure against the pad of your thumb with your middle finger, and then flip your middle finger with firm force against the end of the dog schnozzle...FLAP!!! right on the end of the wet nose. Now, granted, the dog won't like this and will try to get away. That's the whole point, isn't it? Try to keep a firm grasp of the dog's schnozzle and apply another firm flap to the nose with your other hand/finger. Rinse. Repeat. As long as you can keep a hold of your dog. If your dog doesn't escape by the 2nd or 3rd flap to the nose, then you're not making contact hard enough. Anyway, I have used this method with some success to help the dog get over its separation anxiety.
wow! i just have to say, i have been binging your videos for a week, and these are amazing. i was told by so many people, trainers, websites, that my dog would need a specialist or animal behaviorist and that her behaviors were too extreme, and after watching your videos, i’ve reduced my dogs leash reactivity, separation anxiety, barking, and so much more so fast, it’s really unbelievable. you are awesome, thank you so much for doing all this
me and my pup just moved out of a really unstable environment, and it’s amazing how i’ve been able to just completely adjust my behavior to create a calmer, more well trained and well behaved dog. love it, keep it up
That’s so good to hear.
“Look at this thing, it’s the greatest thing ever… it’s disgusting, greatest thing ever” 😆😆
Lmao
My puppy has mild separation anxiety and this video really helped my understand what to do
Great subject for a video Joel!
Thanks for the info ... makes sense!
@@JC-sf2qm Sure, glad you were able to interpret what I was trying to explain. LOL
This video came at the perfect time! We just added a second dog to our pack. She has separation anxiety. It has rubbed off on our older dog. Now we have two upset pups. Hope this technique will work on two dogs. 🙏 Thank you
Interesting. I would have thought it would make it better.
God bless this man. Lots of love from me and my furbaby Luna.
Your frozen kong is a game changer. My 3m Kelpie has been lying happily by the fire all evening getting his chew on. Thank you.
The Kongs work better refrigerated than frozen, they don't last as long but she loves them.
did you lower how much dry dog food they get? or whatever food you feed everyday
Man, watching your training videos are refreshing.
Perfect timing, again, Joel ! This video just what I needed tonight. Have appointment tomorrow (can't take pup along this time). GSD-Lab,
8-months old, and, up to now, only been left alone for ten minutes.
Where do u get them??
@@Mr_SamuelAdam most grocery stores sell them in the meat department. But also you can order them online or check your local pet stores
Thank you, I can’t wait to try this on my anxious Italian greyhound!
Thanks again for your videos and putting the information out there 🤠
Thank you so much for this video Joel. We will apply it with our 9 week old dobie Gage.
Here , before 50 views ! Awesome video advice
Great information.
Thank you so much for your very informative videos!!! You explain things so well with details. I can't tell you enough how much this is needed. I watch other people's videos and have to watch them over and over trying to understand what they are doing and how I'm suppose to do it
Your videos are not that way. Easily to understand. I'm definitely hooked on them. 😊

Great suggestion! We'll done!
Wow, love your training video's! All the advice is very helpfull to people and their dogs. Keep up the good work. Greetings from the Netherlands!
I would love to see how you would work the "place" command in with this, outside of a crate.
Hey Joel, I'm subscribed 👏 to your channel. Your videos are great are the best!

That’s a good idea because they’re crazy expensive
Very good ideas, but my dog does not eat anything when left alone. I can't even get to the door, he screams his head off, if I only think about leaving! He is a small dog, 1+1/2 years old and behaved like that from the start. I've tried everything, nothing helps. Tried a crate...made it worse. Any ideas?
I love your videos and the way you help dogs.

@@CamperTeddy Great. Keep us posted on your progress.
Don't forget to reduce your dog's food. That will help them eat.
My dog won’t eat when left alone even with the nicest treats or stuffed kong.

