I knew it, only because I've seen it before. The car I fixed was at 3 other shops and then I fixed it, I only have a cheap 2 channel scope but it was enough to see the cam to crank signal was off(wish I had the ats escope, love watching Bernies videos) it was a Subaru Impreza but has the same basic setup with the tone ring behind the flywheel.
This is a master at work. I am shaking my head in disbelief on how you were able to pinpoint exactly what was wrong with the car. It would be nice to hear what the customer said when you fixed the problem. Anyways, I am definitely subscribing
Man, wish you’d have reached out, have a BRZ FA20 on the engine stand right now, could’ve definitely helped you on this one, at least sent ya a picture of the crank tone ring. Lol
I had issues with my old Kia Picanto 1.1. The engine suddenly stopped running. I started diagnosing the issue and tried to resolve it until I found that the cambelt sensor crankcase metal spokes had a few bends because a little stone had gone into the cambelt cover! Great video.
Have to say that was very cool that you went through procedures to find out exactly what was wrong. Also very nice to have another engine of that sort down at your other shop. Everything worked out for the good, meant to be. You did great work on that one sir congratulations. Nice job guys!
I am not an auto mechanic, but I really enjoyed watching this video to the end. What a great demonstration of troubleshooting a very difficult problem. You guys are true experts. If I lived in your state I wouldn’t hesitate to bring my vehicles to your shop.
Another great lesson. Yes, it can be a pain to find a known good. I run into as well. One thing I did want to point out is that after the code clear those that came back were permanent codes, not current or history. So those are mode 10 codes you can't and won't clear until whatever the drive cycle may be until the PCM clears them itself. If I'm wrong let me know.
And people ask why we end up charging more than $125 to $200. On a consecutive diagnosis. Like I know for sure, you definitely charged your customer more than $200 bucks for your thorough diagnosis. Bet that autozone scanner can't tell them that tone wheel is in the wrong position 😂
Kicked a tech off a job when he was hammering a flywheel on with an impact because it wouldn’t go. Alignment dowel stuck out 1/2” and it wasn’t even close. Luckily he didn’t wreck the crank. I didn’t let him work on anything by himself again. He finally quit. Boss wouldn’t let him go. He was only there a few weeks.
A friend of mine has a Nissan Murano that a mechanic installed a used engine on also. That engine will not start unless he sprays carb cleaner. I put a scope on the crank sensor and there is a signal, but the voltage is at 8 volts. The service manual says it should be at around 1.6 at idle. We're loading a new crank sensor into the cannon 🤞
Fantastic, just fantastic, very good find and very good video and hopeful a very happy customer, thanks for the upload I really enjoyed this upload, and I am looking out for the next video.thanks. p.s I am ready to use some good money on an oscilloscope can anyone suggest one, do I buy one to pc, or do I buy one too my launch tab7(I am a newbie one scoop) is 4 channels enough? And what brand would you good people recommend.
What was the guy who installed the flex plate thinking (or was he)? If you are savvy enough to change an engine you should know that the flex plate has to be indexed correctly.
I had something similar. Engine was replaced and would not start. It ended up being the crank signal came from the teeth on the harmonic balancer were different than the original one that came off of the truck.
Just curious why you went after fuel instead of spark first if you added fuel and it didn't at least try to start. Seems like spark would be more likely than fuel. 14 minutes in and that just popped in my head. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos.
That goes to show that people who maybe shouldn’t even attempt to tackle such a big job get encouraged to do so anyway by some TH-camrs who make something like this easier than it is or people in the forums saying “just do it yourself, there are many videos out there”. There is a reason why a shop with technicians that have 20+ years experience charge what they charge. So it’s not messed up the first time around and you don’t have to backpaddle.
Is the other way to see it if you had a known good in cylinder capture, compare that too a known good cam crank; The in cylinder would be the same but the cam crank off.
I would say it’s probably because a lot of techs take what the scan tool says to literally and go down a rabbit hole. I use to be the same way. With a decent amount of knowledge you can figure out what’s wrong with most concerns without it. But it is a great tool to have. Just my thoughts
@@gamestava I agree with you that there's a lot of tech's who base their diagnosis solely off dtc's and data using a scan tool but that's not what will lead you down a rabbit hole. lacking experience on operations /functions of the scan tool along with the knowledge to read and understand what data you are collecting. What I don't agree with is scan tool data causing tech's to misdiagnos faults within a CAN system but won't with out a scan tool. Still trying to figure out all the comments about not needing a scan tool and your a shitty tech if you do....
I have a vvt a exhaust camshaft end position not reached/vanos inlet camshaft Tight or jammed on a 2002 330ci BMW that I did a timing chain on cause of other reasons.😊 lordy lordy 😊😅😂
Karl Childers I know a few people who hate Billy Bob Thornton and they refuse to watch that movie. I've insisted that they are missing out but they are just too stubborn. :)
