    I love how brutally honest yet self-deprecating Misha is of himself. It brings a sort of humbleness to the stage. It's a good quality. I think everyone should equally bad and equally good opinion of themselves, such as here.

    I love the honesty, " not great at alt picking" so cool that that lead you to this technique !!!

    @panamanian911 Im not saying they are bad, i was just saying its a general rule i have for myself and for my style specifically, honestly there are no rules when it comes to music, so you should do whatever sounds good to you haha!

    That tip about hitting every note as a hammer on when tapping is quite clever. I learned something today :)

    To everyone complaining: yeah, he doesn't explain things like a music teacher would, but he knows what he's doing. Clearly demonstrating what a natural guitarist he is. Link me to YOUR Guitar World column, and maybe i'll listen to what you have to say.

    I didn't say his music is garbage, it is just not as good as Misha's, comparatively. Trust me, I understand Tosin's music.. but good music is not about technique, skill, complexity, odd-meter, speed, or anything like that, (although those are important things) it is about creating something organic, and unexpected, that sounds and feels incredible to listen to, despite it being extremely easy, or difficult to perform. It's not how much you say, it is about how it affects the listener inside.

    @MrSlayergod88 The most important thing about music theory is not for writing, but understand what you're writing so you can repeat the same idea again. It's best for analysis. But theory helps you when you don't "feel" the next note or resolution: you have the rules to rely on and move from there.

    @cycon0 I definitely agree with you but I would go to argue that the more you know or are taught expands what you can do with your feeling, no matter what. The more you understand scales, shapes, picking styles, tapping, theory, dynamic, sound etc. : the better you are equipped to portray your feelings.

  • @mikesinaro
    @mikesinaro 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @caesar09 I can agree in some cases, it really latches on to you though, especially with a full band. Since djent came around no one has come close to perfecting the style as good as Meshuggah, but Periphery is close up there. I can respect Misha for what he does, as bizarre as it might be to a more traditionally trained musician.

  • @molomono
    @molomono 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MrSlayergod88 But knowing which notes and which frets link together to make a melody help you write creatively because giving yourself limitations forces you, (at least it forces me) to be as creative as possible within those guidelines. If i'm still not happy with what i wrote, i split the chords i'm using to get a broader range of scales and notes i can use.
    This goes the other way too, knowing what i'm playing i know where i can go to sound good. IE more time to explore the things that work

    Whether you choose to play "in the box" is up to you... but to be an efficient and successful composer, nothing is more invaluable than theory.

    @MrSlayergod88 Very true, Ive left the guitar for a while to focus on my creativity that's in my opinion the best advice someone can give , to learn to have fun with it , to not be afraid of making mistakes or wanting to make everything perfect... overall working on your individuality and self esteem will lead you to better decision making which will not only help you on guitar but in life, Think on your own otherwise u will destroy your creative imagination, have fun inventing.

    Music theory, is just that. A theory. A thought on how things in music are explained, and or should be done. What if I have my own theory? Music is feeling, and emotion. There is no explaining that or forcing that.
    To people who care about the theory involved, instead of bitching in a comment about a video that was shot already, keep listening and use your brain to provide the theory. Don't knock someone for not knowing it, some people just do what they do well regardless of "teachings".

    @MrSlayergod88 while i agree with you, theory can be a huge help for people that can get trapped in boxes. and if you know how to use modes, scales, etc and ETC you can really make amazing music AND know how you're doing it. Even if you don't know how you're making a sound when you write it, theory helps you figure it out, which in turn will make working with other musicians and producers a hell of a lot easier.
    so i agree with you, but at the same time i don't :P

    @elisprague he is resorting to it. but it is intuitive.. excellent genius musicians such as mozart just heard certain progressions and then they used the theory they were born with to calculate the rest.
    this guy is a musical genius

  • @5amuu
    @5amuu 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @cycon0 Yes, but music theory explains why certain things sound harmonic and why others sound very dissonant, whether you like it or not. Gravity is a "theory" but there's no denying it really...I agree with your general notion that music theory shouldn't be followed mindlessly, but there's no harm done in knowing some.

  • @brian_mccomedy
    @brian_mccomedy 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MrSlayergod88 I agree, but a bit of Theory does help. Learning theory won't make you any less creative unless you play nothing but scales.
    Don't shun theory, but don't dedicate to using it either.

    Actually, people use theory and not even realize it. One of the basic ones most players know of any instrument is that one note can sound exactly like another note. Music Theory isn't required, but it is pretty handy. I even bet Mansoor himself peaks a few pages of Music Theory now and then.

    Misha: so a bunch of octaves that i don't have any idea what they're doing each other but they sound cool

  • @Waltzhybrid92
    @Waltzhybrid92 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Well you have harmonic theory which provides chord progressions of various types so you could just write chords following harmonic theory of the style you want to compose in. Contrapuntal theory, which when combined with harmony, can just give you melodies without much creativity. Theory doesn't only give names to things but describes musical styles so that in order to achieve a sound, if you have the theoretical knowledge you don't need to reinvent the wheel everytime with analysis.

  • @OldManGraves
    @OldManGraves 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @metachozoite Since credentials matter to you I'll point out that I've been learning music theory since I was 5, and have spent many years in education dedicated entirely to music, so that's now 20 years of music education under my belt and a number of qualifications including a degree.
    Realise that music theory is really nothing more than the language to convey musical concepts, and that music can be understood without knowing the language...

  • @Rain593
    @Rain593 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MrSlayergod88 But sometimes knowing theory can help spark the creative juices. I know with my writing, I like to know what is going on. It doesn't hinder my creativity at all. If it wasn't for theory, I don't think any of the music I have written would exist.

I always find that's worth to have a talk with everybody, but I see that you prefer to let things enter in one of your ears and exit on the other one, so I hope this discussion ends here. I hope you the best o luck, and I value that you too work to live your life!

  • @Silverwolf90
    @Silverwolf90 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my opinion everyone should know theory and have chops. And everyone should know how to throw them out the window when needed. Sometimes things make no sense theoretically and they just sound cool. And sometimes things need to be sloppy or else it feels flat and stale.
    They're both totally important tricks to have in your bag. And music will be easier to create if you have both. Regardless of whether you decide to use them or not.

    @peoplesnyukka3 I feel the less you know, the more creative you are. I know very little about the theory ( obviously, you pick some up along the way) but I feel that the more you know, the more in depth you become in dissecting music. I play Prog Rock, a lot of time sig changes and ambient sounds, but i just play what i believe feels right. that's just my way of seeing it, and i'm not saying that you're wrong, i'm just expressing an opinion that works for some people.

    ...and not necessarily something to satisfy your or the listeners needs. Tosin gets his kicks out of playing the way he does and experimenting with that, and the same thing goes some others that in your opinion might right something more powerful, but you simply can't say that his musical approach is a wrong one, because it does not satisfy you. Or are you telling me that Tosin, or any other artist should try to always think about an audience, when that simply isn't his cause.

    It's impossible to "resort to theory" when writing. Just as you can't "resort to using the alphabet" when talking to someone. The alphabet can't tell you what to say, but it can always be used to write it down, and every word you say can be written down regardless of whether you know how to spell or not. That's exactly what theory is. Theory will always have a name for every damn chord, note or scale you can come up with. But that's all it does. It can't force you to do anything.
