The hardest part is keeping client safe when your scissoring around the ear. I taught myself how to long-layer and cut my own hair during the pandemic, and have just started feeling comfortable enough to try cutting my husband's hair. I thought I'd check out a more classic-looking style after doing a fairly decent job of a fade into a bit of a disconnected longer top (slightly Peaky Blinders, but not as extreme). I found it less intimidating than a full scissor haircut. Now I want to learn it though! This looks so fun! When his hair grows out again I want to try this technique. 💖

I'm a dog groomer. So I know how to handle scissors, combs, etc. very well. However, my husband asked me to cut his hair, and that's definitely not a breed I've done before, so this was very helpful. 😂 thank you! The hardest thing for me is that my husband has locks like Fabio and can swing from hair to his shoulds to a clean upper cut and fade. I'd love some more tutorials on very long to short for mens hair, scissors only.
I am recently interested on barbing and am very nervous as I do not wanna mess up while practicing will try this method and others this will help me out good content
I tried my first attempt at cutting my husband’s hair today. He has a large bald spot with thin, fine but slightly wavy hair. I think I did fairly well for the first time except my scissors were not sharp enough. I saw a small gap at the neckline, but hopefully this will be grown out by Christmas. He liked it anyway. I’ll know what to do differently next time, I think.
I cut my hubbys hair about 1ce a month or longer he has half grey and half dark. It is also loose curls. I'm learning as I go. Lol. I use scissors and some clippers . I enjoy both.
That is awesome! Well done Sandra. You’ll only get better and better and the fact you come to TH-cam is particularly useful as there is so much information on here.
Just into 2nd week at LSB. Manchester 9 week NVQ. I’m 54years old, have always wanted for 30 years to learn Barbering, I’ve been in construction and quarrying related industries all my working life, so a real, change for me but I’m loving the training, and the new lease of life and the chance to do something I’ve always had a passion for. Hope I pass the course, as much advice you could give me would be appreciated. Going forward, I do have the chance to take on a one man barbershop, but don’t know if that’s too much to soon. Thanks Johnny. P.s. Your work looks great. 👍
Mate I really admire anyone who takes the leap and switches careers like that completely and I think you are in the right place to learn. The LSB has a great reputation. Personally I wouldn’t go straight into running a shop. I’d try and get a bit of time in a good shop and watch the business side of it but also practice what you’ve learned in volume and you’ll become very proficient.
Hey. I've recently started cutting hair. I am not a professional, I just like it. I am cutting my friends hair regularly. I learn about barbering on youtube. Your channel has been the most helpful untill now. Your guides are detailed, made for begginers. The visual sections u put in the videos are what I like the most. I struggle in my cuts with knowing how to handle each type of hair and request. I would like to see more theory about the basics and then your personal tips or variations of the basic rules. I havent seen all your content so maybe you've already put out the content i just asked for. Anyway, keep up the great work and thank you!! Appreciate your content.
Thank you Armelo, have a look at the playlists on my channel as they might focus more on what you want to know without having to watch videos like product reviews. I also have two courses on UDEMY which might be of interest if you are looking for something more structured.
I’ve been cutting hair for about 3 years now and I work in a barbershop. I struggle with flat tops and would love to see you make a video on how to do a proper flat top. I also struggle with blend the top with the side whenever I cut hair for a customer that slicks the hair back.
I probably can’t help with flat tops as I don’t have any clients at the moment who have a flat top. However the blend in slicked back hair would be good info. I’ll try and get it on the channel
Barber here, been working now for almost 2 years. Still learning something most days. My struggle is always the blend point between the clipper work and the top..it's going ok but I find I really have to work hard to get a nice blend. Any tips would always be gratefully received
It's often the toughest part of the cut Paul. That's a piece of content I need to think about making. You can't underestimate how large a subject it is though as the blend can be different on different hair types and head shapes. I think having a handful of techniques that you can pick and choose from is key
@@theoneminutebarber thanks mate, I've definitely tried many different ways and I have my own way that works best but you know how it is, that guy that walks in with that hair that really doesn't like you lol.
The hardest part for me is the that no matter how passionate I am about my new career, I fear of not being able to become a good barber because I'm a slow learner!
Thanks for the candid comment, But honestly whats the big rush, even if you are a slow learner, it shows something that you are here on youtube trying to learn. You've got the right attitude. Trust me, I have never been gifted at anything other than, I will keep working at something until I can do it. I think you are that kind of person.
Thank you for such a calm comprehensive video. I have 2 brothers in my neighborhood who have cancer so they just can't get out so bless you. I think I can do this. ♥️
Great content! I’ve been barbering for 3 yrs biggest struggle to learn was scissor over comb and figuring out sectioning the crown area with certain haircuts, depending how their crown sits and with the hair style they want. Finding content like this has been a help.
