    Great video as always Hush. While H42 has seemingly become the face of affordable controllers, I believe the shift we are seeing is driven by GP2040-CE more than any specific company. Without their efforts to build open source firmware, it would not be possible for any of us to do what we do.

      You are absolutely right and I probably should have leaned harder into the GP2040-CE element in the vid. The people behind that have really shaped the current controller landscape as you say. (I think maybe I was caught up with just the seemingly endless amount of these devices being posted on the sub.) Regardless, thank you for watching/commenting! I appreciate it!

    For a while I've felt like keyboard-based leverless controller makers have been pricing their offerings at a similar level to traditional sticks despite the actual build cost being significantly cheaper in just about every possible way except for the board, just because they could. But the reality is there's never been a reason for what are essentially 12-16 button keyboards (with build quality inferior to most actual keyboards) to cost anything near what they do. Even the "smaller market" argument doesn't hold up all that much... rhythm games are a significantly smaller market than the FGC and the controllers tend to use significantly more expensive buttons, switches and cases, but you can still get arcade-accurate cons for Sound Voltex and Beatmania IIDX for around $170-210. And let's face it, between GP2040-CE and Flatbox, a lot of the legwork has already been done by the community.
    I'm not saying this to denigrate the people who are making these things, but to acknowledge that these prices were never going to be sustainable. There will always be a place for premium options at a premium cost, but premium cost for thin plastic and low profile Kailhs doesn't make sense in a world where that's trivial to replicate.
    If anything, I hope this encourages leverless makers to up their game. Get crazy with the designs and materials in ways that can't (or won't) be imitated within a week by copycats. Find niches that aren't being served and serve them.

    Coming back to the FGC after a hiatus, the sheer variety of options, especially leverless and with GP2040-CE, is SUPER cool to see. It really feels like custom or prebuilt, there's a controller option for *everyone*, especially at such approachable prices.

      So many cool options! I agree, there's practically a controller for every person's particular tastes and sensibilities these days. And thanks for noticing the editing, BUT I can't take credit. I used the services of an editor for this vid just to see the difference or see if it would save me time. Spoiler, it didn't really save me time since I still had to do the rough cut and make the little Seven Samurai joke clip myself. But maybe if I can keep this channel growing, I can afford to pay for an editor sometimes to try and kick these up a notch.

  • @millsjonah
    @millsjonah 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The T16 is near a perfect controller for me. The size is perfect, the extra buttons make such a massive difference. Even if the layout of them isn't exactly what I would do, I don't expect any non-custom controller to align perfectly with me. It has art support, GP2040, buttons are great by default (although I upgraded mine to the Lofree Ghosts). And most importantly of all, the controller is damn near silent. For basically every other leverless controller with extra button I was able to find, they're 3D printed which creates a noise profile that is much louder. The Punk Workshop (love their buttons btw) isn't 3D printed, but no art support.
    I would have bought my T16 even if it were the price of the Kitsune. Doesn't feel like there are any compromises for the price at all. My only wish is that they had an official art-printing service, or someone like Focus Attack added this to their lineup.

      I don't see the reason in such simple device to cost more than $100. You just can't fuck up such controller. You don't even have to design the electronics, the looks or the layout as it's basically established standard. Instead of paying absurd price for such controller you can just build one with available parts like control board and high quality arcade buttons.the case can just be a typical wooden box for decorating. Just print the layout, drill holes and mount the buttons and the electronics. You don't even need any skills to build such thing. If you want it to look good, just spray paint the box. DIY hitbox will be as good as those premium priced ones.

    It's crazy how fast they've grown in the FGC. I still remember back in October of last year when I bought my T16 not being sure if it was a scam. But at the time I really wanted to try out the extra buttons for SF6. At the time the brand was still pretty unknown, and fast forward now, everyone got one 😂.
    Haute42 is really making a service to the community by having a fairly priced products, and also they were really smart with the T16 (and the other 16 buttons model) as a good part of the community was looking for those extra buttons for SF6.
    I have tested the Razer Kitsune at a local, and to be honest the material and feel of the controller are good. But 350 euros/dollars for a controller with an outdated layout, and which is impossible to customize (if you want to add extra buttons)... it's a joke. If I'm paying 350 euros / dollars for a controller now, it would be for a custom build, not for a mass produced one.

