As always it just depends on price. If the price difference between a 4070 and 4080 is like 300 even 400 hundred dollars than by all means get a 4080. But right now you can get deals on 4070 laptops that make the price difference more like &700-$900. A Legion with 4070 can be had for like 1600-1700 right now, a 4080 version comes in 2500+. That's a gap in price that is actually bigger than the gap in relative GPU performance, as long as you are fine gaming at 1440p/1600p which these GPU's seem perfectly capable of handling.

I could've written this comment on so many channels, but here it is. About two years ago I bought my current laptop with an RTX 3080 16GB, and argued that the amount of VRAM was the best single future proofing feature. Everybody laughed, but I have been proven to be right. I can still run heavy RT titles with low effort, at least on 1440p.
The laptop 4070 still will not beat me. Believe me. Frame Gen is just a cheating feature that causes unnecessary lag. I will sit this gen out and maybe even the next. I run almost every title at QHD with RT, problem free, and even some on 4K after some initial stutter. Why the f*ck would I want anything below 4080, and even that is too bloody expensive with less VRAM. That is the reality of (laptop) GPUs today. No progression, but with a huge price hike.

Haha, i already pulled the trigger on the 4070. It is largely the same as the 3070ti last year. Coming from a 80w 3060 it was very nice. In my country, the 4070 is around 70%- 50% the cost of a 4080 laptop. Sure it can perform x1.5 better, but at nearly 2x the price, i would pause at the thought. The only thing i miss with the 4070 would be 12gb vram, 8 is not really enough in some less optimized game. Also, the chassis that come with 4070 (legion 7i in my case) is a lot nicer than the cheap Gigabyte G5 that was my old laptop. I really appreciate the sound and visual quality improvement that come with the change.
Price to performance stop matter when you cross certain threshold that is outside your budget. I would suggest Jarrod make some vids on laptops that are good for their price range, i think that would be for the best. A laptop that could reach 20 usd per frame would not be exactly exciting to an average person if it cost 5k usd to purchase for example. That is a lot of money.
I would recommend that if you come from anything 3060 and up, don't. But if you come from 3050 and below, it does make a large change, esp since 4070 chassis are usually higher end model that have some nice features that come along if the budget allow it.

Wait, so why not buy 3070ti laptop? Even the budget models like the nitro 5 pack top tier displays (1440p 165hz 100% srgb panel with at least 300 to 330nit brightness), USB-C charging, pretty decent speakers, good keyboard, great upgradability (more than the legions even), etc. Infact, my 3070ti laptop costed me half as much as a 4070 one in my place. And I was coming from a 1650 + 4600h ideapad 3 gaming laptop.
Also, as you move up the tiers the scamminess of gaming laptops start to increase. For example, compare lovelace's gains to pascal's 1070. The gtx 1070 outright doubled the 970m's performance if even more than doubled it. It almost trippled vram and all that for 15% more power draw and kept largely the same price. THAT is a generational leap, not this pathetic rtx 4080's improvement over the rtx 3070ti (yes, the 4080 is really the 4070ti of laptops and the 3070ti is the real rtx 3070m as its the same desktop 3070 chip). Infact, it really should've packed 16gb of vram for its asking price.
And the current rtx 4090 simply has too low of a power draw. It should be around 230w and thats entirely possible considering 3 years ago we had 200w laptop GPU's.

Here's the thing you failed to take into consideration with the review: Price ranges. NOT the price difference, (although it's slightly skewed as eg. $200 is 20% of $1,000, but 10% of $2,000) the price RANGE. Your percentages are 110% correct, but the base prices of said laptops are not affordable at all. All the examples you showed were about $2,000 for the 4070 version, which is an absolute gyp. If you have that kind of money to spend, go for the 4080. However, the reality is you can find 4070 laptops at low prices. At least in comparison. Normally, the MSRP hovers around ~$1,500, with it going as low as $1,190 during a sale. However, you will almost *never* find a good 4080 laptop that isn't below $1,500. At the end of they day, you'd be lucky to find a 4070 at a low price, but it's not impossible, and if you find one, that's a good deal. The 4080 comes with an awesome increase in potential and power, but a similarly substantial increase in price...
For people with the money to spend to get a 4080 laptop, the video comparing it to the 4090 is much more relevant.

In India the difference for the same configuration with RTX 4080 costs around $900 more which is not justified at all. Budget is a thing and it can never end if you keep stretching your means. If 4080 then why not go for 4090, one might also ask?

