I used to do sim racing many years ago, but modern simming requires a LOT of time if you want to be competitive.
Exactly. The sim rig I'm building will be used for both racing and flying, but I don't want to do anything competitive. I just want to drive and fly around like a maniac, lol. I'm hoping Beam NG turns out to be as much fun as it looks like it is.
Regarding #5, imo you should also have mentioned desk setups and not only rigs. Assuming someone starts from 0, without a pc, desk, monitors, ok, you of course need all that stuff, but I could imagine most people who start sim racing already have played other games, so already have a "gaming space" they could also turn into a desk setup for sim racing. Maybe could have been mentioned as the "tight on space" variant. Overall good video tho
Getting into sim racing does not need to be that expensive. I spent 100€ on second hand g29 setup (wheel, pedals, shifter) and 4€ on asetto corsa from kinguin. Totally happy learning the basics with this setup and trying out if this is something I want to invest more time and money into. If I notice my self not enjoying the experience I can just resell the setup with little to no money lost.
Also this guy talk about more than just the wheel and game, the console or pc, the rig the wheel and pedals attach to, a good monitor or tv, hell I’d even go more to say shoes and gloves, beginners with a Logitech wheel and cheap game and cheap Xbox and cheap tv and a cheap second hand play seat will set you all together back like 700
I started sim racing last December.on an XBox one x. With a Thrustmaster TX/T300 with basic pedals. Bolted to a cheap eBay wheel stand. And an ikea chair. In front of my living room tv. That changed very quickly now I’m in for over £5k. Mid range PC,profile rig, proper bucket seat, 16nm DD wheel base. Load cell pedals. Sequential shifter hand break, haptic feed back in the seat etc. I’m totally addicted to it lol. Iv always loved motorsport, now I can kind of get a taste of what it like. Although sim racing can be approached with a small budget, and still be really fun. It can also get very expensive very fast. I’d say buy the best gear you can afford, and have fun. 👍🏻👍🏻
Rule of thumb, if you don't already have a PC don't go overboard on your rig. Fanatec DD Pro would be the highest I'd go if you don't plan on building a PC. It's also a good stepping stone just in case you do think about going the PC route in the future. All the things you buy for it will work with higher end products like the DD1/2.
sorry but just avoid fanatec in my opinion. awful customer service. you might be alright and the gear works out but they're known for not being entirely reliable
I agree with you. I bought a DD Pro and was very happy with it, but Fanatec's customer and after-sales experience was awful. I bought a Logitech G Pro as insurance (and relegated the Fanatec to my second rig). The two wheels have PC and console compatibility, and are therefore great choices for anyone dipping their toes into the direct drive market.
@@mannyfresh7065I love my Logi. It IS big, but it's not a problem for me, as I race in VR. The lack of other wheels and peripherals are also an issue for some, but again, it doesn't affect me. Trueforce is amazing, FFB is also fantastic. Pedals are good, but their adjustability is a very underrated feature. The DD Pro is also good, but a generation behind IMO, and enough has already been said about Fanatec's aftersales 'experience' already 😊
I bought a g920 just because of well how everybody hade one and says it’s a good entry wheel wich it definitely will do the job just the main thing I can recommend is to save a little bit more money get the cls dd ready to race bundle and slowly upgrade it with the loadcell kit and beter steering wheels and what ever you do don’t get the Logitech shifter the shh newt 2 is so much beter and isn’t that much more expinsive .
Yep that's what I've done with my new Moza rig well over a thousand dollars later I still need a new cockpit or stand the one I have it on now does not cut it but it's still works better than a g29
I don't agree on it being expensive, especially not being mentioned this often. It goes as far as you want and you can do it with a rather old PC and an old wheel setup at your desk. You make it sound extremely snobbish. I also have a trackday car, that costs me thousands a year in tyres, fuel, brakes, entry costs, maintenance. I have a decent PC and I have used 2 Logitech wheels over about 20 years. I now bought a Moza setup and rig, that still only set me back less than 2k. Thats 2 tyre changes and a brake job on my car (which is even on the cheap side of things). Entering a track day here costs a minimum of 200 Euros per event and most almost double that.
I just got the thrustmaster t128 and a steering wheel stand (no space for seat setup), as I'll be playing casually on ps5 and not too heavy sim racing (games like crew 2, nfs unbound/heat, grid legends, dirt 5 and some farming simulator).