    • @sethsez
      @sethsez 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      They're not able to do this at a low cost because they've got some magic sauce nobody else has, they're able to do it because everyone else was over-charging for extremely simple and cheap off-the-shelf components and community-maintained software in a form factor that's durable more or less by the very nature of its construction. An actual fightstick would necessitate more expensive parts and an enclosure with a higher material cost and more consideration for proper structural integrity. The price to performance ratio compared to the competition wouldn't be nearly as stark just because fightstick prices aren't quite as out of whack so there's not as much correction to be made.

    • @erikcf5206
      @erikcf5206 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sethsez I mean they do have the magic sauce of being able to make everything in house and then shipping. Being in china allows them to keep the low prices and still be profitable, us/euro based companies can't afford that without barely breaking even (not talking abt hitbox, more of flatbox makers and such)

      Yeah, that silver looks nice and its ability to camouflage fingerprints is definitely worth mentioning. I think I would prefer the silver (or white as you say!) color either way just because black seems so matte and standard. Great review! But I don't get something. The aliexpress page for that haute42 controller says it is compatible with the PS5 but you said it does need a dongle. How is it in reality? I have an old leverless controller for PC that I bought many years ago and recently swapped its internal board for a Brook Fighting Board P4+ that I had lying around and now I can use it on my PS5 but only with PS4 games. That's why I'm interested in these Haute42 controllers, because I want to play PS5 games, but if I still need a dongle, in that case I may just get a dongle and use it on my modified controller that already works and feels great. What do you think?

    • @HushMySweet1
      @HushMySweet1  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I understand your question. So, these devices are compatible with PS5, but they need authentication which a user can achieve with one of these dongles and a trip to the web configurator page. When you're looking at different products, make sure the one you want mentions a "pass through" slot. That's where you'll put the dongle. Some older GP2040-CE-based devices do not have them. Most of the Haute stuff has them, however. But remember, Haute is based on the GP2040-CE; Brook is something different, so they don't play nicely together. So the dongle/pass through stuff will not work with your existing Brook stickless. For your fix, you can 1) buy a Haute product + dongle, or 2) you can keep your original build and just buy an adapter like the Brook Wingman, or 3) replace the board inside your original build with a Brook P5 Plus Fighting Board (and then just sell your P4+ board to recoup some of the costs). Good luck.

    • @davidgabay9398
      @davidgabay9398 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hatue42 and generally GP2040-CE controllers do support PS5 connectivity, but without a dongle they are limited to only 8 minutes of activity before they turn automatically off. To prevent this you need either:
      1. MayFlash MagicBoots 1.1 dongle - just connect it to the pass through port and enable USB Host in the controller settings.
      2. Brook Wingman FGC - this is an adapter for almost any type of controller that supports PS5. You can even play with an Xbox controller with it.

    I've been really impressed with the quality and price on haute's products. I got to borrow one at a local, truthfully it's a little too small and cramped and I didn't feel the benefit of the extra button in that 30 mins or so at least. But the sheer value for price on all their products is a game changer that I can't deny. The surge of new flatboxes and other gp-2040 based leverless devices though is really good for the market, prices on these controllers were getting out of hand a couple years ago. The fact I can name 3 brands that make sub-$100 leverless controllers that are all of decent quality or better would've been unthinkable in 2022.

      The MX stem is nice for compatibility but the tolerances it requires to work can be an issue. The best solution is to cut a very tiny square of Scotch tape, basically the same size as the stem itself, and place it on the top of the switch stem, pinching it down to fit. This makes the stem ever so slightly thicker, which will hold the cap on more securely (but it can still be removed if you need to). I had to do this for a mini rhythm game controller and it worked perfectly.

      They have 13 button controllers as well, where the only extra button is the additional up button over the down one (and it can be disabled). I agree the 16 button controllers are a bit of a cluster, but as far as I know none of their models are ONLY 16-button, they all have variants.