      Alienware M18 (18" 480hz screen + i9 13900HX + 32GB Ram + RTX 4080 + 1TB NVMe SSD)
      Vs.
      Lenovo Legion PRO 7 (16" 240hz screen + i9 13900HX + 64GB Ram + RTX 4070 + 1TB NVMe SSD + 2TB NVMe SSD + ).
For the same price for both (about USD$2,000), which one would you select for content creation and especially video editing, rendering, etc.?
Starting from the fact that I currently work on content creation and video editing from an HP (15" screen + i7-7500U + 16gb ram + 1gb AMD Radeon + 1TB M.2 SSD) and it lags when I'm editing videos, when It starts to export, it gets quite hot and I practically have to leave it alone in that activity so as not to force it...

I honestly think you should go with Alienware, I can now say that with confidence and I will tell you why. No matter what specs you are looking into any "gaming" rig released in the last few years is almost guaranteed to run any AAA game properly and will most likely remain that way for 3-5 years depending on selection. However you could have parts or technical issues in that time frame that most companies make you jump through hoops to deal with. Except apparently Alienware, they are such a massive company they can offer remote and on site tech support, parts and accidental damage replacements, etc. I forgot the channel but a reviewer on gaming laptops talks about this subject in depth. If you go through Dell you can get the premium support sub for like 20-25$ a month which offers it all upon purchase of a gaming rig. Any other company you will probably be mailing away your laptop and waiting possibly weeks before you see it again. When spending thousands on a gaming laptop you want the best, fastest, and most affordable and convenient solution to any problems that may occur. For me half the reason for not wanting to spend big bucks on a new gaming laptop was a lack of options when it came to possible technical issues and fast affordable solutions. It would seem only Alienware offers that, I'm about to get the M18 4070 right now as we speak with the premium sub. Games will run great and they will look good doing it, some people are hard core performance snobs when it comes to small percentages of an increase here or there, personally I am more concerned with quality assurance.

This year is pretty underwhelming GPU-size, since you need to bump one tier (70 to 80) to get considerably better performance.
Only the CPUs got a nice improvement, but partially thanks to "raw power" since last year "H" CPUs were prevalent (the Alder Lake "HX" CPUs did not see widespread use).
This year both Intel and AMD decided to just release slightly power limited Desktop CPUs and their top tier Mobile offering.

Have you actually tested them against one another? In all of my testing, the 4070 beat the 3070ti by ~10%+ *before* frame-gen. The gap has seemingly only gotten wider with driver updates too.
With DLSS3, of course, the results are incomparable altogether. Regardless, the generational gap *should* have been larger, but I suppose a premium is to be paid for innovation. Dev’s very well may eventually begin to rely on technologies such as frame-gen for more and more graphically demanding titles in the future (perhaps a few series’ down the line), when games become near-impossible to run through traditional means. By that time, such technology will no doubt be heavily developed and matured into a state that it wouldn’t make much sense *not* to use it. However, for the time being, I suppose said premium is to be paid for the possibility of future innovation, which kinda sucks.
Again, the generational leap should have been larger, regardless.

Nvidia really wants us consumers to shoot for the 4080. We can resist by skipping this generation and waiting until Nvidia doesn’t butcher the consumer grade products, thinking the broke will buy the top tier cards.
Make them offer better bang for the buck in consumer grade products. Don’t let them get away with trying to hypnotize the consumers who can’t eat for a year if they get a 4080 laptop shoot for it anyways. Teach them to NOT give the most expensive cards the best bang for your buck, because the people who buy the top tier cards do NOT care, and the consumers buying 50-70 series cards DO.
Make them AT LEAST make a 4070 Ti that’s similarly priced to the 4070 but performs MUCH closer to the 4080 (but not too much closer), and price the 4070 like a 4060, the 4060 like a 4050, etc because that’s what these cards are. Not everyone goes crazy with AI. I prefer not needing all that AI to get good gains.

