When you were modeling it, one thing you overlooked was that it wasn't just the headlights grafted onto the BRZ frontend. Its basically the whole Prius front fascia grafted onto the BRZ frontend.
It's more than just that though. The guy that's done the rendering has stretched and blended the two into something completely custom... And then Chris is trying to sandwich it over the speedhunter's bodykit bumper which is a different shape again. I thought when Chris said he was building this that he'd be continuing on from the lambo skills and using the render to print a completely custom bodykit from the model. I'm not sure how well it's going to go with the SH kit as a base. I think he'll keep running into things where it'll be "well that's not like the render."
Even the Prius looks like an entirely different car with a wide kit. There's one by Zephyr which looks great. The headlight cover idea might not be too bad as an easy route, especially if they are removable, to make it practical.
Chris, I think you’re overthinking your driving lights. You can easily mount pods in the center vertical vents/intakes within the lower portion of the bumper, then ditch the stock housing projectors. Pull the lenses off of the headlights and model/mold your new bumper section to fit within DRL LEDs. You got this!
This is the type of experimental envisioning and sculpting that originally drew me to the channel. I’m not even a tuner guy but I find the design process really interesting.
Chris, tip for the next projects: don't ever put objects on top of the calibration plate. Once it is damaged or even scratched, the next calibration you make probably won't have the same accuracy. Depending on the damage, the scanner will not calibrate anymore. Always remember that the precision of the scan is directly related to the condition of the calibration plate
Also before going down this direction, get the middle piece of a Prius front end and use the whole unit together. The Prius lights also have a certain amount of setback and coverage like you are using with your printed panel that make them look much thinner than your render. Maybe even head over to a Toyota dealer and look at the headlights in person. They are very aggressive and thin in person which I think would bring the whole look together and maintain functionality, without having to swap out light covers. You want a light saber, not a blaster! (Elegant vs inelegant solution)
Yeah, I think this should be at least explored a bit more. I was thinking that the lower bulb housing part of the headlight could be hacked off and kept slim, then hide some projectors in the bumper, or something along those lines. If it'd be possible to use the prius headlights and center section, might be able to get a nice fit. The center section would definitely need some work because the lines are different, though. The shape and distance between the LED "blades" in the render/prius look more intentional, but the PS edit still looks good.
Having just come here from a Star Wars: Republic Commando video, I am contractually obligated to say: "'An elegant weapon for a more civilized time', eh? Well, guess what: times have changed!" (Gods, but Republic Commando is such a good game, even now...)
The front end has so much going on but it works so well together. The lights and vent combination complements the aggressive styling of the rest of the kit. You've earned a subscriber here. This will be the best-looking street hunter BRZ out there. Also, as many comments have said, find a way to move the headlights to a vent somewhere else on the bumper so you aren't compromising the styling .
For headlights do what Cybertruck did! Hide the lights in the vents or something, I'm sure you can figure something out :D Changing out that huge ass pieces every time you want to night drive seems like a lot of hassle and would ruin the fun, no?
yea swapping them out sounds like a pain. I think the cybertruck idea could work well, but also theres 2 oval shaped holes in the front bumper that you can see at 18:48, there might be some decently bright fog lights or aftermarket headlights he could put in there as well
The headlight bar on the Cybertruck is notorious for collecting snow and completely blocking the lights. While I'm sure that's fine if you *don't* live in a place where the air hurts your face for half of the year...I do.
@@MishraArtificer i heard about that, however i doubt he will be driving this in the snow...with all the bodywork on it it'll probably become a snow plow before he has to worry about the lights
@3:18 Quick tip from a stereophotography user: When scanning, rotate the system that the line between the two cameras is parallel to edges, not perpendicular. This way you generate more data because both cameras see more overlapping areas...
Idea, put a small gap above the headlight, then put two small screws on the back that can connect to motors and retract the lens that covers, that way the headlight is ready to go without changing them out. The perfect custom build😎
That is a lot of engineering to make something like that look good or it will look like something that belongs in a rundown trailer park next to the old Honda with a homemade body kit. What he is planning on doing will also look unprofessional and I don’t think he will like the finished product.
