I think 3DO Doom is the real bottom of the barrel as it manages to run worse than the Saturn and SNES versions on hardware that should've been able to run the game no problem, and its screwed up development story. Street fighter alpha 3 for ps1 proved optimization can go a very long way…still like it over the arcade, Saturn and psp versions, (barely any animations where cut just short short load times in fact it glitches if you set the loading speed X2 trough the ps2 and vita. I’m finally glad it’s getting released in the Capcom fighting collections 2.
IIRC even the Dreamcast had a flawed port of Garou Mark of the Wolves, but that may have been due to it just being a less than stellar port rather than console limitations.
@@DEKANIEVES The Neo Geo apparently had about as much ram as the Super Nintendo. Apparently why the cartridges were so large is that they were packed with rom chips that could access the data very quickly even it wasn't alot. PS1 had a lot of RAM issues when it came o ports of 2D arcade games an often had the most cut down when games had ports across multiple consoles.

You mention the Street Fighter II PC Port, and as a kid, I would have been perfectly fine with that. I say that as someone who got Mortal Kombat for GameBoy as a gift on Valentine's Day 1994. I was just so happy to have Mortal Kombat. I look back on it now, and think "Wow..... You settled for this?!", but I was 7 years old, just happy to have MK. I have been a Virtua Fighter guy since March 1996, after first playing VF2 (I still remember EXACTLY where I was). VF2 is the single greatest fighting game ever made, followed by VF4 (though VF3 is my personal favorite). January 1997 I bought Virtua Fighter "2" (I say that because it only had the original cast. No Shun or Lion) for my MegaDrive. The first game I ever bought with my own money. That was pretty much exclusively the only game I played at home until I got my N64 for my birthday in October 1997, and my PSX for Christmas 1997. I didn't care it was 2D. I FINALLY had Virtua Fighter at home!!!! And all my practicing on the MegaDrive version led to lots of success in the Arcade. Now just imagine the rush I felt when I finally bought my Sega Saturn on Sunday, August 18, 2000 with VF2 of course. I just couldn't believe I literally, FINALLY had the arcade version of Virtua Fighter 2 in my own home. Where my fellow Sarah players at?! Also, everyone is SO EXCITED for the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom Collection, I'm buying solely for The Punisher as the MegaDrive port is just not worh the asking price.
I would like to point out SSX3 for the GBA. It's my absolute most favourite game on the PS2 but it's horrifically compromised on GBA with a frame rate that'd be faster if EA mailed me each frame by postal service.

My first experience with doom was on the snes. It was in the height of doom fever back in the 90s and I was desperate to play it. I have fond memories of it, but after playing it as it should be, I couldn’t go back to it. However I will say that it’s an amazing achievement that they managed to make it in the first place. Definitely a curiosity for die hard doom fans now, but not really recommendable for first time players
@@MikeDBloke I see where you're coming from, but I will say as bad as the Speccy and C64 versions are, you could never expect a 1:1 port or anywhere close to it (although the C128 port of SSF2 that's currently being homebrewed is unbeliveable work). The DOS/Amiga/Atari ST versions should've and could've been distinctly better than they were and as such I would put them in a different bracket. Personally with the mix of laggy controls, clunky colours and that software scrolling the Atari ST version has to be the most unplayable out there.
SNES Doom has difficulty options and they also limit which episode you can start from. The hidden path for the chainsaw is also there but just doesn't open from being shot at. Edit: you can also circle strafe, you just have to know what you're doing.
It's been ten years since discovered Gman and we're are around the same age. I wanna say my life my have been different if I never discovered Gman. Last year I fell through a ceiling and almost died. Busted ribs, Spleen and collarbone was snapped. When Gman put the Die Hard Trilogy video out, I can't tell u how many times i watched that video when i was trying recovery. It's the only thing that made me laugh at a scary time. I was under the impression that the worst port of Doom was on the 3DO, but then it could be that the majority of people never owned a 3DO, let alone played that version.
14:02 I lived in the middle of nowhere in the atlantic ocean, the country of Iceland, the first time I played this game was at a friend's house, this kid from Tailand had a Playstation from Asia and a copy of Metal Slug, then not so long after a video rental store in my neighborhood got a Metal Slug arcade cabinet. I must've been pretty lucky to have played both versions as a kid, I became a fan and bought Metal Slug X and the rest of the series as I got older.
Thank you for another segment here Gman, I have enjoyed these segments immensely. I had a lot of these games you show, and it's been fun seeing just how bad my gaming choices were when I was younger.
