    Thank you for this video Jessica. I did a research on pre-colonial Philippines in my Legal History subject. Pre-colonial Philippines was indeed really progressive, and if you’re going to look, gender fluidity and queerness were widely accepted. Nasa kultura natin ang Bakla. Thank you for raising awareness of these topics!

    In my experience , Filipino culture and religious practice places a high value on coexistence even with what most Filipinos consider sinful behaviour so long as it does not affect others through criminal acts . The Catholicism in the Philippines is a model of love in many respects compared to the puritanical versions of it that exist in other countries . In an archipelago where there are already so many natural disasters and struggles to overcome , your neighbour is your strength no matter what and you learn to coexist . There is also an interesting intersection between faith and sexuality in the Philippines since it is , in my experience , a mostly western perspective that anyone who is non-heteronormative must stop believing in divine law . In other words , many Filipinos are capable of accepting Church dogma even if their actions go against it . They recognize God remains their Father even if they refuse to obey . This is not something that many westerners are capable of doing in my observation . Most of my "gay" friends here in the Philippines continue to go to church , cross themselves before meal prayer , and pray the rosary for the deliverance of their souls . Filipinos understand what it means to live in the intersection between ideal and reality . They understand that Christ came to save sinners .

      We rather leave the judging to the only one who is able to do so properly. Pinoys belief in God in my opinion goes beyond how the West somewhat "limits" God's capacity to understand to the equivalent level as a human. An all knowing , all powerful being should be able to transcend the human limits and see the merits of each individual how they lived their life. After all life is an "exercise" and each are uniquely to the individual.

    • @counting6
      @counting6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@HyBourn_IwillnotComply In fact , we have to remember that the old woman who was so poor and only gave two cents was the one who went home saved even when rich men all around her gave so much from their treasury . Imagine all of Filipinos who while living a life that is considered "sinful" nonetheless still offer what little adoration and worship they can . They may be the ones who are credited with giving their all in the end considering how difficult that is for others to do .

      THE MILLION-DOLLAR QUESTION:
      Mapupunta ka ba sa Langit kapag ikaw ay namatay? Ikaw ba ay nakapag sinungaling, nakapag nakaw, ginamit ang Ngalan ng Diyos sa walang kabuluhan, tumingin sa babae nang may pagnanasa (na sabi ni Hesus ay isang pangangalunya, Mt. 5:28)? Kung ganoon, ang Diyos ay nakikita ka bilang isang sinungaling, magnanakaw, mapaglapastangan, at mangangalunya sa iyong puso. Apat pa lamang iyan sa Sampung Utos. Kapag ikaw ay namatay nang hindi nagsisisi, ikaw ay mapupunta sa kakilakilabot na lugar na kung tawagin ay Impyerno. Ngunit mayroong MABUTING BALITA. Bagama’t sinuway natin ang Batas ng Diyos, binayaran ni Hesus ang multa sa pamamagitan ng pagkamatay sa krus: “Sapagkat gayon na lamang ang pag-ibig ng Diyos sa sangkatauhan, kaya’t ibinigay Niya ang Kanyang kaisa-isang Anak, upang ang sinumang sumampalataya sa kanya ay hindi mapahamak, kundi magkaroon ng buhay na walang hanggan.” (Jn. 3:16). Pagkatapos, si Hesus ay nabuhay muli at ito ay nasaksihan ng daan-daang mga tao. Tinupad Niya ang lahat ng mga propesiya tungkol sa ipinangakong Tagapagligtas. Kaya naman, ngayong araw, magsisi sa kasalanan at magtiwala kay Hesus, at patatawarin ka ng Diyos at pagkakalooban ka ng buhay na walang hanggan (Ef. 2:8-9). Upang ipakita ang iyong pasasalamat, basahin ang Bibliya araw-araw at sundin ito, sumali sa isang tapat na Kristiyanong simbahan, at magpabautismo.

      Spirit has no material body, hence no gender. God being a spirit has no gender but created opposing energies or polarities as night and day, south and north magnetic poles, positive and negative electrical charges, hot and cold, soft and hard, etc. We living beings inside this material body don't have the right to judge our bothers for what is wrong and right given our limited wisdom and biased views. ONLY God is the ultimate judge which is unbiased judgement. "Judge not (according to human biased standards) and you shall not be judge" as Jesus said.

