Logitech G923 vs. Thrustmaster T248: Which is the Better Wheel in 2023?

  • The entry level in simracing has the most important job. It needs to provide competent equipment set at a decent entry price. Decent all things considered because the chip shortage has been a crunch. They need to provide all the features, like force feedback, a good deal of buttons, console compatibility and a decent enough set that lasts years. And with that the two to look at, at this moment are the Logitech G923 and the Thrustmaster T248.

      If I was new to sim racing I would go for the Thrustmaster. For console gamers you have more options with Thrustmaster. You can buy into the eco system get the TH8A, TSSH+, T-LCM's and then when you outgrow the T248 you can take all those accessories with you to your next Thrustmaster wheelbase. If you only play on PC of course this makes no difference as you can use any gear you want with the Logitech or Thrustmaster.

    Playing on a v9 taught me something i never thought i'd learn. While its important to have ffb, having pedals that give you confidence makes world of difference in consistency. I could catch the slide visually but could never consistenly apply the correct pedal inputs to balance the car. Thanks for the comparison!

    Owning a g923 myself,I think the best point of it rn (if the prices are exactly the same for both) is the modding scene. There will be available a plethora of mods that can change the experience of the wheel even for cheap,like magnetic paddles,brake mods and etc. Since the form factor is just so old and stablished.

    There is one downside to the G923 pedals, and that's that you cant use them up against a wall very well. The cable gets trapped between the wall and the base, and the back of the unit is convex so it can move when you press the accelerator, then again when you press the clutch or brake.
    I haven't used the TM pedals so couldn't comment on them.

    RC, do you think there will be any significant revisions to the T248 FFB software in the future (since it is still a comparatively new product)? That lack of feeling in the rear of the car would be really concerning to me as someone who prefers setups with a car that oversteers on the limit, but I have a feeling that the T248's limitation could be overcome with custom FFB files, further tweaking, etc.

    • @karlsmith8113
      @karlsmith8113 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TM recently updated the firmware of their wheels so some will now have a boost mode option in the settings, unsure exactly how much extra but some are saying it improves the strength and detail on TM wheels. I'm not sure for the T248 but it works amazingly well with the T300 and feels much more detailed.

  • @Aero_TV
    @Aero_TV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Having bought the T248 a few months ago, I definitely understand what you mean with "not feeling the rear" - I do league racing in F1 2021 and I have suffered from this ever since I switched from a controller to the T248 as my first wheel. I am not able to extract more laptime out of my car than what I am able to feel and that is a reality with this wheel. The lack of feeling on the rear of the car seems to be less problematic on ACC for example but it's still something present. Apart from that and the loudness from the Paddle Shifters, everything is awesome with this wheel :) happy to not have to return my wheel 2 months after buying it due to sensor problems as the Logitech buyers unfortunately have to do often.
    I advise everyone that owns a T248 to crank up the Strenght to a high level (80%) on the wheel itself (and reduce to 60-80% ingame, depending on the title) to counter the "ghost rear" effect a bit and turn off Dampening in the software (type "Control Panel" on Windows Search bar and a wheel icon should come up).

    After owning both I think the t248 has the better base but the g923 has the better wheel imo. The g923 also integrates better with the Ps5 as it replaces the controller. It will turn ps5 on by pressing the ps button. The t248 you still need to use the controller. The brake pedal is better on the t248 but but you need to mount the pedals on a stand or rig to keep them in place. G923 has the carpet grippers built in so you don’t need a stand/rig. For me, price being the same I would choose the g923 or spend more on a direct drive wheel

I use a PC so I didn't get the $200 shifter from them, I saved a fortune and got the hugely popular 7+R ebay Chinese shifter, all metal and shifts with authority. I added the also hugely popular ebay Chinese handbrake as well keeping my costs to a minimum and allowing me to have fun on a budget. I run a logitech g29 with a thrustmaster shifter only because with the thurstmaster shifter you get what you pay for, way better feel not feeling plastic, plus the thrustmaster shifter runs of magnets so it will never wear down. I will try it out at some point, but I am waiting until they make the Driving Miss Daisy game as that is more my speed. However, one thing that I notice is that none of the videos mention anything about additional products such as the gear stick, but I guess I am going to have to find out the hard way for myself. A very big negative, but I do not watch all the way through, so it might have been mentioned, but I just wish youtubers would do chapters and just say which one is the best at the start of the video and then let the viewer to decide if they want to watch the rest of the video or not.