Yeah that's not how adrenaline works. Infact once it's gone it's common to be tired afterwards.
My dog goes through a 12 inch bully stick in 7 minutes. 😂 Frozen Kongs last up to 20 minutes, at least!
@@humblebee3018 thank you I’ll have a look. 🙂
@@humblebee3018 Wouldn’t a loud unpleasant and unexpected noise when his dog spots another dog just cause negative conditioning to the dog whenever it sees another dog. How would that be helpful? You want your dog to be social with other dogs.

When we come home, she goes and eats them relaxed.
She is too stressed when we are gone...
Great content Joel! I'm finding I need this with the new rescue dog. What type of wet food do you use? Have used kibble wet down & then frozen
Doesnt the wet food mess up the floor when it gradually thaws in those 40mins? Or is the dog faster than the thawing?
I am going to try the tips, but am a bit anxious about leaving thawing food on wood floor.
@@pkundrat Get a section linoleum flooring for the puppy area.
Lol.

Which bone marrow brand is good?
Hey Joel, I'm at a crossroads with my dog Ive managed to keep him distracted with treats and bone marrow, but it only last a couple of hours at best. Onces he's done with it he starts pacing and whining in my back yard then progresses to him digging under the fence and escaping. I can't do a full day at work at the moment without having to collect my dog. What should I do?
Put chicken wire or even cement under your fence to keep him from digging.
Where do you get the marrow bones?
Anyone know names of each item? And brand. Couldn't see all
How long is the longest you’d ever want to leave your dog in a crate? So many conflicting opinions about this so was curious on your thoughts.

My greyhound only eats kibble with mashed veg, fresh chicken or tuna, how would I fill a kong and freeze it?

I never thought of freezing the kong with kibble. Does peanut butter also freeze well in a kong ?
My 6yo is a bar chewer in a crate or eats things out of it. Excessive drool. Do you think starting kennel training over and the frozen Kong's may help? Do you try to make corrections verbally while they cry, bite, bark (whether via the camera or in person) ?
Hey do u always feed wet food we don’t give any wet food to our 6 month old American bully but we do give her a raw egg and ground meat in her kibble for breakfast dry kibble for lunch then ground meat and kibble with a little fruit at dinner or broccoli ?
How do I teach a puppy to not play rough?
Idk why but my dog stop whining when she heard your voice even though she wouldn't stop whining before.🗿
Hi Joel, any suggestions for how to make sure your dog doesn't spill wet food drippings from his kong all over the house while you're out?
They wont share those treats.. they can fight
They like to dig in my grass ):

Hi Michelle and thank you for your suggestions.
@@CamperTeddy What happens when you're at a park and you tell him to stay as you move away?
did this work for anyone?
I wish you could see how my puppy keeps crying with a bully stick in the mouth 😅 she can chew and cry at the same time
why does every post say you shouldnt leave legit anything with a dog when you leave. Like every post is saying kong will get stuck, bully stick will get stuck etc. I legit feel like most the post just do that becasue they dont want to promote an issue and obviously there is a chance for it to occur but if the chance is slim to none then why not?
You must have met my dog..😂🤦♂️
I use a security camera that connects to an app to spy on my dog in real time. It has been a really useful tool.
Everytime I try to take my puppies bully stick away he gets super aggressive and tries to bite me
You need to get ahead of that NOW! before he gets to be an adult
You probably take it away in the wrong way .
You need to correct that dog. Unacceptable behavior.
Those yak sticks last my pup foreeeever
I do have a question maybe you'll see this, maybe someone else can help. Can separation anxiety cause a dog to not eat? My dog doesn't eat unless we are in the same room as him. This is new behavior, we just took ownership of him from my gf's parents. He used to eat his food without any issues. Now that he lives with us, he's not eating unless we are in the same room as him. Any suggestions?
Yes it can. It’s a tough one to fix. Try changing up the food.
@@BDTraining Thanks for the response! We will try that. He's been with us for 3 months now, might just still be getting used to the new environment? We did switch his food to a higher quality food that helps with mobility. We will try a different flavour of it though.
45 min is long lasting……typical male response 😂🤣😂🤣 (I’m joking no one get offended.)
