    Great to see you in front of the camera at last! Thanks for the shout out and nice to see my mug next to your mug🤣. Mill is looking good, love the detailed rebuild. Catch you soon, Ade

      Thanks Ade, I wasn't sure whether to put my mug on TH-cam, people have enough problems already! Your mug is a different matter, thanks very much for sending it.
      The mill was pretty rough, par for the course with these imports but with a bit of fettling I think it will do me just fine.
      Best wishes, Dean.

    Well Hello Dean!!! Its nice to put a face to the voice, another great video, you are really going to enjoy that milling machine. Converting to 3 phase is awesome too, you will really be happy with the operation of it. As you remember I converted my lathe to 3 phase and wish I had done it 25 years ago. Nice going Dean and congrats on 113 subs.

      Thank you Dale, I thought it about time I appeared. I'm looking forward to getting the mill running on 3 phase, I will be fitting a DRO too eventually. It should be a very useable machine.
      Best wishes, Dean.

    Hi Dean. You are doing a really nice job on the VCM. Been looking forward to watch what you were going to do with the machine. Very impressive 👏 👌
    Cheers Neil

      Thanks Neil, it's almost done. I didn't want to cover the rebuild in detail, plenty of videos already out there.
      Dean.

    Mill is looking awesome Dean! I need to find a mill for my shop. I have four lathes so a mill would be a great addition. After I get my house finished, I will begin looking for one. Thanks for sharing!

      That's an impressive tally of lathes Danny! A mill is definitely a good addition. I was using the attachment on my lathe but it just hasn't the capacity for many jobs. Best wishes, Dean.

      @@retromechanicalengineer Yes sir, I was thinking about getting an attachment for one of mine but like you said, they are very limiting. When I started looking for a lathe for some reason I decided I wanted a LeBlond. Found a 13 x 72 in pretty decent shape for a good deal, bought it. A 13 x 36 popped up on Craigslist a few weeks later and it was a much better machine for a steal so I couldn't pass up a bargain! The I was perusing a forum thinking about gathering information on rebuilding the first one and a guy close to me wanted to practically give a 17 x 120 LeBlond away. I figured I was into LeBlonds that deep, how could I go wrong. The 17 was in perfect shape except it had been knocked over and broke the taper attachment off. Sorry for the long dissertation...

    Another great vid! That's a beautiful mill, perfect size for the home shop. I've had similar results with evaporust turning parts black. I've noticed that parts with traces of oil/grease come out blacker. I'm not sure if that's actually the cause but something I've noticed. I also used evaporust on the maximat 7 ways when I first brought it home. They were covered in 20+ years of rust and I thought it would be the quickest method to clean them. Turns out leaving evaporust soaked paper towels wrapped in saran wrap on the ways will not only remove the rust, but also permanently etch the ways as well. I can't figure the stuff out either

      Hey Roddy, always good to hear from you. Thanks very much for the comment.
      Evaporust is strange stuff. I think the carbon content of the steel dictates the blacking to some extent, the pickling process causes the carbon to leech. It seems the better the quality, the more likely it is to turn black. Hence the etching of your lathe ways. It also strips chemical black from parts and fasteners. Still, it has done a reasonable job on the mill.
      Best wishes, Dean.

    That was brilliant, really enjoyed it. Congratulations on 100+ subscribers. I can only dream of such dizzy heights. By the way, there is some bloke with a youtube workshop channel who looks just like you...slightly better looking though.
    Great work with the mill. I agree with Jon, the knee handle seems a bit wonky. I was very taken aback by Cliff's fire too. I am fitting interlinked alarms and I am definitely going to look at fire suppression.
    Spot on for giving Ade of AG Engineering a mention. He is fantastic.
    Looking forward to your next film.

      Thanks Carl. I'll look out for this bloke who's better looking than me, I didn't know it was possible. I think the fire safety piece is sensible for all of us, it's just a terrible shame that Cliff had to suffer the fire for us to think about it.
      I'm going to check the mill handle and shaft. To be honest, hardly anything is drilled on centre. Not good, not terrible. We'll see!

      @@retromechanicalengineer I agree, Cliff's fire was a shame. Always careful about what I store in my workshop. I have a rule, which is no fuel gasses, no matter how small the container.
      Looking forward to seeing your milling machine take its first cuts.

    Hi Dean, nice to put a face to the voice, well done getting in front of the camera, not easy at all and I remember well when I first bit the bullet. You are a natural, very relaxed and listenable. You are making a cracking job of the mill refurb! Not sure, but is the knee raising shaft bent, or is it just a crappy casting on the handle? Hard to see on the video. Poor old Cliff, I am gutted for him! I like you am assessing my own arrangements for protection as a result, especially being as I have heating and dehumidifier running almost 24/7 at the moment. Scary stuff. If you go down the dry power route, please let us all know which brand and any fitting considerations, I think this would be incredibly valuable information. Cheers, Jon

    • @retromechanicalengineer
      @retromechanicalengineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jon, very much appreciated. Not sure on the knee handle, I'll have to check that. The casting quality on this machine is particularly poor and anything that has been turned is very rough. It was upsetting to see what happened to Cliff, he's a really nice bloke and his videos were really interesting. Hopefully he will bounce back.
      I will definitely show any fire protection stuff I decide on.
      Best wishes, Dean.

      @@retromechanicalengineer Thanks Dean, you had said enough to get me searching, 6kg dry powder kit on order. I also need to upgrade the house smoke alarms to comply with new Scottish regulations, therefore I have ordered an extra heat alarm for the workshop that will be interlinked to the house ones (which I have also just ordered). I will film the fit, and call out Cliff, hopefully it will give a few others a nudge as you have done, and get the poor guy some more support. Cheers, Jon

    Did you do a video of the knee revamp?

    • @retromechanicalengineer
      @retromechanicalengineer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, I only have the video already posted on the mill refurb. The knee was pretty straightforward though, and not nearly as heavy as I expected. One thing to watch is that the pinion is refitted the right way round. You'll know if it isn't because the action feels horrible.
      Best wishes, Dean.