They make a great one way glass tint in white like could shine through it but it would look tinted. You could easy cut it to shape and apply and be done with the lights.
looking real good i gotta say, and that comes from someone who actually like the stock gr design... the front end gives me some modern style charger look and its awesome
So many places in the bumper to mount headlights, those two rectangular openings in either side of the main radiator opening, the vents right in front of the wheels. Even deeper in the lfa vent so you didn’t notice them. I think it could look so much cleaner and you could modify what goes over the headlights to sink into them and be -chefs kiss-
Hey Chris just stick with the plan and keep that led on hood and shift the projector lights on bumper so it will keep the look and you will get that head lights also (try to stealth the headlight on the bumper, so it will not look like headlight but works like headlight )
Awesome build .... Funny how i was doing headlight conversions in 2001 and was getting bashed for it this brings back those good build feelings. Also there were alot of tris in the model. New subscriber for the build
a vertical pair of projector pods in the side vents, with a sideways opening housing like a popup headlight turned 90 degrees, i think it would look rly good!
I think tinting the headlights will be better so you still have the use of the projector lights as well for nighttime but will still get that look that you want with really dark tint will save you time and materials and give you the same look
I have done a lot of custom stuff back in the day when convesions where more of a thing. With your skills you can do it. I would use the prius light internals into a custom housings or manipulate the BRz housing to fit the Prius internals. Yes lenses/glass are always an issue. 3d printing is great. Back in the day it would have been metal work or fiberglass. Modifying the bumper is easy especially being a body kit already and already fiberglass.
This is why I like B is for Build, you get to learn new stuff. Idea for future projects: maybe make the driving lights behind the lower grill - sorta like the Nissan Juke ... even better have a design that retracts the panel inwards, like a modern take of what is on a 70s Maserati Montreal.
Big bummer to have bought those Prius headlights but on the upside stock lights with the cover look bang on. Loving that you're building a BRZ again. Big cheers and happy new year
I’m not sure how this video will do on views but I personally loved this “behind the scenes” look on how your renderings/ ideas/ thoughts come to life.
Something that would be really cool is if you made a mold of your headlight covers, made clear resin covers, color tinted the covers, and then paint match the car to the tint with a subtle fade into it to hide it.
A third of the way through the video and all keep thinking is how great it is that you're working on this SEMA build 9 months ahead of the show (or whatever it actually is..)!
Put the whole headlight cover on actuators with hidden hinges. Flip a switch and you have headlights, like a futuristic hideaway headlights. When flipped down it would look like a spoiler addition to the front bumper
Chris as an GR86 owner myself I see your vision for this, I would just recommend you if it's not too late to just use a very dark tint on the headlights (even wrap white) and leave expose the led part of it, it would still look good and make your life easy, plus it would be usable
I like the look of the hood with the headlight. What I would suggest is add 2 round lights into the front grill and make black out covers for them for during the day and when you're showing the car. And remove the covers when you need headlights. Much easier then making a 2nd hood you have to change out. 🤷♂️
An easy way to get a perfectly fitting headlight cover is to use sheet styrene. Heat it with a head gun then just mould it over. If you use clear styrene you can then see through and mark a cut line. As for main headlights, just put some in the side vents, lots of cars have headlights in two pieces now.
@bisforbuild you should try installing two of those powerful lamps in between the mesh and the radiator so you have headlights and keep the minimalist look of the car, just an idea. 😁
29:00 You can move the headlight to one of the large vents in the bumper and create a look similar to the new 7 or a rally-style headlights while still keeping the "prius" look
In your 3D software you can copy the surface of the original headlight, cut the form out, give it some thickness and then if necessary use the original surface of the headlight to cut the back so it conforms exactly if your original 3D model is exactly to spec. I would also start with some sort of a "bad look" on your hood, so it transitions to your cover. Or otherwise cut the plexi, which would look better I think opposed to covering it.
If you made the headlight covers clear perspex, you could use coloured tint to colour match to car or black tint if painting it black to match the car then the projector lamps would work through the perspex covers, but be hidden when projector lamps off
what would look really cool and a new concept..., is if that hood lip could be actuated somewhere in the middle (& maybe sides) to lift acting as an upper wing above the bumper - giving more aero, allowing more air in the engine bay and exposing the full headlights..but you'd have to use carbon fiber for strength
For the spray here is an idea. Get that window snow spray. Will make it all matt white, and can just wash it off easily :P. Snow in a can. I must admit i cant see the vision with this so far lol. I wish you all the best and know your make something awesome, you always pull it off. Could you do something with the colour changing glass maybe? The stuff you put a current to and it goes clear, no current and it goes solid? They use it to tint windows im not sure if you could get exact colour would work if you had a gloss black car.