I don't have much spare time or money, so I bought a used wheel with table clamp, and pedals with carpet spikes. I like the driving to be pretty realistic but get straight into racing without too much faffing about so simcade is ideal. I started on some old Gran Turismo games but found out that even a pathetic non-gaming PC can run old games like Assetto Corsa, Richard Burns Rally, Live For Speed etc. My FFB wheel must be about as basic as they get, but without ever having tried a direct drive etc, I am blissfully unaware of the difference.
Another tip is, If you have a bro (literal or close friend) lives close to you, share the expenses. And share the system. I bought PS5 with my brother by sharing ( since I'm only playing exclusives). And we just agreed upon buying a fanatec system. Since this is a hobby like mountain bike, trekking. I will not devote myself to any specific hobby. but we will just chill by playing Sim racing either his or mine house (max. 30 min. Distance). Another excuse for playing games like old times. That'll probably will change after we both marry though.😅 Aince then.. race is on.
As someone who likes playing gt7 its kinda annoying that there's no competition for the cheap console dd market. All we have is the csl dd. Moza would definitely make a decent bit more money if they added console compatibility since at that price range particularly gt7 compatibility is something people will consider.
@@neblolthecarnerdACC? AC? Project Cars 2? F1 2023? The upcoming WRC? I know a couple of the above aren't as good as their PC counterparts but hopefully some of those pique your interest. First three of the above dirt cheap too if you shop around.
Everything i have ive bought over years so it didnt really seem that expensive however thinking about it now i have spent a lot of money overall best advice really is just dont rush and buy it all at once aslong as you have your steering wheel everything else can be bought in time
This is a VERY expensive hobby...but listening to folks who actually know what they're doing (yes, even you Oscar 😂) can help quite a bit. I'm currently using my first DD wheel (I was a Thrustmaster T-300 guy for years), but I did it by being patient and waiting for the sale of the year: Fanatec CSL DD. I'm a PC racer, so the standard version was enough for me and I went for the BMW livery as it was as cheap as the standard wheel version. I use a cheap-ish Amazon steel wheel stand that folds up and that has a pretty cool attachment that allows for a racing/office chair to pop into it and hold it solid and it works great! This allows for a more compact setup which I need. It all works well together. I'm more into dirt rallying, and sometimes I just wanna have fun (Forza series for this old guy). Full on racing games, like AC, IRacing, etc. gives me hives sometimes...I actually hate not the games but too many of the folks who play them. Nothing ruins a game more than the other idiots who play it, for real. Great tips, Oscar, more folks need to know them BEFORE they buy a Logitech and curse it after using it for a few minutes 😂
expensive? i only spent £2000 for the whole lot and that includes load cell sprint pedels, Next level wheelstand 2, 15nm DD wheelbase with a GT/F1 wheel!
@@jonneymendoza debatable. Depends on what you consider normal income. Especially in other countries where income is lower. I don't know many adults myself that can drop 2k on a hobby. That much disposable income seems like a middle-upper middle class thing. Not to mention that I'd you don't have one you'll probably have to drop another 1-2k on a pc
Fanatec‘s customer service is „sheet“, but the items are great and user friendly. The entry costs for a fanatec setup is great. Just make sure you make some research before buy and upgrade. My recommendation: choose the prefered wheel you wish before you order!
I bought an entire set up after a life time of racing with a controller and I just use the set up to cruise on horizon because I am unable to race with a wheel, I'm actually quite alright with that, cruising horizon is like driving my real car which I do all the time
Space is a huge factor for me. I ended up getting a small heavy duty standing desk. A 34 inch ultra wide was the other good move for small space. Some people would end up with the desk set-up because they didnt want to spend the money on a rig. I didnt have a desk until I wanted to sim race. 😂
Things I wish I’d known: playing what is fun is way more important than playing what people consider the most realistic. I know there can be overlap for some people, but this isn’t always the case. I never would have bought a curved monitor for my rig if I’d experienced VR first. There’s really no comparison in terms of immersion, at least on my budget. I don’t have 20k to drop on a rig.
