@heavymetalmastr I cant improvise very well, neither on guitar nor with my speech, this is true. Lucky for me i dont play a style of music where im required to improvise. Whether my band sucks live or not would really depend on who you ask, but apparently Guitar World thought it would be worth having me do several lessons, so i guess they didnt totally hate us haha. In other news im sorry your life didnt work out for you, and since you are 34, you can thank the law of averages for that one.
love what misha has to say about holdsworth. everybody always focuses on the legato thing, but where allan really sets himself apart is the alien way he goes about composing. the melodies, the chord progressions, the harmonies - nobody else writes shit like that, so beautiful and strange.
Petrucci described it pretty well when he did an interview with Metal Injection a couple days ago. Most of these youths (myself included) started really picking up their playing (mostly guitarists) right around the time that stuff like TH-cam and Guitar Hero gained a lot of momentum, and so there was this mentality of becoming the best and being the most technical, so we turned to progressive music, and musicianship and gear/production knowhow started becoming the new black
Honestly, at this point "djent" describes both the mid-range chug sound and either a genre or a movement. Most of these bands share similar characteristics: largely influenced by Meshuggah, but also often coming from a "core" mentality with breakdowns and screams, emphasis on groove, most start out with bedroom projects using digital amp modeling, likely to upgrade to an Axe-FX, super mid-boosted guitar tone, a "futuristic" sort of aesthetic overall in logos, art, lyrics, and sound...
***** Why do you even see rivalty between the artists? Misha can still be influensed by all these artists. And another thing, how did this apply to the previous comment?
i like how he gives it up for guthrie govan, meshuggah and others. this guy has zero ego compared to alot of guitarists and songwriters. mansoor consistently states in interviews that he is not a theoretical, technical guitarist and that his recording and production techniques are self taught. he has done very well considering this and people should respect him for that alone.
When it first came into existence, death metal was just thrash metal with a different vocal range, but we still call them two different genres today as they evolved separately. The same applies here. Djent may just be prog with a different style of guitar playing (and let's admit it, the "djent" sound isn't the only iconic sound of the djent genre). But there is a definite distinction, and it will become more apparent over time, if it isn't strong enough already.
saw alan holdsworth twice! my dad got me into alan holdsworth a few years ago when i was in middleschool, now i got him into metal haha he loves periphery, volumes, veil of maya, etc.
@Periphery Hey man, I'd heard about your band around Facebook and hadn't bothered to check out any of your stuff but then I saw these videos and I really wanted to check your music out :D and then I was out with my friend and we went into a record store, first album we saw was yours, he was straight on it! Just thought I'd say how much I really love your music, hope to hear more soon :D cheers
@Periphery I didn't notice the "like" thing at all. I actually thought you articulated your thoughts about Holdsworth and Mushuggah much better than I usually do when I'm trying to turn someone on to it. If you do read this by the way, do you ever write drums first then try to shape a colorful / melodic riff over the top of it? I find programming drums on a grid or drumming with my fingers I can get rhythm structures I never think of on guitar.
you're right, that's how the term was originally meant to be used. But since then people have been using it to describe this kind of genre. I would say at this point is certainly is a genre, like it or not
@DamageIncM You're right about tuning not matter, but with this subgenre of metal, the string gauge and tuning play heavily into the tone that is created and is the foundation of "Djent". Therefore, in this specific subgenre, tuning does matter. Also, it would be different if Kirk was attempting to play something really techincal, but it was just power chords played on the third and fifth fret. I was playing stuff like that when I was 13 effortlessly. It was dumb. Its whatever.
I Am Colossus by Meshuggah VS. Have a Blast by Periphery. If you can come up with even a dozen VALID similarities between the two that are not completely obvious, (such as "tone", or "low tuning" or "odd groove") I would be delighted to hear them.
Omg..."Back when Korn was coming out"?? Is that what he said?? Holy shit I'm old...if that's what he said, holy god he likes Korn, and God damn I'm old...