Your channel is so much better when you lose some of the silliness and just do diagnostics. This is reminiscent of PHAD that had a Jetta TDI with a similar issue. Turns out the notch that is read by the crank sensor is incorporated in the rear main seal, so you have to use a special tool to align the seal with the end of the crank.
What is a bit disconcerting: these cars are clearly manufactured to be over engineered, and to complicated to be diagnosed by the majority of people; including a good percentage of automotive technicians: save for the few techs that have the skill set of this channel and South Main. Added to that, the materials being used to manufacture are yearly becoming inferior, i.e. plastic where a metal apertenance should be utilized. An extreme amount of expensive diagnostic equipment must be acquired to hopefully be successful, and from perusing yt channels that is not always the case and does not guarantee success. Of course, all by design for the sole purpose of increasing profits for NGO's without any regard for the amount of finite resources currently being depleted from planet earth. A dysfunctional, and unsustainable proposition. It's a good thing the words of Christ Jesus in the Bible are faithful and true: notable are His promises of the soon to be Kingdom of God prophecies that will be preceded by great tribulation for all the inhabitants of planet earth. Taking into consideration the current events the world is experiencing, it seems that our appointed time is near.
Wow some people are not very smart. why would you call a professional business that gets paid to repair cars and ask stupid questions about buying cars how to repair what tools to buy? This is really stupid ignorant and inconsiderate. Somebody had to say it.
If you’re not part of the TH-cam diagnostic network clique these people simply ignore you . I’ve reached out about finding someone who’s doing diagnostics in my area and it’s been complete silence. Frustrating finding professionals when you’re outside their network.
I’m sorry you feel that way Paul. That’s simply not the case though. We get hundreds of messages/emails every day and we try to respond to everyone we can. We also get people constantly calling the shop for repair advice, shop advice, tool advice, car shopping advice, etc. This channel is literally me and my dad. We try to respond to as many people as we can. I’ve seen my dad have 30 minute conversations with people asking about scopes trying to help them out. At the end of the day. We are two guys who are grateful so many people want to pick our brains, but there’s only so much time in a day. We are running a business, trying to get content filmed and edited, and we both have families (my 4th child is on the way). If you shoot me an email about what you’re needing help and your phone number, I’ll give you a call and try to help. Thanks for expressing your concern! -S3
I think I understand what you're talking about but I'm not sure. I have said before that none of the good TH-cam auto diag people are in my area and I wished they could network with shops in other areas to get an idea who is good in these other places and refer people accordingly. Unfortunately it takes even more time out of their day to add that service for essentially no compensation. I think it's going to have to come from the viewer side. I know a guy in my area (Sacramento) who has done me right on many occasions but I can't vouch for other people's experiences but I will happily share if anyone around here asks.
The fact that someone would expect something like that from a shop owner whose business is to repairs cars and is kind enough to offer good information and teachings at no charge to the viewer is the highest form of entitlement I have seen in a while. Just wow!
I appreciate all of your videos. You guys are great. It's allot of work producing content. I recommend turning off the comments because it takes more time out of your lives to reply to them. Plus, sometimes you get the keyboard warriors who soil their diapers when they don't get what they want.
I knew it, only because I've seen it before. flywheel misaligned excellent diagnosis Sherwood keep those videos coming
Excellent video, the power of a scope! And to know how to read it correctly! Totally awesome.
I had issues with my old Kia Picanto 1.1. The engine suddenly stopped running. I started diagnosing the issue and tried to resolve it until I found that the cambelt sensor crankcase metal spokes had a few bends because a little stone had gone into the cambelt cover! Great video.
YOU FATHER AND SON ARE GREAT TEACHERS❤
Have to say that was very cool that you went through procedures to find out exactly what was wrong. Also very nice to have another engine of that sort down at your other shop. Everything worked out for the good, meant to be. You did great work on that one sir congratulations. Nice job guys!
You can decipher what the correct wave form should look like based on the layout of the reluctor wheel
Nice Find. Got to love the power of a scope.
Amazing, great diagnosis Sherwood. Yes, very enjoyable.
great video .. nice work RAS...EXCELLENT.. thanks awesome
Tremendous diagnostic logic and tenacity ! Like a shark that smells blood - On It !! 👊🏼 🔥 🦈
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
I am not an auto mechanic, but I really enjoyed watching this video to the end. What a great demonstration of troubleshooting a very difficult problem. You guys are true experts. If I lived in your state I wouldn’t hesitate to bring my vehicles to your shop.
Good deal ! Nice job and it’s nice to lay your finger on the exact problem
really good job, as you said , there are a lot of mechanics that wouldn't be able to fix this without the right tools. 👍
Great diagnosis guys. Love your videos, Mechanic in New Zealand here.
Excellent!
Above and beyond!