Your last point of space requirements is what is really crushing me at the moment. I purchased pretty high end controllers 15+ years ago. They’ve actually held up just fine to the present day but the wheel isn’t FFB and the manufacturer is no longer in business. “OK, I may have some money to upgrade so let’s look.” Every single modern pedal set that’s of moderately comparable quality to what I’m used to seems to require mounting in a rig. I do not have room for a rig or a wheel stand. I drive at my desk in my small office room. There is simply no floor space for a sim-specific installation. Period. I haven’t given up yet. But for the time being I’m feeling pretty crushed. It just more or less feels like I’m getting squeezed out of enjoying the hobby I’ve enjoyed for nearly two decades because…while I can afford the equipment…some of that equipment itself basically needs a house bigger than mine. Again, I’m not stating all this as facts or absolutes. It’s the impression I’m currently feeling while trying to figure out “where do I go from here” with equipment that is eventually going to need replacing. Absolutely first world problems, but it still really sucks when your facing it for the one activity you’ve enjoyed doing more than any other for the past 20 years or so.
You just need a way to brace the pedals against the wall or against the desk, etc. I race at a corner desk that has a section in the middle. I wanted my pedals higher so I built a wood stand and mounted the pedals to that. I did just have them on the floor at one point. Simforge, Fanatec, Moza all have pedals that have some level of adjustment and would work. Even the Heusinkveld pedals would work. I personally prefer pedals that can either be mounted individually (Simforge, Heusinkveld) or moved from side to side.
I'm really surprised more sim racing people don't use VR. Do the popular games not support it? I only play Dirt Rally 2.0. Personally I find the addition of depth perception utterly game changing and I can't imagine wanting to ever play on any kind of monitor setup again. I went from being totally useless on just about any technical stage to nailing hairpins regularly. I am still (for now) using my 20 year old Logitech wheel which is so old the force-feedback is no longer supported by drivers. Aside from being a much better driving experience because you can truly perceive the corners as they approach, VR is going to do way more for your immersion than a fake cockpit. It doesn't matter (for pure immersion at least) that your wheel is a cheap piece of plastic clamped to a desk because all you see is the interior of your car with your co-driver and everything. It really starts to feel like the gloved hands on the wheel are yours. If you combined it with a good force-feedback solution and one of those fancy moving rigs it would be absolutely insanely real feeling, really only lacking proper G-forces. I think money for a rig and monitors is much more wisely invested in a good VR solution, again unless the game you want to play simply doesn't support it. But my experience at least is that once you experience racing in VR you will just stop playing games that don't support it. It's that much better. Another major bonus is that the VR can be used for many other awesome kinds of games as well, not just racing.
IF you can actually race/fly in VR without getting sick. It's a pretty big risk buying a VR setup for a bunch of cash only to find out that it makes you nauseous every time you use it, thus becoming a glorified doorstop.
Yeah that's true I forget how lucky I am not to experience that. I guess it's something you would definitely want to try before you buy.@@karlhungus545
@@karlhungus545that's true but with the price of Quest 2 now and the fact that you could go to a VR arcade to try VR. There are ways to see if you might like it before purchasing anything
@JoshuaKnab IF you have a VR arcade anywhere near you maybe. Every one of them I was going to try ends up going out of business before I get there. The closest one to me now is over 700km away, and they never have the games I'd be interested in (DCS, IL2, racing games).
I went ahead and bought a Logitech pro wheel and pedal set with a FGT elite 160 and also bought the psvr2. So happy I just bought the right stuff from the jump and won’t be looking to upgrade unless new wheels come out ;)
Instead of buying a logitec setup and then realizing direct drive wheel base is the way, i would have saved a chunk of coin. Same with my motion rig decision. I went with a DOFH3 and while its actually a really good system, i crave more. Slippery slope.
Would you please do a video (or comment) on the best compatible equipment (wheel, shifter, handbrake) for PC? I am going to build my own cockpit and PC dedicated for the rig, but I dont want to spend 500+ on a wheel alone either. Mostly looking at Asseta Corsa, but idk what other games are best for realism.
I wish I knew 2 things before I got in sim racing. Which wheel base was right for me. I ended up getting 5 different wheel bases over the course of 6 years. T-150, T-300rs, and DD pro for console, and Accuforce V2, Simucube Pro 2 for PC. It was trial-&-error for me, and when I first got into it a lot of direct-drive weren't available like they are now. Also for pc I ran a teiple monitor setup. Make sure you know what monitors will work with your video card! Lol