@mitchell797979 No, they are made to look 'worn', If you look closely you can see its just corroded sections of the pickup that looks like plastic. Check them out on they're site, they're awesome. The look really cool in my opinion
I'm pretty sure djent is a genre. Saying it isn't is like saying that slang isn't words. Just because a word isn't in a dictionary doesn't mean it isn't a word, and the same applies to genres. As soon as people begin to use a word to describe a style of music, you have a new genre. I understand that it began as an onomatopoeia, but regardless it has become a genre. I can listen to a song and immediately tell you if it is djent or not. That is the definition of a genre.
To me, Djent is a genre because it's a stylistic crossover between progressive metal and metalcore, frequently based on low tunings, low 0 and 1 bends and progressive technicalities like obscure time signatures and rhythms, syncopated riffs, unorthodox scales and chords. But that's just me. Also, notice that djent is used only in a certain area of metal, where as pinch harmonics and tapping is used all over the place. Not Wah though. That's reserved for Kirk Hammett only.
@fraterlucifer888 he does play 7 strings, half of their stuff is 6, and the other half is 7, hes just nervous as balls, he is quite possibly one of the most creative guitarists/musicians out there right now... don't talk shit about him if you don't know his work.
You may have noticed, but metal doesn't do "bucket" genres like most music. When we say something is death metal nowdays, it's like saying death is the most prominent feature. Metal genres act more like "tags" now, which I'm perfectly okay with. When we argue for "djent" as a genre, it's like arguing for "djent" as a set of prioritized characteristics. The genres almost act like latin or greek roots (see "blackened nintendo-deathdoomcore.")
@DamageIncM James Hetfield plays in standard E. He tried making a metalcore/djent album. It was called St. Anger. So, actually he can't djent with a single string. Kirk couldn't even play one of the most basic riffs of Some Kind Of Monster and got pissed off. It's on TH-cam.
No, djent is just the name now. Bands we refer to as "djent" have common characteristics (tone, rhythmic structure, vocal ranges, etc.) making it a genre. Just because the name originates from onomatopoeia doesn't make it any less valid.
@ironmaidenowns Definitely not what he means. I think it's more in the context of hitting the right note for the right moment to create the perfect feeling you want for your music.
This is true but when someone is telling me about a band and I ask what genre of music they are and they say "their a Djent band" then I know what its probably going to sound like
Djent is a Genre ^^ All those people saying "umm, uuh, well MISHA said Djent isnt a genre" kinda become annoying... Its a genre because people use the word Djent to describe a specific kind of music, which is what you use a genre for...
As the matter of fact, Djent is already a genre - you can't call Tesseract a Math Metal band (there's less metal in their music album after album). It's way easier to call all this music "Djent" then to try to remember that Meshuggah plays Groove/Math metal and some other guys play some-other-progressive-or-math-metal-sub-genre :)
Misha doesn't need to prove anything, he's not a teacher, he's a producer and a guitar player. His success speaks for itself. I've seen Periphery twice and they continue to improve. Take your bullshit tight ass complaints somewhere else.
"That's what djent is btw, DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT"
love what misha has to say about holdsworth. everybody always focuses on the legato thing, but where allan really sets himself apart is the alien way he goes about composing. the melodies, the chord progressions, the harmonies - nobody else writes shit like that, so beautiful and strange.
Kyle S. Late reply but Holdsworth is such an underrated composer. He's niche but that doesn't make him bad.
Is the twist in his guitar strap irritating anyone else? >.>
no man I'm here to see him talk I don't care about the strap, whats wrong with you
well now that you mentioned it...haha didn't even notice. Love the way this guy writes riffs
"Twist" by Korn just ran through my brain
now that you fucking pointed it out xD
It's driving me nuts
Petrucci described it pretty well when he did an interview with Metal Injection a couple days ago. Most of these youths (myself included) started really picking up their playing (mostly guitarists) right around the time that stuff like TH-cam and Guitar Hero gained a lot of momentum, and so there was this mentality of becoming the best and being the most technical, so we turned to progressive music, and musicianship and gear/production knowhow started becoming the new black
I'd love to hear all of "jetpacks was yes" taught. I love that song
Petrucci and Govan...this guy gets it!
