I don't think Shay's statement would've caused negative reaction in the Philippines if she did not do the voice acting for Trese a year or two. That project was a huge deal since it's the first Filipino made anime that was shown on Netflix so the production wanted an all Filipino crew behind it. Her accepting that project but later on denying her Filipino roots made Filipino people think that's she's only Filipino when it is beneficial to her.
Trese wasnt made or animated by filipinos or any Ph based animation studio, it was animated by a studio in california and by another studio in south korea. A lot of filipino animators, and studios were insulted by the blatant false advertising of the animated series. Not to say it isnt filipino, but it wasnt the first filipino anime, my little pony is more filipino than that. no ph studio touched that. Not to take away the artists' achievement but It shouldve been advertised as the first filipino komik adaptation by netflix. Calling it first filipino anime is a huge insult considerimg we have artists and studios based in PH that actually animate scenes for popular anime and netflix animations.

Fil-Ams/Diaspora Filipinos who were pretty much born and raised overseas and are of half-heritage, may already be pretty much Westernized/brought up in a foreign culture, and we full-blooded Filipino natives back here at home may struggle connecting with y'all some times (honestly guys, settle the debate already, we are Asians, not Pacific Islanders although we are very much close to the Pacific Region hahahaha) like there's this big disconnect between us and y'all. But regardless, for some reason, there's always this underlying and unbroken connection between us and y'all. Fil-Ams/Diaspora Filipinos who were pretty much born and raised overseas and are of half-heritage, may already be pretty much Westernized/brought up in a foreign culture, and we full-blooded Filipino natives back here at home may struggle connecting with y'all some times (honestly guys, settle the debate already, we are Asians, not Pacific Islanders although we are very much close to the Pacific Region hahahaha) like there's this big disconnect between us and y'all. But regardless, for some reason, there's always this underlying and unbroken connection between us and y'all. Shared experiences and struggles albeit brought up in a different setting and subjected to different cultures and circumstances is what connects us no matter how much "different" we seem.
