Really impressive! You are very talented, and a good teacher. Thanks so much for sharing this. Love the shibori fabric, too.
Thank you for not chopping up a vintage quilt that lost a home. Your coat turned out fantastic! My quilt coat is "New Look 6585"
Thanks so much! I want to make another style soon. I have so many scraps of fabric! New Look 6585 looks like such a cute pattern!! Let me know how it goes.
Thankyou
Gorgeous jacket! Great job!
This is the nicest quilt coat I’ve seen. I really like the slim fit!
Thanks!
Which pattern are you thinking of using?
I like the Vogue pattern.
Fantastic video!!! I have a pattern and fabric ready to make a jacket, but I was looking for how I could sew it with quilting / patchwork. Thank you very much for the best explanation and showing how to do it. I'll start with an easy pattern from Know Me 2058
Best video ive seen. My granddaughter wants a quilt coat and your explanation of what you are doing at the time has helped me visually. How do I find the right pattern?
Absolutely beautiful quilt and well done video. I have made several quilt coats and love trying new quilt items.
Wonderful! Thanks for watching
OMG, I would have soooooooo kept the points in the collar but nonetheless, I love everything about this coat! The color, the Japanese elements with the Sashiko stitching.
I’m also looking around for the pattern so I can make one for myself, thank you for sharing!!!🙏🏽
Gorgeous ❤
Thank you! Cheers!
I love your jacket. I have a lot of fat quarters, which I received within a subscription box. I'm not gifted with ' putting colours together ', however I feel that I should just have a go making my first patched fabric and quilting. Thank you so much
I love it. Well done. 👍🏻yes the rounded shawl collar is much better.
Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this tutorial 😍!!
Best stitching tutorial video I have ever seen!!!
Wow, thank you! Love your henna tattoo work- stunning!
This is a beautiful coat. I really appreciated seeing all the steps in its construction. I have been dyeing fabric in preparation for my own version. I hope mine turns out as well as your beautiful creation.
Awesome!! Good luck- I did a lot of fittings along the way to avoid seam ripping. 😂
Do you know what pattern you will use? I'm always curious
@@OnyxArtStudios I have about half a dozen different patterns, but no final decision. I have some other projects to finish before I can start my coat.
It came out great❗
Phenomenal job❗
Thank so much! I am so happy with it :)
Very nice. Thank you for sharing and providing inspiration! Cheers.
My pleasure!
I have never made a quilted jacket or coat but want to make one. Your video has given me the information I needed to begin. The pattern I want to use is for wool fabric and I'll be using cotton fabric. I figure with the batting and backing it would be the weight of wool. Your coat is fantastic.

thanks! I made this coat a little bigger and then made it smaller in the end. There aren't that many seams so it wasn't hard. What pattern are you using?
Wow!! incredible!
Thanks Renee!!
WAUUUU 🙏🙏🙏 love it 🌟🌟🌟 do you use a special thread for making the quilt? I wanna quilt a jacket to, but I thought I just use a normal thread 🤔😊 Thank you 😊
thanks so much! I used sashiko thread- its linked in the description box.
It is a beautiful coat you have made. I’m just starting to cut my squares in blue and white linen to sew together to make the fabric. I’m going to try and make a Chinese style jacket. I’m also going to quilt like you as I go. Thank you for the tutorial.
Awesome! what pattern are you using?
@@OnyxArtStudios I have a couple of patterns but I might just go with squares and oblongs haven’t made up my mind yet.
Is there a video on how you altered the underarm seam? I struggle with the excess bulk in that area.
If you create a new seam, and then trim it- it will get rid of bulk.

Your quilt coat is beautiful. Thank you so much for this tutorial.
You are so welcome!
I am planning to make a patchwork coat with some beautiful wool pieces that I have gathered. I am so reluctant to cut them up so may use 8 in. squares as they are and place them on point. What do you thinkÉ
That could be very nice (and less work)
I’m in the process of making my coat. It’s blue too. I’m doing similar to what you’ve done by using a pattern but altering. It started as a sweatshirt jacket but I wanted it longer and warmer. We shall see. Phyllis
Thanks for watching! What pattern are you using? I might make another quilt coat soon. I'd love to know!
@@OnyxArtStudios Hi, I'm using a pattern from Indygo Junction, Trench Topper IJ740. It's about 10 years old. I'm also using leftover jello roll strips. I think I'm going to go get muslin tomorrow before I waste all the fabric I've pieced. I used to sew clothes but haven't in a long while. I don't know how to attach a photo here.
Your jacket turned out just beautiful. Very nice job. Any quilted sweat shirt do overs in the future?
Thanks! I've never heard of a quilted sweat shirt do over- I'm intrigued. What is it?
@@OnyxArtStudios I saw on TH-cam how people are taking sweatshirts and added quilting or fabric to them; some are also altering the sweat shirt to become a jacket, made longer, etc.
I’m currently working on a quilted jacket pattern using 3” squares , I’ve only got the fabric sewn haven’t laid the pattern out yet. I’m using a vintage Simplicity pattern 5191, it has a flare at the bottom and is mid thigh length, collar or hood included. 1 &3 any type of fabric but view 2 is for fur fabric. Just wondering if I should use the pattern for the fur fabric as being quilted will make it thicker?
Thanks for a great tutorial!!
Thanks so much. It might be a good idea to do the fur cut since it will be bulkier with the quilting. You can always take it in if it’s too big, right? I always error on the side of too big. Good luck! Will you post it somewhere? I’d love to see it.
Question: Doesn't the hand quilting shrink the fabric a bit? How do you account for that?
Good question! Probably a bit, the pattern was big for me anyway so it was fine. It was a true outwear pattern so I think that it is meant to have some wiggle room and fit over clothes. Also I tried it on every step to see how I liked the fit. I ended up taking it in at the underarm because it was too boxy for me. I would say, it's better to go bigger and then trim than to have something too small. What pattern are you planning to use?
I have been wanting to do this for awhile. I am so excited to find your directions to save reinventing the wheel.
Is there a reason you chose to use poly batting?
thanks so much! I had a bunch of batting in my stash and it happened to be poly.. It is lightweight and dries easily (although I'm not sure if I will wash this coat much) I'm sure you could use cotton batting too.
Do you have a pattern in mind?
I buy machined quilts to do this - I would never chop up an heirloom quilt. Good lord but people do!
Thanks so much for watching! I might make another one out of a machine quilt someday.