Pier-Luc Tardif and Alan Holdsworth. Those three are the essence of guitar music!
Is it me or are those pickups really close together?
***** Why do you even see rivalty between the artists? Misha can still be influensed by all these artists. And another thing, how did this apply to the previous comment?
They're close together because it's a 27 fret guitar
Completely missed that, thank you
*****
No problem, it's kinda hard to tell without fretboard inlays!
it looks like this "like" thing is getting me some extra press and comments! Thanks guys, as much as it is unexpected it is much appreciated!
i like how he gives it up for guthrie govan, meshuggah and others. this guy has zero ego compared to alot of guitarists and songwriters. mansoor consistently states in interviews that he is not a theoretical, technical guitarist and that his recording and production techniques are self taught. he has done very well considering this and people should respect him for that alone.
I was about to say Sikth. You can completely hear the influence in Misha's writing. Genius band.
@xlambxofxruinx no prob dude!! love keepin in touch with yall!
When it first came into existence, death metal was just thrash metal with a different vocal range, but we still call them two different genres today as they evolved separately. The same applies here. Constantly focusing if the guitar strap will sit on it's place or not at his shoulder :D
He shows respect to he's master that's cool :)
saw alan holdsworth twice! my dad got me into alan holdsworth a few years ago when i was in middleschool, now i got him into metal haha he loves periphery, volumes, veil of maya, etc.
lol i love how he mentions guthrie. Guthrie's amazing at guitar!!
SIKTH!!! YESSSS thank u so much for mentioning one of the best bands of all time
@Periphery Hey man, I'd heard about your band around Facebook and hadn't bothered to check out any of your stuff but then I saw these videos and I really wanted to check your music out :D and then I was out with my friend and we went into a record store, first album we saw was yours, he was straight on it! Just thought I'd say how much I really love your music, hope to hear more soon :D cheers
@Periphery Wait who controls this acount all of u guys or just mostly Misha
Very very interesting stuff! Checkin out your band and ideas man! Found you through Keith Merrow.
I find programming drums on a grid or drumming with my fingers I can get rhythm structures I never think of on guitar.
isnt the name of the song "buttersnips"?????????
That guitar is a weapon!!!
@225tommo so that style of pickup has plastic on it?
what tuning is this six string in? is it tuned down to sounds like a 7 or just regular tuned as a six?
Dropped C, but with djenty tone
Drop djent
what band did he say from the UK?
how can you get that effect?
@Yorcen It's actually a Bernie Rico guitar
what was the band he mentioned at 2:46?
SikTh, they're touring this year
Watching that whole video with him not touching that guitar was so beyond painful
What is that guitar?! :0 Its beautiful >
3:48 what's the fourth note?
whats the bristish band that he calls, broken up six? sick? cant find it
Sikth
Sikth
THEY BROKE UP? SIKTH? OH DEAR LORD.
Lucas Jenkins
They actually reunited in 2014
I noticed! Euroblast and Techfest had them on tour.
@ironmaidenowns No. Often playing the most powerful notes means borrowing from other keys. Like adding diminished arpeggios to a minor tonic
@HurricaneTBag i don't know, can you count?
Doesn't the master Tosin Abasi use it as one?
what tuning is he in?
this man. i agree with everything he says. ESPECIALLY about dream theater aha. he is a wizard
@mitchell797979
No, that's the style of the pickup. It's doesn't have plastic on it. They're bareknuckles. It's a bernie rico jr guitar too
What is the brand of that guitar?
what amp are you using in this video?
you're right, that's how the term was originally meant to be used. But since then people have been using it to describe this kind of genre. I would say at this point is certainly is a genre, like it or not

Also Tosin says it's a genre, so there's that.
@Periphery lol I didnt even notice it until now. Keep rockin Misha \m/
I Am Colossus by Meshuggah VS. Have a Blast by Periphery. If you can come up with even a dozen VALID similarities between the two that are not completely obvious, (such as "tone", or "low tuning" or "odd groove") I would be delighted to hear them.
Is that even a seven string? And how many frets are on that guitar?
guitar?
