- With a sign language vocabulary of more than a 1,000 words and the ability to understand thousands more, Koko was a scientific marvel and source of wonder for decades. The Western Lowland gorilla, who died this week at the age of 46, captured the world’s attention not just for her communication skills, but also for her displays of human-like emotions. This celebrity death has been by far the saddest and most unforgettable one of them all. His death makes me so terribly sad. And to see this, it just melts my heart. I see it as they were kindred spirits whose heart recognized the other, hence the instant bond. R.I.P. Robin Williams, sweet man and sweet Koko.

Oh poor Penny. I am sooooo sorry for your loss. Koko was her life, and the 2 of them gave the world so much.
Clearly she valued this animal more than getting married and having kids herself...kind of pathetic in a way.

I did not meet Penny, but I can assure you that she is an extremely happy person and satisfied with her unprecedented great achievements in animal psychology, if you consider that pathetic, I imagine you can boast of much better things.

Rip, I remember watching her when I was very young. Thought it was so cool humans could communite with her.
Recovering Soul Her Mother was killed by poachers just like another male who was taught standard ASL - he later described what it was like losing his Mother.

I feel you, sorry to hear about your kitty. Know we will be with them again one day, until then hold on to the love and spread it around.

Such a precious amazing girl. Breaks my heart. I hope Penny is doing okay. She didn't just lose her friend but her daughter. Penny raised her since she was a toddler and taught her pretty much everything she knew. She was Kokos mother in every sense of the word..

In my experience, all animals be able to feel emotions like joy, love, anger, fear, or sadness.
But only Koko whas be able to tell us about her feelings, needs and personal point of view, so precise.
No other animal could keep up with her.
In that respect, she was completely unique.
And of course she was completely unique because she had her own personalitie and a big heart to.

We have all known Koko since we were kids. I think I first saw her in the late 70s, and we were enthralled. She was a beautiful soul and lives on with us.
Koko was a PERSON, she was no more an animal than we are. And yes i know we are all animals but you know what im saying lol
Nah man, she was the furthest thing from a person. She was a pure soul full of love and other feelings that have been lost on people. Can't even walk down the street without someone acting up nowadays.

Wow, she passed....I’m very saddened...I watched all her videos. She was awesome; she showed that other species can love and understand. She showed humans can talk and understand great apes on a whole new level.

Very sorry for Penny Patterson. I've followed her work for decades. This must be crushing for her. I hope that she is able to find moments of comfort in between the tears, which will take up much of her time for awhile.