It's a lotta fun, me and my bro ran thru it recently. Nick fury constantly scolding frank for well doing what he do was funny. Especially considering as me actually playing Nick I was just as brutal.
25:33 - Considering the Arcade game The Punisher was rather obscure to find, the Sega home console adaption was the only source of the game there was. And naturally, the 16-bit Sega system could not be the arcade game in any way, but for what it offers it was all we knew. Again, most of us had never played the Arcade game so it was not much to say. The game was non the less doiung what you expected and you had a good game time. But if you had been one of those who had played the Arcade game at the time, I get it. The Punisher arcade game is actually included in the newly released "Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics", so now the game is officaly re-released 👍
Great content, I know this has nothing to do with the subject of this video, if you could put the COD BO 6 campaign on that list of the worst and best campaigns, where would it be? Greetings from Brazil, I love your videos.
The chainsaw section is there in E1M2 of Doom on SNES. You have to use action buttin on the panel you would shoot on every other version. Also the shotgun seems to have unlimited range.
I played Doom on SNES first and absolutely loved it! Felt like an impossible port plus the soundtrack was legendary. Also MK2 on SNES was full blood and miles better than the Megadrive version.
That PS1 hack gave me a good laugh. When I was a wee lad we would have a biro wedged in there. Then you could swap the real disc out with a copy while the original disc was spinning.. Man good memory there thanks for that!
1:40 Wait, what? PC port of RE4 was so bad they basically had to do it again. It's legendary. Just because the graphics were better (well, higher res at least) doesn't mean the game was too. Bad PC ports were very common at the time, especially from Japanese devs who always prioritised cosoles (not the Xbox of course, lol)
I recall the first PC port of RE4 was a shitty ps2 port ported into PC. I think I still have that shitty port for PC as a CD... Separate ways was impossible to complete as the game always crashed.
Great video as always. I don't know what you mean by "there needs to be a remaster for the Punisher arcade game," when a remaster was released a few months ago with Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection Arcade Classics.
I know you said you're tapped out, but these video's are so strangely informative. I hope we can get 1 or 2 more a year that stuff about the Wolf 3D SNES port was totally new info to me!
Fun fact, the SNES version of Wolfenstein 3D was the basis for the Atari Jaguar, Classic MacOS, 3DO and Apple IIGS versions which are known as the Mac family of ports.
Keep in mind, this is DOOM on SNES WITH the Super FX chip, I'd hate to see what it would look like without the chip or god forbid if it was released on the Genesis/Megadrive
Holy shit! I didn't even know that a SNES version of Doom existed. But Metal Slug definitely brings back memories, my brother and I always played MSX on the PS1 and the weapon pickup announcement got us so hard that we did it for years whenever we picked up a gun in other games.
Brothers in Arms is also on the PSP, pretty much has all the bad qualities of the PS2 version plus the terrible controls that comes with only having 1 analogue stick and 2 bumpers/triggers, I’d say it’s much worse
SNES doom holds a special place in my heart for how it got me to spend well time with my dad who I had a really bad relationship with. It was the one way we bonded
Trust me, the well is not dry. There are countless horrific pc ports during the ps1 and ps2 era. Twisted metal 1 and 2, true crime new york city, spider man originally on ps1, etc. Only challenge is finding a way to get your hands on those versions.
I remember that you can beat entire street fighter by only using low punch with Dalshim, it was so lame lmao. But i still remember it fondly, especially the part where you can demolish a car in the port lol
Hey Gman, fellow Aussie here. I had the SNES version of Doom back in the day as a 15 year old, we never had a PC. At the time it was amazing, Doom on Nintendo!! I beat it, which I admit was painful with no save feature. But it was Doom, at home, on a console, brilliant stuff!! Magazine reviews at the time rated it high as well. I have played it again via emulator a few years ago, and also agree with everything you said about it, it's fucking painful. I don't know how I played it back then lol The music was pretty impressive for the time though.
The SNES DooM "port" does have a very nice online multiplayer mode with a proper level select screen. The original developer is working on a new version with circle strafing, fmv cutscenes and better performance. It'll use a new fpga based chip.
I my honesty I feel despite the Vanilla 32X version of Doom having bathroom sounding music, missing the Third Episode, and lacking the big name monsters. It’s overall better than the SNES version.
