Watched this film the other day, incredible acting by all involved. There is no paedophilia; there is no sexual/romantic relationship between the teacher and the child. Is it inappropriate? Yes, but she is purely about 'nurturing' his talent and trying to make sure that he doesn't fade away and become ignored in the society obsessed with technology and kids growing up too fast. Maggie Gyllenhaal was incredible as a woman descending into madness and none of her actions are at all encouraged or made to feel like they are supported or shown in a good light.

I saw the film. I want to try to give a nuanced assessment of it. In a way, the film is genuine art in the way that it tries to explore an idea and to see where it leads. There is some genuine honesty there, which I appreciated. It's not just an exercise in ideology. It was surprising in that sense. On balance though I would have to say that it is kind of sick. It is sick art.
The Gyllenhaals are beyond talented. Jake's films include some of the most successful and iconic of the 21st Century. And then there's Maggie, whose roles consistently explore unprecedented dynamics of human perspective, motivation, and experience. Jake's a great artist, but I think even he would agree that Maggie is about what makes art GREAT.

A teacher with a severe lack of self fulfillment might. This is common among teachers, they feel like they give and give, but they're always stuck in the same place while everyone else around them is moving on, so they start to feel like they're doing nothing with their lives. This movie seems like it takes that to the extreme.
The ending just crushed me having just watched the movie.. Give this movie a chance if you're on the fence. Its heartwarming, yet unsettling and scary at times. However the ending makes you feel to the child and the warning his teacher stated about his talent not being appreciated. Damn near breaks you're heart..

Would the teacher have eventually looked at him in a sexual manner, a surrogate spouse? What must her family have felt/done when realizing her crime? Why didn't Jimmy's father file charges against her the first time? What did her classroom aide think or do? What did the teacher think when she realized she was caught? Did Jimmy do any debriefing/counseling of any kind? I saw this many days ago, and I'm STILL thinking about it. I wasn't a Maggie Gyllenhall fan, but this movie made me strongly reconsider her. Again, really insidiously sick, very well done.
I doubt they really know the depth of it sometimes and honestly it's more a lesson on how it's bad so it's not really a negative impact. Children are a lot smarter than we think and they are able to distinguish between "playing" (acting) and reality. They know they're playing a part and this isn't real as well as the fact that the stuff happening isn't normal behavior and they should be aware of it.

Kubrick tried to make sure he didn't know what the film was about, and keep him away from the stiff that would have terrified a 5 year old. One of the best movies of this year! People need to understand that art comes from different forms and we can't judge storytelling (at least done right). This movie dares to go to an extreme that literally pits you on a wall making you thinking what's right and what's wrong and the lines that are crossed. Watch the movie before you judge. This story throws light on the failed or futile attempt of ones dream , which is likely to be fulfilled by the child according to the teacher. Her kids seem to showcase less love towards her, which again she wants to attain from the child who is also missing the love of the mother.

She has no control over how the trailer is cut so while the script might be unexpected that doesn't mean the trailer isn't showing too much. I will absolutely watch this film and it will most likely be fantastic! As a teacher, I could hardly make it through the trailer. This is creepy. And so inappropriate. And it just screams blue pages. (We get newsletters each month that shame teachers that do bad enough things to make it onto the blue pages)

I’m just saying that as a teacher, the premise of this is just creepy times 1000. Just like some parents can’t watch horror movies where children get possessed or hurt because it hits too close to home. Caring about kids too much to stomach watching something where they may be put in harms way, is an asset. Not something you should “quit being a teacher over”. It’s like telling a parent who doesn’t want to watch a kidnapping movie, that they shouldn’t be a parent.

My son never went to kinder, my daughter did. My son is an excellent student, my girl hates school, takes a lot to get her motivated.

I'd like to say that you shouldn't hate Israel because of the whole place itself. The majority of the citizens don't want conflict at all, so I don't think it would be fair to blame *everybody.* Blame the government for their wrongdoings, not the people.

Some of you should seriously watch the movie and stop jumping to conclusions. They're not trying to "normalize pedophilia", AT ALL. If anything, it portrays how she got so obsessed with this kid (because of his talent), to the point where she doesn't realize she basically kidnapped him, until she hears him calling the police.

Ok, this went from a teacher realizing a childs' potential more than their parents and simply wants them to shine......to, "Imma kindnap your kid and imprint on him so h-------um, you know, I---I don't wanna finish that sentence...…*shudder*……..
I got the impression his parents did know his capabilities but they wanted him to have a normal life.
I think the metaphors escape most that have watched it by blurting out spoilers which have little relevance to its true message - that one person can actually identify an authentic voice.
That was so weird and creepy. I don't think I want to sit through a film where an adult obsesses over a 5-year-old child to the point of kidnapping, it's just not my preferred style of entertainment. Every kindergarten teacher is going to be triggered.
AJ Walker it is unfortunate that you did not take in the context provided in the movie to learn the real message of this movie.
Watch the movie before you judge. This story throws light on the failed or futile attempt of ones dream , which is likely to be fulfilled by the child according to the teacher. Her kids seem to showcase less love towards her, which again she wants to attain from the child who is also missing the love of the mother.
If the boy tells her she may have a tumor l'll loose it.

She knows with time as he grows older this world will crush him and he will lose his talent. Because that's what we humans like to do to each other "crush each others dreams". sososohaunted agreed! I think you're taking this as an assault to the film which it is absolutely not. She has no control over how the trailer is cut so while the script might be unexpected that doesn't mean the trailer isn't showing too much.
I will absolutely watch this film and it will most likely be fantastic! I am merely saying that while the trailer might not show every twist and turn, I personally feel like it could have shown one twist less than it did.

are you not reading the comments... this movie is definitely not encouraging this behavior. sometimes i think that when people are exposed to something no matter what context, they think everyone is encouraging it and accepting it and trying to normalize it. movies are about crazy things that are not trying to push an agenda, there just trying to show you somthing that will provoke your thought and feeling.
Gyllenhaal always seems to push the bounds of what acting is.