Omg..."Back when Korn was coming out"?? Is that what he said?? Holy shit I'm old...if that's what he said, holy god he likes Korn, and God damn I'm old...
i was born 4 years after the first Korn album came out, and I'm about to turn 18. FEEL OOOOOOOLD
korn was thebshit back in the 90s, the first 2 albums were awesome.
@mitchell797979 No, they are made to look 'worn', If you look closely you can see its just corroded sections of the pickup that looks like plastic. Check them out on they're site, they're awesome. The look really cool in my opinion
I'm so glad he thanked my boys Sikth. Nice one Misha
what guitar is that??
I'm pretty sure djent is a genre. Saying it isn't is like saying that slang isn't words. Just because a word isn't in a dictionary doesn't mean it isn't a word, and the same applies to genres. Not Wah though. That's reserved for Kirk Hammett only.
2 :30 ish - he mentioned MESHUGGAH are years ahead of their time ~ thumbs up if you agree !
@fraterlucifer888 he does play 7 strings, half of their stuff is 6, and the other half is 7, hes just nervous as balls, he is quite possibly one of the most creative guitarists/musicians out there right now... don't talk shit about him if you don't know his work.
This whole time when he was talking about Govan and Holdsworth I was just hoping he would mention Shawn Lane.

@mitchell797979 those are distressed pickups.
>listen to djent on youtube
>everyone suddenly have asperger's and fighting about is djent a genre or not
I could've sworn I heard a wrong note when he was playing the 4-note power chord.
And I thought I was the only one who knew that Djent is a guitar tone, good on you buddy lol.
thank you!
No, djent is just the name now. Bands we refer to as "djent" have common characteristics (tone, rhythmic structure, vocal ranges, etc.) making it a genre. Just because the name originates from onomatopoeia doesn't make it any less valid.
@TiffuZeless bernie rico, it was custom made
@Periphery Fuck em, thank you very much for the lesson Misha. Much appreciated.
(Y)
10/10
Completely valid argument, good facts, perfect syntax.
@uofm97 yeah they're pretty awesome, I'm planning on putting some im my guitar
This IS inspiring.
@ironmaidenowns Definitely not what he means. I think it's more in the context of hitting the right note for the right moment to create the perfect feeling you want for your music.
i...enjoyed this video. LIKE!
Agree. At most djent is a style, but it's basically just progressive metal.
the second part of your comment contradicts the first
if misha says "like" one more time i'll throw myself off something high off the ground
This is true but when someone is telling me about a band and I ask what genre of music they are and they say "their a Djent band" then I know what its probably going to sound like
Djent is a Genre ^^
All those people saying "umm, uuh, well MISHA said Djent isnt a genre" kinda become annoying... Its a genre because people use the word Djent to describe a specific kind of music, which is what you use a genre for...

Mishas amazing!
@uofm97 bareknuckle pickups come in housings like that
@Periphery -- Like... Fucking kickass!!!! Thanks for be wicked meng!!!
@Yameki Like...um, thanks!
When he started playing Jetpacks all I could think was "Sunrise" from TesseracT lol
nvm 3:42
@thejoker1393 Meshuggah is like whiskey, it's acquired taste, i totally understand if you don't like it.
Guthrie GUH-vin not Goh-vin
Misha doesn't need to prove anything, he's not a teacher, he's a producer and a guitar player. His success speaks for itself. I've seen Periphery twice and they continue to improve. Take your bullshit tight ass complaints somewhere else.
he's strap is twist in this video aswell
Yea that made sense
@QuantizeMusic LISTEN TO THIS GUY!
Pause at 1:15
"Oh, you...."
Also that being said, if you check all six of chris broderick's chaos theory videos he totals only 58 dislike.
@druggedontemptation He talks about Meshuggah for ~40-50 seconds before that. People should know if they watch the video..
Hey guys: "Periphery is Djent!" I hope you dont have to cry all night long ^^
Periphery rocks. Intelligent music. Bulb is a great guitar player but in all seriousness stop saying the word "like"....hurts my brain.
@ChucklesMginty well said!
marc okubo needs to teach in guitar world too