Other games that fall on this category: - Borderlands 2 on PS Vita - Doom on 3DO - Mega Man Legends on N64 & PC - Bayonetta 1 on PS3 - Mortal Kombat 1 (1992) on SNES - Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter and X-Men vs Street Fighter on PS1
Both doom and wolfenstein for SNES I believe was designed by the same guy, since both games required completely custom engines to run on the SNES. There's some cool documentaries about both ports you can find on youtube, actually pretty fascinating from a technology point of view on how he squeezed those games into the SNES, but obviously gameplay wise he could never get the frame rate high enough to be truly fun as the original games :(
The SNES Wolfenstein is based on the Macintosh Port, hence only front facing enemies. Get your hands on the 3DO or Atari Jaguar port of the Mac version, which are the better way to play the new missions. They're uncut, too. And cheaper secondhand.
Oh man, I had the Street Fighter II PC port when I was a kid. It was on a CD that had Street Fighter II, Mega Man, Mega Man 3, and a game that claims to be Street Fighter 1, but it's anything but lol
Hey Gman, if you ever do another one of these, Spiderman 2 for the PC from 2004 would be a great one to cover. The console versions are of course legendary, very beloved. But the PC port was from another developer entirely. No free web swinging, no combos, height limit, no actually open world (small somewhat open levels instead), no special moves or combos, very short, hardly follows the movie. It's basically "press left mouse button to win" and it's deeply disappointing. It was crushing as a child to have seen all my friends play the amazing console Spiderman 2, and then get my hands on the PC port, ready to join them, and then get served a different far worse game that was nothing like what I wanted. It's rough. At least it's short. And for some reason, even though it's a dog shit terrible game, you probably won't have any issues running it, it seems to just still work on modern systems without any tinkering, which is even more baffling. But yeah, fuck that game!
Brothers in Arms - absolutely disagree. The lighting in PC version is atrociously flat like many DirectX 8-10 era games. PS2 version has much more natural shading which was one of its major strengths and people don't understand how demanding high lighting quality is on performance. Environmental shadows, shading volumes, shadows on tree foliage especially seen at 4:13. Lighting has always been really hard to nail and even up until today, there are still improvements to be made to achieve fully photorealistic lighting. Not just that but way more VFX like smoke, which is outright missing on PC, clearly seen in the 2:55 comparison.
@@AltimeterAlligator It is not texture baking. I tested this on PCSX2 and if you use lower quality Blending Accuracy options, the lighting quality will decrease. It is basically post-processing in this instance which is super demanding on hardware, I used to play these games on PC and the lighting is horrible via DirectX 9. It is much more layered on PS2 as opposed to the ugly, overbright, flat look on PC where it looks like no lighting is applied at all. This was the case with many PS2 to PC ports like The Matrix: Path of Neo, GTA: San Andreas, DMC3 Squaresoft port, Resident Evil 4 port, Prince of Persia trilogy ports, etc. PS2 can deliver super high quality lighting due to insane VRAM speeds of 48 GB/s via eDRAM. This is also evidenced by games like Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Silent Hill 2-4 and others.
Gman, the only Aussie the world can count on. I recently picked up Brothers in Arms on my Series X for $3.99 on sale. Absolutely worth it and playing with the native 5.1 DD legacy soundtrack upmixed to either Auro-3D or using the DSU it sounds phenomenal
Ironically, the imagery replacement in Doom II in recent versions was done specifically for Germany. That Imagery isnt legally considered a problem in videogames anymore in Germany since 2017. Tl;dr is Germany considers anything that isnt Art with those symbols „glorification“ of that ideology. Movies were considered art, Videogames weren’t. German Laws were rewritten to deem Videogames as art in 2017.

God all I could think of when you brought up the Street Fighter port was how DarkSydePhil beat some dude on the 3DO or NeoGeo port of the game and then wouldn’t shut up about it. Imagine trying to play THAT version of the game at EVO.
The 3DO port is practically an arcade perfect port. It was the PS1 port.
@@theunbearablejuan I agree Super Street Fighter 2 X on 3DO is fantastic, one of the best games on the system. There was no port to Neo Geo.
The 3DO port is excellent and why would SF2 be on the rival company's platform? He obviously played it on PS1.
@@initial_kd Was it that one? So the dude who was complaining about Phil had no idea what he was talking about?
No, no, the 3DO was the best version. He played on the PS1.
Metal Slug is one of my favourite games of all time. I used to play it on bootleg arcades back in the day but that pirate PSX port was the best thing to me.