Good to see the use of scanning, 3d modelling etc. 🙂 Spray foam/aerosol foam is not dimensionally stable and should not be used when making GRP parts. Also, if the surface of the plug is body filler (bondo) the GRP mould won't release cleanly even if the plug is waxed and polished. Go to a GRP supplies store (ask for advice) and buy suitable materials.
I figured it out. Hood scoop from a Subaru STI, headlights will go in the intake vents on the bumper and the original headlights will only be DRLs. Fender vents from a Porsche GT3 RS. This could be the ultimate Frankenstein car and it would be siiiiiick
What about a perforated vinyl wrap? build the part with the Lens cover out of a Clear acrylic and then cover it with a perforated vinyl...the type of thing that you see on commercial vehicles and buses, where there's art on the outside, but can still see out through it.
One of the last og car TH-cam channels I still watch, not only because you like 10 min from me but because it’s awesome watching someone create and build something that isn’t mainstream always been my thing and always has been very inspirational to create my own unique builds
Hey Chris, if you print with ABS and need a glue. Try Oatey Extra Special Medium Black ABS Cement. I've used it to put together broken parts to measure for recreating in 3D printing. I've had parts crack again, but not where glued. This stuff is strong. It can be found at the hardware store, in plumbing.
from what I heard plasti dip is pretty good to spray items with. you can even use multiple colors which would make it more visible in the scan. I have been meaning to try it.
just an idea, the version without the headlight covers will be whats used the most from what im guessing. would it be possible, to just run that pannel but on the headlights themselfs have a dot fade vinal put on them? yes it will reduce light output slightly but if the right fade was used it would keep the astetics whilst only reducing the light output by aprox 10% ish keeping the look and the praticacality of the lights. then during shows u put the pannel back on
Funny thing tho, some weeks back I remember seeing a random inatagram post of a guy who made headlight cover lenses for his BRZ based on the Prius, and I remember thinking "hey, it is like what Chris is doing, except that he will be using real Priuses lights". Who woulda thought that in the end he was doing exactly whats in the render. Honestly thou, you should just build the cover lenses as an hood extension, graft it on the hood itself so it will never fly as you drive the car and you'll never have to worry about putting on/taking it off. You can add some projector lights hidden on the vent space, as many have commented here already, it would look better as a more permanent version.
Suggestion: add some old-school flair and put the driving lights in the grille opening, or "mouth". Best examples would be some of the classic Shelby GT500s from the late '60s and early '70s, the Aston-Martin V8 Volante that Timothy Dalton drove in "The Living Daylights", and...I think some of the slant-nosed Porsche 911 racing cars had their lighting in the front fascia, but not in the grille opening itself... Bonus points if you can get round lamps with the "angel eyes" amber rings around the circumference for turn signals.
The BRZ/ GT86 in 2012 when the GT86 was released I was lucky enough to be invited by Toyota GB for the launch weekend and how to play in the car park testing the rear wheel drive facilities!!!
Hmmm..not sure if I’m ahead of myself or not but for the next build maybe inspired by vintage broncos?? Would definitely inspire me to build one at home 😅
I've been following this channel since the first BRZ build and I genuinely think this is one of my favourite episodes ever. I loved the explanation of what your trying to achieve.
That looks great. make the cover hydraulic. slide it out and you have a spoiler like the Lamborghini from the movie cannonball run. That woud be stunning.
I think those little vertical vents on either side of the main vent would be an AWESOME housing for both a set of headlights and fog/running lights below them. Like |8| |8| Or, I don’t see why you couldn’t just connect the line through the crevice at the bottom with some tastefully hidden LEDs like a light bar Both would be pretty cyberpunk
i think you’re heading in the right direction with the headlights, if anything you can place headlights within the front grille or something, but the idea of having two interchangeable pieces is also very smart
Just a thought. Run just the led strips on the sides to get the look your going for and build your projectors into the middle portion of the bumper. Would look weird with the headlights on but with just the running lights and no sight of projectors I think it would look 100% like the rendering
Great video as always, but as an idea remove the glass from the headlights and paint out the required section with black paint or suitable alternative and then install 2 lights (headlights) behind the grill vents either side of the main vent on the front of the car. Just a suggestion
Yeah or even cut out that entire centre section. If he can and alternative option for the headlights by putting them into the vents. Then just leave the glass in the headlights over the DRLs and fill in the centre section with the white. That way it'll be flush with the headlights.