So obviously I read the comments section and it seems like u made a big error man. The price difference between 4070 and 4080 is too big to take it out of discussion. Im currently researching to buy a gaming laptop and im on the fence between a 4070 and a 4080 but the difference is around 1000€ between them. Im currently looking at a Asus ROG strix G18 i914th gen with 32RAM and 4070 at 8gb which is around 2000€ in my country. The 4080 config is 3000€. So in your opinion what should I go for? To be noted: im looking for a 17' or 18' laptop with a great display, very good CPU and a very good GPU. I will mainly use it for gaming and ill start getting into editing softwares aswell. The difference again between 4070 and 4080 is almost everytime 700-1000€. Either that or I bump down to 16' for a 4080 but i dont want a 16' laptop. I ve done extensive research and the asus g18 seems the perfect fit. The gpu however is a whole different story. Im a casual gamer. Would it be worth it to go for the 4080? Or can I go for the 4070 and stick to it for the next 3-5 years? Its a big decision and when it comes to gaming laptops from what i ve seen theres never a good time to buy one. Things update and new stuff come out way too often to postpone the investment as my current laptop is slowly dying after a 5 year run. Please advise if possible ^^

  • @RyomaE28
    @RyomaE28 ปีที่แล้ว +7

This generation the best options are a 4060 or 4080. 4050 has only 6 gb vram and is pretty dismal. 4060 is a good balance between affordable and vram. 4070 is only 10% more performance than 4060 and way far off from the 4080 in terms of performance. 4090 is for people who aren't worried about budget and usually go for the best of the best anyway.
The biggest decisions are between a 4060 and 3070Ti. While the 3070Ti is definitely better without considering FG, the newer gen laptops offer better CPU solutions for people who want to use their laptop as an actual laptop and not a desktop replacement.

    • @siyzerix
      @siyzerix ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah, but 4060 laptops also cost more than 3070ti laptops, and generally the 3070ti laptops pack a similar tier of CPU to the 4060 ones (remember the 13th gen H series is just 12th gen rebranded). And if the 4060 is barely 12% faster than the 3060 at 1440p, well the 3070ti will be a very solid 15-20% faster than the 4060 at 1440p.
Best bet is to just grab a 3070ti laptop which already gives you performance very close to a 3080ti mobile and just wait it out till rtx 5000 for what is hopefully an actual upgrade.
And don't put your hopes on AMD. They're going to disappoint once again. Their rx7600S already costs more than 3060 laptops yet performs the same.

4070 would be great for thinner designs like the Legion Slim and Zephyrus. Otherwise, it's disappointing to see that Nvidia gimped the lower offerings in favour of the higher tier just like their desktop GPU lineup. Worst of all? This will be in favour of the Ti version coming out next year.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, if I'm deciding between a model of the ROG Zephyrus M16 would I be better off getting the 4070 version with the slimmer profile/thermals of the Zephyrus? The 4080 would thermal throttle and wouldn't be as powerful because of the 145W power limit?
At that point if form factor isn't THAT important to me, would it just make sense to bite the bullet and get the ROG Strix Scar 16 with the 4080 with it having 175W?

So I bought a 4070 laptop, I got the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i. And I managed to get the laptop to use 130 watts in games and I got my superposition benchmark score on the 4k preset from 9213 to 10056
So yes the RTX card hits its voltage limit at 0.985volts. But the beauty of it is that you never run into a power limit because it struggles to reach its max 140 watts.
So I went into msi afterburner and I selected the frequency curve at exactly 0.985v and bumped the frequency as high as it was stable. I boosted the card from 2390 mhz all the way to 2780mhz stable. That bump made the card use 20watts more power and gave me a 12% bump in real word performance.
Most games use 120watts of power but there is no micro stutter because I'm not ever hitting my power limit. I also added 400mhz to mrm clocks. Overall it was a really nice bump in performance and temps are still great. 75c
You won't be able to do this with 4080 or 4090 cards because they hit their power limit way before their voltage limit. So to overclock those cards you need to lower your voltage to reduce watt consumption and then increase frequency until you hit your power limit with as high a frequency as possible so it's tricky.
But the 4070 just use max v core at 0.985v and oc to the max. I'm very happy with the results

After price matching at Best Buy and with the dell sale, and the 10% coupon added on made it go down to 1300$ usd with the 16GB DDR5 Ram, I7 13709HX, 4070, 2560-1600 Resolution. The 4080 model for me was 2,822$. I already own a 4090 beast desktop rig and needed something weaker to play old games like medieval 2. For that price difference and the great sale I got, I can’t justify the price gap at all, plus ultra settings aren’t really needed in games at all especially with the small screen and beautiful panel as it’s not the R2 line. Honestly for the price I got I think it blows the 4080 model out of the water for price to performance, also the weight of the m18 4080 model with the big battery doesn’t really make it portable at all, while my m16 is a lot less weighty and can take it around a lot easier. Overall very happy with my purchase