      “Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”

    Very informative. I found it interesting to learn that Filipino has gender-neutral pronouns when I began to learn the language. I noticed that my Filipina girlfriend, who speaks excellent English, would nonetheless occasionally mix-up he and she! Some non-binary English speakers have introduced they/them for the third person singular, which annoys conservative-minded individuals, but I reflect on the fact that this is a non-issue in Filipino. I'm not sure however that a language which does not use grammatical gender is reflective of a sense of sex equality in that society. Turkish and Persian are other examples, as is Chinese, although I understand this latter has been modified by Western influence.

    Thank you so much for doing your research on homosexuality and gender identity in pre-colonial Philippines and sharing it with your viewers because it's very important for Filipinos to know about our ancestors' very accepting community. It makes me so proud that our ancestors treated women as equals and treated queer people and trans people like any other person. It is a shame that we were forced to forget our ancestors' ideals and values due to colonization and now we're left with bigotry and hatred in their hearts. I wish we could progress and fight back against our colonizers' erasure of our history and remember our roots. It is also worth mentioning that babaylans were able to have marriages or unions with male spouses during that time. That is something I wish we could work towards in the future to bring back to our country.

      Catholicism was only brought to the Philippines by the Romans and it is a heresy, why? because Filipinos worship creatures rather than the creator, that is forbidden, that it is forbidden to make an image similar to anything above, in water, on earth and under the earth. {Deuteronomy 5:7-9, Romans 1:25} And all the people who have died, since the creation of man until now no one has reached heaven, they are under the altar. {Revelation 6:9}

      Well yes, because the Catholic Church teaches that you are not allowed to judge others when you, yourselves, are worthy of judgement. The Catholic Church also teaches of forgiving your brother when God has forgiven you immediately. It might seem different, but if you apply it to this topic, it will make sense. The Catholic Church is all about love. Those other denominations are just a bunch of overly scrupulous men and a bit of cult -ish tendencies and they also choose teachings that they only like. They even alter Bible verses (they changed it subtly that's why you can't know the difference)

    Happy Pride Month! Really appreciate this safe platform, for giving the space to initiate important conversations regarding societal and cultural issues. I think that because the Philippines is mostly Catholic, the church still has a lot of pull when it comes to politics, unfortunately. But it’s great that there are organizations that support the LGBTQI community there. I think that the LGBTQI community will frequently meet a lot of resistance everywhere because of the societal norms that’s been instilled for generations, and also ignorance or a lack of understanding. Humans tend to behave differently towards something they don’t know or understand. I live in LA now, and saw on the news the other day that there were protests against the pride march that was happening locally. It’s sad. Although LA is much more progressive than Manila, this community still faces hate crimes to this day. Anyway, I honestly didn’t know much about the pre-colonial Philippines, so thank you for sharing that.

    I was also like this before 😅 I don't really have an idea of LGBTQAI before, I was raised in a very conservative family here in the Philippines which has been very devoted to religion which is being Catholic, I only got to know about it when I was a 3rd yr highschool student where some of my classmates who are guys wears make up and everything that has similar to girls. I found it weird somehow but already learned to accept it as I see them a fun and loving individuals. I always habg out went them mostly and get often asked if am I an Lgbt member , and I just always reply with "ha?" 🤣 because honestly, I am hanging out with them but yet don't know what they're called. I just saw them as normal people , no label no any so called names , but just all human beings who loves to express on their own ways 🙂