Played In The Hunt ? I love it but It can be a bit tricky at times like the damn sea mine maze
Gman we need a review of all the metal slug games, they’re such a slept on classic
8:44 the secret is still there, but now you interact with the wall instead of shooting it
gues they didn't manage to incorporte shootable walls in this port
"iddqdidkfa" has been my wifi password for over a decade
Bit of an error in this to be fair regarding SNES Doom 9:00 the chainsaw secret area is still there it’s just you don’t shoot the door open, you open it like any other door with the action button 🙂👍
Also, everyone is SO EXCITED for the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom Collection, I'm buying solely for The Punisher as the MegaDrive port is just not worh the asking price.
ss2t on pc was basically an arcade port
It's a shame most console Doom ports were cock-blocked by Carmack with his "it has to run on CPU exclusively" BS
I would like to point out SSX3 for the GBA. It's my absolute most favourite game on the PS2 but it's horrifically compromised on GBA with a frame rate that'd be faster if EA mailed me each frame by postal service.

Shiggy diggy
I remember in Jan 2012 when my friend (actually not really a friend, he was an argie) said
>tfw you will never post constanza.jpg in 2011 again
I felt feels but they're nothing like the feels I'm currently feeling. Thanks gman!
Big props for Snatch reference 13:31
My first experience with doom was on the snes. It was in the height of doom fever back in the 90s and I was desperate to play it.
I have fond memories of it, but after playing it as it should be, I couldn’t go back to it.
However I will say that it’s an amazing achievement that they managed to make it in the first place. Definitely a curiosity for die hard doom fans now, but not really recommendable for first time players
The Punisher (Genesis/Mega Drive) is the game I suggested in previous "Worst Ways to Play"! Thanks for covering it Mr. Gman!
For Metal Slug, it has a Java version, its terrible, for SF2, it has a Spectrum port (Also Amiga)
And the C64 version... as Dominik Diamond would've said: absolute pants!
@@roboyle As more of a Spectrum fan I can honestly say, its the worst version, US Gold man, they just did such things
Personally with the mix of laggy controls, clunky colours and that software scrolling the Atari ST version has to be the most unplayable out there.
that meme about black ops in the beginning was so relatable
You forgot the most important one
Lego Star Wars 2 on the DS
Every game is a nostalgic gem for me and he truly is a master of his craft with these games and the ways he presents them to us with a solid sense of humor :) From Shadow Warrior to Moon Man to Cross Console games, here's to another ten years :)
OH URBAN CHAOS needs a review ;)
I still love playing Metal Slug Anthology on my PS2. I know it ain't the bedt version, but it's still so much fun!
I never had any issues with it...always ran fine for me. Outside of the arcade I'm unaware of any better version.
I was under the impression that the worst port of Doom was on the 3DO, but then it could be that the majority of people never owned a 3DO, let alone played that version.
Our stoned food destination Mister V had a rotation of Neo Geo cabinets so MANY Metal Slug games. Puzzle Bobble, King of Fighters and Nam 1975 too.
I had a lot of these games you show, and it's been fun seeing just how bad my gaming choices were when I was younger.
i hope that the punisher on the new capcom fighting collection will be good
It's a lotta fun, me and my bro ran thru it recently. Nick fury constantly scolding frank for well doing what he do was funny. Especially considering as me actually playing Nick I was just as brutal.
It's great, kinda lost gem
Hell yeah! Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels clip, as well as The Departed and The Wedding Singer! Excellent!
How the hell did I never know they ported the Punisher to the Genesis?????
Because it's hard to find and expensive.
4:43 the way you find relevant movie clips that represent the way everyone feels about these games never ceases to amaze me lmao
That SNES port of Doom...Oof! That frame-rate and the controls, and the lack of save-function makes it quite the task to beat in one go.
@19:25 the commodore 64 version is even worse than the PC version. Yes it exists, it was even on an AVGN episode.
Currently playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance on Nintendo Switch.
I love impossible ports and always will
Great content, I know this has nothing to do with the subject of this video, if you could put the COD BO 6 campaign on that list of the worst and best campaigns, where would it be? Greetings from Brazil, I love your videos.
“What is this, Penrith?”
😂 as a fellow Aussie, i know this rings true 😂
I assumed you were going to play the Wii port of Brothers In Arms. Me and 7 other people in the world played it as a kid and enjoyed it. 😂
Yeah I remember the one I used was a little spring thing attached to plastic.
