Steel is refined iron....not chemically different to a significant extent. In the process of cleaning a steel strip, it is first pickled in acid (Hydrochloric or Sulfuric) then cleaned with alternating polarity. Example :Cathodic, Anotic, Cathodic, Anodic, Cathodic in a mostly Baking Powder bath (Sodium Carbonate). This has the combined effect neutralizing the pickling acid and providing ionization that conducts the electrical current.
Approximately the same result will be after processing with an iron brush, using an angle grinder for five minutes. The only difference is that the tool will be more shiny, and the charger will remain intact.
This method does not require any efforts from my part, but iron brush does. The rust on this wrench is quite deep and old, so you would need quite some time and efforts to get rid of it. So, electrolysis method is better, for this particular task, as for me
Some suggestions: More safety surrounding your electrical equipment Attach a metal rod on your cathode side and resist submerging the wire so you can reuse the charger's wire. State the advantage of electrolysis. One of them being that it blues the metal and thus mitigates rust from forming as easily. This does not happen with a vinegar bath or power tool rust removal methods.

No safety cautions explaining the voltage of the step down transformer, some poor goose with minimal understanding will plug straight into the power source and end up getting fried, you have an obligation to put maximum emphasis on safety around electricity.

You need to use a power supply that is not designed as a battery charger. Chargers usually require battery to be hooked up to provide current, otherwise it won't work. A power supply instead is a much better option - 12v, 5A approximately should do the trick. Another thing to mention is a phenomenon known as Hydrogen Embrittlement. This is false. Baking soda and vinegar react with each other, and neutralizes one another. Vinegar itself will be fine enough as a weak acid to remove rust, though it will etch away at your metal that you want to keep.
Or, just use a wire brush, then wipe with a film of light oil and buff. Much faster. also, use the correct metals if you use electrolysis... works better.

-- Coca-Cola is for shite when it comes to rust removal. You're far better off using vinegar if you're going to go down that road. However, electrolysis is superior in speed and cost. The author of the video was definitely on the right track. Best wishes! - Max Giganteum
Yes, using vinegar and lemon acid can be used to remove rust, this is one of the methods. I used this method to remove rust in one of my other video. Thanks for your input!
You are reducing the iron oxide (rust) to iron--- electrons are coming from the negative cathode - in the iron oxide electrons from the iron are grabed by oxygen making the oxygen ion negative and the iron ion positive .Negative bodies attract positive bodies ; so, the iron oxide molecule is formed . The electrons supplied by the electrolysis prosses are grabed by the oxygen ion in the iron oxide molecule letting the iron ion to get it electrons back and become an iron atom again. The oxygen ions then are converted to O2.This means that oxygen should be released.
VERY dangerous to use salt as the electrolyte, it can EASILY produce chlorine gas! Use sodium carbonate instead! MUCH safer, but remember that hydrogen is released, so perform the process in a well ventilated area or preferably outdoors.

@YouCanTelevision
Just throw it in Coca cola same result
I would rather drink it with scotch)
-- Coca-Cola is for shite when it comes to rust removal. You're far better off using vinegar if you're going to go down that road. However, electrolysis is superior in speed and cost. The author of the video was definitely on the right track. Best wishes!

Cool!
Thanks a lot! ❤️❤️❤️
You can get better results from using vinegar and salt and leave it overnight. Just so you know, that's not a sponge, it's a scouring pad.
Thank you for such a detailed scientific clarification!!!
Sandblasting Will do magic in far less time.
Yes, I agree with you!
If you just happen to have a sand blaster.
The wrench probably works one size bigger now 😅❤
🤣🤣🤣
VERY dangerous to use salt as the electrolyte, it can EASILY produce chlorine gas!
Use sodium carbonate instead! MUCH safer, but remember that hydrogen is released, so perform the process in a well ventilated area or preferably outdoors.
Thank you so much for your input!
Cool video, but looks more job with electricity copper wire. Eventually, I think the salt & vinegar method is the best rust removal.
Yes, every method has its pro and contras
👍👍👍.Thank you
You are welcome, my friend! Thanks for watching!
I just done that with my welder.
I use my battery charger but this is a great idea.
Thanks for your commenting! Yes, this time everyone has an old unnecessary laptop and its adapter can be of service still
just soak it in vinegar for 48 hours
Yes, this may also work. My method is just an option
Vinegar is more for light rust with no pitting. This is for a full deep clean, removes everything ad Vinegar wouldn't or would take so long it would eat the good metal before just rust
Thank you for your input!
In the video captions, you didn't specify the round object. I saw the captions for water and salt, as well as the old computer power cable, but you didn't put anything for the round object. It appears to be a magnet.
Hello! thank you for watching my videos so attentively! The round object is just a piece of iron, not a magnet. This is a part of my dumbbell
I go in the next
hardware store
and take an *NEW*
Wrench instead of risking my life! ❤
Oxalic acid solution or even cleaning vinegar gives the same result. Just not quite as quickly.
Yes, I have a video on the channel showing how I remove rust from the same wrench with the help of vinegar and soda
interesting technique however I think I would just go buy a new set myself... you know, immediate satisfaction of needs.........
Yes, I understand. Your way of solving such problems is good for the modern economy. Thank you for commenting my video!
what is in the positive wire it is a magnet? or steel
Hello, no, that is not a magnet, but piece of iron. This was just a part of my dumbbell
chuck it in a dish of vinegar and come back tomorrow. job done.
Sometimes this can work, but sometimes not
@@YouCanTelevision Interesting. I have never had it not work. Though badly corroded may well end up taking much more than one day. I wonder why/when it doesn't work? Some specific metals perhaps?
I tried this once and the reaction was not so effective as in this electrolyse video. When the rust is deep and the form of the item is not simple electrolyse method is more effective (and cheaper) if you have a notebook adapter from an old laptop
Elektrolizy nawet można przeprowadzać za pomocą prostownika od doładowania akumulatorów samochodowych i szybciej nawet wyczyści ten klucz niż zasilacz od czegoś tam Pozdrawiam serdecznie. 👍👍👍👍🇵🇱
You should specify how many volts the charger is providing.
Usually a standard laptop charger provides 12V
soak it in vinegar and leave it a couple days all of the rust is soft and easy to clean