      Like you, I prefer the larger T line over the S line. Haute is coming out with an M+ unit which also runs larger. So definitely consider waiting for that if you want metal like the one in this vid, but just want something a bit bigger. I looked at a FightBox (not the B10, but a more basic one) in a previous video if you want to see what they look like inside. Everyone is different, but if you want something more like a traditional HitBox, then the B10 will probably tick more boxes for you. These Haute ones have embraced the thinner form factor similar to JFA Micros and such. I own both these controllers and several versions of the Junkfood micros. They are all great, but for the money, the M16 is unbeatable, only thing it doesn't have is the PS5 compatibility but you can use one of those USB Brookes or Mayflash adapters and it will still cost less.
    The Kitsune has a plastic casing, M16 has a real metal case. Button wise, I think the Kitsune's are the best feeling, but not enough to justify the price. I got the silver M16 and you get much less noticeable fingerprints on it. I also got those generic button caps you can get on Aliexpress for the M16 and they are much better than the stock button caps IMO, nicer feel and let the LED shine through, recommend the smokey black ones because you don't see the red of the switches much and together with the LED lighting you can have any button color you want.
    Also nice to change SOCD on the fly, though I'm not sure that's specific to the M16. I change it to up priority when I use Blanka in SF6 and back to neutral with other chars/ playing Tekken 8.

      I like a bigger footprint in the lap and more wrist area so it is just more comfortable to play on (and the unintentional piece is there is also more room for art which is also a plus). So I would probably put them as T16 Crystal or the M16 Plus. S16 nearer the bottom since it's so small. But a lot of people love that about it, so take my stance with a grain of salt.

    I love that this product exists. Cheaper controller alternatives are amazing, and varying price points that allow all people who want to delve into leverless to do so is obviously good for the FGC. I do however feel this video is a tad disingenuous, as it does gloss over the fact that the Razer Kitsune, while a good bit more expensive, is in many ways significantly better as a controller than the Haute series has produced. Optical switches are a large improvement over mechanical ones, the size and better construction quality are noticeable, the native compatability with PS5 means no additional hardware is required to connect to either PC or Playstation, which is important given that the PS5 is tournament standard for consoles and reduces any worrying regarding controller performance. I have also had Haute controllers disconnect from Playstations randomly, something which does not happen to the Kitsune due again to the native compatibility.

    • @HushMySweet1
      @HushMySweet1  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have both controllers and don't think optical switches (which you can get in other cheaper models, like the LightFox) nor the native PS5 play (one dongle and a single trip to the web configurator) make up for the $200 disparity. If a user wants a bigger footprint and fewer buttons like the Razer Kitsune, then Haute42 also has a controller around that size which is also offered in a traditional layout. Some people might want the brand name and novel switches and the right-out-the-box PS5 compatibility, and that's cool. I just think the value proposition is so much stronger with the Haute42 device. Its lower pricepoint makes it much easier to recommend to people on the fence, since most people in my circles don't want to pony up $300 to get into leverless. Razer isn't bad, just inefficient imo. (But I'm just one guy and this is all just my opinion obv) Thanks for weighing in with your perspective!

      Hey, thanks for watching. As far as the Xbox stuff, I don't have any of that to test on, so my response here is not firsthand experience. However, when it comes to Xbox, I believe original Xbox support is native, but One and Series needs authentication. So you'd enable it on the web configurator like I did for the PS5 here, just for Xbox, and then use an appropriate dongle in that pass through slot. There is a Magic Boots Xbox dongle but they are hard to find now, so you can try a Mayflash Magic X instead. They function the same, just the Magic X is a bit longer. Good luck! And if you need additional help or something I said isn't quite right, the folks over at the GP2040-CE discord are helpful. discord.gg/juj9SNT8

      It really depends on what you prioritize. If you really like optical switches, then the Kitsune will have this beat. If you like arcade style buttons, then Hit Box will win. Does it need to work right out of the box on the PS5 or are you okay with some tinkering? The Kitsune will work straight away, but something like the Haute42 T16 Crystal (if you want to install artwork) or the M16+ (if you prefer metal) are cheaper and have more button options, but you have to install a dongle to make sure they work on PS5. It's easy to do, but some people don't like to mess with their controllers. Mavercade also has some fun layouts if you like these ones with more button options. It's hard to give a true recommendation without knowing what you prioritize in a controller, but all of the ones I mentioned will function well. Thanks for watching!