I cut my little boy's hair, which is VERY curly. We live in Asia, where most barbers don't have a good understanding of naturally curly hair... So, unless we go really short, he has the best chance of a decent scissor-cut is at home. His curls are beautiful, so I try and keep the top longer. But, the curls tighten at different lengths so it is a real challenge! I'd love tips if you have them!
For some reason I really struggle with fringes. The current trend among teenagers - certainly in my part of the U.K. - is to have long floppy fringes that are out of proportion with the rest of the hair. The sides then tend to billow out and I find it hard to judge the length. This video has come along at the right time. In the shop we don’t tend to get many all-over scissor cuts and when we do I find I tend to struggle a little because I don’t get enough practice. But this video is fantastic - lots of info and it’s simplified everything. Thank you.
I hear you Dave, same here. Some of the teenagers I get never want anything off the fringe but also skin fade on the side. Have you seen my over direction video? I think that's the best way I could describe my long fringe process.
After watching this so many times today I’ve just tried it on a client tonight. I think it went well, only issue I had was finding my guide. My client is older and has straight white hair with a cotton wool type texture. And tips for this kind of hair please ?
Yes two tips. Make sure you keep it wet all the way through the cut. And if you are losing your guide just slow it down and make your sections thinner.
I’m struggling clippers over comb on the paritial ridge. When I do my fades, I try to leave bulk at the ridge so it’s a nice transition but I struggle with blending it with clippers over comb. I want to save time instead of using guards.
I also think this is the most problematic area, when you go up from the nape and hit the curve of the occipital bone, the hair is now getting longer quickly, which also means darker quicker. And not so stretched out. Doing the fade below or above the occipital bone is magnitudes easier but doesn't always work for head shape, sometimes it has to be on the ridge, keep doing it though as you will get better the more you have to do it.
@@theoneminutebarber thank you for the quick response. I seen Chris bassio did a video review on you. Been cutting family & friends hair since high school; had one year of beauty school after college, but had to drop out. My biggest struggle is keeping track of the guide (I never knew about the guide until beauty school). I seem to do better when I 'freestyle' ;-)
To be honest I don't really use guides either, I did to start with it helped me understand but after such a long time I just know what I'm cutting now.
I’m a barber in a very busy shop. I do this type of cut many many times a day. However I was taught to cut the perimeter first and work up from the bottom.
❤️♥️❤️ this kind of cut usually we cut here in UAE FOR the kids saloon..thanks a sir for your effort to teach us..i actually do how to cut the first video of you have that i watch.. ♥️♥️love from Philippines..
Love your videos. Started working at a predominantly men’s salon after cutting women’s hair. Hardest thing for me is… using a 2 or 3 guard…I always end up too much weight around the parietal ridge and I fight blending the curvature of the head.
Thank you for the videos! I am in cosmetology school and they do not really cover mens cuts ( barber school wasn’t an option due to my work hours ). These videos have helped me tremendously. Thank you 😊
Great channel I've been cutting my own hair since lockdown. Could you do a video on hairstyles to best hide or limit the bad look of a receding hairline at the corners on the temple.
If I find a volunteer I will make that video. The trick is to actually not hide it. You can emphasise the recession sometimes by keeping it long. This is because those areas are see through. It's best to have a normal fringe shape but bring it higher. That's what I find anyway.
Barber Michael, your videos are always enjoyable. Will you be doing any videos on barbering beards? Keeping a beard maintained and shaped properly? Technique on what and what not to do? Thank you for channel. I've been a long time follower of your channel.
Thank you Branden. I should really include more beard work, I do have a couple of awesome beards coming into the shop so will try and rope them into some video.
Thanks again man these teaching vids are so good I needed to subscribe and started one of your Udemy classes soon as I do that I got the other one to watch. Thanks again 🤙🤙
i generally have to cut very short cuts with clipper work. i am confident enought to take any clipper hairstyle. But when someone ask me to cut hes hair with a longer hairstyle, i already start sweating and try to find an excuse. eventhogh i know that practise makes perfect. the debulking part seems pretty staightforward woth the scissors, where i find difficulty is the refining part. you cut the excess hairs over the comb. when i try and do that, i usually create a harsh line. Any tips on how to prevent that? cheerz from Belgium!
Bardzo dziękuję za ten profesjonalny poradnik. Jestem fryzjerem męskim amatorem (mam nadzieję, że to się zmieni) i właśnie takiego filmu mi brakowało. Prosto, czysto i z efektem. Pozdrawiam! Michał P.S Właśnie tak strzygę szwagra. 😄
Graduated fe school last May. I’d say my BIGGEST issue is that I either cannot see or don’t know what to look for in a guide. I’ve tried googling to find videos that go in depth in terms of how to find/identify guides and cannot find any. In school my teacher even spent time writing up something to help, but it did not. One other issue is with the practice heads. It is even more difficult to find guides on those so practicing using more difficult. This is especially true in trying to practice scissor over comb. Would love to see a video with a strong focus on identifying guides :)