You wanna look at the C64 and ZX Spectrum ports of Street Fighter 2. They make the DOS Version look Arcade Perfect!
I know I haven't played PS2 games in a long time, but I don't recall Brothers in Arms performing THAT horribly there.
Dang, thanks for covering Brothers in Arms.
Road to Hill 30, Earned in Blood and Hell's Highway are some of the best FPS.
1:40 Wait, what? PC port of RE4 was so bad they basically had to do it again. It's legendary. Just because the graphics were better (well, higher res at least) doesn't mean the game was too. Bad PC ports were very common at the time, especially from Japanese devs who always prioritised cosoles (not the Xbox of course, lol)
all capcom ports made by ubisoft were bad - RE4 , DMC 3 and onimusha 3 . horible , games itself are great
I recall the first PC port of RE4 was a shitty ps2 port ported into PC.
I think I still have that shitty port for PC as a CD...
Separate ways was impossible to complete as the game always crashed.
Funny, cause I feel like japanese devs actually do the best PC ports at this present moment in time.
oi, hold on, where's the "SHWACKED" at 3:36? i feel scammed.
Doom SNES is a prime example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should"
Excellent work GmanLives, your work helps me relax after a hard day in customer service. Thanks! =)
In all honesty Gman, I watch this to see what older games I can try out. So far the best selection comes from these videos xD
Great video as always. I don't know what you mean by "there needs to be a remaster for the Punisher arcade game," when a remaster was released a few months ago with Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection Arcade Classics.
I loved doom on SNES. At the time I had no other way of playing it and as an 8 year old, it was mind blowing
I have been a long-time enjoyer of this channel, but as a Penrith lad born and bred, that comment cut me to my core.
Subbed strictly for the Blazing Saddles reference. God tier use 😂😂😂
I have loved your retrospect on these worst ways series 👍🏻👍🏻
If your nearly tapped - why not do a best way series??
SNES doom holds a special place in my heart for how it got me to spend well time with my dad who I had a really bad relationship with. It was the one way we bonded
"Got the Gist?"
"Oh I think so Sir, GmanLives when it Sizzles!"
Trust me, the well is not dry. There are countless horrific pc ports during the ps1 and ps2 era. Twisted metal 1 and 2, true crime new york city, spider man originally on ps1, etc. Only challenge is finding a way to get your hands on those versions.
Great video!! You have great taste
I don't know how I played it back then lol
The music was pretty impressive for the time though.
The SNES DooM "port" does have a very nice online multiplayer mode with a proper level select screen. The original developer is working on a new version with circle strafing, fmv cutscenes and better performance. It'll use a new fpga based chip.
Nice vid man!
What was that gadget at 10:14 you talked about? Couldn't figure it out by the image alone
So that's where Sega got the moon jump on VF from. They played the DOS version of SF2. Makes a lot more sense now.
TMNT Tournament Fighter had a version for NES . I'd rather be drug backwards through a cornfield naked than play this version of the game.
I my honesty I feel despite the Vanilla 32X version of Doom having bathroom sounding music, missing the Third Episode, and lacking the big name monsters. It’s overall better than the SNES version.
Other games that fall on this category:
- Borderlands 2 on PS Vita
- Doom on 3DO
- Mega Man Legends on N64 & PC
- Bayonetta 1 on PS3
- Mortal Kombat 1 (1992) on SNES
- Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter and X-Men vs Street Fighter on PS1
Doom on the SNES was the first one I completed
I'm so fucking glad people are finally waking up to the fact that Violin Doom on the SNES is incredibly, incredibly sloppy.
The penrith jab got me 😂. Street fighter penrith is just watching fights at the station from the Red cow.
Oh man, I had the Street Fighter II PC port when I was a kid. It was on a CD that had Street Fighter II, Mega Man, Mega Man 3, and a game that claims to be Street Fighter 1, but it's anything but lol
The worst way to play DOOM is on a pacemaker. And i was baffled about the missing frames with the MS-DOS Version of Street Fighter 2.
The lighting looks like baked textures. I think Ubisoft Shanghai just handed over an unoptimized build.
bro you’re tripping
This is also evidenced by games like Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Silent Hill 2-4 and others.
brothers in arms d day was kinda a mix of road to hill 30 and earned in blood on the psp...that was definitely worse than the ps2 version
There are two. GmanLives and Nat's What I Reckon.
10:35 I was waiting for a reverb fart but this killed me🤣
Oh man, major memory jolt, I remember finishing Doom on the SNES. Great times.
