A cheap xbox like this is only good if u live in a house hold with children on the more uncontrolled side that are rough with their toys and electronics. This would be a good starter system for them to see if they take care of it and if they like playing games or if they just watch youtube or twitch on it. My nieces just watch youtube so in the future ill just get them tablets.

Microsoft over engineered the cooling on the X-Bone to avoid another RRoD disaster.
Cause it has a bigger fan and the ps4 has a smaller one a smaller fan has to work harder to push air out the system
My og xbox one and vanilla ps4 were never loud personally
I used my xbox one in the UK and it got warm and you heard the fan kick in, then I lived abroad in a humid country and the system deffo got hotter and the fan operated more often occasionally crashing out of games to the dashboard, then I got the x while still abroad and you can tell they designed for heat reduction so much better as it barely got warm despite the heat in Turkey.

@Jarrod Flint The Xboxes have all been manufactured abroad though. The originals were made in Mexico, then from 360 onwards, various parts of China. Just because its an American company, doesn't mean they're actually made in the USA.

I got one of these and the disc drive didn’t work, I returned it (had a year warranty) and the second one worked beautifully. It also came with a blue controller; the console was also in 7.5/10 condition. Worth a buy if you want a current gen console

Honestly... I work for GameStop and almost EVERY “refurb” console we get that has a “shiny” piece of plastic, (OG PS4/XB ONE), has been sanded like that... it’s to “fix severe damage/remove leftover sticker residue” it’s pretty common since about 10%-20% of consoles we get have a sticker that may/may not come off easily
But yes... the controller is a little bit of a crapshoot sadly... mostly 3rd party parts or parts off other controllers into a Frankenstein controller so it doesn’t surprise me.
If possible I recommend JUST preowned... if it didn’t work it would have been sent back for “refurbishing.”

Derktron I mean it’s technically not a flip flop you can say something is dying and still take advantage of sales (like me when block buster was a thing)
I mean, yes, a company can go through financial strife and have a lot of issues, but he has often bought things from Gamestop. He likes the face to face interactions with people. He clearly expressed this, this is nowhere near a flip flop.
Watch some of those teardown videos of refurbished GameStop consoles, they don't do anything to restore the quality they just make sure it works enough to sell, there's a reason GameStop's going out of business you guys don't forget it.

I bought one of these at the start of the generation and am still using it, it has always worked well and is still working great for me.
I've had the og for over 3 years and it works just fine. I think some people really don't take care of their tech and that's why they get so many issues

Yeah I was thinking a magic eraser or something. It probably had a sticker set all over it and they used something abrasive to remove the glue.

Honestly for an extra controller, a blu-ray player, and a streaming device you definitely get your money's worth.
They have done the sanding on multiple other consoles as well. This is normal for refurbished consoles from GameStop.

@@3daces69 I mean... the 2fps difference doesn't mean anything. It runs the games at the same resolution at the base Xbox One. The base Xbox One could play movies in 4k as well if it had the 4k bluray drive and HDMI port to support it.

Bro that monitor is almost 600 bucks. I got my 27" 165Hz Omen monitor for 300 more than a year ago.
I still have my OG Day One edition and it hasn't failed me yet! I will keep it and await the Scarlett.
You can polish the top of your Xbox, and it will shine like new. This is my all-time favorite console, and I understand that it was an underrated gem. The power brick makes it incredibly quiet compared to the PS4. Even though I've applied new thermal paste and cleaned it, the PS4 remains too loud to enjoy, while the Xbox One Fat is simply amazing. In 2013, they recognized the importance of having a power brick to prevent overheating.
Playing games on a 2013 console and comparing it to games from 2023, I'm still impressed. These consoles have consistently delivered quality, even though the general public tends to be obsessed with specs and may not appreciate what this console has done for us. It has kept us playing for over 10 years, and everything remains very playable. This console is still worth the effort to clean and maintain on your own.

I just replaced my first gen Xbox one with the gears 5 Xbox one x and it was well worth the wait. How sleek and intricate the design is, the removal of the cumbersome electric box, how quiet it is compared to the old F350 purring of my last one, and the MASSIVE improvement in performance makes me feel like I just arrived at the the top of the current gen. I know the new consoles are probably making their debut next year but I’ll be happy with this one for quite some time.

I think it’s a known fault with the Blu-ray drive not reading sometimes, my OG one does this too the trick is when putting the disk in to hold it and fee like a second of resistance then let it go in and that seems to work

I myself got a PS2 slim for $50 at a retro game store for Black Friday and a bunch of games for it, they were doing a Buy 2 get 1 Free deal which is pretty nice. The PS2 is pretty awesome so far.

The shipping initially damaged the OG Xbox One and caused a problem with reading discs. Eventually the drive fails and you have to hold the disk until it tries to grip it then you let it go after a second or two then it reads. Microsoft stores would take it back and replace the drive within the first year.
I always found if you do the update when installing the game it could takes ages, so I always install the game first then run the updates if I buy physical discs which isn't often these days as I buy digital to game share
I still have the Xbox Day One 2013 edition. Never had an issue.