    For all those people who are like "I respect them, but not if they force it on us too", who are you to assume that they are going to force it upon you? They obviously know how it feels because straight people force heterosexuality on them all the time, they wouldn't do such a thing. Grabe kayo magpavictim, it's not even you who's being affected in this situation and all you can think about is yourself. You argue that they're just mentally ill and doing it for attention, but why would anybody willingly get ostracized, discriminated against, risk being a victim of hate crimes and having to persevere being viewed differently from their family? Use your common sense, that doesn't even make sense.
    Secondly, for all the delusional Catholics who believe it is a sin, why would it be a sin when a sin is something you choose to do, you can't choose who you love or that wouldn't be love, there is no difference from homosexuals to heterosexuals, they just love people like everyone else does, they just happen to be the same gender as them, the Lord will not punish someone for loving someone, do you believe that he would?. Additionally, if you're here to argue that the "sexual" part of sexualities is a sin, it's a sin for straight people to act upon their lust as well, there's no difference. So why are you numbering out those who love the same gender when those who love the opposite commit the same sin. Furthermore, most homosexual couples statistically aren't as sexually active as heterosexual couples, so it doesn't even make sense. Even a Pope of the church stated that your hatred towards them is a sin, God doesn't want you to hate people, and there isn't anything said in the 4 gospels about homosexuality, he said that himself and he reads the bible that wasn't translated over 50 times. Do not use your religion as an excuse for your close mindedness, wag nyo idamay yung Diyos.
    Don't even try to argue that "the lord made two genders, they should love each other" because that doesn't even make sense. Just because their are two types of one thing, doesn't mean they should be paired with each other. If they lord made pepperoni and cheese pizza, bawal ba parehas cheese pipiliin mo? Use your brain.
    Just admit you're too uneducated and only see one path because of what you've been taught, and don't want to see the other side of the story. You argue that they demand special treatment when they're just trying to get the same rights as straight couples in the Philippines, just trying to get "married" (not even by the church because it would violate "Matrimony", the sacrament) just legally to be able to have them as their emergency contact, to have joint ownership of lands as a "married couple" and adopt a child with both the names of the parents, just so that their civil status doesn't say "single" when they are clearly so deeply in love with their partner. Or in transgender people's cases, just so that they are comfortable in their own skin, so they aren't labelled as what they are not.
    To add to that, if your argument is that "wala naman yun sa panahon ko eh" precolonial Philippines states otherwise, our culture was so accepting before being colonized, educate yourself, read some books on our history, and if you lived/live in the colonial era of the Philippines, you've probably "never seen" homosexuals and transgender people because of them hiding their true selves, due to the fact that those who did express their sexuality and gender were bullied, discriminated and were thought of it just "being a phase". In fact, you should be proud that our generation is not afraid to express ourselves and tell other people because of so many people in the Philippines not being educated enough on this topic because they've always been taught that "bakla" and "tomboy" or "tibo" (tomboy is literally a style, i don't even know where they got that piece of vocabulary from) was a bad thing, so many people still believe this until now and it's time for the world, our country to modernize because of so many ridiculous stereotypes such as these. It is not just "a phase" or being "sabay sa uso" these people truely know who they are if they choose to express themselves because of all the risks they would face, it is not "basta basta lang", they know and you should respect that. Especially those who have family members or friends who are LGBT don't tell them they don't know yet and that it "could change" and it would be better if they were straight because if they've expressed it, or told you, they are sure. Trust me.
    "It would be better if you were straight" as those who have relations with the people of the community, you should not invalidate their feelings and again forcing heterosexuality upon them because it is literally like wishing unhappiness upon them. The amount of homosexuals and transgender people who still hide what they feel by not saying anything, or forcing themselves to be what they aren't or get a partner of their opposite gender (even when they know they don't like it) because of people they are close with who don't want them to be like that is saddening. Please don't only think of yourself, pano naman yung mga tao na "mahal" nyo?
    They are not trying to get special treatment, they hold pride parades because they want to spread awareness and slowly be accepted as a normality (because they are and society doesn't view it that way due to colonialism), because of people like you who are uneducated, just to get equal rights as straight people as they still haven't received the right to having civil unions with their partners, and don't blame them for wanting that because the government decided to add that to straight people's rights as a citizen, so why can't homosexuals have it? Every person is the same, and should be treated equally.
    I pity uneducated, close minded people, so here's a gift of education for you. Have a good day.

      Funny they use rainbow as their flag and yet it's also a symbol of Gods covenant to all living creatures of earth. America parades around using this colour to mock God. Pride month? Since when pride needs to be celebrated? Isn't that the reason why Lucifer fell from heaven . The reason why there's only two genders because our body is the house of holy spirit and the union of two bodies produce another life. If you have sex with the same gender you're basically mocking the process of creation. Remember God loves everyone but he's not tolerant. I know everyone commit sins that's given but it doesn't mean we should do it even if we know it's wrong. I don't understand why these people who continuously apologizing to God then sleeping around again the next day claims they love God. To love God is to abide to his words. The bible is simple we don't need another definition of words that fits our narratives.

