Love how you preserve history instead of trying to make it brand new

I got you but I'm more of the other way, looks over originality.

This Is a proper conservation unlike those who just remove all original details and just give it new everything until its basically a new helmet. This helmet looks great. The only thing I would say which I know would take a lot more time only for a small detail, but trying to preserve what is left of the lining and trying to reinstall it would have been amazing. Other than that very impressive work especially on managing to preserve original paint.

Well i wouldnt repaint this either, even a little speck of original paint makes the helmets price skyrocket and these are already expensive enough

Hello from Russia, the city of Eagle , I also like to search for this kind of things of the 2nd World War in my area , and then bring them into a good look if the condition allows , I also collect 7.92 casings by manufacturers of factories , I want to say a great job ! You have preserved the old oskras and even preserved it, definitely like it, I love military history and therefore it was always important for me not to translate into a new look, but to clean up to the extent as in the video to preserve the old color of those things is worth a lot, I am delighted to finally find a normal restorer who respects history and treats she is in awe, I haven't seen this yet, everyone usually tries to make absolutely new things out of these things, but it can't be because they belong in a museum and they are more than 80 years old! It is especially upsetting when the preserved factory color is removed by some regular restovrator who wants these things to shine and shine

Very interesting restauration video--thanks from Germany ! I would use saftety goggles when working with chemicals like citric-or oxalic acid. --------My uncle converted these helmets as POW in Russia by forging to cooking pots and vegetable pass-throughs....
The steel was, I think, foodstuff-proof.......In musea with after war items these kitchen tools are still to be seen, even with real enameling.

Great job 👍. The helmet was very rusty, I could not even imagine that so much paint could be hidden under this layer of rust. From now on, I will carefully clean all my relics, so as not to miss anything interesting.

Rust growth cannot be stopped. This process can only be slowed down. There is no access of oxygen under the wax layer and the corrosion process is greatly slowed down. In a dry room, this helmet can be stored for years and will not rust.

Restoring my first helmet, has damage on the rim (bits rusted off where it is folded over). How would I go about fixing this? I thought about using clay and sculpting the folded part back but it doesn't seem like the right thing to do with it.

I wish you would come to the Philippines. On the final push in Bataan, the Japanese brought in a line of bulldozers and simply buried the first line of American defenders alive. There has been no legal, official effort to excavate or explore the area where the trenches were to recover bodies or relics.

To remove the rust wouldnt it be also appropriate , before any other technique to apply electolisys, and after all the other means you used. The hammer .... ? just a note, not in anyway a critical statement.

That helmet is still rusting and that preservation will not hold for a very long time. I know people consider it an offense to thoroughly restore an helmet or sometimes people say the opposite as Stahlhelm are pretty common so you can do whatever you want with them. I do think there is a way to restore properly it without spoiling its personnal history, some sort of ideal middle ground.
I think a better derusting process to completely remove the corrosion, removing the original painting followed by a bluing and a new paint would be ideal, you wouldn't let a bayonet half restored like that and I think helmets shouldn't be half restored as well.
The pits and bangs would still be there, you would still be able to tell it's an original WW2 helmet and it would be nicely preserved for another century.
I didn't like that video to be honest. But it's not my helmet and you obviously do what you want with your relics.
