Really glad you made a video like this breaking everything down. As expected, all of it just costs way too much for the average person and you are better off just sticking with the stock RX8 and enjoying it for what it is. The REW definitely just seems like less of a headache if you are trying to make more power and they cost basically the same as the hybrid Renesis. Doesn't make sense to push the limits of a Renesis block for the same price of an REW and it doesn't even care at the same power level. I really hope one day 3-rotors enter the conversation considering how expensive REWs are nowadays. If someone could figure out manufacturing costs of having a custom made 3 rotor with 3D printing or just advancements in machining efficiency, that would be so awesome. If I was going to spend that much money just getting a stock engine, I would probably just do something even cooler with the 3 rotor lol. At the moment though, I'm happy with my RX8 power wise. It makes enough power to still have fun street driving on the backroads, and the 9K+ rpm sound is just unbeatable. For a daily-driver fun car, the RX8 is really quite good.
Honestly at the end of the day, I think the thing all of us are really waiting for is the results of a turbo hybrid renesis. I want to see what the exhaust flow is capable of and I want to see how long it will last, what the turbo response is like, and how much horsepower it will make
Im at about 25k on my REW swap on a 6k car. My REW two years ago cost me 16k for a new build by parts. Mazda at the time was raising engine plate costs by 100$ a month per for each plate. Biggest problem is compatible parts since nobody makes a full kit. Ive wasted more than 5k on useless parts. The REN you can basically use all stock systems which is the money saver. You basically just pick out a turbo, make a manifold and weld up some tubing. The rotarywerks crossmember is really good, but may need cutting to fit. Otherwise their turbo placement wont get you a large enough turbo to justify going REW hp wise. Since the REN can get you to 350-400 range.
I was lucky to have gotten my REW block in 2020, build wasn’t done until 2022. I’m running really mild power for longevity atm. 311whp on this REW is easy on it, on a renesis I really wouldn’t trust it for very long. Eventually I may want to run e85 etc, but just taking it easy. Good luck on your build.
@@TexasVexes Thanks, you aswell. Pricing wise I worked with Adam at REC and we managed to buy plates before mazda's cutoff when prices skyrocketed. I also have a greddy turbo rx8 that is around 300. Not to sure what I am going to do with it to be honest. The thing is tho that people sell rx8 engine parts all the time on facebook, sometimes for 100$ a plate. So long as you know what to look for you can atleast get 50k miles out of a spare engine. Then just rebuild and swap when one goes.
You’re absolutely right. We’re all excited to see what Kyle and Mr Rad can do with this development. Shoot if you have A/C on the greddy Rx8 maybe daily it in the warmer months? I used to watch REC videos about doweling and studding kegs for big power. He knows a lot. Lucky 7 did mine. Great guys Fris and Willow. Anyhow man sounds like you have some fun cars! Do enjoy
Going in depth on an REW swap for an RX8 and creating somewhat of a "how to" would potentially inspire other 8 owners to consider this option. Great video!
I got my full license now im happy i can't wait to take my rex out for a rip when its repaired 😊😊 keep up the work rad personally i like the stock 200Hp 5 speed i have I dont want to mess with it horsepower wise just yet so you do you 😊😊.
first gen rx8 transmissions are so hit or miss. Depending on abuse u can break them, as well as the rear diff at stock power, 300hp seems to be where it starts to get easier to do that though.
This video os a great answer to a question every RX8 owner has had. Thank you so much for making it. I was surprised at the price difference being so close though...seems REW is the way to go and they're proven for bigger power...plus if you ever port it...the braps
Just the best honesty around.can’t thankyou enough for your knowledge and experience.wow ,if you are ever in nz,I personally will pick you up in my na 13b rx4 coupe.regards.
Great video! Very informative! I'd be curious to know more about supercharging an RX-8. I imagine that a supercharger might be easier and cheaper to install, and the characteristics of the supercharger might suit the RX-8 well.
I appreciate the breakdown of these costs because they put these swaps in perspective. The original MSP engine for 99.9% of all applications is best for the RX-8. If you track your car, work on building your driving skills.
Love it! RX-8 is so much fun to drive. Obviously the FD has much more clout but man, get a cheap RX-8 and whatever engine you can afford that's reliable.
The only thing i think the Renesis really has going for it is part availability. It's a newer engine, and it's easier to get any necessary engine parts. Rx-8 with a REW or RE engine is a perfect combo
@RADPotential lots of wheel spins. Upgraded tubessss ? Methanol apparently eats rubber ? However I was thinking for the yellow rx8, but. Would methanol benefit a N/A rotary ?
There is a couple of guys down here in Oz that have actually put a strong renesis 13B into the FD quite successfully….if you would like NA is a good option & point of difference I would be keen to see a hybrid renesis peripheral port without turbo …
I like rotaries. My first car was an FB, I then had a widebody 13b turbo rx7 that I built. Fast forward to my current RX8 from day one I knew I was throwing a LS3 into it. It is more expensive, absolutely, slightly heavier - sure, but it’s also more reliable and a better final product.
i believe when i was researching the rew swap ive seen a lot of negative reviews on that Rotary works swap kit so just fyi might wanna dig into that more to confirm
Very interesting video. Personally I would stay with factory rx8 engine and maybe supercharged it. Leave it N/A. If we want more power then maybe FD or another vehicle.
I wonder what happened to Aaron cake? Id like to put a FC turbo in my rx8, and put my renesis in my VW. But California 😢 i still would want to try to electric turbo an MSP renny. Im just happy at this point that my rx8 runs and passes smog. I can still find rx8 motors with trans for 1200. But no matter what, an FD motor would be a joker size smile every time you drive it. I know my FC powered VW was. 😊
I wish Mazda still made parts for old rotary engines and kept the price low. You can buy an blow RX-8 but still end up “blowing” 10k if you want to fix it right and have even an N/A engine with new parts, it seems.
Ok but can i buy a stock full 13b swap transmisión and all for 7 and run 390-400 wheel? Reliably? On a rx-8 Edit: I have watched the whole video.. I no longer want to build a rotary 😭💀 maybe 2j swap 🥴
Another option is a FC/13b cosmo engine, which are far cheaper for the core and can be rebuilt with selected FD parts. And will easily get a lazy 300 rwhp

I like your plan Mr Rad. REW in the green Rx8. All of the research and thought including KMR’s input is much appreciated.
How much power is the transmission good for?
Id bet I'll probably break it at that 400hp mark depending on how hard i abuse it.
