  • Hi guys! Today, I'm going to talk about how the Babaylan contributed a major influence to the Philippine culture. From the Anitos, Mangkukulam, Aswang, Mananangal, Hilot, Albularyo, etc. Also, how Femininity play an important role in the Philippine Culture and why women and the LGBTQ community are strong in our society.

I wish for a resurgence in pre-colonial Philippine culture (esp. Animism and Shamanism). It’s painful to learn about the damages Western colonialization brought into our islands.

Sir, no need to have grievances about colonization and proliferation of western culture. Even with the erasure of parts of classical Philippine culture, Filipinos created a lot of culture. Filipinos created Jeepney culture, many different foods post colonization, their own beauty pageant mega culture. There is no sense in grieving about something you cannot do anything about. Even the culture that arose recently from Philippine creations can be admired and valued. Looking forward is the only way to progress.

Mudra told me about Babaylan when I was young when she discovered I was gay. I remember when she defended me against homophobic teachers, tambays and even from our extended family members. She's the reason why I'm proud gay now.
Until now, she even asked me, "Bunso may nang-aaway pa ba sayo? Sumbong mo lang sakin ako bahala." My Gosh I'm college student already. She even asked me if I had a boyfriend already.

I'm deeply in love with the Pre-Colonial Filipino culture. Contrary to this, my family which are Hispanists (our family has a very potent Spanish ancestry), says that we were all savages prior to Spanish colonization. And it sickens me whenever they ridicule our rich past, tarnished by these foreign colonizers (my ancestors included).

    • @2557carla

I’m Mexican and I also love pre colonial Filipino culture, and it’s also the same for me. I hate how my family is proud to have a lot of Spanish blood, and since I’m the most morena in my family they call me “indio”. It’s sad that the colonizers made us hate our pre colonial culture, and lose a lot of our beautiful traditions that our ancestors used to do.

Thank you so much for this history lesson. I’m a Filipino cis-woman but my fiancé is trans. She started transitioning last year on my birthday. It’s been a whole experience going through this experience, transitioning with her. I’ve been more intentional in educating myself about the history of trans, gender fluid, non binary people. Because there is so much stigma in these identities but they are some of the most beautiful people in the world. What a treat to be able to recognize the intersections of my identity and hers combine. Thank you for allowing me to gain more understanding in my own culture, as well as equipping me to protect my fiancé. ❤️❤️❤️

This is such an interesting talk. I researched a little bit about gender fluidity in pre-colonial Southeast Asia for my Master's studies. In the Malay sultanate era, there was also a group of feminine men who held power in the courts known as sida-sida. There were not many writings on them but its thought-provoking to see how gender fluidity was much more common before colonial ruling. Thank you for sharing.

I'm from India and I found this so cool!! Though Hinduism has Goddesses, it's pretty patriarchal. Actually there seems to have been a matriarchal culture through out the world at one stage - like the Oracle of Delphi, Korean and Mongolian female shamans, and even in Ireland women who used herbs were burnt by the Catholics as witches. Even some of the Shinto priestesses. Hopefully the Babaylans can make a comeback.

    • @KnzoVortex

Honestly the British did a really bad number on India. In their long colonization of India, they twisted Hinduism as per their use into a divisive and much more messed up seeming religion than it really was and convinced Indians this was what Hinduism is.
The worst example of this is the caste system: it simply did not exist before the British constructed it and imposed it on India. In reality, India had a complex and fluid system of mostly just job-based social organization, This terrible inflexible four caste model is just a perfect example of Britain's technique of "divide and conquer", turn a unified nation against itself, destroy itself.
All this is to say, (and being a 50% Filipino-American whose researched a lot of cultures) I believe Hinduism is the most egalitarian tradition. While most major devas of hinduism are male, there are actually more female devis in total. Feminine and Masculine energies have their roles in hinduism. It's quite complex, but very simplified, one part is that female energies give you the wisdom to be peaceful in the moment, while masculine energies give you the drive/wish to expand, bothways of moving towards the infinite truth. Honestly the effects colonization continue to tell lies to every culture victimized even today, and we all need to figure them out for ourselves.

I've noticed that I've reached an awakening (a few years back) and had Babaylan tendencies to which. At the time I had no idea Babaylans existed nor have I heard of such terms being thrown around by Filipinos.
    Tendencies:
A high connection with metaphysical philosophies, intense mental health knowledge seeking, people coming to me for non physiological advice or mental health healing...and an affinity towards massages despite not having formal training. It wasn't until I kept noticing parallels which made me stumble on the term Babaylan that I've notice I've unknowingly assumed the role of a Babaylan. Even though I have no access to traditional methods and I'm living in north America, filipino roots are filipino roots regardless.
Hope those who are in the same situation as me can relate.

    Everything you said was amazing.
Maybe I am/ supposed to be a Babaylan. Back then, when I was in elementary. I was playing with one of my friends then,(alam nyo naman mga elentary dati mga gusgusin pa) we were hoping in a fence and unfortunately his skin touched a bobwire and we were both scared to be scolded by his parents. So what I did was I grab a leaf from one of my mom's plant, nilawayan ko daliri ko then nilagay sa dahon(i know kadiri, but I was young then and just doing what I think was right. Ginagaya ko lang napapanood ko sa TV) then crumpled the leaf placed in his wound and whisper a prayer. I was afraid then, when his wound was gone after that.
I got interested to know and why or what was it.
Then I discovered coming from Dagohoy blood who is a shaman back then in Bohol in my father side and my grandmother in my mother side was also a famous manghihilot and a kumadrona in Eastern Samar. Also has relatives who are esperetista.
So true it was extremely wierd culture having an small cross and face of Christ while they also have flags with one eye with laces which they hold first and rub thier hands before touching their patient.
Also I was able to hear and see spirits back then, opened and shut connection with spirit. Can easily put curses to other. It was not good and doesn't feel good. Groing up in a Christian culture family.
That Is why I got closer to Christianity with faith and strenght coming from Lord Jesus.
History and present only tells us same message that good spirit and bad spirit exist. (good and evil)

lyn pacificar says this magical side of our heritage has been closeted, and its time we step out, share our practices and show the world what we are capable of. Why is it Reiki become a commonplace form of healing in the West, when it is only a hundred years old ?

Just this month I got sick with a ubo ug sip-on (common cold) my parents immediately brought to the doctor's for a check up, everything went well without a problem i got my prescribed medication, but still sick for some reason. Immediately my mother brought home a manghihilot and after the grueling massage, i was told to been filled to the brim with panuhot or suhot which is also the reason as to why my body felt so sluggish and tired all the time. I genuinely felt relieved with the dispersment of my panuhot.
Panuhot is visayan belief of accumalation of unwanted pressure btw. It's typically believe to be influenced by things such stress both physically and mentally.

Gabriela should rename itself as "Babaylan" and merge with LGBTQ+ group of UP Babaylan since feminism and lgbtqia+ movement have similar aims and purpose. Combined movement means more numbers against patriarchy.
