Meet Koko's New Kittens

- Koko got her birthday wish this July 4th - not only did one kitten come to visit, but a whole litter. Koko fell in love with one, and the other fell in love with her. Koko has adopted these two kittens into her family, and it has energized her world.
Not only have Koko's maternal and play instincts kicked in, but she is signing more to her caregivers and generating new content everyday that can be used by The Gorilla Foundation to create empathy fro great apes. This can have significant benefits to both endangered free-living great apes and those in captive environments, by encouraging the development of 2-way communication with their caregivers (which Koko has had since she was a baby).
The Gorilla Foundation is now working on a multimedia sequel to the classic book, "Koko's Kitten," which has already reached millions of children worldwide, and has the power to motivate millions more to learn how to make the world a better place for all of its conscious inhabitants.

@@sam-mv7qp If I had to guess, making gorillas to mate in captivity is very difficult. Also, her training probably would've made it even more challenging to get along with a male.

I think this is the second litter. The kitten who died came from the first litter that had been presented to her way back in the 80s.

Most Symbian are incredibly tactile and know instinctually how much force to apply. Not to mention, Koko's not new to the kitten game. Her first cat friend died in the 80's. In fact I still have that National Geographic issue with her and the kitten on the cover.

I am very touched and impressed by Koko. If you give a species trust and time and space to grow in the personality, find out the talents, is you are a good teacher with huge empathy and intuition... you do a great "job". I miss Koko. Even Kokos as human beings.
I use to donate to Koko, each year I would get a calendar, he was a miracle, and much missed. He taught so many people what do called animals were capable of.

I have so much respect for this Lady the work she has done for the Gorilla and for Koko has been legendary, such an inspiration for compassion.
Nobility, compassion, empathy, traits that a wild creature would not naturally know. That means it took 100 times the effort for Koko to develop such traits, truly deserving of respect from all humans.
As Koko learned to struggle and overcome, we too must understand to appreciate the struggle of all animals in nature as well as the struggles of one another. Her willingness to try and become more was not in vain, as we have now learned to have a greater capacity for love than we ever knew. Rest peacefully now, Koko, we will never forget you.

there are wild baboons that have pet wild dogs in india or somewhere. Really, the baboons are extremely abusive to the dogs and the dogs are essentially captives.

Did Dr. Patterson ever have a child? She's a smart woman, and I imagine if she had had a baby, she wouldn't have allowed Koko to hold the baby or even know of it's existence. That would be like rubbing salt into a wound perhaps? Interesting to ponder though.
I respect Dr. Patterson's view that she would never do this kind of thing again with a Gorilla, even if she was younger because she didn't think it would be right to do it twice. We have enough info now about the Gorilla being an intelligent, thinking being capable of love, empathy, thoughts and worries, etc.
Penny has put so much into making sure Koko gets the best life she can, under the circumstances. It must be more work than a human raising a human to adulthood. At least humans take care of themselves in a couple decades rather than the five decades that Koko needs constant care and stimulus. Hats off to Dr. Penny Patterson and Koko!
It's here in a symposium Q&A on TH-cam.
Her life is very full!! Its full of the love that she obviously shares with Ms. Patterson and she certainly enjoys having 2 of her own pets. Everyone has a different life to live and a gift to give, and I don't believe that Koko is missing out on some other, better life. Rather, she has a very unique life with different joys and sorrows than other gorillas.
Koko is not only provided for, but protected, given all she needs, have love and friends, and while her maternal instincts may be kicking in, it is worth noting that some humans want kids but can't have them.
Koko is treated better than many humans in this world.
I am very happy for Koko, the kittens love him and we love Koko and his kittens. Koko you are a very kind, friendly and very powerful being. I am very grateful and proud of you, I wish you all the best, long, healthy and carefree life Koko, your kitten and your human friend.
