Gabe. You've been travelling for decades now. Ever heard of google translate? You can hold your phone over Chinese script and it converts it to the English alphabet. Very very easy!
It sometimes doesn’t always work. I even tried using it on some food products when finding out what they were when I was in Madeira and it couldn’t translate somethings properly, despite it being in Portuguese. 😮
Super cool place, Gabe. Great video. I remember reading a novel set there decades ago, I forget the title, but that was when I first learned about it. Of course, the Portuguese had outposts all over Asia, like Malacca in Malaysia and Timor in Indonesia, as well as Goa, Diu and Daman in India and more all around the coast of Africa, and they were a notable presence in places like Nagasaki in Japan.
Wow! Such an interesting place. The combination of both Chinese and Portuguese is absolutely fascinating!!! What a cool place to visit! I learn something new with each video I watch. Thank you!
@Gabrie, thank you so much for sharing this vlog. Macau was never on my (potential) travel list. But after watching your clip, this place seems fascinating. The Chinese culture combines with a touch of Portuguese style architectural buildings makes it to the 'will visit' list for me. Thanks again🤙🏽
From what I've learnt, there's a lot of street signs and building names in Portuguese but! Portuguese is pretty much not spoken by the young generation today. it's mostly Cantonese English or Mandarin. Portuguese or the local patwah is pretty much spoken by the elderly and it's in decline unfortunately. And I wouldn't worry about the English part, I speak the language very well. Especially the young well educated generation.
This makes me want to revisit Macau. I have been there only on a day trip from Hong Kong. I took a short ferry ride and returned in the evening. Now I plan to go back and stay longer. Definitely one of the most interesting places I've been to.
17:06 It’s cool to hear Gabe have the same thoughts I have at time while traveling. I love authentic restaurants as well as experiences with the local people and language but sometimes your just burnt out and want a simpler experience.
The pavement with the black and white designs (17:25) with stones is typical Portuguese, and can be seen in Lisbon and even in Copacabana sidewalks. Azulejos (ceramic tyles with illustrations, usually white and blue) too.
I always had a great time in Macau... It is China's answer to Las Vegas ... Next time you are there... take the free bus from the ferry terminal to The Venetian Macau or City of Dreams... Lots to see and do in that area... Enjoy!
In 1996, I took the ferry from Hong Kong to Macau. I was working and Macau casinos were a nice weekend getaway. It was reasonable too as they wanted you to spend money in casinos.
I enjoyed your wonder, especially the cool back alley. Hopefully Canada will also get the visa free soon to mainland China and we see you do an extended trip there some time this year, would be epic!
Hey Gabe… did walking that black & white cobblestone street and plaza remind you of Rio? (same same by the Portuguese!) I know you prefer to be outside and not go inside to places such as museums…but there’s a cool museum there that tells the history of Macau and the Dragon Boat Festival and how it originated there. Worth a visit over the casinos ;)

The main difference between Las Vegas and Macau is Macau is family oriented city and devoid of crime, homelessness and gun culture at the same time makes 3x more money than Las Vegas.
I was hoping you would end up in Xiamen where the terra-cotta warriors are found. Apart from the warriors, the city is very, very interesting. Just a suggesting, before leaving make sure you cross the bridge to Hong Kong. Safe travels!