    The difference between our LGBTQ community in the Philippines and the LGBTQ community in the US and Western countries is that they don't impose on anything. I have 4 gay nephews and 1 lesbian niece. They all know their place on our society and have always been loved and well accepted by our people even in pre colonial times. The problem with LGBTQs in the US and the Western countries is that they want to impose their beliefs and values on other people. In the Philippines, even our LGBTQ community knows that you don't demand respect, you earn it just like anyone else. You want to talk equality, then you have to respect the beliefs and values of others first

    There's a lot if pushback happening in the US against the LGBT. Laws are being passed banning homosexuals or transwomen from using female bathrooms and female sports. Also, a lot of parents are questioning teachers in public schools because of teachers promoting LGBT lifestyles!

    This is why I am so grateful with my churchmates/ friends. We’ve been together serving our church for 6 years. I came out to them and they learned to accept who I am. I don’t serve the church anymore and I already moved back to my home city, but we still plan travels together.
    Funny how they are more understanding and compassionate than some of my lgbt friends/acquaintances. The lgbt community in our province are more toxic to their own members than non-lgbt people.
    Truly, religion is not always the issue. It’s the close-mindedness and toxicity that people can have regardless of gender or religion.

    Philippines as a Christian Majority Country,We Filipinos don't Conform to the mental and emotional illness of a certain individual regarding his or her sexuality as a member of LGBTQAI+.
    Being a LGBTQAI+ is not a sin but practicing immoral relationship with the same sex,with animals,with things is against the Law of God.

Ancient Filipinos practices polytheism which is having multiple gods and paganism specially animism that believes in everything has soul, the Anito, encanto, and all other elemental beings in exeption of maligno as they were mostly introduced during Spanish rule

    The LGBTQAI+ rights recognition in Indonesia is somehow complex as in the Aceh province, people can face the death penalty (as adherence to the Sharia law), while in South Sumatra including its city, Palembang can face restrictions. Other places in the country are pretty fine, especially on the non-Muslim areas of the country (Btw, Filipino ako, medyo curious lang sa bansang Indonesia😅)

    in my view, i think the current law applies to all genders and rights, except for men's right for being abused though. that's why its fine with me and respect them. i have a lot of LGBTQ friends and treat them for who they are, and they are fun to be with. Most of them still do have faith in God and that's important to live by to keep everything following the right path and be happy/loved.

    As a g@y man and a Catholic here in the Philippines, let me tell you that LGBTQIA+ folks here are "recognized, not fully accepted but tolerated"
    As growing up, and coming to terms that I'm not like the other boys of my age, dahil siguro para daw akong "babae" or effeminate.. at alam mo niyo ang mga sumunod na pangyayari sa mga ganitong scenario, h0m0phobia🤣🤣🤣
    Kahit dito sa YT, pag nagcocoment ako about sa mga issue related sa LGBTQIA+, there always comments that are not friendly... Right from bible quotes, being called a heretic dahil daw Catholic ako at g@y ako, na masusunog daw ako sa impyerno and so on🤣🤣🤣🤣
    Pero may hope naman ako sa mga future generations na mawawala din yung h0m0ph0bia, kasi as far as sa nakikita ko, mas maraming kabataan ang nagiging mas open na iexpress kung sino sila

    • @rap3208
      @rap3208 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In the US, they are not tolerated so they have laws to force their acceptance/tolerance. In the Philippines, they have been accepted/tolerated since the beginning so no need for laws or Woke movements to force their acceptance. We shouldn't import this from the US as they have a different gay culture and experience as everybody is at war now in the US - gender pronouns, woke activism, trans joining women sports, etc.

    the reason is
    some priests were gays
    brave soldiers sons were gays
    and the old filipino culture to be secretive in their gender identity and easily accepted by most filipino
    and also because of the new generation, filipinos can adopt to it easily because we are in a democratic country we accept anyone being a friendly people
    and also filipino pride
    if you're a lgbtqai++ and you became famous or win in any competitions around the world we filipinos are very proud of you whoever/whatever you are as long as you have a filipino blood we dont care if youre lgbtqai++
    and that's the reasons why lgbtqai++ are not afraid to hide their identity anymore because of their talents being a clown or a great comedian in you circle of friends
