Can you tell me if the back of the desk has a white smooth surface or of it has raw edges? I wanted to buy it but not place it against a wall but only if the back is finished off like the front.

It's the guide rails for the drawer that are fixed to the cabinet. You need to take them off and swap them over. The screws can be accessed without dismantling everything