    Personally, I would say the T300 RS would be a better buy on this level of beginner wheel bases. However, I wouldn't recommend any of them. After a couple of months, people *usually* start craving more power, and feedback.
    Right now, these plastic belt driven wheel bases are getting phased out, and a lot more companies are coming out with smaller direct drive wheel bases.
    Sadly, as of right now Fanatec is the only company that is offering a plug-and-play DD system to both Console, and PC. I'm not a fan of that company, but it's the best bet for future proofing one's investment. If money is an issue, wait a little bit longer to save more money.

    Sure if you want to throw an extra 100 dollars out the window for the 923. Its a gimmick from Logitech. How many game support this new true force? The same number the g923 launched with not to mention the games supported are not the most note worthy. Go with the G920 and save a lot of cash or thrustmaster if your budget allows.

So am happy with less power for reliability aswell as the really nice ffb feel from the 923....there is something very unique feeling with the logitech gear regardless of it being outdated tech. Going to get trufebrake mode soon so should still do the job. Also here in South Africa the thrustmaster is about R3000 rand more..... I only paid 5000 for my 923. yeah, thats definetly the trade off. I've tried g29 and t150 (pro).
      I'd chose t150 any day because of superior pedals and better ffb, while being cheaper. But logitech's wheels are as you say more reliable. Older g29's are in better shape than older t150's. And logitech has better materials, also a bit less noisy. Still, I think it's too much of a sacrifice on the ffb for me, even a bit on smoothness.

    Avoid the Logitech wheel. The software hardly works which means you can spend 20-40 min everytime you want to race screwing with the program to get it to recognize the wheel. The software causes stutters in multiple sims (Codemasters and WRC games mostly). Avoid it at all costs. Look at the Thrustmaster offerings. In all fairness, the G series wheels do feel the best in hand with a nice leather wrap but the downsides make it unusable.

    In fact, literally the ONLY reasons I can think of for why you'd think Logitech's G923 has the higher clarity/fidelity, aka "resolution" of force feedback vs Thrustmaster's T248 are these two. 🤷 ↓
    1. Because you tested w/ ACC, which is one of the ONLY "TrueForce" compatible games in existence. (Aka, it's one of literally like THREE total games which can use the standard video game controller-esque "TrueForce" rumble motors in the G923 for vibration effects... well, at least until those rumble motors seemingly WITHOUT FAIL end up breaking & failing and from then on sounding & feeling like absolute ASS, that is. 🤷)
    2. Because you had to T248's force feedback settings set incorrectly. Aka, either it wasn't actually maxed out at 100% and/or arguably MORE importantly/likely, you had the feedback style preset set to the arguably worst "FFB1" stock default instead of the by FAR most detailed "FFB3" setting that you actually should have been using!!!

    • @randomcallsign
      @randomcallsign  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, thanks for the input. You seem rather worked out and aggressive about this with no reason whatsoever
      1 - In this video only ACC is checked as a matter of comparison, though in the review just for T248 done a couple of weeks before and took about a month to do, multiple other titles are checked, AC, GTSport, ACC and AMS2.
      2 - The G923 felt always better even in the titles outside trueforce.
      3 - You have a misunderstanding of what the FFB settings are. FFB1 isn't "stock", its the linear torque curve setting. FFB3 makes all canned effects present and muddies the overall experience. It's an option, that's about it. FFB3 doesn't eliminate the slow steering rack nor the lack of back-end feel that other users have reported including in this same video.
      Have a nice day

  • @Cooe.
    @Cooe. 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You are literally the ONLY PERSON I've yet heard who has used both wheels claim that the force feedback "fidelity/resolution" is HIGHER with the much lower power, "GEAR ONLY" motor in the G923 when compared the significantly higher power & physically smoother feeling wheel to turn "gear + belt hybrid" motor in Thrustmaster's T248... 🤦😑
    I've ALSO personally used both wheels before, and couldn't POSSIBLY DISAGREE WITH YOU MORE!!!
    IMO in my hands on experience, the ONLY WAY that the G923 actually FUNCTIONS better than the T248 is in terms of their max motor driven wheel spin speed, where Logi is a noticeable bit faster.
    But in LITERALLY EVERY OTHER WAY POSSIBLE related to a FFB wheel & pedal set's actual core function/functionality (aka Logi's better external wheel materials quality is irrelevant here), the T248 is anywhere from "moderately better" to "ABSOLUTELY FUCKING STRATOSPHERICALLY AHEAD"!!!