@@theoneminutebarber BTW your videos are superb. What gets confusing in general when watching tutorials online is when what I see when working does not look at all like what I am watching. The hair on the heads is often not as dense and will be sewn in a direction that makes it look vastly different that what we are seeing. I’m sure many people can adapt. For me it really throws me off. And I’m not talking about your videos, but ones in general….. Curious about where your shop is located? Geographically? Thanks for the super quick reply! :)
I'm in the north east of Scotland. The city of Aberdeen. Model heads are really useful but they do have limitations. They don't have as much hair and are often only made with Asian hair which is quite coarse and straight. They are also threaded very strongly in certain directions
@@theoneminutebarber Agreed (re: model heads). I love Scotland. I have family from the States that spends about 1/2 the year there for work. Thanks again for the great content. I really struggle with Men’s cuts, which is incredibly frustrating since I’ve been watching them happen on my own head for a really, really long time ( as I’m older than dirt ;)) You are doing a fantastic job and look forward to your future content!
I trim my husband’s hair, he has a cow lick on the crown of his head. Sometimes, his barber cuts that area to short and then the hair sticks straight up making him appear like Alfalfa. You may not remember that character as a small boy in the early tv shows. But his hair was always sticking up as part of his character! I am trying to master the scissor cut. My father was a barber with the old red and white barber pole outside his shop.
I’ve been practicing for these gentleman haircuts and I’m impressed by your clipper over comb cutting up to down and I’ve been training clipper over comb down to up and this is interesting to try and I’m going to practice your way I’m trying to be able to take off hair and know what I’m going to do from start to finish I need help
Thank you sir for your hardwork and instructions but If you could go into deeper details and a more close up guide to how to blend the hair and avoid steps in it, it would be great.
I learn a lot about cutting im just starting cutting hair during pandemic but i want to learn more coz I enjoying it now and now im the one who cut my, uncle, father, brother, my nephew and sometimes my grandmom's but im still beginner so my question is this kind of cutting style or technique cut use when i cutting women's short hair? Coz my grandmpm want me to cut her hair too barshop in our country is so expensive
One of my biggest current barbering challenges is mastering a low fade . If you have a chance to show how to cut those it would be appreciated. Thanks 👏
Get nervous around cutting longer hair types to the shoulder and even past the ears. My hand movement is awkward is there a way to show beginner stage on how easy to make the connection when it comes to a 1 fade or skin fade and or scissor cuts too. I have no issue with clipper over comb but i get nervous w that too
I understand that. The connection on fades is the tricky bit, and long hair is nothing to be scared of. It's all about having a plan or method and stick to it.
@theoneminutebarber Sorry, I didn't notice that was actually an older video and you changed that already.Thank you for your advices and very good videos.I just started to work part time in a barbershop after many years of cutting just friends and colleagues hair as a hobby so all the tips and knowledge are very much appreciated!
How do you manage boys with mixed (black white) thick hair and scissor cut? Not a fade fan. Stay at home mom trying to do my best for my husband and sons. I can't afford a nice set of clippers yet, so its the horrid Walmart 30 dollar set.
Hi my name is Gina I’m watching your videos I’m new in this is industry I’m 50 years old I finished school I just got my license I’m feeling intimidated at the shop we’re j start working at school never show me cutting with ✂️ can you help me
It can sure be intimidating, I felt exactly the same when I started. I went in with the attitude that I'll try my best and the worst that can happen is I'll get sacked. But I was eager to learn and always asking to learn from the boss. I think that's the way you've got to look at it. Grab the bull by the horns, try and learn as quick as you can from everyone around you and take any opportunity you get to try something new.
@@theoneminutebarber Oh he’s a total sexy baddie now. He might even get lucky after we get all those tiny hairs off his neck and after I sweep the deck hahahaha But seriously. Thank you!
Used your technique yesterday for a scissor cut, really helped as I went quickly then refined, helped me to let go and work quicker. However, I always have difficulty placing my fingers at the bottom of the back of the head. Do I keep them 90 degrees from the shape of the head (like a clipper) or do I follow the line I started above making the shape square? Is it more to do with the wishes of the client 90 degrees if he wants a taper, straight if he wants a longer look?
Jean Francois you'll notice I don't go down that far with my fingers. I normally pull the hair out at the occipital bone and then scissor over comb the rest of the way down. That said if you need to use fingers try taking horizontal sections instead of vertical and cut with your palm facing you when you are at that area.
I watched a few of your videos and I scissor cut my bf's hair, I mean he looks presentable but I look at it and it's kind of piecy in some areas on the sides closer to the top, I believe it was because I used finger cutting to join the side with the top but his hair is a bit wavy there. I couldn't find more info on a slightly wavy haircut. Could you provide tips on that? Thanks!
Hey Beni, I'm not sure on the length you are cutting too, but often the patchyness can be caused by the section being too thick, it's worth investing the time in making your sections thinner and cutting more of them. That said this is a curly hair video I made that explains a bit about recoil th-cam.com/video/A_AnH9ODoQo/w-d-xo.html

