Back when I worked at a Nissan dealership as a parts guy we got in a late 80's hardbody with the KA24 in it. The mechanic took the valve cover off and it looked like he hadn't taken it off! The sludge had built up so much that the actual cover turned into a mold for the sludge! It was truly a sight to behold. You could not see the cam or anything!

    • @turbo8454

I took the valve covers and intake off of a 67,000 mile 283 Chevy V8 and the sludge made a mold of the parts I removed. About once a week it would oil foul #7 plug so I decided to investigate.
As that was a far more robust engine than anything today, I cleaned the sludge out, replaced the nylon coated cam sprocket and put it back together. Drove it another 3 years and sold it to a guy who ran it another couple of years before the car rusted away around it. It never used oil and never fouled another plug.

Eric, as an Ex Hyundai parts manager who did all the Genesis and Equus training, Genesis coupe is actually a much smaller more basic platform than the Sedan.
For example the Sedan is a double A-arm front end, the Coupe is a plain strut. The diff ring diameter is much larger on the Sedan. Though not a Kia guy I'm reliably informed the Stinger is on the lighter duty platform possibly with some cross over/hybridization/upgrades.
We had HUGE struggles with blatantly modded and abused Coupes and the owner demographer boiled down to 98% "complete douchebags".
To the point where as dealers we were very much onboard with not replacing it, or rather as the case turned out, replacing it with a 4dr sedan in the Kia line up and then back again in the Genesis stand alone line up.
Not actually quite what us Hyundai dealers wanted (!!)
But still when... 50-60% of your customer service issues (this was prior to the engine failure issues so pretty darn clear sailing through a days work) was with a model that made up 5-6% of your sales (and in the north, that only seasonally) and negative of your profit at all levels as warranty fraud ate us up...then the writing is on the wall for that model.
The absolute visceral hatred I feel for GenCoupe owners was well well earned, and will stick with me for a lifetime.

The Mustang also moved from double A-arm (on Mustang I and II?, to be fair most cars had double wishbone front ends back then) to a basic strut front end from the Foxbody(?) onwards too I think, even the GT350 Shleby has a strut front end.

Someone got in the car, turned off the dash cam, took the car for a joy ride, and spun a rod bearing. The dealership refused to fix it, saying the issue was pre-existing even though it was clearly not knocking when I brought it in and was knocking and stalling when I picked it up.

@@Trump985 People are under this misguided ideal that modern cars are better built than everything that has come before. Because of that, they never check their oil. What they dont realize is modern cars are built like absolute shit, whether that be to save pennies per model on assembly lines, or meet ever tightening EPA regs, whathaveya. Oil consumption that was unacceptable in 1971 is normal today because of the low tension piston rings in use today.
Atop that, older engines favored simplicity and being overbuilt for their power level, which tends to lend tolerance to neglect and abuse not found with today's lightly built and overworked engines. People like to mock the old iron for only getting 10-25hp per liter but that old iron just laughs at things which cause modern engines to explosively disassemble. While not completely immune to it, a Ford 302w or Chev 305 would go 150k+ being treated like this Tau was treated before it let go, and chances are it would be fixable in frame rather than totally destroyed. What they lack in power and volumetric efficiency they make up for with ruggedness!

The synthetic engine looked pretty clean, the conventional engine had some varnish but was not disastrous even with 10,000mi changes by any means.

The 6.0L96, the new 6.6 direct injected engine, they drink oil, especially when it's being floored for 30 seconds, then shut off, 200+ times a day. You also now see each vehicle less than half as often, meaning more unscheduled repairs, more breakdowns, and more time at the maintenance interval to fix stuff.

Awesome, Thank you for the tear down. If you may recall I posted in the TAU 4.6 thread hoping that you would come across a 5.0 engine for a tear down. Surprising video as I had heard that the timing set was on the rear of the engine much like euro engines and this was not the case. I was always surprised on how much power this engine makes which is impressive considering that the engine has no forced induction. BTW this engine is designed to run on regular and premium fuel There are two different HP ratings depending on the octane. 429HP is assuming that the owner is running premium fuel. I own a Equus Ultimate, I don't drive it a bunch and consider the car a weekend car as the MPG is not awesome. I change my oil by time and not miles so I average about 1,500 miles between oil changes. The more recent Genesis had the 5.0 option until it was phased out by the 6 cylinder engines. There were not many Equus vehicles imported into the states but unlike the more recent Genesis that had engine options the 5.0 was the standard and only engine available in the Equus. I love the Equus but the vehicles are not without their set of issues. The Equus is brimming with computers and electronics which is a huge source of the cars! issues. Great videos!

I had a Ford 390 in a '66 T-Bird Landau I got cheap, same thing. In fact, it was sludged up so badly, the oil return bores in the block were mostly plugged, so getting some revs on that poor 390 resulted in a dangerous dip in oil pressure. Same thing also with the rings being all coked up. I changed the oil soon as I got it home the first day, it mostly came out in chunks, and it only took 2¾ qts. to reach the full mark. I measured the amount of noxious goo as I scraped it out of every part of the engine...a full 3 quarts of sludge. Surprisingly, the bores still had crosshatch, although they were glazed, and there was no serious bearing wiping, and no scuffing of skirts. The stock oil pump was trash. Everything was just DIRTY!

It amazing that some automakers have the simplest method to change oil (e.g. Mazda has an access cover to easy filter change and right next to the drain plug) to the most complex (e.g. Ford 3.5ltr blocked by suspension or belt components, Toyota having O rings, and a cartridge system that is bonkers).

When the Equus was introduced the warranty was 100K and 10 years. So, under 100K? Yep. Warranty! I’m still carefully driving a 2012 Equus with 110K on it. Lots of oil changes, you bet. Induction cleaned. Serviced all system fluids several times. And, you’re absolutely correct on burns oil. Gotta check and add religiously between changes. Who knows how long this K-Iron might go?

It's amazing how under rated so many foreign V8 engines are in the US. Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai. They are typically MORE reliable than domestics and with equivalent power ratings.

I watch these tear downs and think, i wonder what i could build hotrod wise that would set people off. This V8 seems reasonable, buy a decent one, pull it apart, get some H beam rods and forged pistons, slap a couple turbo's on it and run moderate boost, make 600ish hp and stuff it into something like a Corvette just to be "that guy" I wonder how many people back in the '50's got angry when other folks were taking Allison aircraft engines and jamming them in ford t buckets or what ever and drag racing them. We can now make 4 digit hp numbers with smaller engines. Great tear down on this sludge factory. Cheers!

I've had two of these cars with the same engine and they both went over 150,000 miles and ran perfect. Also out ran a number of BMWs and Mercedes of the same year. There were some of the best cars I've ever owned with the exception of this air suspension which was also found on BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover, Porsche… All of them were garbage I just replaced everything with custom coil overs and never looked back.

42:31 Those oil rings are stuck fast. They weren't doing oil ring things. This engine likely burned oil like a 2 stroke. Easy death certificate for this one: Catastrohpic internal failure due to oil starvation via owner neglect.
Probably owned by one of those fools that thinks 'hurr modern engines better built I don't have to check my oil only old cars burn oil'.

Hey Eric That was obviously sold as rebuildable as a V6!!
Great teardown as usual, I bet you had a lot of cleaning to do to get rid of all that sludge!