Good job Rich, you made me feel old. (Probably because I'm still using my og refurbished Xbox one from Newegg got in 2015.) A final fyi is a USB cord connecting the Xbox to the controller syncs the controller faster, I don't know why, it just does.

Rich reporting on TH-cam drama because so-and-so got caught doing this or that, is even worse.
For whatever reason, when Gamestop takes in *any* of the Xbox One / PS4 systems with the piano gloss finish, they will take a Brillo pad to it and sand out the finish. I've seen it a few times when i was in the store, shopping and someone happen to come in with a trade-in. That's why Rich's system had the finish sanded off. I really don't know why they do it but there you go. 0_o

Same thing happened to me when i bought my Xbox one X, I couldn't sync my controller and had to buy a charger cord to sync that way.
So I stopped using TH-cam for quite a while due to college and recently I got back into watching some of my fav channels. I used to watch your channel a lot and all I can say is damn you’ve lost a bunch of weight. Good for you and thanks for doing these awesome videos

Rich! You've inspired me! I bought this big kickarse Acer monitor thats like 37inch (10 YEARS OLD) and yeh its like I dunno, for all the consoles I have its perfect hey. I watched the Matrix movies on it and it looked really awesome. These monitors where expensive when they came out, probably top shelf stuff back then. Like goes upto 1080i n 1080p but so many people upgrade to 4k just because its the standard or there competing with friends or neighbours and I just think man what a waste. Like I got my 360 n PS3 both modded 2 years ago and I play them heaps. I fire up MAME or FBA daily on both of them. I played Kingdom's of Amular and even playing Red Dead on PS3 now because I wanna finally finish it and do it before I play part 2. But I've been playing the Tales series too, PS2 library, PS1 library and yeh just tons of games that people wonder why I'm not playing PS4 or Xbox One and its just because I'm not on any hype train. I like the medium I'm at. I benefit from it. So I've probably gone off the subject of your vid but I thought when I saw this cheap Xbox One dang can't get that I want the X, the new new one but now u gotta think are u u gonna get a 4k TV with it? Only XBox One exclusive game I want is Forza Horizon 2, but I still need to play the first one and have such a huge backlog it will likely be years before that happens. At least until it becomes a collector's item in 10-15 years, the prices for used XBox Ones are only going to go down from here.

It's the weakest out of all the stationary current gen consoles. That said, it's many times more powerful than a Switch, ps3/360 and can do 720p-1080p 30-60 fps on the newest games, not too shaby considering it's six years old. Base PS4 had a bit more power though.
I mean, the Wii was alright for gaming too if you got the right games for it, but I agree.

I had bought two refurbished consoles from GameStop a few years ago.
I bought a ps3 and a few months later an Xbox 360 e and had the same problem with the glossy plastic. It’s like it’s been cleaned with some extremely harsh cleaner. I would rather have an extremely scratched glossy finish than an all matte one that looks like it was sloppily cleaned and passed through hundreds of owners.

Honestly what sparked my interest is that my best friend is getting divorced and her soon to be ex left some XB1 and 360 titles. As for the TV scenario i have 2. Currently the living room has PS4+Switch while the bedroom has a second switch dock.

My hunch on the scuffs on the top is that maybe it had stickers on it and they had to use some kind of abrasive to get it removed and "clean".
There's a video I saw the other day from a 'Tuber who took apart and fixed up an Xbone which had a broken sync button. Might want to search it down and check it out.

Hey rich I use that model of xbox and i can say the elite fat model had a matte finish on the top however yours is unique. it was sanded. Also this model sometimes wont read discs when you put them in normally. to fix that let the drive suck the disc in with your finger so that way your finger touches the xbox. Some how that launches the disc in the box
There are good deals out there now on current gen if you can find them. I got my XBox One S (the good one with optical drive) with the original white controller, HDMI cable and power lead for €100 a couple of months ago, and the official rechargeable Li-Ion battery brand new for €20, and it was totally worth it!! No scratches, the console still had the original factory seal on the back and the controller looks almost brand new!! I opened it up (as I just had to change that white LED to something more "me"), and took a look inside, and it was in original, great condition. Just changed the thermal paste and clean off any accumulated dust and that's it; I couldn't be happier. Only issue is its the 500gb model, so I will be changing that maybe this month for a 2tb drive, got 3 months of Ultimate for €1, tons of cheap second hand physical games available, all the Game Pass ganes, the Gold games... I'm really enjoying it. And the controller, for me, has to be the most comfortable one I have ever tried!!

Free HDMI cables are love because my cats seem to ALWAYS manage to yank mine out of the TV Ina way that leaves half of it still in. And you're right about the price of controllers vs the price of the whole system. For a cas newbie who just wants a system it's a good price (or someone who might want a cheap second unit for another room).

I had that exact disc read issue on my One S 2 updates ago games wouldn’t intermittently load and a reboot would help, drive also sounded fine but the software didn’t want to show the game or disc loaded in.
