Swamiji says with prayers for divine blessings now begins the exposition of the sacred science of yog. ‘Yog-anushaasanam’ Anu means self and shasaan means discipline. What does discipline mean? Discipline means to voluntarily undertake austerity which is unpleasant initially but is beneficial in the long run. It is not imposed from outside but from inside that is why it is called ‘anushaasan’ self-imposed.
Discipline means to resist temptation, to subdue and train the mind. The mind is like a little child - indisciplined. If we wish to control the mind we have to impose the discipline on our mind. The science of yog consists of the control of the working of the mind.
Mind is the cause of bondage and liberation. So it is imperative for a spiritual aspirant to endeavor to improve the mind.
    About Maharshi Patanjali.
Maharshi Patanjali, one of the six sages who wrote Shad Darshan (the six-philosophical theses,) is a highly regarded Sanskrit scholar with multifaceted dimensions. His Yog Sutras(also known as Yog Darshan) that primarily deals with sadhana or spiritual practices is in the form of sutras. These sutras are “simple yet effective aphorisms that have strung the philosophy,” says Swami Mukundananda ji. The Yog Sutras are not only ancient but also very practical. Modern Psychologists too are discovering its utility in guarding or in regaining mental health.
In this preamble to Patanjali Yog Sutras, Swamiji introduces us to one of the primary requisites for spiritual progress, while answering these questions in a lucid manner - Who is Patanjali? What was the purpose of his birth? How did Yog Sutras come about? What are the elements of Yog Sutras?.

As Swamiji has mentioned in the clip that imposing discipline on ourselves is the main factor in achieving anything in life, be it for material gain or spiritual gain. If we truly understand the value of spiritual path we will definitely train our mind to go in that direction.

Swamiji says to understand the sutras we need to refer to the context. Sometimes the same word has different meanings. Also he says mind is the cause of bondage and liberation. Discipline our mind will help us to grow on the path of Bhakti.

The message from Swamiji can't be clearer than that. Follow two rules 1. Always remember God, and 2. Never forget God. Bondage, and Liberation are both due to mind. Spiritual aspirants need to practice self-discipline, and control their mind.

Learning the Patanjali Yog Sutra requires self-discipline and controlling the mind. The sutras tell us to do this and not to do this. What they are saying is that always remember God, and do not forget God!