Hello from Arizona! I found your video because I've never cut hair before and wanted to trim my brother's hair for him. He wishes more barbers used scissors. Anyway, I love your video! I definitely didn't get it perfect, but he doesn't look hideous so I consider this an absolute win, haha.
Well done Dragon, glad the video helped.
I started cutting my sons hair and have the fade pretty much down but struggle on the scissor cut. I can't wait to give this a go.
Good luck
Hello! I have already used your technique. It's fantastic. I love it and it works really well.Thank you so much for sharing.
You are so welcome! Well done. 👏
Bravo ..i am lesrning now for men's hair cut ..i used to cut only for ladies hair👍❤🥰
I’m in school for hair cutting thanks for the tips.
God bless a people like you going out of your way and teaching others i really appreciate your teaching you are the best I am learning alot
Thanks so much Sakhi
Barber of 10 years in the UK. Want to adapt and improve my stale scissor work especially the top.
Also dealing with this new trend of fringes 😅.

You've got to start somewhere. Everyone was nervous, including me. But you just have to do it.
@@theoneminutebarber ur right 😊
I tried my first attempt at cutting my husband’s hair today.
Well done you’ve got to start somewhere and at least you know what to improve.
Thank you so much you tutorial. Specially for us beginners. I sometimes struggle with how much hair to take on the sides. Thank you 🤲🙏❤️
Just into 2nd week at LSB.
@@theoneminutebarber Cheers much appreciated. It’s a matter of of asking, no shame in not knowing. It’s all a lesson even at my age. Thanks again. 👍

I'm so sorry to hear that Catherine. I hope this helps if even just a little.
Thank you Leanne. I think the biggest thing to remember is how the hair will recoil when it is released. Being aware of that is important
Thanks bro we appreciate your hard work, btw I'm a barber and also I'm a very beginner
I’ll look it out right now.
❤❤❤❤i start learning mens hair cut thanks for the tips you share with us,,keep up the good work sir..
My pleasure thank you.
@@theoneminutebarber thank you. Really appreciate the advice 👍🏻😊
I love the way you do your scissor overcome technique and would like to learn more about it how to do it myself
have a scroll through my videos Avery, there are a few videos with that type of content in more depth
You can do it both ways. I prefer working from the top down as I don't like the weight laying on top of my section when working bottom up
@@theoneminutebarber thanks for the reply. Love your videos

Love your videos. Started working at a predominantly men’s salon after cutting women’s hair. Hardest thing for me is… using a 2 or 3 guard…I always end up too much weight around the parietal ridge and I fight blending the curvature of the head.
Thank you Jo, have you tried the straight up method it really helps.

