I would doubt it. If Tesla did it then it was a covered repair that you paid for. I believe this free supercharging follows the vehicle. If you have the battery repair or improvement done by a third party organization I'm not even sure your car is going to realize that it was done. So I again suspect it won't matter.

We would like to see folks like you and Sandy (M.) pushing Tesla to create backward compatible battery packs for the original Model S (s) when the new battery cell technology hits the market. Don't let Tesla pull a Steve J and violate all the customer base that took risk as early adopters only to be abandoned by their trusted brand by no longer making backward compatible SW or in Tesla's case, batteries. Just think how cool it would be to have a 2012 Model S with a new technology battery that gave it 300+ mile range........ at a cost of $5,000.00 installed by Tesla. The world would trust Tesla forever knowing they could invest in an expensive car and Tesla would not forget them.

Hi, Pete. What are your thoughts on using "end of life" Model S packs as power walls? When it comes time for me to upgrade to a newer pack for my 2016 P90D, I would like to use the old pack as stationary storage for my house. It seems to me that this sort of 2nd life for the pack would be ideal. Is this at all feasible? What are the cons of such an idea?

  • @josank
    @josank 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

A question for the near future. I have a late 2018 MS P100D. If the battery was to replaced, do you think that using 4680 cells would be possible? No idea how many things that would impact in the 2018 design. But if it can be done, even if it's 50% the cost of a replacement 100 kwh pack, that would be a great option.
Love to hear your thoughts on this. Maybe not enough info right now. But, when the time is right, looking forward to seeing an analysis. And obviously this would apply M3 and Y owners.

Can you upgrade a Tesla Model S 85D to increase the charging speed? Even with a little battery degradation, the range is still acceptable. But the time spent at the supercharger is miserable. My wife's 2022 M3LR charges *so* fast (at V3 chargers). Even though it has longer range, we really don't stop any more often than in our MS. But the quicker charge times make a huge difference on a several-hundred-mile trip. There was some kind of charging upgrade available when we got the MS that was supposed to decrease charging times. Maybe that option can be retrofitted? Thanks!

I wish EV's were more affordable. The Tesla Roadster was released in 2008. That was 14 years ago. The hope was that the cost of EV's would come down as production ramped up. I recall Elan Musk saying the model 3 was going to be in the 30K range. I just looked on craigslist and used model 3's with 40,000 miles are going for high 40's. New Ford Mach E's are going for 65K+. A new Toyota Camry or Chevy Malibu is less than half of that.
Electric Cars are in many ways are mechanically more straightforward than their gas and diesel counterparts. They should be cheaper to make. When are EV's going to be made for the masses? I feel like we need a new Henry Ford to show up. When cars first came out, they were hand-built and extremely expensive. Very few could afford them.
What's the deal? When will the excuse of ramping up battery production go away? How many laptops and cell phones use lithium-Ion batteries. This is the same technology used in EV's.

Bullshit, batteries on all EVs are actually a structural part, they are designed very strongly to perform very well on crash incidents and many other situations.

0:10 All EVs will need a battery replacement after 30-40 years or more.
Batteries aren't going out in 10 years or 20 years.

The explanation that the added weight affects crash behaviour would imply to me that the crash behaviour is different if single passengers or multiple are in the car. If net weight is higher one can load less up to max load - as long as I don't exceed max weight I don't need to do anything on suspension , control arms etc. otherwise I would need to change all this , as soon as more than 1 person sits in the car. I believe they have made up this explanation and need the 100 kwh packs for production

This was such a nicely done video. Excellent explanation and super super informative.
Tesla has now "done away with" pack sizes and now just have LR & LR+.
Will those be able to retrofit into older Tesla's that have say a 75 or 85. Etc? How does the new packs compare and differ?
I have an 85D and drive well pasty battery limit everyday. When my batteries finally die, I am hoping to retro 9n a LR+ battery. A girl can dream, right??

At the newer lower pricing for a full replacement, the $14,000 fee seems better than multiple $5k repairs over time. Of course this depends on how long one plans on keeping the vehicle.

I'll always watch anything about fixing 1st gen Model S. My trade-in value [just so I know] bumped up $2k in last 6 months. There are fewer of these cars, a couple 100K, so their used-prices will stop dropping and maybe rise a little. An 'old' Tesla with a 'bad' battery may be a bargain to someone in the know. Will never become rusty junk.

Great video. Don’t think you covered how the 100 pack is structured and how they get the extra capacity compared to 90. Also, the battery packs have a letter suffix that seems to indicate battery pack version; e.g. I have MX 100 ‘E’ pack. What is difference between E, F, G, H? Some of the range increases seem to be linked to battery pack version?
