WET FUSE!?! | 2013 Tesla Model S Repair

- After removing the battery from the Tesla Model S 85, we take a look at what could have caused the error to shut down the car.

SPOILER! It was water in the High Voltage Fuse Box!!!
We pressure tested the pack, found multiple leaks in the fuse cover. We removed the fuse and found standing water under it. Yipes!
We also removed the "Penthouse" cover and found water and corrosion inside.
We dried-out the battery overnight with multiple fans blowing on it and running a dehumidifier. The next morning, it was dry as a bone.

You need to open the ENTIRE battery, there is moisture everywhere, we have more than 10 years of experience in repairing Tesla batteries
The entire battery? LOL! When you start a job you think is gonna take maybe a couple of days and it turns out to be a couple of weeks.

if you are not already driving the tesla, i would install a AC vacuum pump onto the barb fitting of the battery, hope that it will go negative and evaporate the water.
Any idea how much force will be generated by 15 psi per square inch on that battery housing? Stand back.
@@DCGreenZoneit’s vacuum. Same principle that you use to service an AC unit. Pull vacuum on it, and the water actually ‘boils’; turns into a gas, and gets removed.

@@lancenutter1067 I traded a Ruger 22 mag for one at a pawn shop over 40 years ago like a dumb A@@, when I thought I'd make it big in AC. Well that was a bust but my vacuum pump still functions as advertised.
Sounds to me like that that battery NEEDS better o ring seals and a dry nitrogen pressure system with a pressure sensor . That high pressure/energy system needs positive pressure protection.
The only issue that I saw was the fact that the fuse cover was completely rusted through. Everything other than that looked very good.
I've got a 2014 S, and the drain was extended to drip on the frame just in front of the battery. Though just a week ago I added tubing to get it to both edges of the vehicle and away from the pack. Tesla isn't the only one that ignores this drain, I've seen it on my 07 mazda 3 (drips on the power steering) and on dodge rams (drips on the front suspension arms) - surely it's causing issues on many more vehicles too.
the water on front of the pack is from the A/C condensation drain. Extend and route the hose to the ground instead of the top of the pack,

Maybe this is a reason why the newer Tesla batteries are designed to be more like one solid block of material including closed-cell foam instead of roughly 50 volume percent connected chambers of open air. Thanks a lot for sharing all the details. Interesting to see the condensed moisture and the resulting corrosion.
6:30 Please, it is called the bump cover. Model 3 and later Teslas have a penthouse which contains the PCS. On these packs at the front is the bump cover with the two modules inside.
Bump cover it is then. I’d just always heard other people call it the penthouse.
When you have a leak, when you heat and cool the battery, it works as a pump creating a pressure pump that sucks in new water containing air.
How interesting in breaking down the Tesla battery. I supposed anyone who can open up 10 year old technology and find can’t find flaws that should have been sorted from the outset, will sit back and say “well I told you so” comes to mind. I suppose the only down side is it’s taking such a long time so sort out the problem once you start on the task in hand. Drop off car in the garage to be rectified, & pick it up 2 weeks later! Ouch. Once you get up to speed with this problem the next one will be a piece of cake. Great work. The future of EV repairs in none ‘Main Dealer garages’ is about to start in your hands.
Frontal Module BMBs most likely have corrosion and car will be disabled when they fail.
Removing the hump only is ultra dangerous. 14 module are still in series with deadly voltage after fuse removal.
AC drain not only water dump. Windshield runoff is another. AGM valve on top of hump another source for moist air entry. Then repeated condensation evaporation cycle begins.
Nice video. It takes away some of the insecurity when starting a job of this magnitude.
Are you playing Jenga with lumber under your tires? I know clearing the lift points when you're dropping a battery at home must be challenging. Do you improvise this, or is it a tried and tested technique?

Could you have put the battery pack under vacuum to boil off the remaining moisture?
Interesting concept, but the pack would have to be perfectly sealed up first to even try that. Fans are simple and low tech.
Its good for HVAC because the 14.7 psi differential pressure is nothing for tubing or the compressor, evaporator or condenser. But on a battery case that is 85” x 59”, thats 5000 square inches, and with 14.7 lbs of force on each square inch, thats 73,700 lbs of force. Problem enough to cause damage. Maybe not as bad as the Oceangate Titan imploded, but definitely more than on any HVAC.
Apparently Tesla couldn't provide an improved fuse cover in a timely manner? Seems like this would be a safety issue and they would be all over trying to accommodate servicers. Nice video. Very well done.

What about a possible leak in the battery cooling system?

It would be blue instead of clear and would smell like coolant too.
All the millions of dollar's spent designing a ground up car and still some dounut decides to let a pipe that is designed to have water running through it ,to discharge ontop of a mastic sealed battery cover😢😢

How in the world did Tesla think that was a good place to put that drain? Seems like a manufacturer defect and should have been covered under warranty?
It was covered under warranty. I have a 2013 Model S and the drain hose was extended back in 2014 or 2015 by Tesla service. There was a service bulletin about it and it was fixed for free. But there's always some cars that are missed. And of course by now the warranty has expired on a 2013 car.

It's very very disappointing to see the Tesla decided to use some kind of tricky security bed when they could have just used the regular allen wrench why did they do that it just makes me dislike Tesla
It becuase people who haven't a clue would access it and get electricuted. Those without proper tools shouldn't be accessing it. I'm glad these guys were taking proper precauctions and using the right tools.

I think Ben mentioned the previous owner was told by Tesla that it would probably cost more than what the car was worth, so he sold it really cheaply to get rid of it. And since Ben is fairly technically savvy, he's able to troubleshoot and repair it for a tiny fraction of the cost.
@@Geckogold Yeah I know. It's just sad that this is the direct result of Tesla's screw up and they won't cover it. Even after it's been shown that their recalled part caused it.
@@greghellings If the car was still under warranty they would have covered it but it expired 3 years ago.
My 2016 MX with 95k miles, displays "Replace the high voltage fuse soon."
That's related in that they are both fuse-related. Other than that, totally different issues.
It's probably just a timed or miles based maintenance situation. Like an ICE car telling you to change your oil.
Tesla has used several different types of fuses. The 2016 used one that had a small battery, like a coin cell, that eventually goes bad. The replacement fuse you'll get does not have a battery and has no expiry date. If you're still under the 8 year battery warranty the new fuse is free. Out of warranty it's a few hundred dollars, not terrible.

Yeah I agree. Not to mention the destructive nature of lithium mining. It's just not sustainable. Our power grid can not handle everyone owning a EV. Hydrogen would have been the better route to go down. Look up what happen when these batteries fail. Takes so much effort to put the fires out and then you have to space them out in special junk yards because they are prone to reignite and fires jump to other cars while sitting in the junk yards.... shameful
@@fullyloadedwp - Wow - so much misinformation. Do you work for Putin or the oil industry? There is plenty of Lithium available, and far less destructive than fracking and other horrific oil extraction methods that create mass pollution issues. The power grid can handle EVs without a problem as 99% users charge when the power usage is minimal (at night when the rates are low). Many also charge at home with solar, so zero effect to the grid. Hydrogen cars have a large battery too, and are about half as efficient as EVs, so you need twice the power to generate and distribute hydrogen needed per mile traveled. Since EV fires occur at a rate about 1/20 that of ICE cars, it really is not much of an issue. There are so many ICE fires, the media doesn't even bother to report on them. Even dead EV batteries are quite valuable and recyclers pay top dollar to get them. No need to sit in a junk yard. If you do need to let them sit, you can drain the battery and then they can't catch fire similar to draining a gas tank, which I expect junk yard do as well.