Thank you for the videos! I am in cosmetology school and they do not really cover mens cuts ( barber school wasn’t an option due to my work hours ). These videos have helped me tremendously. Thank you 😊
That's great you are adding to your learning outside of cosmetology school. How long do you have left before you are qualified?
Good Class. Taking your class will be fine I understand well.
REALLY A TREMENDOUS JOB.💪🏽🔥👍🏽
I am not licensed but do enjoy cutting men's hair. Thank you for all the information 🙂
Good on you for learning. It would just make getting licenced easier
My biggest challenge is fringe! I just do it for my husband and sons so I only get to practice once a month.
The fringe is a tricky area. In fact I would say that the fringe and the crown are the two hardest areas to cut.
Greetings from Aus ! Your descriptions are excellent. Each step clearly explained & clarified. You know how to teach ! Thanks a million !

Would love to see the use of a white / cream comb on dark hair so I can see unevenness of hair ro be cut,, more clearly . Thanks for the content 👍

i generally have to cut very short cuts with clipper work. i am confident enought to take any clipper hairstyle.
Absolutely key at your stage is that your sections are small, and you can see a little bit of your previous section.
Work slowly.

I am making a video at the moment which has top down shots. You can clearly see the guides so I will zoom in and slow it down.
I really struggle with Men’s cuts, which is incredibly frustrating since I’ve been watching them happen on my own head for a really, really long time ( as I’m older than dirt ;))

This method takes a bit of repetition to learn, but keep going, once you've used it 10 times you'll be surprised at how easy it becomes.
Thank you sir for your hardwork and instructions but If you could go into deeper details and a more close up guide to how to blend the hair and avoid steps in it, it would be great.
I am currently setting up an online community where that is the exact goal. oneminutebarber.co.uk
You can use scissor over comb on women’s hair if it’s a shorter style. That’s completely ok
The hardest is the top middle coming down I’m afraid I leave a callous any suggestions ?
Its key to make sure you follow your guideline. You could also make a profile guide through the middle
The side cutting around the ear. i cut with scissors and I can't get the side short enough.
There comes a point when it is so short you really just need to clipper over comb.

One of my biggest current barbering challenges is mastering a low fade . If you have a chance to show how to cut those it would be appreciated. Thanks 👏
A low fade, do you mean like a taper? I have a video on tapers.

Many thanks. 😊
Would be possible to use a white comb for dark hair cause you can't see clear the hair coming out of the comb.Thank you!

How do you manage boys with mixed (black white) thick hair and scissor cut? Not a fade fan. Stay at home mom trying to do my best for my husband and sons. I can't afford a nice set of clippers yet, so its the horrid Walmart 30 dollar set.
I have a video I am working on with very thick hair that may help. It’s a whole head scissor cut.
Thanks for the tips. You'r the best
Super nice hair cut
Thank you 😊
The hardest part is learning when to put in different guards or open and close the clippers.
I think you over time you will become seamless at choosing. Sometimes I choose a guard and don’t even know why I just feel it’s the best one to choose
My husband has Dementia and there is no barber in facility. I’m trying to learn how to myself!!!!
Well done for trying to learn something new. I hope the videos help.
Love your technics.
This will be my first time cutting my husbands hair hahaha he won’t care what the result will be but this is super helpful.
Let me know how it goes
@@theoneminutebarber Oh he’s a total sexy baddie now. He might even get lucky after we get all those tiny hairs off his neck and after I sweep the deck hahahaha But seriously. Thank you!
Brill good on you
Used your technique yesterday for a scissor cut, really helped as I went quickly then refined, helped me to let go and work quicker.
I'm trying to learn how to cut my husband's hair! He has wavy hair with such a unique curl pattern so it is difficult to get it correct!
Sometimes you have to just accept the wave. Without seeing it I would say that you can't cut a wave straight.
@@theoneminutebarber oh yes! I'm not trying to.
That said this is a curly hair video I made that explains a bit about recoil