Honestly... I think PS5 with the PSVR2 and a G29 wheel and pedal is very immersive and fun. Granted only GT7 has VR its good enough for a casual gamer who wants immersion.
I am checking out Project Cars 2. Frankly, tired of hearing I have to invest in a wheel and other hardware, just to see if I like "sim". Even a couple of hundred dollars is not chump change to me. I found controller settings for PC2, and checking out the genre using PC2 career mode. Using career mode, I can adjust the AI both for my skill level, and using a controller. I likely will only ever race AIs, no multi-player. Am I out of whack in this process?
I'm planning on doing the same. I just became interested in the racing genre, but I'm not about to spend upwards of $100 just to see if I really like it

Most shops only have either the G29 or the T300. No DD which is sad.... might go for the T300 just to give it a try. But asking €400 for something old as trash, aint worth it.

Depends on which Gran Turismo, I think. Early ones like 1-4 I would think are simcade. 5 and 6 try to clean that up. And if Sony ever got smart and released GT7 for PC with universal wheel support and triple-monitor support, they’d probably make a LOT of money from the PC racing sim community.
most people already have either a PC or console. I have both but prefer playing on console... too many cheaters on PC compared to console. Also this guy talk about more than just the wheel and game, the console or pc, the rig the wheel and pedals attach to, a good monitor or tv, hell I’d even go more to say shoes and gloves, beginners with a Logitech wheel and cheap game and cheap Xbox and cheap tv and a cheap second hand play seat will set you all together back like 700
I got the G29 and honestly not very satisfied with it. I want sumn with more input like a direct drive. I'm looking into a Cammus or Fanatec.
@@pain.497 yeah I didn't want to make that mistake, I went straight for the thrustmastee sf1000
@@supercededmanhow do you like the Logitech pro? I was shocked actually to see so many good reviews.
I bought a g920 just because of well how everybody hade one and says it’s a good entry wheel wich it definitely will do the job just the main thing I can recommend is to save a little bit more money get the cls dd ready to race bundle and slowly upgrade it with the loadcell kit and beter steering wheels and what ever you do don’t get the Logitech shifter the shh newt 2 is so much beter and isn’t that much more expinsive .
biggest ive learned is buy once cry once
yup
I already tried dipping my toe in with flight sim (DCS)
G923 is a great $149 wheel and pedal set. NOT for $300+
@michaeltrivette1728 I went from. G29 to moza r5 to simagic alpha mini and I'm happy with the alpha mini finally
@@masonboley876 kinda was asking for playstation since I would want it for gt7. Idk why they've made one for Xbox and not PS4/5

Everything i have ive bought over years so it didnt really seem that expensive however thinking about it now i have spent a lot of money overall best advice really is just dont rush and buy it all at once aslong as you have your steering wheel everything else can be bought in time
@TreborsTactics don't blame you bro if I could of I would of 😂👌
This is a VERY expensive hobby...but listening to folks who actually know what they're doing (yes, even you Oscar 😂) can help quite a bit.

Yep. Got a G923 as my first steering wheel... and I upgraded it to a Fanatec GT DD Pro within 2 months. You get what you pay for.
How’s the fanatec been? I’m a bit nervous about getting it since all of the negative comments about it… mind you this will be my first sim setup
What was wrong with the G923?
Fanatec‘s customer service is „sheet“, but the items are great and user friendly. The entry costs for a fanatec setup is great. Just make sure you make some research before buy and upgrade. My recommendation: choose the prefered wheel you wish before you order!
If you got a G923 and upgrade to a Fanatec, the G923 will feel like a kids toy…
People are still recommending the G29 or the G923 for a starting wheel... completely obsolete tech.
The T300RS GT should be the bare minimum nowadays.
I regret overlooking the price and now I’m broke😅 Good vid oc!
Understandable
I bought an entire set up after a life time of racing with a controller and I just use the set up to cruise on horizon because I am unable to race with a wheel, I'm actually quite alright with that, cruising horizon is like driving my real car which I do all the time
Space is a huge factor for me. I ended up getting a small heavy duty standing desk. A 34 inch ultra wide was the other good move for small space. Some people would end up with the desk set-up because they didnt want to spend the money on a rig. I didnt have a desk until I wanted to sim race. 😂
Thank you for this video this is going to help me a lot!
Glad it was helpful!
Well thats why i bought a house lol
You just need a way to brace the pedals against the wall or against the desk, etc. I race at a corner desk that has a section in the middle. I wanted my pedals higher so I built a wood stand and mounted the pedals to that. I did just have them on the floor at one point. Simforge, Fanatec, Moza all have pedals that have some level of adjustment and would work. Even the Heusinkveld pedals would work. I personally prefer pedals that can either be mounted individually (Simforge, Heusinkveld) or moved from side to side.
What "high end" stuff did you buy 15 years ago where the wheel doesn't have force feedback?
I drive my car on track and ive been seriously considering a sim rig BECAUSE it's so much cheaper. Real-life expenses add up fast.
I sold my 38” curved monitor after experiencing VR. There’s really no comparison in terms of immersion.

Am I out of whack in this process?

im going for csl dd 5nm, mclaren gt3 wheel and mounting it on on my ikea desk, fuck it, im not going to spend much more than 500€, if i was to get "the next thing" i'd easily spend 1000€ which is out of my budget, i can always buy upgrades down the line (not going to for a few yrs, hope so)
expensive????? have you ever gone thru 4 sets of tires on track day? put a 80K build into a wall cause some sand? here i can just hit reset!
What is the rig in 6:52 ?
wassup oc!
