BMW M340i review: The perfect BMW?

  • Meet the recently revised BMW M340i! So what do you get with this BMW M3 ‘lite’?
    In terms of the design, it’s all relatively standard to the previous M340i and the standard 3 Series. Up front, the changes include an aggressive low bumper, a couple of real vents and a hexagonal grille. There’s an all-new alloy design exclusive to the M340i, and around the back, there’s a new rear bumper, a new (fake) diffuser and a new boot lip spoiler.
    On the inside, it’s also all pretty similar, but the main change is a huge dual screen on the dash to incorporate the infotainment screen and digital dials. You also get sports seats as standard, an updated digital dial display and a new steering wheel. Otherwise, it’s pretty much business as usual!
    Under the bonnet, you’ll find a glorious 3-litre straight-six turbo which can deliver 374hp and 500Nm of torque. Naturally, it comes with BMW’s awesome 4-wheel drive system, and all-in-all it costs £58,000.
    So is it worth it? You know what to do by now… Stick with Mat and see for yourself!

    Mat did the F80 M3 Competition at 4.4 seconds to 60 in the dry, this car 3.8 in the wet and cold, unreal. Far more usable as well and less silly than the G80. The M340 is a seriously underrated car.

    Absolute 10/10! I have a 2020 M340i (which I think looks better inside and out) and it is simply amazing. Fast on the track and really pleasant on the street. It's a real sleeper but that all changes when you step on the gas petal. I tracked this car with stock Bridgestone run flats and no other mods and the brake never faded, tires held up fine, and was able to pass most other cars on track. I have a previous gen (F31) 335d touring, which is unbelievably good with probably THE greatest diesel engine/chassis combo of its time - if not ever. I bought it to keep for 10 years but only had it for 3. I’m already considering trading it in for an M340i touring. I also think it looks better than the M3 - it’s not the nose, but the lack of flare in the rear door to meet the rear wheel-arch. Criminal to sign that off. Did it with the previous gen M3 too but it suits that cars creasey design language better. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

      Just sold mine this week. It was chipped from (measured)375 to 459 bbp and from 500 to 600 nm making it an absolute brilliant autobahn cruiser, especially since I also had the annoying limiter removed. That reminds me of the fact that I recently could not keep up with a VW Golf between Aachen and Cologne with the 340 reaching his limit at 307km/h. Very respectable but still very damaging to my ego in this case..

    I have the touring version and as Matt says, it is an excellent choice. Pretty much all the car you ever need. Can do 50 mpg on a long run being gentle or a sub 4 second 60 mph sprint. Lots of toys, reliable and comfy. Perfect ICE car, even sounds good.

    • @GS-pk9rd
      @GS-pk9rd 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      50mpg and sub 4 to 60? Don't believe that, unless some kind of magic involved!

    • @Danorman777
      @Danorman777 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not both at the same time of course. And the average was 30 something mpg. Just highlighting what they can do if you want speed or economy hence my statement. Cheers

    • @GS-pk9rd
      @GS-pk9rd 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Danorman777 Yes but I'm doubting whether it can even get to 50mpg in any realistic diving situation or journey. I mean, you could maybe reset whilst cruising at 60mph on a flat road to achieve that for a short time? But that's not a useful measure for anyone really.
      I'm pleasantly surprised with the economy considering the power, don't get me wrong, but let's not be hyperbolic!
      Whilst we're at it I'm not sure I've seen a 340i touring go under 4 secs to 60 either, but I could be wrong..

    Hi Matt, The increase in weight of about 50 KG that you mention is due to the addition of a 48V mild hybrid system. This system adds about 10hp to power at lower speeds. Also increases fuel economy by about 1 kilometre per litre. The improved low end output is also due to this system. I think it is an important difference to the pre-facelift for the M340i that you should mention.

More power and it was the only year when the pops, bangs and burbles are off the charts (if you like that sort of thing... I do). Not sure if they added the particulate filter here in North America in 2021... but the awesome sound disappeared that year for some reason. I also prefer iDrive 7 and all my hard buttons. Most importantly I still have the proper shifter which I use WAY more than I ever have before on a paddle shift car. Finally they took away the user lights on the new cars... glad I have them on mine (even though they are sadly dumbed down for North America).
