Wonderful job! I used to work as Dale Hawkins' bass player. He was a hell of a nice guy and quite a character.

You can hear the Lightnin' Hopkins influence here. Great tone! Burton has said he used a small Gretsch amp on this. And this was before he started using the super light strings.

James Burton AKA 'The Telemaster' in 1957. Thanks for pulling apart the original. If nothing else, it highlights the true genius of these rock guitar pioneers. Thanks for your Cliff Gallup, Scotty Moore and James Burton lessons so far.

Mr Burton played all the guitar parts and did all the arrangments for my mom's 2 albums from 68 and 69.
"Anna Black • Meet Anna Black" and "Thinking About My Man" - songs to listen to are Little Annie Weed, Gloomy Sunday (by Billie Holiday) and the Beatles Eleanor Rigby - just to name a few highlights.

Great video Adrian! Thank you so much. The sound is just perfect. During the solo there is a percussive sound as you strum from the echo effect that makes it absolutely perfect. I have a great story for you. I purchased a Fender GTX-100 modeling amp with 200 presets, but it also allows you to download tones created by other folks. Just an hour ago I was fooling around with it and came across a tone named 'Cow Punk' and it is literally this exact sound that you have in this video. It is absolutely perfect for Susie Q.
I can honestly say I had no desire to learn Susie Q until I saw that you posted a video about it, but now it is my favorite tune to play! Especially with the newly found 'Cow Punk' tone.
Excellent video as always, Adrian. I really appreciate all of your videos.

I started doing some Rick Nelson stuff and really got "hooked" on James Burton's playing...many thanks Adrian for showing his style of playing...I noticed that James Burton played with a finger-pick on his middle finger which I thought was unusual but he has been doing this for eons. Just starting to do "hybrid picking"...not easy as all I have been doing is "flat picking" ! ! ! !

I've read an interview with James Burton about 10 years ago where he says his first guitar was a Telecaster, so it most likely was recorded on that. I had a friend from the same town in northeast Louisiana where James is from and he learned the lick from James. He taught me the correct way to play it about 20 years ago, just as you played it. Thanks!

Ah, James Burton! One of my favorite rock'n'roll guitarists. Well done. You've succeeded in getting to the guts of Susie Q. BTW, James Burton came up with the riff, so the story goes, and Dale Hawkins improvised the words.

You have the same gear Mr Burton used, an old telecaster and and "old" fender Deluxe combo. The Tele was his 1st electric guitar and he played it 97% of the time and then Fender gave him a paisley Tele in the late 60's but he was still favoring his 1st that his parents bought for him in the early 50's.I watched a "Hall of fame" viddy interview and thats what he told the interviewer. You nailed it!

Saw the film Le Mans ‘66 yesterday and had to Shazam the song ..... Polk Salad Annie.... by James Burton. Digging around for TH-cam lessons brought me here. Couldn’t find a decent tab anywhere. Would be fantastic if you did a lesson on that track from the film. Totally opened my eyes/ears to James Burton...ashamed to say I had only heard of Scotty Moore as an ‘Elvis’ sideman in my years of fiddling with guitar. Discovering lessons like yours are inspiring me to get my head down and actually learn rather than just fiddle. Thanks.

Great lesson - at the risk of sounding pedantic, it's not actually James' first recording, he played on various tracks on the Shreveport based RAM label before this. Dale Hawkins "wrote" it in that he made sure he got the writing credits but it's absolutely James' lick (after Howlin' Wolf pretty clearly!). Oh and technically he used pick and also metal finger pick on his middle finger. Anyhow, great stuff all round.
