      Hello, i am from Chile, y just enjoy your videos, your beautiful natural garden. I am trying to grow a natural garden too, but I live in a dry climate. How is your climate? How old is your garden? Thank you for sharing it.

    • @perennial-garden
      @perennial-garden  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@veronicavenegas7662 We moved into this house in 2018 -- and we started the garden slowly from there. Some of the flower beds are only 1 year old tho... we removed the grass lawn just last year.
      Our climate is quite wet -- we're on the east coast of Denmark. It's like a zone 8a (if you use the USDA gardening zones) :)

It works no matter how tall the plant, I staked milkweed which is almost 6 feet high. 🙂 I don’t remove Hosta flower stalks, the hummingbirds visit them, and Monarda too, no hummingbirds in Denmark, I know ☺but the Hostas set seed as well and I find Hosta seedlings every spring. 🌱

    Oh MG! Those plants you got from Mr. Claus Dalby is just "Wow"! It looks great in your beautiful garden. Slugs are going to lay eggs soon, so now I'm also on Easter Egg Hunt. hahahaha I tell you, we still got 20.000 more out there, but we continue our battle with the help of Ferramol. I want copper all around the flowerbeds. lol I think there's a difference between living in a town, and living out in "Bondeland", next to wheat fields. If we don't kill them, they will take over our garden, and we will end up in a madhouse.
    I will follow your advice, and not put my poor seedlings out in wind, rain, and sun. Hahahaha (I felt like a fool, wasted a lot of time, and had to start all over, so I'm still working on that timing business, so that there's always flowers to look at.) That's when I look at your garden, and joy fills my tortured soul.
    I couldn't stop laughing, when you stood on the pavement. I really felt so excited: "Oh, now I'm going to see your beautiful front garden!" I should've known better, knowing Fredericia a little. Love what you did in your front garden, anyway! Keep up the good works, guys, you're gonna end up with the Créme de la Créme, meaning Claus Dalby. Nice.

    Great footage of all those flowers. I noticed 2 of particular interest and would like to ask when and how best to sow the seeds of : Daucus carota Dara (Wild Carrot) and Verbena hastata? I don't have a greenhouse. Much appreciated.

    • @perennial-garden
      @perennial-garden  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for writing (and watching!)
      For Daucus carota 'Dara' (Wild Carrot), you have two options for sowing: spring and fall. In early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked, scatter the seeds directly in your garden. Alternatively, you can sow the seeds in late fall for germination the following spring. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Scatter the seeds thinly on the soil surface, lightly press them into the soil or cover them with a very thin layer of soil, about 1/8 inch, since Wild Carrot seeds need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to about 6-8 inches apart.
      For Verbena hastata, you can start the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date or sow directly in the garden after the last frost. Seeds benefit from cold stratification, so place them in a damp paper towel, put it in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for 4-6 weeks. (That's what we use our glasshouse for... we get to skip the refridgerator :) )
      After stratification, sow the seeds in seed trays or small pots. Press them lightly into the soil, and cover with a very thin layer of soil. Place the trays in a warm, bright location, like a sunny windowsill, and keep the soil consistently moist. Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden.
      If you prefer direct sowing, choose a sunny to partly shady spot with well-drained soil. Scatter the seeds on the soil surface, lightly press them in, and cover with a very thin layer of soil since Verbena hastata seeds also need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, then thin the seedlings once they are large enough to handle.
      I hope that makes sense! Let me know if you can understand my rambilngs! haha

Mango Madness, American Dawn, David Howard, French can-can, all the cafe au lait series and also Bishop's Children. We have had a real problem with slugs here in England too. The snail frame is a great product. can't seem to buy it heer in England. I need to devise a system. Love your adhlia support system- what a great idea. Thank you for sharing. I adore Hydrangeas. I have grown lots from cuttings. I particularly like white ones. I have many growing in pots. Gorgeous Thalictrum. So dainty. I also grew my Echinacea from seed. Very easy way to get lots of plants 🙂 How long does Liatris take to flower when growing from seed please? Too bad that you can't find that snail frame in England... we believe that it really has helped us a lot.
      As for liatris... when growing it from seed, it typically takes about 2 to 3 years to flower. The first year is mainly focused on establishing the root system and developing the plant's foliage. Flowering generally occurs in the second or third year, with the plant producing its tall, spiky blooms.

I love all the plants in your garden. I hesitate to write the following, but will do it as something to think about. Many years ago I had English Ivy like you have growing on a 6 foot wooden fence in my back yard. That ended up being a mistake. The ivy weighted down the fence and almost ruined the top of the fence boards. We removed all the ivy to save the fence. The fence is still in place and the boards have not been removed, but the fence is a lot less strong that when it was installed long ago and the problem came from letting the ivy grow up on the fence. I know you enjoy the look of the ivy on the fence and it does provide a lot of privacy. Just saying what a 75 yo gardener went through with growing ivy on a fence. I have way too much ground cover here, including English Ivy, but it is OK because it does the job of covering large areas of ground, eliminating weeds and cuts down mowing the grass..

    • @perennial-garden
      @perennial-garden  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s really good to know!
      The ivy on that fence was planted in 1996 by the neighbor and the previous house owner (our house).
      When we moved in, we discovered, as you said, about the weight of it and how it has moved the fence. We’ve had to fix parts of it (on the ends) already.
      It is beautiful - but we wouldn’t choose it ourselves. Luckily, we just “inherited” it. 😅 And we love advice from a 75 year old gardener! What great experience you have to offer. Thank you for sharing ❤️

      I'm glad you are receptive to what I wrote. If I could do it again the ivy would have never been allowed to crawl over and cover my wooden fence. Hi guys, greetings from the West Midlands in the UK, loving the videos👍🏻 those Heliopsis Burning Hearts look great, I love the bright coloured flowers against the dark foliage, a bit like some of the dark leaved dahlias. In the end I’ve ordered Burning Hearts and Bleeding Hearts seeds cos I like to grow stuff from seed and it helps to keep the costs down! How would you go about sowing these? I’m not sure if I should plant the seeds now or maybe try the winter sowing method you did a video about recently?

      The bleeding hearts (Dicentra) seeds typically require cold stratification to break dormancy and germinate successfully. This process mimics the natural cold period that seeds would experience outdoors during winter. So winter sowing would be ideal for them. (Here's how we winter sow ours: th-cam.com/video/gXLYLjyvZ9E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ErCi64xja8r2SsY9 )
      For the Heliopsis, they don't need the cold to germinate, so you could sow them now, in the winter, or wait until the spring :)