Professional diagnosis. If there are more videos like this, I would love to see them thanks
Great job My friend. I love how you diagnose the hard jobs.
Thank you for sharing what you are thinking! This helps with all troubleshooting!
Very well done sir.
Crazy diagnosis! Thanks for sharing.
Great diag and case study. Keep them coming.
Awesome find and great video!
Great detective work and having faith in your tools man💪👊
Appreciate it!
That. Was good buddy
Great find. Kind of like a Nissan with the indexed flywheel. Stinks you had to scour the internet for a pic of the tone wheel.
Great video. But why one of the camshaft signals was upside down?
Really enjoyed this one!
Great video, camera work and editing is evolving :) Keep up the great work!
Sherwood is a good tech I learn lots from him and support his channel.
From Alberta Canada
Great job that was a fun one 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting to see that it didn't throw a code for crank to cam correlation. And good call not going down the path of checking signals to the ECU.
That was awesome.. more please 👊🏻
More incoming! 👍
EXCELLENT! Diag!
Excellent work Sherwood!
Great video, thanks
This was awesome.
good job!!
Damn…. YOU ARE GREAT! FANTASTIC AS USUAL! Thank you!!
Amazing job! 🌟

Amazing video, new subscriber! Thanks
It would appear that Subaru does not use one bolt hole slightly offset to keep this from happening.
good one tks
Fantastic, just fantastic, very good find and very good video and hopeful a very happy customer, thanks for the upload I really enjoyed this upload, and I am looking out for the next video.thanks.

Excellent
Check for oil. No oil pressure, no start
That was awsome. Off ebay pictures.❤
What was the guy who installed the flex plate thinking (or was he)? If you are savvy enough to change an engine you should know that the flex plate has to be indexed correctly.
Holy crap at 41:35
That’s amazing!!
Your videos are great!
I had something similar. Engine was replaced and would not start. It ended up being the crank signal came from the teeth on the harmonic balancer were different than the original one that came off of the truck.
I'm curious if you guys thought about reaching out to Mr. Subaru for his thoughts.
Just curious why you went after fuel instead of spark first if you added fuel and it didn't at least try to start. Seems like spark would be more likely than fuel. 14 minutes in and that just popped in my head. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos.
Any news on that Eric O collab? 😆😆
Not likely considering one lives in upstate NY and the other in southern Georgia. 1000s of miles away.
@omarpulido8502 Last time I checked it wasn't up to you
They talk a lot on phone so I’m sure it’ll happen at some point! -S3
Am i correct in the maf sensor was before the spot you put the "gas" in to start? Wouldn't that maybe have a issue? Thank you im learning
Waiting for the good oscilloscope graph
I was wondering what the MAF was doing with the big hole in the snorkel. No tach, no spark, no fuel.
Such a simple mistake could lead many to very very deep rabbit hole :)
At 20:43 I didn't notice a crank signal. Still watching the entire video, at this point I'm still unsure.😅
why do modern steering wheel blister? Mine has lost a chunk or two from the wheel.
why didn't you put a scanner on it first thing
That goes to show that people who maybe shouldn’t even attempt to tackle such a big job get encouraged to do so anyway by some TH-camrs who make something like this easier than it is or people in the forums saying “just do it yourself, there are many videos out there”. Just curious why you wouldn't start by plugging in a scan tool just to see of all the modules are online and talking?
We may do a video addressing this very good question! Hard to pack it all in a comment. Great question and he will answer it in a future video! 👍

What’s with the f350 that hasn’t moved in a long time?
He did a short about it a few days ago. It's a no pay situation - I think it's a warranty insurance company not paying but don't hold me to that ..:
❤
Extra Holy crap at 45:07 😂😂😂
Curious question, but what does the tattoo on your right bicep say Sherwood? "Let y.... " ???
9/10 times ask yourself what did the customer possibly do or not do. In that situation.
"It ain't got no gas in it"

Always check the engine oil level before trying to start a customer car??

auto fr-s, thats the 1st issue lol
I’ve seen these a lot of times and it’s the module needs to be flashed to the engine
🤦 there has never been a single time in the history of automotive repair, that an engine needs to be programmed
