And before that Ricky Nelson's...people tend to forget that. Now you hear James Burton imitated by hundreds of guitar players still [they have good taste lol], they borrow his style....and some of the younger ones have no clue who he is, what a joke...However, the jokes on me now...I never knew James worked with John Denver on tour and for that long.

@@thomastimlin1724 Looking at the old Ricky Nelson videos from the tv show, I had to convince myself of which one was James. Had to do it by elimination, since he sure looked different back in those (younger) days.

"Play it, James". Elvis on the live version of "The Wonder of You" just before James' solo. Generally didn't get to cut loose much playing for him in concert but the way he got paid, he likely didn't mind. Roy Orbison used him some, especially on "Black and White Nights" (I think that is the correct name) and was showcased on several extended tunes.

I met James when he was backing up John Denver, up at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. He had done some studio work with ‘We Five’, a group I was working with across the street at Harvey’s.
He was quite the nice guy. Also playing in Denver’s band were Glen D Hardin, Emory Gordy and Ronnie Tutt. Basically Elvis’s back up group.
    All very nice people…
Years later I did some shows with Jerry Cole, who played guitar with Rick Nelson, Prior to James. He told me that he had recommended James to Rick Nelson, essentially helping him get the gig…

Marion Carter here from Ripete Records in South Carolina. In 1999 my record company was cutting trax for a new project and I was fortunate enough to reunite James and Dale Hawkins on a new recording for the first time since 1957 when they had recorded Susie Q together. The recording of Fools Paradise was well received in the southeast as part of the Carolina Beach Music Scene, and enjoyed a great deal of popularity in Europe. One of the greatest experiences of my career in music. James was quite the gentleman. James, prayers for your full recovery.

Hello James. I have always wanted to send you a message but wasn't sure if you would get it. I just wanted to let you know how much you inspired me when I was 13 years old in 1973. I started playing the guitar when I was eleven years old. I'm now 62 and a half. Lol. It was in April of 1973 when Elvis Ahola from Hawaii came on. I could barely see it on our TV but the sound was perfect. When you played Johnny B. Goode I couldn't believe the way you played it. I had learned it in the Chuck Berry style. I was hooked with the double stops you played and the sounds was so incredible. I went on to play professionally in Nashville and know a lot of the same players as you. That was a long time ago. I now live in Sanford NC. My favorite guitar players are Vince Gill, Brent Mason, Gregg Galbraith, Albert Lee, and Rod Riley. You were my biggest influence though. I always wanted to let you know that. There are thousands of people you never met like me but you had the biggest impact on my guitar licks. I play a Tele EMGs silver active pickups with a B-bender as well. Thanks for the great memories James. Sincerely Rick G. Stone

I got to see James Burton on a tour with the Killer Jerry Lee Lewis in Lynda Buder Park , Valley Park, Missouri ( St.Louis County Parks and Recreation ) blues fest around 1997 ? After a long delay the show was out standing . That small band and all members just complemented each other and their front man Jerry Lee doing his thing, pounding those 88's like it was their last gig . To see two of the most influential musical artist, priceless.

James, I can never repay you for the lifetime of guitar playing that you are responsiple for in my life. When I saw you on Ozzie And Harriet and heard you play, especially your break on Believe What You Say, I knew that I wanted to learn to play that kind of guitar. I put together a band in hight school in Miami and we became the go to band for WQAM. We got to meet and open for people like Roy Orbison, Jan and Dean and others who came through Miami. In college in New Orleans my band there opened for Buffalo Springfield and Rick Derringer and the McCoys among others. When I moved to the DC area I did some recording sessions and met Danny Gatton. He invited me out to his home and agreed to help me learn better right hand hybrid picking. Danny was obviously light years better than me but we connected because we both talked about how when we were kids we would never miss Ricky Nelson every week just to watch you play. We knew you weren't playing live but it didn't matter because we just wanted to see the guy who played the best guitar either of us had ever heard.
Please forgive this rather lengthy comment, but I just wanted you to know how many people you influenced and gave us a gift that might not have happened if it wasn't for you.
Know thatyou are in my thoughts and prayers and thank you for adding so greatlyto the joy in my life.

Ronald, WQAM had a dance club called "Tiger's Den" in South Miami Heights shopping center in the 60s. I was 14 or 15 when Neil Diamond walked into Tiger's Den looking like Elvis and did a three song set (Solitary Man, Richie Valens' La Bamba and one other I don't remember). The house band was there and I wondered if you were the lead guitarist on stage. Love your comment about James. He is truly inspirational and made guitar playing look easy, which it's not, lol.

@@danielwellman9865 Hi Daniel, sorry for the long delay but thanks for checking in. No, that wasn't me at that event. I think we were a few years before that. I became good friends with Charlie Murdoch and he would call and let me know who was coming in that week and where he wanted us. This was pre Beatles by about a year. we played some shows with Steve Alaimo and rhe Red Coats. It was a great time to be in a band. Not many guys were into it yet. I have met James several times over the years but sadly never played with him. Thanks so much for reaching out. I really enjoyed hearing from you. Take Care
      Ron