When cutting composites you can have a 2nd set of hands running a vacuum to pull in as much of the dust as possible. You still need a mask but at least get less stuff in the air.
If you keep that part where you mask off the headlight black, that just looks like the new Ferrari design language of the blade over there. I don't like it on a Ferrari, but I think that will look kind of cool on a BRZ
At 28:03 the two little notches that were filled in would look very aggressive styled as vents or nostrils. Basically, little body line pleasing square-ish velocity stacks , similar to intake ducts .
I think you should build a projector housing inside of one of the vents! like the hyundai kona does, that way you could retain the beauty of your work with the headlight cover piece at all times instead of having to put it on and off when you want it to look right
Well there's a phrase I never thought I would hear... "Prius lights make it look more aggressive"
The Prius is just a really nice designed car. Too bad it's a Prius.

just an idea, the version without the headlight covers will be whats used the most from what im guessing. would it be possible, to just run that pannel but on the headlights themselfs have a dot fade vinal put on them? yes it will reduce light output slightly but if the right fade was used it would keep the astetics whilst only reducing the light output by aprox 10% ish keeping the look and the praticacality of the lights. then during shows u put the pannel back on
Funny thing tho, some weeks back I remember seeing a random inatagram post of a guy who made headlight cover lenses for his BRZ based on the Prius, and I remember thinking "hey, it is like what Chris is doing, except that he will be using real Priuses lights".
Yamaha r1 2019 or so headlights can fit neatly in the body, air inlets area without being seen or changing any lines. But you will have lights.
If the full center cover of the headlights could popup a little and show a led beam bar, it would be crazy
Glad you’re back at it after the holidays, i started to meeeeees you guys. 🤭🍻🍻🥃🥃
Do a "global Marker" scan, bevor the Laser Scan, helps a lot with tracking 👍👍
I'm lovin this! Feels like we're back to the good ol days
Thanks for sharing and taking us along
It’s gonna look good. Maybe bring the hood line down over the headlights more to even out the reveal
Would definitely inspire me to build one at home 😅
you are more an artist than an engineer,. that's awesome to see, stick to it. it's gonna be great.

Always awesome content! Thank you Chris and good luck in the future! 👍
I think those little vertical vents on either side of the main vent would be an AWESOME housing for both a set of headlights and fog/running lights below them. Like |8| |8|
Or, I don’t see why you couldn’t just connect the line through the crevice at the bottom with some tastefully hidden LEDs like a light bar
Both would be pretty cyberpunk
i think you’re heading in the right direction with the headlights, if anything you can place headlights within the front grille or something, but the idea of having two interchangeable pieces is also very smart
I personally liked the render with the Prius headlights you were working on.
Just put black tint over the center of the head light so it will look like the rendering and you still have headlights when you need them.
If you put the dots on blue painters tape, it's easier to remove them and can be reused again
Detachable rally lights for when you need to drive at night 👀
Just a thought. Run just the led strips on the sides to get the look your going for and build your projectors into the middle portion of the bumper. Would look weird with the headlights on but with just the running lights and no sight of projectors I think it would look 100% like the rendering
looking at jigsaw now the only thing I would change is to chop the top to be more speedsterish looking
Thinking about it a little more, you could put removable headlights in the vents, so display without and install when needed
Would be cool for the headlight cover to retract towards the center. Maybe build lenses that recess and allow the cover to sit flush as well
You could do like they do on the Jeep Cherokee and the Nissan Murano and mount the actual headlights lower within the grille, or in the vent area.
That render is DOPE! I hope you can make it!
I really like how this is going
nice this brings me back to the ole celica headlights on sw20's
I think you should build a projector housing inside of one of the vents! like the hyundai kona does, that way you could retain the beauty of your work with the headlight cover piece at all times instead of having to put it on and off when you want it to look right
Looks really cool ❤
Personally hate lights that are just lines but still love to see the process of you making it!
Great work! It's looking awesome. God bless
